Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Dataflow Over Wireless - Get 1 Or 2 Ping Packets

Jun 4, 2011

I'm running Lucid (10.04), dualboot vista, but I'm having some issues with my wireless USB dongle. Previously (in a different) location, the network wasn't showing in my wireless network tab, and that was never resolved. But now I'm in a new place, and what I'm finding is that my network is showing up in the networks tab, and I can select it, enter the PSK, and it starts to interrogate, but never seems to manage all the way through to getting internet.

Im not sure whether the machine is able to connect to the network, but not the wider internet, or what. The only indication I'm getting is that its connecting for a length of time, then gives up. I have managed to get the update tool pop up - so I'm not sure if thats an indicator of some internet connection or not (presumably it only generates the list of packages to update when it can connect to the net and see what updates are required...) I believe its also managed to get 1 or 2 ping packets through to the internet. I'm driving a belkin N-wireless USB adapter, N10117.

Networking :: Firewall - Allow Packets Coming From Internet After Authenticating And To By Pass Packets Generated From Internal LAN?

Feb 8, 2010

i have a linux server runnig oracle applications. i need to access this server from putty using ssh through internet. i did by registering my static ip with the dnydns.org and i am able to connect to the server. but now there is no security to authenticate any user as any one knowing the password can login to it.

i thought of configuring the firewall of linux server but the client ip`s are not static and they change continiously. so thought of keeping one more pc between the server and the router which will do the work of authenticating. but i am confuse as how to configure it to allow the packets coming from the internet after authenticating and to by pass the packets generated from internal LAN?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Router Connected - Can Ping But No Internet

Mar 1, 2011

This morning my Ubuntu 10.10 Meerkat desktop suddenly lost internet connection, but stayed connected to my netgear router. After the usual "tried turning it off and on again" methods didn't work, I booted into my Win Vista partition to find that connected no problem. I have another Ubuntu netbook and a Windows 7 laptop in the house as well as an Android. These all connect fine. It appears to be just the desktop Ubuntu.

I can ping my router 192.168.0.1 and log into it's UI via browser. I can also ssh to the box. My router does not do any filtering or blocking. I've tried disabling the firewall and changing the nameservers in /etc/network/interfaces and dhclient.conf as well as the network manager. The network card is a Belkin 54g but I can't remember the exact model no. it was bought years ago.

Code:

When I do a restart of the networking service it spits out the error:

Ubuntu Networking :: Ping ICMP Warning - Duplicates Packets

Sep 28, 2010

When I ping our Microsoft Windows terminal server "cluster" farm, I get ICMP warnings that there are duplicate packets. I am able to rdesktop to the cluster with no problems. We are trying to setup nagios to run on this Ubuntu configuration and nagios is reporting the following error:
"PING WARNING - DUPLICATES! Packet Loss=0%, RTA=.98ms.
FPing reports duplicates as well. Is there a setting in the Arp table that needs to be set differently because the "Cluster" MAC address isn't an actual hardware MAC but a virtual MAC address?

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Ping Over Wireless But Can Ping Over Wired?

Jul 24, 2010

I have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.

When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.

If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.

I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.

I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can Ping But No Internet Access

Jan 5, 2010

I have a Compaq Presario R3000 with Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit that I just installed last night. I'm using a Zyxel G-102 Wireless card and Actiontec GT701WG wireless modem.

When I try to connect to the 'net, the network does show up and it connects strong (100%). It also shows multiple neighbors networks. It pings at 99% success (with over 900 sent as I write this) but when I open Firefox it can't connect, it just times out. I've used WEP security and have switched off security as well. I tried hooking up to the modem via USB and get the same result. It acts like a Firewall issue but there isn't one installed - at least that I can find and the Firewall in the modem is off. I ran FF in root with gksu firefox as suggested in another thread. I tried www.ubuntu.com and the header loaded but that was all. Then it timed out.

I'm new to Linux but have used Puppy Linux with this machine and card, etc. so I know it can/does work with Linux. I wanted a more refined distro and chose Ubuntu.

With having the wireless interface get into monitor mode, I want to forward the captured packets from the wireless interface to the other Ethernet interface so that a different computer which is connected to this machine via Ethernet receives those packets. I checked that alll packets are received in the wireless interface using TCPDUMP. I tried to forward those packets with IPTABLES like 'iptables -p FORWARD -i ath0 -o eth2 -j ACCEPT' However, I couldn't see any packets forwarded to eth2 using TCPDUMP.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connected To Internet But Can't Ping Systems On LAN?

Oct 5, 2010

I've got Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop and have recently (within the last 72 hours) started having trouble connecting to other machines on my local network. I'm unable to ping both my router and a server set up in the room beside me.

1. I have tried pinging my server and router from other machines and it works fine. Accessing the server via HTTP works from all machines except for my laptop.

2. I am, however, connected to my router via wireless and can access the internet. Also, if I connect via an ethernet cable I am able to ping both my server and router, although I'd love to be able to go wireless.

3. I assume something's wrong with my wireless setup, but I really can't figure out what. Possibly related note: my wireless has been disconnecting unpredictably on my home network (WPA).

Let me know if you'd like to see any command output and I'll get it to you asap! I've got a Dell Studio 1558 w/ the dreaded Broadcom BCM4312 wireless controller.

