Ubuntu Networking :: Tweaks - Connection Seems To Pause For About 5-10 Seconds
Jan 7, 2010
I have just installed Ubuntu for the first time, and I installed sucessfully World of Warcraft, but I'm noticing some networking issues where my whole network connection seems to pause for about 5-10 seconds at a time, which I finally realized when I played WoW. So i was curious where the settings are that I can change to possible eliminate that, or what others have done to increase their network throughput on their cards.
I'm running Unbuntu 9.10 64bit with the latest version of Wine from the Synaptic Package Manager. The router is a LinksysWRT54G3G-ST and my wireless network card I think is something made from MSI I don't see where to find out what drivers are installed on it I'm probably just looking in the wrong place or I'd give more information on the card.

I'm using a MacBook 2.1 with Lucid.
After i hit Enter in GRUB, there is a message on top of the screen saying "booting up", and it stays there for 20 to 30 seconds. Then everything proceeds normally. I think i caught a message saying that something couldn't be found, but it flashed too rapidly.
Here is an extract of my dmesg. I'm assuming the part between [] is timestamps, and it takes about 40 seconds to go from GRUB to the Login screen, so it fits. Nothing is happening during 32 seconds.

While playing videos on Linux (both Mint and Fedora) I noticed that the video will often pause for about 10 seconds or so while the audio keeps playing. After the 10 second freeze the video resumes where it should be. I've had this problem both on Mint 9 and Fedora 13 and 14.

my netbook shares it's wireless connection to my desktop. i've done this through the gui (edit connections > eth0 > ipv4 settings > shared to others) and it has worked for the last i don't know how many months.recently it had become a bit touchy with regards to how it was set up. it didn't work unless the netbook was already booted and wired in at the time of booting the desktop.now however it's gotten even worse and all i get when i connect them together is
"connection established" *pause* "disconnected" *pause* "connection established" *pause* "disconnected" *pause* "connection established" *pause* "disconnected" *pause* "connection established" *pause* "disconnected" *pause* "connection established" *pause* "disconnected" *pause* "connection established" *pause* "disconnected" *pause* "connection established" *pause* "disconnected" *pause* "connection established" *pause* "disconnected" and so on.

I recently reinstalled 10.04. The wireless worked fine for a week or so, but not it cant get a connection for more than a few seconds. Ive downloaded Wicd, and after an eternity of trying to connect, it tells me that no IP address could be established. I can connect no problem when I plug in via Ethernet cable. Nothing when I try to use the wireless though.

I have an ASUS G50Vt laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it. I have a WiFi Link 5100 wireless device. I use these settings to connect to it:URL...My problem is, once I connect, within 30 seconds I lose my Internet connection. It goes on and off seemingly whenever it wants. Is there something I'm missing? Some kind of driver issue or something else I need to change?I can connect to the non-secure connections fine, just when I try to use the secure one it craps out. Halp?

I just installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 on my new Asus Eee PC 1215T, and I'm having trouble getting Internet access. When I first start up or reboot the PC, I'll have network access, but not Internet access. I'm connecting via a WAN at my university, and so the first thing you have to do is "register" the computer on the network (by visiting a certain website on their intranet) before it will allow you to access the Internet. Takes about 3 minutes to register it. I have enough time to *begin* this registration process, but I've tried several times and I can't get all the way through it before I mysteriously lose all network access. Unfortunately this is a brand new machine and came without any OS installed, so there's no way I know of to test whether this is defective hardware or not.

I have a problem with my wlan connection. it works for few seconds, then stops for few seconds and then starts again (without interaction from my side). I run Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid. The issue started few days ago. Using ethernet, there is no problem. The problem does not exist with other computers i have, there wifi and internet work continuously and flawless. I ping my wlan router. one sees that connection to the wlan router starts and stops every few seconds... (of course, internet connection then behaves analogous)

I have had this issue for a while on my centos 5.4 dedicated server with 1and1. If I reboot my system, my connection starts and then drops in about 10 seconds after the system has booted.I connected through the serial console and noticed there was only one thing that seemed suspicious while booting. named could not start for some reason. So my question is - are these 2 problems related? If not, what could be the reason for my connection to drop?At the moment the only way of getting the connection back up is by running dhclient. This works until the next reboot.

