Networking :: Using Mtr As A Network Diagnostic Tool ?
Jun 29, 2011
i am using mtr as a network diagnostic tool and i have a basic doubt that whether the intermediate switches or router ping the next switch/router on behalf of the original machine and report it back the route and corresponding response and packet loss to it or it itself identifies the route and pings the individual machines and get the response time and packet loss.

As promised the finished (pretty much finished) wireless script can be downloaded here the wireless_script is a diagnostic tool for wireless issues. It will return all relevant information to help diagnose a wireless connectivity problem, return connectivity stats and attempt to fix common problems such as blocks. It comes in cli - wireless_script_1.2.sh or gui - wireless_script_zenity_1.2.sh'
Let me know any issues you have with it. My contact details are in the readme.txt (also the wireless results.txt generated by running the script includes code tags for forums - so please copy and paste the whole document when pasting on forums to enable this function)

I need to design a USB diagnostic tool which can monitoring USB registers' content inside a ARM based MCU. I've already clear that how to judge the USB registers are correct or not during transmission, while I don't know how to implement such a program. Is there any similar code or existing linux module that can be used as a reference?

I have looked for and found several tools to show a system's total network usage. I have not, however, been able to find any that show this information in the context of individual processes. Do any such tools for linux exist?

Any easy to install/configure network/server monitoring tool? PLease note I'm looking for something of little lightweight here (Not something like zenoss) But I'd still like to get performance graphs and event notifying alerts. Also note this is to monitor less than 50 servers and perhaps a firewall or 2.

I have several CDs of diagnostic and recovery software (most of which are dated) but never seem to have them around when i could use them the most. Then it hit me: use a flash drive. i usually carry two flash drives around with me, so i loaded one 4GB with diagnostic/repair tools from PortableApps. So far I have CCleaner, John the Ripper, Recuva, an antivirus, and SIW (System Info. for Windows). I still have plenty of space left and was wondering what you all's favorites were, or what i might add. I'm looking to have somewhat of a suite, something for any occasion (within reason, of course.)I think everything right now i have is PC-based. i just want a suite of tools in case anyone has a non-hardware issue.

Often after using the network tool, making changes, saving changes, closing the tool, and running a 'service network restart'; the tool will not open again unless I reboot. This is the case both via System --> Administration --> Network and system-config-network (from the command line). I am in runlevel 5, as an uprivileged user when this happens.

I am new to using OpenLDAP on OpenSUSE with the yast configure tool. I have used Openldap on Fedora before and there was a slapd.conf file that I could modify. It appears that the yast does something different. Anyway I need to find out what the rootdn password is, but I cannot find it since there is no slapd.conf file.

Does anyone know of a tool to find the fastest mirrors for the repos? I know some distros have something called "fastest mirrors" or something equivalent. The fastest I can get updates is around 238 kB/s and normally, on other distros I get 10 times that speed.btw, like all the other distros, speedtest.net gives me an avg download speed of 43Mbs

i have done most of the setup for MRTG network monitor tool.
But i m stuck at configuration part.
the actual MRTG guide says following.
I m little confused about what should i put inplace of community@router.abc.xyz.
Quote:
The next step is to configure mrtg for monitoring a network device. This is done by creating an mrtg.cfg file which defines what you want to monitor. Luckily, you don't have to dive straight in and start writing your own configuration file all by yourself. Together with mrtg you also got a copy of cfgmaker. This is a script you can point at a router of your choice; it will create a mrtg configuration file for you. You can find the script in the bin subdirectory.
cfgmaker --global 'WorkDir: /home/httpd/mrtg'
--global 'Options[_]: bits,growright'
--output /home/mrtg/cfg/mrtg.cfg
community@router.abc.xyz
This example above will create an mrtg config file in /home/mrtg/cfg assuming this is a directory visible on your webserver. You can read all about cfgmaker in cfgmaker. One area you might want to look at is the possibility of using --ifref=ip to prevent interface renumbering troubles from catching you.
If you want to start rolling your own mrtg configuration files, make sure you read mrtg-reference to learn all about the possible configuration options.

I have an old Hauppauge card of some kind that I use to pull in my Dish Network stream to my PC in my office. I use mplayer or sometimes VLC to view it, but with the World Cup coming up I anticipate the need to pause Live TV or replay certain situations. What's is the best lightweight solution to accomplish this? Do I need MythTV, Xine, Freevo?

I am demo'ing Kubuntu 9.04 workstation to a customer. He has a CentOS 5.3 server (my doing). On it is our CUPS Network file server. Everyone (65 of them) print to our network printer through it using LPR/LPD (and sometimes Samba).
Problem: when Kubuntu's Print Configuration Tool went looking for printers, it found every network printer's IP address, but missed my CUPS printer server. What did I do wrong on one or both ends (I have control over both).

I have recently purchased dedicated box for game servers, I just wanted to install bandwidth monitoring software, however I have read comments regarding it as it uses lot of CPU resources. There is another method to monitor bandwidth using iptables. But that article is too complex for me: [URL]. I just want to check my overall bandwidth not from any particular ports. Any teaching commands to do that, as my new to Fedora. I use ssh to control my server.

I am trying to set up a Linux box that can act as a router (and firewall later). I have a Debian 5 installation and it has two nics in it. I am trying to use the linux route command to set up a route between the two interfaces. I am finding it difficult to do. Let me explain how I am trying to set up my network: I have the ethernet cable from my modem connecting to eth0 of my Debian box, then I have eth1 connecting to a switch, which I connect all my computers and other devices to. I want to have two different ip address schemes for the devices. So here is my interfaces file:
Code:
#eth0 connects to modem
allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet static
[code]....
So I am wondering, to get my ethernet traffic from eth0 to eth1 and vice versa, do I need to make it so the Gateway for Destination 192.168.1.0 is 10.1.1.1, and for Destination 10.0.0.0, Gateway 192.168.1.0? I have looked at the linux manpage for route and I am still confused. I have also looked at the Debian networking page, but it is still unclear to me how to do this. how I am to use the route command to get this working? Or am I not even supposed to use the route command?

My ISP has implemented a download quota between the "peak" hours of 8am and midnight. It is restricted to 100GB over a rolling 30days. I would like to track peak and off peak if possible, but only peak is really necessary.
Prior to the limits in certain hours I was using VnStat with a couple of home made scripts to log usage and calculate the rolling 30 days total. I don't really know how to tackle changing it to log only limited hours and am fairly certain my scripting skills just aren't up to it.
Is there another tool that can do what I need, I would very much prefer a console based solution. If it is console and only handles peak and off peak then I can try and script for the 30days again.Or has anyone managed to script something like this parsing from VnStat already ?
