General :: Video - Tool Like Media File Segmenter ?
Feb 5, 2010
I'm looking for a tool for Linux which can segment a video file into multiple small .ts files.I know one for Mac OS X called Media File Segmenter which is a simple command line tool - I'm looking for an equivalent tool for Linux.

I'm looking for a Linux tool that allows me to transcode videos to a video codec that is highly compatible to the Windows platform. We produce large scientific videos from measurements and would like to show those videos during presentations and submit the videos to journals. We want to be as compatible as possible (we can not influence for example the codes installed on the presentation system or on the journal reviewers system).
Virtualdub suggests one of these codecs:
* Radius Cinepak
* Intel Indeo R3.2
* Microsoft Video 1
We tried ffmpeg, mencoder and Virtualdub under wine, none of those tools could produce videos encoded with the aforementioned codecs.

setup a media server in Linux which streams video over the internet? Is it easy to do this? I want a server that will actually encode video in real time to allow it to stream over sometimes slow or unreliable networks. Basically, I want a server that works on the internet. I have a directory with a bunch of video files, and want to make this accessible to myself remotely. For other situations, I found great and useful software (such as the PS3 media server). I'd like to find something equally as useful for streaming video over the internet.

I have an ISO CD image file and want to extract it's contents to a folder. I know there are ways to mount the image and stuff, but it's complicated. I'm looking for a GUI tool to open up the contets and extract needed files. On windows I would use WinRar to do this. K3B only allows me to burn the stuff, Arch does not work with ISO files :(Is there a similar tool on Linux, preferably from KDE world?

Two tries at building mplayer. First time failed with no sound, second time worked fine - NO CHANGES that I know of, BUT OK - it works nicely.So if I click on a file in the Linux (fedora 14) file browser, I see using "Mplayer Media Player" as a second option, It does nothing, nor does it do anything from the Application tool menu. I do not know where the "I am doing nothing (and here is why)" error message is logged.
I can manually run mplayer or xmplayer on the .wmv file and it works.How do I edit the menus (control files?) and have them use the newly installed and working mplayer (or xmplayer??).Next, it would be nice to make mplayer the default tool to play videos in Firefox (the default for both is another tool (Movie player) which needs a plugin that I cannot find to work).And finally, if I can get one or both of these working - it would be nice to set the default to the new player instead of "Movie player".

I am looking for a way to be mailed a new file when it is created in a certain directory.I have found tools that will notify me when a file is created, such as iWatch with iNotify, but is there a way to actually be sent the new file when it is created.It is only a short text log file, but I would like to read it in my inbox rather than have to login and open the file each time an event is logged.

I was wondering, what if you had a flash drive formatted with an FS that has UNIX permissions. Then what if you copied some of your files onto it. And then put it into another computer that has a user account by the same name. WIll the user be able to access the files?What if you named your own user differently on the other computer, will you be able to get your files?

I've hit a wall here; I'm attempting to find some way by which to view files and cd into directories on a device mounted read-only. So I need the permissions to read, write, execute (and the same with directories), but chmodding is out of the question because I don't want to alter the drive one iota.
I guess what I could do--what I was thinking of initially--was to dupe the whole drive and then mess with permissions. This wouldn't affect the original (actually I'm working on a duplicate of the original, but I'm treating it as if it were the original) but I was hoping for something that would maintain data integrity. This is a forensic application and not altering the data is very important.

I am using ubuntu 8.04. I played an mp3 in totem & meanwhile moved that file to another location. Still I can move slider in totem to rewind or forward the song. Only after the song has been played completely I get message 'location not found'. Does that mean totem copies song into RAM so that it does not have to trouble hard disk for access during entire duration ?

I'm looking for an easy to use video editing tool for cleaning up and enhancing the simple movies that can be made with digital compact stills cameras. My camera (a Panasonic Lumix) records these as Apple Quicktime MOV format and uses a very basic internal microphone to enable it to include a very poor soundtrack. My current desktop is Ubuntu 10.04 running on an old Athlon 64 single core with 2GB RAM with "enough" spare disk capacity for these very short home movie clips. I can play them back with the standard media player at present. I'm not a professional multimedia artist and I'm looking for a very simple, easy to use tool that will enable me to clean up, convert, etc. Ideally, I'd want to send these either via e-mail or on CD to family and friends.

I'm looking for a tool that can directly convert mp3 file to a swf file. Tried ffmprg - 'ffmpeg -i master.mp3 -ar 22050 -ab 32 -f swf -y -vn new.swf', output is as follows:
Output #0, swf, to 'new.swf':
Stream #0.0: Audio: 0x0000, 22050 Hz, stereo, 0 kb/s
Stream mapping:
Stream #0.0 -> #0.0
Unsupported codec for output stream #0.0
I found a way to perform this task using ffmpeg to convert the mp3 file to a wav file, and converting the wav into a swf file using swftools (wav2swf), although this is not a good option because the output swf file size is very big - for a 12mb input 320kbps stereo mp3 file, the swf file is 25mb. Also downloaded a free direct mp3 to swf conversion software, which had an output swf file - with the same 12mb mp3 file - of ~400kb.
The requirements I have from the tool are:
1. Can be ran from the shell.
2. Direct conversion, or an indirect one that will produce a small output swf file.
3. Suport for multiple file conversion is a plus.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 dual booted with XP on a laptop. Whenever I try to play any video files, even just bog standard avi files, the media player just shuts down and disappears. This has happened with the movie player that comes with the OS as well as VLC. I also tried out Dragon Player and the files seem to load up and when played the timeline slider just skips across to the end in about 5 seconds but no picture is shown during this time. The codecs all appear to be installed fine even though I know that VLC doesn't require them. My video card is ATI and I know that it works fine as these files play alright when booted up into XP, Hi-Def included.

I was setting up my Totem Movie Player on Ubuntu 9.10 and at first it wouldn't play dvds at all. So, I went online and entered these two commands into the terminal to play restricted dvds.
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
DVDs will now play on Totem, but now I don't have any video. I can hear sound and if click around the screen I can get it to play but I still don't have any video. I also tried both dvd drives on my computer and tried different DVDs. Still same thing.

I'm trying to play videos from my flip ultrahd recorder and it's plays the audio fine but the video skips. It shows the video for a second then stops for 2 or 3 seconds and shows the video for 1 second and so on and so forth. Like the video is lagging or something. Anyone familiar with this problem. I also have dragonplayer and pitivi that I'll try also.
