Ubuntu Networking :: KVpnc Resets Itself Every 4 Seconds?
Jun 10, 2011
When I KVpnc into a client VPN I connect, but every 4 minutes, or so, I am reconnected. Since I'm RDPing into their server remmina (and rdesktop too) loose their mind and I have to manually reconnect to the server. The attachment Screenshot-8a.png shows the display KVpnc uses to describe this when it happens. /var/log/syslog shows it happening twice here:
Code:
Jun 10 08:47:19 RyCycle avahi-daemon[797]: Withdrawing workstation service for tun0.
Jun 10 08:47:19 RyCycle NetworkManager[795]: SCPlugin-Ifupdown: devices removed (path: /sys/devices/virtual/net/tun0, iface: tun0)
Jun 10 08:47:21 RyCycle NetworkManager[795]: SCPlugin-Ifupdown: devices added (path: /sys/devices/virtual/net/tun0, iface: tun0)

Since upgrading to 10.10, I am having some difficulties with KVPNC. It used to work well. It seems to disconnect after precisely 4min 15 seconds. The log from the window is shown below with the sensitive bits redacted.
Code:
info: Reconnect after connection lost enabled, reconnecting...
debug: vpnc: /usr/sbin/vpnc
info: Gateway hostname (<redacted>) resolved to "<redacted>".
debug: vpnc version (major): "0"
debug: vpnc version (minor): "5"

I am using KVPNC (recommended by the VPN owner) on Ubuntu 9.10 using my Universities direct Ethernet connection.
I have downloaded all the .ovpn scripts to a directory. I have downloaded KVPNC from the repository (apparently for 9.10 you do not download from the KVPNC website).
I then use sudo kvpnc and select a server (since there are many based on the .ovpn files).I click connect and the script works and tells me I have a connection. See below for an example. All appears to work.
But when I actually load any Internet program e.g. Firefox it cannot find a website. This happens for all servers which have different locations around the world. When I disconnect KVPNC I still have no access. I have to remove the Ethernet cable before it works again.
debug: Connect try requested, profile: Stockholm, type: OpenVPN
debug: openvpn: /usr/sbin/openvpn
debug: Support for TUN/TAP found (compiled into kernel or kernel module already loaded).
debug: Default interface: "eth0".
debug: IP address of default interface: "my IP address".
code....
I realise there are errors e.g. the /etc/resolv.conf must be a symlink but have tried doing this and still have exactly the same issues.

I set up an ssh server and configured port forwarding on my router so that I can access the ssh server from the internet. This is working fine, also from within the LAN.
Additionally this machine should be connected to an VPN Server on the internet. Again, this is working. I get connected, the tun interface is coming up, etc.
The moment the VPN Connection is established I can not connect to the SSH Server anymore from the internet, LAN ist still working fine. I guess it has something to do with the route that is set by the VPN Connection?!
So my question is, what do I have to do to reach the ssh server from the internet while the ssh server is connected to an VPN Server itself.
ifconfig without VPN

basically I set the static ip address:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto seth0
iface seth0 inet static
[code]....
Restart networking:
"sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart"
Everything is fine but 24 hours later the server resets to the DHCP address assigned to it. I have not installed any GUI im just running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS in Hyper V. After it resets to DHCP I log into it using the dhcp address and reset the networking service "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart". It goes back to the static IP specified in interfaces. I have rebooted several times but every 24 hours it resets.
BTW - Before someone asks about iface seth0 instead of it being iface eth0. It is a Hyper V module running.[URL]
Also FYI-
# ps -ef | grep dhclient
root 1234 1 0 May19 ? 00:00:00 dhclient3 -e IF_METRIC=100 -pf /var/run/dhclient.seth0.pid -lf /var/lib/dhcp3

