I have had this issue for a while on my centos 5.4 dedicated server with 1and1. If I reboot my system, my connection starts and then drops in about 10 seconds after the system has booted.I connected through the serial console and noticed there was only one thing that seemed suspicious while booting. named could not start for some reason. So my question is - are these 2 problems related? If not, what could be the reason for my connection to drop?At the moment the only way of getting the connection back up is by running dhclient. This works until the next reboot.

I have a system running 11.04 and it is dropping packets on the hardwired ethernet interface to other systems on the LAN, only in the inbound direction. It drops packets every 5 seconds. I verified this with iperf. Outbound packets pass with no problems. The network card in this system is a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5752

Usually when this happens, for 10 or 20 seconds it appears to be connected (i.e. the heart symbol is there) but I can't ping google or my router, then it "realizes" it's disconnected. It takes one or two attempts to reconnect successfully by pressing the "active" button. Meanwhile throughout the disconnections and re-connections the signal is very strong (98%).
I had the same problem with my old access point, at first I thought it was the cheap/old hardware, so now I bought an "ENCORE ENDSL-A2+WIGX2 | ADSL 2+ Modem with 4 Port Wireless Router". The problem persists only with a stronger signal.
Today I realized that my newly installed Natty does not recognize the Ethernet port, I used to have it when I was working on the Ubutnu 10.10. The following is the output (only the network related part) of lshw command:

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Inspiron E1505 and I am having problems with my wireless. It is a Broadcom B43xx series wireless card. I have the restricted drivers installed but I have trouble with it maintaining a constant connection. I attend a college where in order to connect to the wi-fi you need to have their certificates installed.The wireless certificates are installed and I'm telling Ubuntu to use it in order to connect but it drops in and out. I will be connected for a minute or two but then it will randomly drop out on me. I know its not my wireless hardware because any other wireless that I connect to off campus works perfectly fine. Any ideas on how to get this to work correctly?
I hate to bring this OS up but my Windows 7 connects perfectly. (On the same laptop. I triple boot: Ubuntu, Windows 7 [gaming OS] and Backtrack4 )If it helps any the wireless AP uses WPA2-Enterprise, PEAP, and MSCHAPv2 authentication, and the CA certificate (which I have selected to use), plus my user name and password.
We have three computers at home. I have the only one running Linux, the other two are running Windows XP and using Belkin Wireless G USB Adapters. I started using Linux around November, and used a powerline ethernet cable. (It consists of two parts. One part you plug into your router and the power socket beside it, and the other you plug into your computer and the power socket beside that. It then uses the power lines as a network, and acts like a normal ethernet cable. I used the 'Auto eth0' connection without much problem). Back then, my internet would stop working once every few hours but only for firefox. Other programs such as bittorrent and Spotify continued working.
However, since I got back from holiday a few days ago the situation's worse. The internet regularly pauses (every few minutes, including spotify and msn) for about 30 seconds, and then comes back. Downloads are not cancelled, as they are when I am disconnecting from the internet, they merely seem to pause. The other two computers in our house don't have this problem, and I have tried the wireless adapter, yet it seems to pause at the same times as the wired connection. I know that it too used to work back in November.
I got a new low power file server (Atom 330 with ion), but didn't enjoy it since.
I installed Ubuntu server 9.10 64bit.
I randomly experience connection drops. As I'm installing and testing, there are lots of ssh windows open, I transfer much data using scp from my laptop to the server (all connected to wired lan).
Connection drops are as follows: ssh windows terminate with "connection reset by peer", but not always all the ssh windows terminate. For example, I edited a mediatomb config using nano, that stayed open even with scp and all other ssh windows cut.
I also have apache2 installed because I'm running urd (a usenet download tool). It seems that when I start the deamon, connection drops. So I killed apache2 to try out but that didn't solve the problem.
I left ping run all the time, and the server is pinging back all the time, which is really strange as I thought that a connection drop means the whole network interface going down.
When this drop occurs, I have to wait 2 minutes until I can ssh back into the server.
I also installed mediatomb, but it isn't really fun to stream a video to my ps3 as it always hangs after 5 to 10 minutes.

