Ubuntu Networking :: LG P1 Express Dual - Nothing On BIOS About Wireless

Feb 17, 2010

Recently I installed ubuntu in my LG P1 express dual laptop, and got it working with the sound, webcam, and LAN. It took me a while, but I have learned a lot. The thing is, I cannot manage to set up wireless networking working. For what I read and discovered, it has to do with an internal RF switch that deactivates the wifi card. On windows, one may switch it on or off with fn+F6. However, that is not working on linux. How to access and change this switch with a command or something?

Nothing on BIOS about wireless. When I do
Code:
sudo cat /var/log/messages | grep -i wireless

I get:
Code:
Feb 17 20:08:34 XXXXX kernel: [27.889915] iwl3945: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
Feb 17 20:08:34 XXXXX kernel: [29.163795] Kill switch must be turned off for wireless networking to work.

On doing: iwconfig, it reads:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
So no wlan0 is listed.

However with "sudo lshw -C network" the network is there and the driver is loaded

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Enable Wireless NIC In BIOS - Keeps Being Reset / Fix It?

Jan 22, 2010

I have an Eee PC 701 4G, and some time ago I disabled its wireless NIC in the BIOS to save energy. Now I've come to need it working again, but I can't re-enable it, because it always goes back to being disabled after I boot the eeebuntu installed on the machine. If I just enable it in the BIOS, reboot and go into the BIOS setup again, it's still enabled, but if I let the OS load it'll get disabled. I'm really at a loss here, how do I find out what's wrong? Could it be Ubuntu that does this?

Networking :: How To Express Range Of Ip Addresses

Sep 22, 2010

I do not currently fully understand relationship between binary numbers and ip addresses and subnet addresses; nor am I asking for an explanation here at LQ, when there are plenty at wikipedia and other places...

Even after reading the wikipedia article on it, I still don't grasp it completely, so I was hoping that someone who grasps it in its entirety could answer a simple question.

How can I express the range of ip addresses from 172.22.22.200 - 172.22.22.230 ?

I was trying to make a rule for iptables that only did nat on that specific range of ips, and when i tried used the "-s" flag followed by 172.22.22.200/11 it always changes to 172.0.0.0/11 in the actual rule that is created and displayed by iptables -t nat -L.

I already have many hosts defined on my network, and rather than going through each one and changing its ipaddress to 172.0.0.#, I was hoping to learn a way to represent them in the iptables rule.

Then I upgraded the BIOS on my motherboard, and suddenly everything isn't fine. I can boot to Ubuntu just fine. But when I select Windows from the GRUB menu, it just sits there with a cursor on the screen now.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Conflict Exacerbated By BIOS Trauma?

Feb 6, 2010

i am using an USB keyboard and mouse. This is awkward because I cannot select which OS to boot from, etc. Also, cannot access BIOS to potentially turn on the legacy USB function. We do not have a ps/2 keyboard, and believe me, I looked. I acquired a usb to ps/2 adaptor: Still no joy. Also, the keyboard doesn't work within the virtual Ubuntu, while it did when connected without the adaptor. Getting my hands on a ps/2 keyboard is not an option. To get into Ubuntu, I had to, within Windows, tell the computer that the Live CD was a bootable drive, so that it would be the first option over Windows, and therefore the automatic selection when I didn't (couldn't) make one.

[Code]...

This leads me into the Ubuntu 9.10 install, where I am told Ubuntu is already on the computer (half of the hard drive, with Windows XP on the 2nd half), and I can either install 9.10 beside it, or replace it. If I choose to replace it, 9.10 takes over the entire 40 GB. Part of the problem is that the partition that Ubuntu is apparently on is /dev/sda1, and Windows XP is /dev/sda2, but within the Palimpsest Disk Utility:

20 GB File System
NTFS File System
Partition 1 (HPFS/NTFS (0x07))
/dev/sda1
20 GB File Unrecognized
Unrecognized
Partition 2 (Linux (0x83))
/dev/sda2

So I'm worried that if I install 9.10 in /dev/sda1 like it wants me to, I'll be losing XP.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Dual BIOS - Some Files On USB Cannot Be Deleted

Aug 15, 2010

I still have my bios problem that about very 3 boot I have to re-flush the Bios (have dual bios). Whilst this is a workaround ...it is @#$%.
The question is: Does the OS write any thing into the bios? And does the bios interrogates the running system and makes assumptions for the next reboot.? Some files on the USB stick can't be deleted. Even with root permission. I reformatted the usb stick.