when I was entering a sed command, with a back-reference to the scnd set of parenthesis. 2 reset X, or so I though ... I did some experimenting, and lo and behold, I could reproduce the behaviour even on the xdm login screen, when I typed in my sed expression as the name. Not every time, not accurately, but maybe 3 out of 10 times I can reset X by pressing 2 on the numeric row in a quick succession with other keys, and the I at first thought was required to trigger the behavior is not necessary at all. Nothing in the X-log, nothing in ~/.xsession-errors.
I'm annoyed, and as X is quite sizable and spawns a truckload of processes I'm highly reluctant to try and reproduce the behaviour under the control of strace (mind you, since it seems to be "speed" related it maybe wouldn't even occur under strace ;}). I'm running Slack64 13.0 on a Thinkpad R500 with an Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics chipset, can't think of anything else that might be special with this hardware in regards to X.

Code:

pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes)

I am using amahi on a computer that has two Ethernet ports but the one identified by the system as eth0 is nonfunctional (as in hardware is dead). So, because amahi needs to use the wired connection at eth0, i did a binding switch so that the computer would look at what was eth1 as eth0 and what was eth0 as eth1. I have handed control of the network devices to NetworkManager because it really is much easier that way; but, when i turn off my computer and then later turn back on, in the ifcfg-eth0 file (located in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts) the NM_CONTROLLED setting is set back to "no" Because of this, i have to set it back to yes in the network configuration application and restart the Network Manager service for it to work again. after doing so Amahi and network/internet access work as they should. I am not sure if this is of note or not but when the network is working NetworkManger identifies the connection as "System eth1" and when the network is not working it identifies the connection as "Auto eth0" why it would reset itself and what i can do to fix it?

I ran the Kvpnc wizard and imported my config file and when I try to connect it always says connection timed out.I can connect to OpenVPN without a problem using the terminal, all I can say is kvpnc is a real pain and I don't get why I can't connect with it if I can connect without a problem from the terminal.I thought this was suppose to be a simple GUI that you just imported your config add in your cert and the cert path and that's all.

I was using KVpnc from 10.04 and today I upgraded to 11.04, however I am facing a lot of issues, here are a few
1. The minimized KVpnc disappears after connect, no clue where it goes, the other go to Unity Side Bar.
2. Once connected since I cannot see it, how do I disconnect it? I tried opening it from applications again, this time around it says it cannot resolve my VPN server.
3. I see multiple instances of KVpnc running when I do a ps -ef

I use KVpnc and openVPN to connect to my desktop at work from my laptop at home. This works fine, I can reach my desktop at the office from my laptop at home. The only problem is that when the Vpn connection is active I cannot use a browser on my laptop. In fact, I cannot connect to anything outside the office Vpn (like mail, chat etc).
I suspected it had something to do with the DNS servers at the office not being reachable from the Vpn so I added my "regular" DNS servers to the /etc/resolve.conf used when the Vpn is active, I added two lines in total on the form "nameserver <ip-address>". This did not solve the problem. I have searched the KVpn forums without finding anything, and the same goes for the openSUSE forums. Does anybody else experience the same problem?

Is there any way to run successfully umtsmon with kvpnc? Trying to build up a connection to a VPN provider using his profile openvpn and kvpnc. It connects as "low level connection" , the indicator of kvpnc remains red, but then kvpnc would not pass the network traffic through umts-mon (or better vice versa, umtsmon doesn't). In principle I would like to pass both interfaces (wireless, umts) through vpn.

I have just installed Ubuntu for the first time, and I installed sucessfully World of Warcraft, but I'm noticing some networking issues where my whole network connection seems to pause for about 5-10 seconds at a time, which I finally realized when I played WoW. So i was curious where the settings are that I can change to possible eliminate that, or what others have done to increase their network throughput on their cards.
I'm running Unbuntu 9.10 64bit with the latest version of Wine from the Synaptic Package Manager. The router is a LinksysWRT54G3G-ST and my wireless network card I think is something made from MSI I don't see where to find out what drivers are installed on it I'm probably just looking in the wrong place or I'd give more information on the card.

