you can find a cutout of an output generated by "iwlist s" command for a cell. Does anybody know what Quality, Signal level and Noise level mean? What is the definition of them? I searched for it and could not find good information on it. What do these Extra:*** fields for? What does it show in the example above? How were those values computed?

When I turn my sound up all the way I hear a white noise or "staticy" sound which I do not know how to get rid of. My sound when playing music is not the best sound quality either. Please help me out somebody please. Here is my sound card info:

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Dimension 4600 and the sound quality isn't very good. I loaded VirtualBox and installed WinXP on it. If I play the same ..... video on Ubuntu and then on the Vbox WinXP machine the difference is startling. It sounds beautiful on the WinXP machine. Is there any way to improve the sound quality on Ubuntu? When I play the video (any video) on Ubuntu there is a lot of static noise to contend with.

I have a netbook with a onboard WIFI card(Broadcom 5727(rev 01)) and a Realtek RTL8191S USB WIFI donge. Both work.
My problem is; I can't get these to scan for AP's running on channel 12 and 13.
Is there a way to fix this?

generally whenever there is a wifi connection available fedora will detect and i can establish the connection but today i am not able to see any such wireless network available. I am in a wifi accessible area and i need to know how this can be rectified. i tried iwlist scan in the terminal but that doesnt seem to work

One thing I noticed after running some applications on it is that it is not possible anymore to figure out on what frequency a wireless interface is using. If I set a wireless interface to monitor mode and perform the iwconfig or iwlist command, in the past, I could see the frequency used on the interface, but now, this information is not present anymore. My wireless interfaces are in monitor mode.
Has the frequency information been removed from iwconfig or iwlist commands? If it has, is there another way to report this information?

The adapter I purchased (Zonet ZEW2508 ) uses the Ralink 2070 chipset - a fact that originally excited me because Ralink seems to be fairly loving to the Linux community. However, despite my best efforts I can't get the thing to work. Initially I tried following directions to set up the driver you can download from the Ralink website. The directions I found were written February first, and Ralink updated the driver February eighth - so as far as I can tell the directions no longer work. After screwing around trying to figure that out for a while I decided to give ndiswrapper a go.
Initially this seemed promising. I just harvested the drivers from the CD and followed one of the many ndiswrapper directions available - most helpful seemed initially to be the Ndiswrapper Troubleshooting Guide found in this forum, however the solutions offered there didn't work either. When I throw an ndiswrapper -l into the terminal it looks promising at first, it tells me the driver is installed and the device is present, but it just doesn't work. When I try iwconfig, or iwlist scan it tells me "no wireless extensions," and "interface doesn't support scanning" respectively. The only devices even listed are lo, eth0, and pan0. There's no wlan0 or anything of the sort.

I've been having a lot of trouble with getting wireless networking devices to work. I guess I have a lot of company, since mfrs don't seem to be very interested in supporting Linux.It seems that one common symptom is that, when I try to "Ping" using the Terminal, I get "network is unreachable".Does this mean anything specific, or is it a general output whenever the network is not carrying on two way communications? Does it mean that the wireless interface is down? Does it mean that the wireless hardware is not transmitting? Not receiving?

I have used ubuntu in the past but had a lot of hardware issues with it and unfortunately moved back to windows (( BUT i have tried Ubuntu again and all seems to work great except wifi My wifi connection is sort of working because when i run SUDO IWLIST SCAN it does pull up all available networks. But in the network manager icon on the panel i left click but i see no networks and can't connect to anything. I WOULD LOVE TO keep Ubuntu and use it permanently but I must get wifi working or else this won't be possible.

However, I notice that at times (if not all the time) their internet is ridiculously slow. Yes, it's a 1 Mbps download connection, but I still think it's a little slow and at times I can't even get it to load a website. I'm thinking if I adjusted the MTU within Ubuntu, it might improve, if even only slightly. I believe the router is set to 1490 or 1500, I haven't really looked yet.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been able to kludge a kill script which finds the correct pid for the kdeserver (or gnome server) after my system comes up in run level 5 so I can drop back to run level 3 mode. Lots of experimentation showed me that using telinit 3 and telinit 5 would occasionally leave the video memory in a mess and I would have the black screen of death.
I set the security parameter setting to autologin for me since I am the only user of my machine, but I still have to kludge the default setting under sysconfig (the DEFAULT_WM) under Window Manager to pick a certain window manager, so it takes time to manually switch the desktop.
Right now I can leave the gui and drop back to cli, but painful experimenting showed me that killing the X server is a no no. Right now I kill the kde server, which sends the SIGTERM to the X windows manager, which then figures out that it has to shut down.
Questions: Is there a better way of doing this? Apparently openSUSE figures that we have multiple users logging into the gui desktop, so the gui is always kept running and a login window with the desktop manager option forces the user to login in. With autologin, this never happens, but no choice of desktop is possible on the fly.
Can some type of script be set up to painlessly enable this to happen? And what is the best way of bringing either the Gnome or KDE desktop manager down gracefully? I do get lots of error messages as the system attempts to recover and X shuts down. It appears that apparently the single user with autologin is left out in the cold.

The problem is it has instructions to install the software as an administrator since i'm not an admin of the department network i can not able to install. Is there any method to install this software as an user level rather than admin level.

My computer also has an internal wireless card, but the signal here is very poor. I was running windows vista 32 bit (NOW UBUNTU 9.10) on my custom built pc with a TP-LINK TL-WN353GD wireless pci card, before on vista my wifi signal strength would be in the low 70% range with a speed of 54 Mbps from a access point roughly 250 yards away, now with ubuntu 9.10 signal strength in the 15-20% range with a speed of 1 Mbps. My question is, what is the best way to overcome this wifi signal strength and speed problem, it is a noticable performance disadvatange easily seen on a website like ..... where as before videos would play 95% of the time without having to stop and catch up, would a different wireless pci card be a better choice than what I have, or is the problem in the software as in a driver incompatability or lack of correct driver, not sure how to remedy the problem.

I installed WICD because I was looking around the internet and the Ubuntu forums said that it was the best fix for the Network Manager not working. I added the source and installed the package like the Ubuntu site said. I go to Applications => Internet => Wicd Network Manager. It says no wireless networks found. I know that the router is working because my sister is right here next to me playing Maplestory on her laptop! When I do the lshw -C network function in the terminal it is only bringing up two things: the network controller and the ethernet controller. I used Yahoo Answers as my first goto and the answers there said that Linux doesn't have the drivers for the router. I have a Netgear Wireless-N 300 Router WNR2000 and a Dell Inspiron 1750, if that helps. Can someone give me a link to the drivers or tell me in detail what to do?
