Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager No Longer Seeing Devices After Reboot
Dec 5, 2010
I just loaded 10.10 on an Acer Aspire One D255. When I installed Ubuntu, network manager loaded and I was able to use both the wired and wireless cards. After I used update manager, the kernel was upgraded, and I also added some wireless applications (RutilT WLAN Manager, SWScanner, and WiFi Radar). Upon reboot, the network manager doesn't work, and it cannot find any of the devices.

I can't see any of my devices showing up in network manager to configure even though they're using dhcp and working. How do I get them in so I can configure a proxy?

I'm looking for some help on how to troubleshoot the network on Ubuntu 10.04 64 Desktop. It's on a Acer Aspire 721. There's a wireless card but the widget in the top right says there is no network device.

Just built a box and once 10.04.2 64 bit was all installed and loaded up I realized instead of showing my Ethernet as connected it had the ol x. So when I clicked on it I got "No network devices available." The mainboard is an Asrock 890GX Pro3, link light completely out.

I've got a co-worker who is trying to connect multiple devices to his wireless router - Xbox, Wii, TV, Dishnetwork box, etc. Not all of the devices are wireless however. He's had several thoughts on how to get this done and I know very little about this kind of thing so I thought I'd ask some of you.
His first thought was to buy a multi port bridge, but he doesn't like any of the ones he's seen so far.The other thought was to connect all of the devices to a switch and then use a single bridge, but he isn't sure if this would work.

I'm doing a few tests with fedora 15. I'm surprised because they changed the naming way on network devices. eth0 is now called em1.At every fedora I have found the configuration files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts, but today I can't find them.

I've got three network devices on a laptop:
1. Built-in ethernet LAN
2. Built-in ethernet WLAN
3. PCMCIA ethernet LAN
I installed Ubuntu Server on this computer without the last one inserted.I inserted the last one today, and it lights up when i put in the cable. To be sure if Ubuntu has found it, I tested with the install CD and could see that it found all three at the first part of the installation where I have to chose a primary device.I can't get my WLAN card working, neither do I get my PCMCIA LAN card working. The third card, this PCMCIA card, has worked on Ubuntu Desktop using another laptop. And as said, the setup finds all three.

Does anyone know of an application that continually scans for devices on a network and notifies you if a device connects/disconnects to/from the network? I just want a way of knowing when a computer is connected and when it's not.

I boot linux off a USB stick on many different computers with different hardware. How can I determine in a script which devices eth0, eth1, wlan0 exist and which hardware devices they apply too? Sometimes a wireless card is wlan0, other times it is eth1 or even eth3! The proc/net/dev file does not inidicate which hardware is installed.

I have not tried this, and I am only wondering about the result.Let's say that I have a PC/Laptop with two network devices: an ethernet and a wireless. Can I connect both of the to the same network (if this network allows both connection) to increase the transfer rate between the PC/Laptop and the server???

This may be more suited for the networking forums, but I figured Community Cafe would be well rounded enough for someone to tell me if this is even possible (with minimal configuration that is). There are a few places I travel where I only have a wired connection to the Internet (no wifi), but when this happens is there a simple way to create an adhoc network so wireless devices can route through my computer and to the network? Reason I'm asking is I'm thinking of getting an iPad or iPod Touch which have wireless connections, but in the cases where my laptop is using a wired ethernet connection and the wireless card isn't used, I'd like to create an adhoc wireless network that'll let such wireless devices work.

I recently fixed an annoying problem and I thought it would be nice to share my solution here. The problem was that after a cycle of suspend/resume, Network Manager would only auto-connect to the same network as it was previously connected to. So, for example, if I suspended my laptop at home, and then I went to school and resumed it, it would try to connect to the home network, and then just give up. It would not connect to the school network unless I explicitly told it to.irst, I'll describe the fix. If you're having this problem, you can this. Copy the following:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
case "$1" in
[code]....