Ive downloaded Wicd, and after an eternity of trying to connect, it tells me that no IP address could be established. I can connect no problem when I plug in via Ethernet cable. Nothing when I try to use the wireless though.

I have enabled SNMP monitoring in my debian box (using apt-get install snmp) and configured it to allow my PC to query the server.
I'm able to query the server and get SNMP data but when I get STG to give me a per/second graph of the interface octets, it only updates the data every 12 seconds or so.
Is this a setting in SNMP which could be causing this problem? If so, how can I enable it so that SNMP can give me up to the second octet rates.

It can be summed up by saying the internet works fine some moments then becomes so laggy a few minutes later it is completely unusable. This is what has happened so far. First I went to scottrade trading platform, it takes real-time quotes of stocks and graphs them, allows you to see account information. It was working amazing for about 20 seconds, then out of nowhere the internet just stops working on it completely and wont come back. Then I tried WCIII. The patch would not download at all. I couldn't even manually get it. Then 3 minutes later I try it again and it starts making progress.
Ubuntu update files are downloading the slowest I have ever seen before. I went to ....., the videos download really fast for a few seconds then they just stop. No progress at all for at least a minute or so and then they crawl back to making progress. Web pages I visit work fine one moment, I go back to the exact same page a minute later and it doesnt work at all, takes a few minutes just to load.

Basically upon logging network manager will connect to my network, and most of the time it will only last 20 seconds or so before it disconnects and tries to reconnects, this tends to go on for quite a while. Logging off and logging on over and over worked once, for this post I opened pages between the 15 seconds that i was connected and after 20 minutes it has remained connected (every time it stays connected for longer than 5 minutes it will never disconnect again) I followed the HOWTO thread so forgive me if most of this information is useless

Is there something I'm missing? Some kind of driver issue or something else I need to change?I can connect to the non-secure connections fine, just when I try to use the secure one it craps out. I just installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 on my new Asus Eee PC 1215T, and I'm having trouble getting Internet access. When I first start up or reboot the PC, I'll have network access, but not Internet access. I'm connecting via a WAN at my university, and so the first thing you have to do is "register" the computer on the network (by visiting a certain website on their intranet) before it will allow you to access the Internet. Takes about 3 minutes to register it. I have enough time to *begin* this registration process, but I've tried several times and I can't get all the way through it before I mysteriously lose all network access. Unfortunately this is a brand new machine and came without any OS installed, so there's no way I know of to test whether this is defective hardware or not.

I have a problem with my wlan connection. it works for few seconds, then stops for few seconds and then starts again (without interaction from my side). I run Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid. The issue started few days ago. Using ethernet, there is no problem. The problem does not exist with other computers i have, there wifi and internet work continuously and flawless. I ping my wlan router. one sees that connection to the wlan router starts and stops every few seconds... (of course, internet connection then behaves analogous)

The problem is that the server hangs for a minute and returns to normal operation. During this period if a switch is polled it cannot be reached and hence Nagios shows the Flapping state on the switches. I need to understand as to why the server hangs

I have OpenVPN set up on my server at home to allow me into my home network when I'm away from home. When I set it up, I tested it using my friend's wifi so I know it works on a local geographic scale. Now I'm away from home, the TLS handshake fails to complete within 60 seconds. I assume it's timing out, as I can tracepath to the server on port 1194 successfully. From reading the OpenVPN documentation, I thought that adding "tls-timeout=120" to the client's config file would double the time allowed, but the handshake still fails with the same error message:
Code:
Tue Oct 19 10:45:17 2010 us=930956 TLS Error: TLS key negotiation failed to occur within 60 seconds (check your network connectivity)
Tue Oct 19 10:45:17 2010 us=931012 TLS Error: TLS handshake failed
Why is the option not being read correctly from the file - does it need to be in the server's config file also?