Fedora Networking :: Can't Browse Internet But Cant Ping On F10

Jun 19, 2009

I'm using FC10 on my box at work. It is behind an anthenticated proxy for internet connection. In Gnome, I configured the Network Proxy through the GUI, as my browsers too.

So I can browse internet pages, install packages thru Add/Remove Software GUI, but I cant do it in the command line, using yum install, for example. Then trying to figure it out, I saw that it cant reach the package mirrors. It isnt a DNS problem, I set the /etc/resolv.conf correctly, as the host command works correclty. I can ping the local pcs on the network too. Firewall is disabled. Below some simple tests:

[rtovo@davinci ~]$ ping mirrors.fedoraproject.org
connect: Network is unreachable
[rtovo@davinci ~]$ host mirrors.fedoraproject.org
mirrors.fedoraproject.org is an alias for wildcard.fedoraproject.org.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Can't Ping Or Otherwise Access Internet

Mar 14, 2009

I just downloaded and installed the latest Cent OS 5. I disabled SE linux, turned off the firewall, and selected the Server package options when installing. I plan on using this as a router/firewall between my internal network and the internet, as well as web server, etc. The first thing I did was to configure the two NICs, internal one with 192.168.7.1 address and the other with an address from my ISP (I have a static address, but I also tried to let the DSL router assign an address via DHCP). Everything looked fine, I checked /etc/resolv.conf and my routes. I was able to ping the DSL router from the server, but I was not able to do a ping or lookup on anything outside my network. I tried host, dig, nslookup, etc, no luck. Obviously then, I was not able to browse the net with firefox.

Networking :: Linux Router / Config Should Be Done On The Box So That IPs Inside The LAN Can Be Ping From The Internet?

Mar 4, 2010

I am using centos box as a router. WAN side has a public ip and lan side also using a public ip. I configured dhcp server on the LAN side and it is working perfectly, pcs on the LAN side can able to access the internet.

Problem: Considering the fact that LAN IPs is using Public IP and it is presumed that from the internet it can be able to ping IPs inside the LAN but, alas, it couldn't.

No firewall has been config!

Question: What config should be done on the box so that IPs inside the LAN can be ping from the internet?

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Broken After Update / No Internet / No Ping / Buit RDC Works

Feb 5, 2010

I posted this already in the absolute beginner section, but no answer was found, so I thought I might try this place..Long story as short as possible:

- I installed Ubuntu 9.10 for a friend who was fed up with WinXP crashing all the time

- After the install, networks was broken. I could ping sites outside the LAN, could connect to the router via firefox, but NO application could access the web. - The router works just fine, I tried with my own notebook.

- Disabling ipv6 in grub (edit /etc/default/grub and 'sudo update-grub') seemed to solve the problem.

- Then update the standard packages + install restricted extras and boom, Network gone: No ping to sites outside the LAN, no nothing. Still can connect fine to the router and even the remote desktop connection works, connecting over the internet. But that's it.

I have tried setting the mpu to a value recommended by my isp, I have set static ip and dns, I really don't now what to try any more.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Connection Can't Even Ping Router

Feb 4, 2010

Previously posted under "Wireless Connection Can't Even Ping Router".I've been using Ubuntu for two years. About a year ago I switched to Kubuntu because I prefer the KDE desktop. Two weeks ago I bought a new laptop: Dell Vostro v13. I installed Kubuntu 9.10 from the live CD and everything worked! Well, almost. I also set up a home wireless network with a new Belkin N+ router from WalMart. When I try to connect to my router, the Plasma Network Manager reports that I'm connected and the assigned IP address, but I'm not truly connected! I can't even ping my own router, all packets are lost.

This problem is intermittent, sometimes I connect fine. I dual-boot with Windoze7 and it connects without problems. Also, if I connect with Windoze, then re-boot into Kubuntu, it seems to "wake-up" the connection somehow and it works. I might also add that I connect without difficulty to other routers in my neighborhood, at work, in airports, etc.My old laptop was also running Kubuntu 9.10, and it connected to the Belkin router without problems, although it was a different wireless card and driver. I also tried Ubuntu 9.10 from the live CD and it also reported a connection, IP address, etc. I couldn't ping the router from that connection either!

Fedora Networking :: Mobile Broadband / Dialing Succeeds But No Ping To Internet

Feb 1, 2011

In Fedora 14 (kernel 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.i686) I am not able to get an internet connection on my laptop via mobile broadband. However dialing succeeds and the provider starts the daily flate rate accounting.I tried the graphical network management as well as wvdial and even sakis3g (achitecture free variant from URl...).With wvdial (well configured I think) and sakis3g the dial connection is established (permanent blue light on Huawei E169). "netstat -ie" shows that the network configuration has changed (device pp0 instead of eth0 and "netstat -rn" shows that default router is set to 10.64.64.64). But "ping" does not receive data from any internet IP address and browser cannot render any website. A later check call of my prepaid balance said that the daily rate countdown was initiated (so I pay for nothing).

The GUI of the KDE network icon seems to work similar but does not set the usb key into the connected state (only blinking blue light and break-off after a few seconds).Disabling of selinux didn't change anything as well. With Mandriva 2010 I didn't have any problems with same mobile key and provider.
