Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Connection Can't Even Ping Router

Previously posted under "Wireless Connection Can't Even Ping Router".I've been using Ubuntu for two years. About a year ago I switched to Kubuntu because I prefer the KDE desktop. Two weeks ago I bought a new laptop: Dell Vostro v13. I installed Kubuntu 9.10 from the live CD and everything worked! Well, almost. I also set up a home wireless network with a new Belkin N+ router from WalMart. When I try to connect to my router, the Plasma Network Manager reports that I'm connected and the assigned IP address, but I'm not truly connected! I can't even ping my own router, all packets are lost.
This problem is intermittent, sometimes I connect fine. I dual-boot with Windoze7 and it connects without problems. Also, if I connect with Windoze, then re-boot into Kubuntu, it seems to "wake-up" the connection somehow and it works. I might also add that I connect without difficulty to other routers in my neighborhood, at work, in airports, etc.My old laptop was also running Kubuntu 9.10, and it connected to the Belkin router without problems, although it was a different wireless card and driver. I also tried Ubuntu 9.10 from the live CD and it also reported a connection, IP address, etc. I couldn't ping the router from that connection either!
I have Mandriva One 2009.0 (192.168.1.100) on one box and Mandriva Free 2010.0 (192.168.1.118) on the other. I can ping router (192.168.1.1) from both of these boxes but I can't ping one box to the other and the other way around. What's going on?.
Do I have to change some settings in router?. Or is it firewall issue on those two machines?. Both of these boxes are connected by cable. Symbol of the router: TL-WR340G.
I moved my server and network equipment, and now the wireless works but I cannot get my server online. I host a website, so this is kind of urgent.
I have a wireless router and can access the internet fine on my laptop. My server is wired & connected to the router. It sets up the networking properly.. ifconfig has an ip address, the default gateway is present. But I cannot ping google, or even the router. It says destination host unreachable.
So I go back to the laptop to check the router settings.. sometimes it likes to assign the server the wrong internal ip. But, I can't access the router settings either! The page (192.168.1.1) times out. Same with trying to ping the router. How can the laptop be online if it can't reach the router?
Oddly, ifconfig on my laptop reports an ip address starting with 99.233. It's always given me an internal address starting with 192.168. What's going on here? Is the router not allocating an internal ip? I use wicd to connect, if it's relevant.
We have a windows laptop that can only get a "local connection". Now it does sound like the router is forwarding directly to my laptop, instead of allocating internal ips.
when I was still at my university room where the connection would work after a few reboots. After moving back home the connection worked on and off for a day before not working at all. NetworkManager is telling me that I am connected and have an ip address, etc, but nothing is able to get an internet connection. I am able to ping myself but am not able to ping my router. Everything works fine on M$ and other PC's on the network, it's just my ubuntu 10.04 that is playing up.
This morning my Ubuntu 10.10 Meerkat desktop suddenly lost internet connection, but stayed connected to my netgear router. After the usual "tried turning it off and on again" methods didn't work, I booted into my Win Vista partition to find that connected no problem. I have another Ubuntu netbook and a Windows 7 laptop in the house as well as an Android. These all connect fine. It appears to be just the desktop Ubuntu.
I can ping my router 192.168.0.1 and log into it's UI via browser. I can also ssh to the box. My router does not do any filtering or blocking. I've tried disabling the firewall and changing the nameservers in /etc/network/interfaces and dhclient.conf as well as the network manager. The network card is a Belkin 54g but I can't remember the exact model no. it was bought years ago.
When I do a restart of the networking service it spits out the error: Code: Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0 However, as I said the wireless itself works. /etc/network/interfaces:

So I installed 10.4 on a new Toshiba Satellite L645DWhen I connect to my wireless at home, the Network Manager shows that I am connected but I can't reach any websites via ping or firefox. I am having problems connecting to my new router. It just does not appear in the list of connections under Network Manager. It is not a problem with my laptop's wireless adapter as I can connect to another wireless router. It is also not a problem with the router itself - my Nintendo Wii can pick it up over Wi-Fi and use it and that is further away from the router. It also works if I ethernet it straight into the laptop.The router was provided by Sky Broadband and is a D-Link, pretty standard type of ADSL router with four ethernet ports, wireless and telephone cable socket. I am using the default settings for the SSID and network key, as well as the encryption type (WPA).Ubuntu version = 10.04. The wireless adapter is a very standard issue onboard Intel device but as I say, I can connect to my old Belkin wireless router no problem.