I have a Dell laptop with a bcm4312 wireless card. Every once in a while though, the laptop is unable to send or receive any data for 30 seconds. The connection is not dropped, and nothing shows up in any system logs. Both the wl and b43 drivers have this problem, but it works fine under vista.

I'm doing a lot of print to file and selecting pdf. It is an awesome feature. But I'd like to add a location to the "Save in folder" drop down menu. What would be better is to add a location, and then make it the default location. It would also be awesome to change the default from .ps to .pdf. This would greatly speed up my save to file process.

On my initial move from Ubuntu to Xubuntu my FPS dropped from around 36 to 4.Recommendations from WINE were to make sure I was using proprietary drivers, and that any desktop affects like compiz fusion were disabled. Opening Menu > System > Additional Drivers revealed the following:
Querying this in #xubuntu on Freenode I learned that there is a known bug that drivers will be in use although this applet may report otherwise. On activating the other driver, reactivating the original 'current version', and rebooting, lspci -k outputs:

I have a dell studio hybrid PC which I am hooking up to my TCL brand 40" LCD TV to use as a media center pc. The problem I am having is that I can't get the TV's native 1920x1080 resolution to display properly. The rendered desktop doesn't quite fit in the screen (I think its the top and bottom edges that are cut off) so for example the menu bar at the top is completely off the screen.
1680x1050 works fine in the sense that it fits the full desktop to the screen size, but its not the native res. In the resolution changer utility, it recognizes that my TV is a TCL brand but mentions 36 in the model name (the TV I have has 40 in the model name to denote 40") so I think Ubuntu is recognizing the wrong size TV. How can I finagle the screen settings to make the 1920x1080 fit properly on my monitor? Or get Ubuntu to correctly recognize my TV? My TV is a no-name brand so its hard to find info on it or others setting up linux with it.

I've been looking for a tweak that would allow me to store temp and log files in ram. I've found a few that involved editing the fstab file, but they were either Ubuntu articles or they were over a year old and perhaps didn't apply to Fedora 14.I hear there is also a 'noatime' command that can help speed up processes by telling the kernel not to saved when files are accessed. And what are the advantages and disadvantages of noatime, and writing log/tmp files to ram?

I'm relatively new to Linux, but willing to take a plunge and climb the steep learning curve! I've recently installed Fedora 10 on a spare box I'd like to have running in the lounge by the TV as a TV recorder. Before starting out with MythTV, I would like to get the box running the basics... and hit no major snags with display / audio drivers. I've finally managed to connect to the box via VNC from my macbook over the wireless network. The Apple standard client is slow over wifi, so have started using 'Chicken of the VNC' as the client. At the server end, I intalled vnc-server via yum. I've also tweaked things in ~/.vnc/xstartup so that my default window manager over vnc is gnome.

Since I'm RDPing into their server remmina (and rdesktop too) loose their mind and I have to manually reconnect to the server. I have enabled SNMP monitoring in my debian box (using apt-get install snmp) and configured it to allow my PC to query the server.
I'm able to query the server and get SNMP data but when I get STG to give me a per/second graph of the interface octets, it only updates the data every 12 seconds or so.
Is this a setting in SNMP which could be causing this problem? If so, how can I enable it so that SNMP can give me up to the second octet rates.

It can be summed up by saying the internet works fine some moments then becomes so laggy a few minutes later it is completely unusable. This is what has happened so far. First I went to scottrade trading platform, it takes real-time quotes of stocks and graphs them, allows you to see account information. It was working amazing for about 20 seconds, then out of nowhere the internet just stops working on it completely and wont come back. Then I tried WCIII. The patch would not download at all. I couldn't even manually get it. Then 3 minutes later I try it again and it starts making progress.
Ubuntu update files are downloading the slowest I have ever seen before. I went to ....., the videos download really fast for a few seconds then they just stop. No progress at all for at least a minute or so and then they crawl back to making progress. Web pages I visit work fine one moment, I go back to the exact same page a minute later and it doesnt work at all, takes a few minutes just to load.

Basically upon logging network manager will connect to my network, and most of the time it will only last 20 seconds or so before it disconnects and tries to reconnects, this tends to go on for quite a while. Logging off and logging on over and over worked once, for this post I opened pages between the 15 seconds that i was connected and after 20 minutes it has remained connected (every time it stays connected for longer than 5 minutes it will never disconnect again) I followed the HOWTO thread so forgive me if most of this information is useless

2 ) Wireless Brand, Model and Wireless Chipset:
