Ubuntu Networking :: Network Card Working On 10.04 32bit But Not Working On 10.04 64bit!
Jul 25, 2011
I had an Ubuntu Server 32 bit installation and everything was working fine. Now that I installed Ubuntu Server 64bit on a new drive in the same machine, the ethernet card is not working!! This is insane cause when I put the hard disk with the 32bit installation back and booting from it, the ethernet card is working without any problems but in the 64bits installation it is not shown at all using "ifconfig -a"
I have BroadCom BCM4318 802.11B/G Wireless Card. When I first started Ubuntu a week ago it didn't work, but I fixed it after a day or two of googling it. However I made a mistake and uninstalled the Network Manager. I then reinstalled Ubuntu, but it wouldn't load the card again. I activated the driver, and restarted the computer, but then, since It was connected via Ethernet, it wouldn't reconize the Ethernet connection, but the wireless card it did, but wouldn't find a network that is supported.
I have a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 network card on my server at work.Everything works fine for a few weeks, then randomly the network connection on the server will stop working. After it stops working, I will try to reconnect with the network manager, it shows a wired connection available, it shows the "connection in progress"animation, then the "connection disabled" icon.
I uninstalled the network manager and used manual configuration, but do you think the network manager was the issue? I can't have the server disconnecting randomly every few weeks with no way to know what the real problem is. Was there an issue with the network manager with 10.04?
I haven't done a great deal of networking with Linux so bear with me if the solution seems obvious.I've got four machines with two Ethernet cards each; one on-board and one PCI. I'm trying to get it set up so that the PCI card is eth0, then the on-board eth1. This.. isn't going as easily as I would have thought. I expected I could just go to network configuration, switch to the "Hardware" tab... change the on-board card to be device eth1, change the PCI to be device eth0... then go to the "Devices" tab and change the nickname to match the device.
This has decidedly not worked at all. Additionally, on some of the machines that I haven't messed with, the device name for the PCI card isn't ethn, it's something like "Intelnnnnn" (some string of numbers that I don't have in front of me). Something more specific to the card I'm sure, but while I can assign that device a nickname, I can't use it.. I can ping -I Intelnnnn ip.add.re.ss, but I can't ping -I eth3 ip.add.re.ess.
Where am I going wrong here? I've looked at a few tutorials online but they look extremely more complicated (read_device_bus_id? qeth device?) than should be necessary for just what I'm trying to do
I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an older PC and I'm having problems with the network card built into the motherboard. When I connect an ethernet cable into the ethernet port I get a solid amber light, and I can't connect to my router, (which is being directly connected). Nothing is shown in Network Connections, but on another PC with the same version of Ubuntu it shows "Auto eth0", and it works just fine connecting with the router. How do I fix this? I'm an Ubuntu noob so I'm not really sure what to do here.
The network card is an Intel 82547EI Gigabit LAN controller, and Intel's website offered a driver available for my kernel version of Linux. However I was typing everything it told me to do in terminal, (which half the time I have no clue what I'm typing actually means), but I ended up getting some errors towards the end of the install process. I'm not sure if I messed something up or the driver just isn't going to work.
I'm hoping there is an easier fix for this, I've been searching the net all night trying to find someone with a similar problem and I haven't found any. I think I have another ethernet card which I might pop in and see if that works....but I figure I'll most likely run into the same problem because I know for sure the motherboards network card works - has on Windows, I just can't get it working in Ubuntu.
OK so I set up a server yesterday and got ndiswrapper loaded on it with the appropriate driver, I edited the /etc/network/interfaces file to contact my router with it's MAC address, WEP Key, etc... So the problem is I can ping addresses like Google and Ubuntu Forums but I can't use apt-get to install or update packages. When I try sudo apt-get update I get a whole bunch of Code: W: Failed to fetch <address>Temporary Failure resolving <address>My Wireless interface is wlan0 and also I can ping my server from my other computer running Linux and my server can ping that computer too.
so i just downloaded Ubuntu Server 10.04 and i'm very happy with it on my virtual machine... but when i try to install it on my actual server it fails.
When i went to install it, it told me that there was no network hardware detected or something like that. So i just thought i could install a driver for it later.
So other than that all went well. and im very happy but now i dont know how to install my network driver. The card is a LYNKSYS LNE100TX. i downloaded the driver software and burnt it to disk because i was out of floppys. (I like floppys better) and when i went to install the software it allmost worked but it said:
Code: make: gcc command not found
I'm assuming that means i need to install gcc but didn't really know how to go about it having no internet.
I have a dwa-125 dlink wireless card which will not work. This is my first time using OpenSuse 11.2 (Well OpenSuse period). I had the same problem with Ubuntu 9.10 as well. If it will help the solution I used with Ubuntu is here: [ubuntu] Dlink DWA-125 Wireless Card Issue - Page 4 - Ubuntu Forums. I'd rather use OpenSuse than Ubuntu.
(Second Try) I installed CentOS 5.5 from CDs 32 bit, everything works fine. I then re-install, but this time 64 bit, everything else is the same, I use all of the same options. This time though it sees the network card, and allows me to configure it and activate it. It will not connect outside of it's self, IE it can ping it's self, but nothing else. Go back to 32 bit, and zero problems, try 64 again, no network. Each time I do full installs with partition formatting etc. In case it makes hill-o-beans difference, Intel P4, 2.66 Ghz. 2.0 GB RAM MSi Motherboard.
I have a AR928X wireless card and everything I have tried has failed. The default driver ath9k scans and connects to my router but cant connect to any site or ping anything , same with the madwifi driver lspci prints 02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)
Well this my first time working with linux and openSUSE, and I love it. But one problem I can't overcome is my network card is not working. I went to bestbuy and bought the dynex enchanced wireless G card. Model # dx-ebnbc ver. 1011
I installed wine to run the .exe but that did nothing and gave me that the dll is not registered. openSUSE detects that the card is plugged in but the card does not light up or activate in anyway. The only way I can connect to the net is through an Ethernet cable.
I have a hp zd 7000, i really like this laptop, the onboard ethernet will not work at all. i purchased a dynex wired ethernet pcmcia card to get on the internet with. i have had no luck getting on the internet with it it will light up so i am getting power but no transmitting light works at all i have three net work cards listed in the system. one is the wireless. and the other two are the wired eth0 is the onboard and eth2 is the dynex what can i do next to determine the problem i do not use the wireless at all.
I am not very experienced using Linux but I never had big problems with Ubuntu. Now I am busy writing my PhD thesis and therefore I had to install CentOS to use one lousy program that I could not get to work under Ubuntu. However, it seems to be quite fine and it is working well besides one fact: The network card stopped working. In the beginning it was working fine although the speed was only on the level of 100mbit. The switch and the LED on the card indicated gbit connection, though. I tried to install the driver for the 8168 card which reduced the card to 100mbit (indicated by the LED on the switch and the card).
Ethtool indicated it was gbit capable but I couldn't activate it. After reading more and more I figured I have to use the 8169 driver again and live with the 100mbit. Unfortunately, after uninstalling the old driver and reinstalling the driver 8169 the network isn't working at all anymore. The network-manager displays the card as inactive and when I try to turn it on it complains about the wrong mac address, which I am not able to change to the proper one. I am using CentOS 5.5 with the latest updates.
i have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a dell dimension 2400. My Ethernet card wasn't working, so i am using a wireless interface, but it doesn't work either. It worked on a dell dimension 4400, but when it gets to the activate network my system freezes. Should i re-install my system, or should i post this under the hardware category.
I just got done with a fresh install of 11.04. So far I like the new update and face lift. The only thing I do not like is that I can not use my laptops WiFi I have a Compaq Presario V5101US. Below info is from doing lspci command in the terminal...
I've installed 10.04 on a Dell 1200 laptop and cannot get the wireless card working. I've tried getting Ndiswrapper but it doesn't appear to be available on 10.04, and since I don't have an Internet connection, I can't download it. The card is a Broadcom Corp BCM4306 802.11 b/g. How do I get the card connecting to my Linsksys?
I'm a new user of Ubuntu and I think I need some help but let me mention before that I got this up working on a Debian system. My current kernel version is $ uname -r 2.6.32-27-generic.The problem is that my wlan card is not working any more such that my system freezes every time I enable networking with the hardware switch on my laptop. Therefore I bought a USB - WLAN stick and try to get this working.