I'm trying to configure my Linksys WRT54G2 wireless router for my DSL connection. I select PPPOE as the connection type and when I go to connect I get the message cannot get ip address from ppoe server.
We just set up a password for our wireless router (D-link DIR-615). WPA personal. After doing that, I can no longer connect to the internet. I can connect to the wireless router, however. Same problem for the Apple Macs in the house. We called Dlink. The fix for a Mac was to add DNS servers (4.2.2.2) under TCP/IP But there doesn't seem to be anywhere to specify a DNS server in Ubuntu.
I was having an issue with my wireless connection last week, and sometimes even my hardwired connection. It had seemed like every time my PC went into standby, or any low-power mode, the WiFi would stop working. I used the "power off" command and got it back and running. When I boot up the computer in the morning, I am unable to connect until I reset the wireless router. Unfortunately, I did not have the presence of mind to get iwconfig first thing in the morning, but I did reboot the laptop and grabbed iwconfig before I connected and after I connected. Now, for some reason, the router worked when I rebooted, but I had to reset it this morning. Any ideas? iwconfig below:

I've been at this the last 3 hours now or so. I am not a very good with Linux, I am fine with all other areas. I have this laptop, with a Intel Pro 2200BG card. The idea was to install a lxde lightwieght on it and use PCLINUXOS, because its "easy". This computer is for internet browsing and thats it. Under the Network Center -- I can see all networks, including neighbours. When I try to connect to my router via Wireless, I get connection failed over and over.
I then tried doing all the following: Changing the router from WEP to, WPA, WPA2 personal, WPA2 Enterprise Changing the SSID, broadcasting to ON, changing the SSID name I've used various different passwords, and reset the router now about 50 times. I am connecting to my Router (as Ive changed the SSID and noticed it picks up the new name). (Yes I can see the correct MAC addreess). Yes I am on the right channel, all good here.
My Nintendo DS is connecting fine with all the changed settings now. The wireless card worked fine under Windows XP (However I just removed the operating system since I really had no need for it). I've tried every other mode, it works wired. Like I had explained above, I downloaded a what I thought was an easy verison (distro), I was really hoping to get away from the crazy windows life with crazy errors and instability.
I did try enabling display log, and doing it manually by adding a connection, etc. The log tells me about as less would a windows event log: it says Problems occurred during the network connectivity test This can be caused by invalid network config or problems w/ your momde / router Reluanch, etc.
I can connect to the internet fine with wvdial and wvdialconf; heck I am even posting from my PCLinuxOS FM Distro. I want to setup an ethernet connection between two PC's, one running PCLOS 2010.11 FullMonty and the other Knoppix 6.2.0. Knoppix is fine and setting up a connection is simple but with PCLOS I have been having many problems trying to set it up. I tried using the drakconnect tool but it did not work. I tried assigning it a static IP Address but the other PC would still not pick it up and to to it all I keep getting the same error message about problems during the network connectivity test!
I have just installed Linux Mint 8 to an Asus A6000. My problem is that the computer won't connect with my wireless router. I have tried with MAC-adress and such, but still no respons. I also tried to connect with a cable to my modem, but no response there either.
I think I may lack some drivers, to what I think is Broadcom b43, but I am not sure. I tried to download the drivers on my other computer, and transfered them to the Asus. I managed to install 2/4 drivers, but on the two others, I get this message "Failed to fetch ... Couldn't reach archive.ubuntu.com"
I changed the network setting and caused a problem of wireless network. After I completely reinstall the OS of Fedora 13, the wireless network is still incorrect for connection to router.