I am a Windows refugee who discovered Ubuntu as a way to save my files from my virus-ravaged computer. Had no installation discs for Windows, so when I had to wipe my hard drive and start over, I decided to give Ubuntu a try. I've had mixed success, but that's another post...
Right now, the problem is that I installed 10.10 two weeks ago and was able to connect to the Internet with no problems - until yesterday. Suddenly, our wireless network (the only one in the vicinity) does not come up as available in Network Manager. In fact, the entire wireless option disappeared. I know there are many posts and threads on here about this, but weeding through them trying to find an answer is more frustrating than actually dealing with the problem. I know the router works because I can post on this forum from the Macbook. I really like Ubuntu and would like to keep using it, but not being able to connect to the Internet now on top of the other issues I've had is making me doubt I want to continue down this Linux road.
P.S. When I attempted an analysis through System Testing, it said something about there being no proprietary drivers?

I have used ubuntu in the past but had a lot of hardware issues with it and unfortunately moved back to windows (( BUT i have tried Ubuntu again and all seems to work great except wifi My wifi connection is sort of working because when i run SUDO IWLIST SCAN it does pull up all available networks. But in the network manager icon on the panel i left click but i see no networks and can't connect to anything. I WOULD LOVE TO keep Ubuntu and use it permanently but I must get wifi working or else this won't be possible.

It still works fine if I boot into "good old" Windows. I must say I am SOOO disapointed with the Network Manager in Ubuntu which was great until 10.4 and has been crap ever since. I have had so many problems with my Vodafone USB and had to find an alternative method of getting it to work. Now the last straw is that my wireless LAN card is not getting recognised on startup so I have not connectivity when at home. (USb via Vodafone is no good in my area). I am typing this via an old Windows PC because my Ubuntu just does not work anymore. I have not installed anything new so what has happened - or how can I get it to work again.
I was completely sold on Ubuntu but am now considering reverting to Windows. It would be worth paying for an operating system that actually works, even if I have all the other hassles as well. A year ago Ubuntu was great - it all worked ! Not any more how can all that good work have gone down the pan - I can't understand how anyone could let all these nertwork problems occur - it isn't just me - read the threads - it's widespread.

I recently put Linux on a Thinkpad T40 I got. The wireless card works out of the box--I can see nearby networks. However, I can't connect to mine. network-manager would try (spin spin spin), fail, ask for the password, and then go back to the beginning and repeat indefinitely. This happened to me on a different computer, and on that one all I had to do was use wicd instead of network-manager. So I installed wicd, but it's not working either--it hangs at "Obtaining IP address".
I've found many, many threads with people who had the same problem, but none of their fixed worked for me.
I also tried to get wifi going manually, using this guide, but that didn't work.

I am using Network Manager to connect to a VPN server so that I can access some of the computers on the local network there. When I'm connected, I have two problems: All my internet traffic goes through the VPN. My computer is no longer visible on my local network. I waste a lot of time connecting and disconnecting the VPN. Is there any way I can set up a VPN so that I am still on my local network and only requests to 172.x.x.x go through the VPN. I suspect it can be done with iptables, but all the info about iptables goes WAY over my head.

My wifi connection drops sometimes and, for some reason, Network Manager attempts to connect to my neighbor's network, which requires a password (which I don't know). Is there any way to blacklist a wireless network so that the Network Manager will never attempt to connect to it?

I'm having a problem with video capture devices. I have a cheap analog capture card (encore) and a webcam. Not sure exactly why, they are mapped as /dev/video0 and /dev/video1 in diferent orders randomly as far as i can see.So, sometimes i reboot having webcam as /dev/video0 and capture card as /dev/video1. But then i reboot later, or next day, and they swap. Then, i have to change config for other programs over and over again. For example, i use tvtime to watch live tv, and i have to edit the config xml files almost everyday... Can i force devices to be always mapped the same way?Can i at least add some kind of alias to use instead of device numbers?