Network Manager has the option "enable wireless" greyed out if I disable the hardware switch. If I enable the hardware switch and remove the module of my wlan CARD before (modprobe -r iwl3945) it says "wireless disconnected" for all networks.

I have been trying to get my Trendnet TEW-649UB wireless card to work on Karmic. I have ndiswrapper "installed", but it doesn't seem to be working. I have reinstalled ndiswrapper-utils 1.9 and ndiswrapper-common from synaptic, but not ndisgtk (the GUI for ndiswrapper). When I try to see if any drivers are installed using terminal (ndiswrapper -i) the terminal freezes on me.
Previously I tried using the help doc for installing Trendnet wireless drivers, but I was met with no success. After my first try using the help doc it seemed that ndiswrapper was working correctly and the driver was installed, but when I tried to connect to my network my wireless was listed as "device not managed". If this helps at all the current state of my /etc/network/interfaces is: auto lo iface lo inet loopback
auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet dhcp When I run iwconfig I get: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. pan0 no wireless extensions.
but when I try to install the driver using ndiswrapper -i I get the message: driver net8192su is already installed Right now my computer is not even reading that the wireless card is avaliable. When I left click on the network icon I can only see that I am on a wired network {ifupdown (wlan0)}. My computer is dual booted with Vista and the card works there, but for some reason I am having trouble with Ubuntu.
I have to connect to my university's network. I was using ethernet through our router, but now I cannot do that. I recently installed the TRENDnet TEW-643PI and it works perfectly on the Windows 7 partition. Is there anyway to get the card working on Ubuntu without being connected to the internet?
I've just installed Ubuntu (Koala) on an old (but worthy) Toshiba laptop. It's got a Sitecom WL-140 wireless card. (BTW I'm new to Ubuntu, but an old hand at Solaris). Can't get the card to work, although I think It's nearly there. nm-tool shows driver is p54pci. The activity light shows an orange light occasionally. State is disconnected. I'm not really sure whether I should be using the supplied driver (p54pci) or the Windows driver for this card and ndiswrapper. I've installed the Windows driver with ndiswrapper thinking this may fix it but no. ndiswrapper -l says wlancig: driver installed and device (1260:3886) present.
I have a D-Link Air DWL-520 wireless card on my desktop computer. It runs well with Windows, but doesn't seem to work with Ubuntu. I am using Lucid Beta 2. I have tried googling, but have not come across any clear solutions on how to make it work.
Is anyone having problems since they updated? My card was working fine before I updated. Now it detects all the networks, including mine. However, when it tries to connect it sits there for ~2 minutes, then says it's disconnected. I've checked my security settings and they are fine.
After upgrading to the latest Ubuntu, my wireless card stopped working. I keep on pressing the button but the little orange light wont come on...I have an aspire 5517 with "Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)" I have tried drpjkurian's tutorial for madwifi with no success . (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1309072
I have just installed a generic PCI ethernet card into a fairly low powered system (Celeron 766MHZ, 512mb Ram, 40 Gb HDD, Generic sound and video). The card came with no drivers. I have since installed Ubuntu 9.10, and up to a point everything is fine and looks great. However when I connect an ethernet cable up to the PCI card (in the hope of connecting with the Internet), nothing happens. I am thinking that I need Ubuntu drivers for the PCI card ? or does Ubuntu 9.10 come with drivers and I need to go into the 'engine room' to sort it all out ?
I have a Compaq AMD64 that has ubuntu 9.04 on one HD that works great. I've installed 10.04 on a separate HD and had problems installing it. I have 10.04 running now but I can't get my wireless card to work. During installation I skipped setting up the wireless network. Now when I boot into the 10.04 partition I cannot get the nm-applet to work. I can't get it onto the task bar and I don't see it anywhere else.
I checked to see what drivers are installed, and since I have no connection with that OS I can't update or DL drivers for it. I'm pretty sure that it is because I skipped setting it up during installation. What do I need to do to get the wireless working now? I checked other threads and none seem to pertain to my situation. Since I have to log into the 9.04 partition, I can't copy/paste outputs very easily.
