View 7 RepliesI have a Brother MFC-7440N which has Linux drivers, but I can't get useful scans yet. It prints fine, but the only scanning software I've found so far, XSane and a utility just called "Scanner Utility" are both useless.
XSane is no good because it crashes every time I try to scan something.
Scanner Utility has a few problems. Unless I set the paper size to "Legal," it keeps cutting off the bottom few inches of my (US letter-size) document. It's the same, regardless of whether I scan from the auto document feeder, or with the original on the glass. Also the orientation is screwed up. When I select "Portrait," the scan comes out rotated 90 degrees, exactly the opposite of what I'd expect.
I also don't like that there's no way to go back and change the scan settings. If I want to scan another document or at a different resolution, I have to quit Scan Utility and run it again.
Neither utility will scan to a .pdf. XSane gives the option, but like I said, it crashes every time I try to scan something.
Is there a scanning program available for Ubuntu that actually works, & will scan to a .pdf? Brother doesn't supply any scanning software for Linux, just drivers, so I have to find some 3rd-party utility.
In a previous version of Ubuntu, when you installed Thunar you automatically got the Bulk Renamer as well.With the latest version not only does it not download automatically, but I can't find it in Synaptic at all. Has it not been updated to work with Ubuntu 10.04 or am I just being blind, and not seeing something obvious?

I found a way to perform this task using ffmpeg to convert the mp3 file to a wav file, and converting the wav into a swf file using swftools (wav2swf), although this is not a good option because the output swf file size is very big - for a 12mb input 320kbps stereo mp3 file, the swf file is 25mb. Also downloaded a free direct mp3 to swf conversion software, which had an output swf file - with the same 12mb mp3 file - of ~400kb.
The requirements I have from the tool are:
1. Can be ran from the shell.
2. Direct conversion, or an indirect one that will produce a small output swf file.
3. Suport for multiple file conversion is a plus.
I accidentally deleted my drive, which was an ext4 filesystem. I had lot of .php files in that drive.I created again an ext4 filesystem from that deleted partition. When i used photorec ,it recovered lot of files without the filenames. better recovery tool which recovers both file and the filename?

First time failed with no sound, second time worked fine - NO CHANGES that I know of, BUT OK - it works nicely.So if I click on a file in the Linux (fedora 14) file browser, I see using "Mplayer Media Player" as a second option, It does nothing, nor does it do anything from the Application tool menu. Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.

I have a gaming server set up and running client software 24/7. This prevents me from editing the configuration files while the client is running. The server is connected to a switch which also connects another computer to the internet.What would be the proper software to use if I want to edit files on the server without interrupting the client?I have looked at Samba, SSH, and Screen, but I'm not entirely sure which one would be the best tool for the job.