I was having terribly slow internet speed with my wireless setup. I followed someone's advice and now my internet speed is flying. However, now I lose connection a lot - almost once every few minutes. Is there any reason for the changes listed below to make me lose connection so easily?

i have an asus eeepc that i recently upgraded from ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. the wireless networking has worked great up until about 2 weeks ago. now it occasionally drops the connection (can't ping the gateway), even though the "blue bars" still say connected. my current solution is to click the bars, do a "disconnect", and then reconnect.i've ruled out the router being a problem (all 17 other wireless devices in my house remain connected), and i've ruled out a laptop hardware problem (when i dual boot into win7, i never lose my connection).
i'm new to linux (installed 9.10 back in february), but not new to computers/networking. i run a major campus lan [windows based] and have worked all aspects from the early mainframe days to client support to server admin to helpdesk - after 17 years, i'm now in management, so i've lost my edge a little... plus, being brand new to linux, i'm feeling a little lost in the troubleshooting aspect of this.i do believe that i've narrowed my problem down to "almost exactly" when this occurs. the wireless connection drops out as soon as i start to do "network intensive" stuff like watch a videos video, play a facebook flash game, or (and here's the kicker), try to run the update manager. unfortunately, this means that i have not been able to update for a few weeks now. i'm up to about 150mb worth of updates that are waiting.
I've had a computer running Ubuntu connected to my TV for a few weeks now, but as of yesterday, I can't get it to keep a connection to the Internet. Everything works well for an hour or so after a reboot, but then no WAN connections work. When this happens, no sites load in Firefox or Chrome, I can't ping Google, I can't SSH to the box from work, and none of the pages I have running on apache load from remote computers. However, all local area connections seem to work fine. SSH from within my LAN takes much longer than usual, but it does still connect.

I can see other networks on my laptop, but they are all locked so i cant test and see if i can connect to them so i went to my friends house and was connect fine for over an hour.
Also my PS3 and my windows box connect to my router and internet just fine.
I then assumed that this was a hardware issue then with my wireless card on my laptop. So i called up lenovo and they sent me a new wireless card. I installed it and still had the same problem.

I've got a Dell Latitude 131L with Broadcom B4311, running Ubuntu 10.04. Wireless networking generally works just fine, but I lose my connection when the computer is suspended, and I have to reconnect manually from the drop down menu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had my desktop running ubuntu 10.10 at my sisters house hooked up to a router sharing internet with her boyfriend never had a problem with it there. I moved into my own apartment this week plugged the cable modem directly into the broadcom ethernet card and couldn't get an ip or anything it wouldn't connect period so I ended up hooking it up usb which works but only at speeds of 5-7mbit when I have 15mbit connection. So I put another ethernet card in hoping it was just problem with the card and tried it that worked.
I got a connection but it was incredibly slow like getting maybe 5k a second so I open network tools in administration menu and start pinging google. While I'm waiting on a bandwidth test to complete and it takes off getting like 20mbit keeps that connection for a while then out of nowhere just drops to almost nothing. Again for a few minutes then falls off completely so I restart and it does the exact same thing starts off slow then something clicks and it works great for 5 min then nothing?
I bought this new computer with an Atheros AR9285 wireless adapter, signal dropped out after a couple of minutes, sometimes reconnected, I looked up different posts on [URL] and [URL].
First I installed linux-backports and linux-backports-wireless, still dropped. Then I installed compat-wireless-2.6.33 and it still dropped. Finalley I blacklisted the driver with gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ath_pci.conf and it still drops. What should I do, it seems to pick it up again after 30 sec or so, but it a bit frustrating.
P.S.: It seems to be getting much better now that I have the torrent program shut down.
In order to get my shares working I first have to connect to the windows shares from the Ubuntu machine. Then I can connect to the Samba shares from the windows machine. If I don't continue to use the shares. It'll drop the connection and I have to unmount the windows shares and start the process over. The wireless network still shows as being connected but I get an error on the windows machine if I try to connect. I've Googled this and it appears to be a Windows problem. I know this is a ubuntu forum but thought I'd ask for any info. I believe that this is also what is giving me shared printer issues as well.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having a really strange problem with my wifi connection on my laptop. The ethernet connection works fine and so does the wifi connection - as long as I sit within one meters range from my router! As soon as I take the laptop further away the connection drops. The router is still being found by network-manager and the signal is just below 100%, but when I try to establish a connection it fails.
I'm sitting here on a fresh Ubuntu 10.04 install, and I had exactly the same problem with 9.10. That time I went through a lot of different procedures, and in some strange way the problem was solved. I haven't been that lucky this time though, I've tried reinstalling network-manager, using ndiswrapper, installing the wireless backports package, tried all kinds of drivers.. nothing works.
There shouldn't be any problem with the connection itself; I've had a perfect connection downstairs but now I can't even connect if I stand two metres from the router! Has anyone experienced anything like this and managed to fix it? My wireless card is Atheros AR2413. This is an example from daemon.log