Ubuntu Networking :: Dual Boot Kubuntu / Win 7 (64bit) - Wireless Drivers?

Jan 3, 2011

I dual boot windows 7 and Kubuntu on my laptop, my wireless card works on windows 7 no problem, and luckily the company also has a linux version of the driver. My question is, how can I install packages on kubuntu without a wired internet connection, and what packages should I download to be able to install the driver on kubuntu without getting errors?

My wireless card is Realtek 8192CE.
Here is the download page for the driver, in case I missed something.
I am dual-booting Kubuntu/Windows 7 x64bit.

Ubuntu Networking :: Linksys Dual Band Wireless NUSB Adapter Not Working On 10.04

Jul 30, 2010

I'm not a new user to ubuntu but I'm stuck with a driver issue on a wireless adapter upgrade for ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx. I'm running an acer aspire am1201-e1622a with amd athlon x2 64 bit processor, however i'm only running the 32 bit version of lucid lynx. The following are a few outputs of some commands that might assist in finding the proper driver. Before though i will tell you what i have done.

I have installed a few different drivers from windows wireless driver installer such as the xp and vista 32 and 64 bit versions with no success in the computer actually recognizing that i have a wireless adapter installed. The windows wireless driver installer said that hardware was present but i was unable to scan for networks or even see that i had a choice to do that. This meaning that it didn't show i had wireless capabilities in my network manager. i tested this with gnome network manager which is the default manager for 10.04 and also with wicd with no success.

Following these tests i attempted to install a driver from source following the instructions on another forum. This allowed me to manually turn on the wireless adapter but i was still unable to find any networks. This meaning that wicd was able to see that i had a wireless adapter installed but it for some reason was unable to see any wireless networks around. I'm 100% sure my router is in range and that it is configured correctly. I have 5 other computers connect to this router along with some of them being ubuntu.

Networking :: BIOS (>2.88MB) Flash Over PXE

Dec 1, 2010

I have a problem with flashing a BIOS. I have to use PXE to boot the computer, which actually works fine through syslinux. I also managed to find a FreeDOS floppy image (1.44 MB) that will be booted using syslinux.

The problem is moving the BIOS rom on to the computer to flash. For roms that fit on to the FreeDOS img it works fine if I just add the rom and the exe for flashing to the floppy image. But one of the roms I shall work with is to big to fit even on a 2.88 MB floppy.

I found a "Howto: BIOS-Update per bootable CD (Method II)" for creating a bootable iso holding the DOS image and the additional files for flashing. Using a syslinux configuration like Code: default boot prompt 0 label boot linux memdisk initrd 20101201_091658.iso append iso the iso will be transfered to the client and I get an "A:>" DOS prompt.

According to the HowTo I should be able to switch to drive of the "cd" and access the rom file there. I've tried all drive letters, but all I get is "Invalid drive <letter>:.". I tried booting the DOS with more drivers (FDCD0001 as CD-ROM driver) but it says "No CD-ROM drive to use; XCDROM not loaded!". Additionally it promts: "SHCDX33A installed. o drives assigned. 2 drive(s) available." Here is the question:

How am I able to reach the files from the iso that are not included to the DOS image?
Or maybe there is another way to flash a large BIOS rom over PXE?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless - Lost It - 'wmaster0 No Wireless Extensions', But Then Refers To Wlan0 As The Wireless Connection

Mar 28, 2010

A friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.

Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:

1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.

2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).

3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.