I have an Acer Aspire One ZG5. 160GB HD, 1GB RAM model. I've done a fresh install and an upgrade of 10.04 and have the same problem both ways. I am able to connect to my wireless connection but it is dropped after about 5 minutes and have to wait about the same time to reconnect. I've had to roll back to 9.10 being that I use the netbook for work and school on a daily basis.

It works most of the time, but sometimes in the middle of a movie or a song it will drop/hiccup--saying it is "not reachable". I am not overtasking the server at all, and merely playing an mp3 that takes up less than 10% of the bandwidth, yet it drops it for a split second.
I have a WRT160N router (DD-WRT of course) with 4 clients connected (2 of which are wired). The ubuntu server is connected via ethernet and all machines have the same issue. It can't be the router because another Windows machine works just fine for streaming these files. I just can't understand how it can lose connection for a second or so. It may just be the file-system or some service that is hiccuping, but I have no idea...
I'm running 9.10 on a desktop that connects to my network using a PCMCIA wifi card plugged into a PCI cardbus adapter. Sometimes, (it seems to be when too much data has gone over the card), I lose connectivity. nm-applet still shows me connected but I can't even get to my router (ping or gui). I use ndiswrapper for the driver.
If I unplug the PCMCIA card and then plug it back in I get going again. My questions are:
1) Anyone have an idea why this might be happening?
2) Is there a way in software for me to unload and reload the wifi card?
I have a dual booth system (ubuntu (64 bit) and windows 7 (also 64))... In both systems I have trouble with my wifi:Sometimes it works for a few hours without trouble and then I stops working every 10/15 seconds after reconnecting. In windows it keeps on reconnecting, but in ubuntu sometimes also the wifi logo/picture disappears from my panel, so I can't start wifi again or see it's status.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a server running Ubuntu 10.04. I use it for mysql as well as samba file sharing across 10 computers. It had been working out great. I only ever needed to restart after I would install updates and to sort of thing. Starting this week however, it has started kicking all the computers off of both mysql and the samba shares every few minutes. It is very strange. The mysql connection can be restored just by closing the database and reopening it. The file shares are only a problem if you try to access them though a program other than your file browser (e.g. save a file you are working on in word to the server). The server never shuts down and all services can be reconnected immediately. It is very strange. I do believe that the server installed some automatic updates at the beginning of this week when this all started happening. I am not sure if one of the updates is causing the server to do this or not.

When I check for wireless connections I can see none at all and the "Disable/Enable wireless conncection" has disappeared, the Network one is still there. I get an auto reconnection if I reboot and all is well for another 15 minutes. Is there any way i can recover the situation without a reboot? I am trying to install the hplip-3.11.5 driver for my new wireless printer,the program take a while to install and by the time it has started looking for the printer the connection has dropped out. I can't be sure but I don't think it was dropping out before I connected the printer using my wired pc. All good fun but I'd like to get it sorted so I can get the engine back in my motorbike, the sort of technology I prefer!
View 3 Replies View RelatedOn every machine that SSHes in, the connection gets dropped randomly between immediately, and 30 minutes into the session, while the user is actively using the remote system (typing, etc). Before, during and after the disconnection, the system responds to pings regularly (0% packet loss).It takes about 5-10 minutes before I can make an SSH connection again.I have tried restarting SSH on the server and rebooting the server. I even removed and reinstalled sshd and it is still happening.What might be causing these random disconnects and how might I solve this?

I have a Samba file server with one windows & one Ubuntu workstation. The Ubuntu workstation is a Samba print server. The problem is that the XP machine cannot access the printer. If I restart Samba on the print server it works again. There may be a pattern but I havn't figured it out yet.