I have Fedora 13 installed on my Fujitsu Siemens Laptop. I can only connect to my wireless router when the laptop is close to it. When I try using the laptop in the next room, it keeps asking for the password and eventually disconnects after 3 or 4 attempts. The wireless connection worked fine in Windows XP.
My computer takes a while to connect to my Linksys N router.
It used to connect in a snap of your finger automatically.
Now it does not.
Yes I have tried manual configuration, and double checking the password, ssid, protocols, and security type.
WPA2 personal is the security type.
There are maybe 4 different ways I know how to connect. The most annoying thing is when this box pops up saying to type in a password for the network connection.. and keeps popping up even when everything is right.
All I need is a reliable, easy, and automatic program to connect me to the internet, maybe even before I log into my system.
Linux Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition is my system. Brilliant system.
This is not exactly Ubuntu question but i don't know where else to ask. I'm trying to setup a Wireless Linux router. My ISP provides multicast IPTV. I've got the whole thing setup'ed with igmpproxy and hostpad. On wired connection IPTV works flawlessly, but on wireless connection IPTV glitches badly and router start to time out. I have internet access through 3G/4G USB dongle direct into my Ubuntu 10.04 box. Works great! Now I would like to share this connection out through my Netgear WGR614 wireless (and wired) router. Any clues? I've tried the simple (GUI) instructions using Network Manager, but just can't seem to get it right. Previously, I had DSL and this plugged nicely into the WGR614 and internet and ethernet access was had by all. Now, I'm a bit confused on how to get the sharing (ethernet and wireless) between my Ubuntu box and the wired/wireless network while at the same time getting Internet access to all through the Ubuntu box.
Ubuntu 11.04, wireless adapter BCM4312.The connection works for a while, for a random length of time from a few minutes to a few hours, then stops working. The laptop says it's connected, and the router says it's connected, but the browser can't find any Web pages, it can't find the router, and there is no response to pings from the router or any other device on the local network or on the Internet. "Host unreachable." When I try to ping to the laptop from another one, it times out.If I shut down the computer and try again a few hours later, it works fine again for a while, then after a while it stops working again.
In case it's relevant, sometimes when I restart networking from the command line, it says "ignoring unknown interface eth1=eth1," even though ifconfig -a lists eth1 as up with an ip address. eth1 is the wireless adapter. Another laptop with Ubuntu 11.04 connects to the same router with no problems.Using a fixed IP address doesn't change anything.
I have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.
When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.
If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.
I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.
I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.
My son lost his USB Wireless stick for his Computer. I had thought I heard that if you had a second wireless router, you could use it somehow to detect the wireless router you have already set up in your home (like using a wireless card)? Is this what Ad-Hoc is? Either way, can this be done and if so how? I use a WRT54Gx2 Lynksys router and have a TRENDNET TEW-432BRP wireless router and also a spare D-link DI-514. I use ubuntu 10.04, and also wanted to know if I connected one of the router to his on the LAn port could he connect msaybe through an Ad-Hoc on my local computer here? He uses XP on his. I'm a newbie to linux and networking in general.
Connected freshly installed 10.04.2 to a wireless network through a router. Everything looks correct -- IP is assigned, connection is on, the system shows up on the router -- except that there is no internet connection and I can't ping the router or anywhere else. According to the router, the wireless signal at the ubuntu system is stronger than at the sitting-right-next-to-it windows system with *working* internet. what is this? Should I replace current driver?
I am a new user of Ubuntu...I am trying to use if for a University project. I have installed Ubuntu under a nice new partition and install was smooth. I am using my Belkin F5D8055 v1 USB adapter to connect to my router. The router registers that the IP 192.168.0.3 has connected (thats the IP assigned to the adapter) however even when trying to ping the router (192.168.0.1), I get no response.
Every three or four weeks my router and cable modem will appear to go down. Not only can I not access the internet or web, but I can't even access the router and modem's admin pages (192.168.2.1 and 192.168.100.1 respectively). However, I can successfully ping 192.168.2.1 (forgot to try pinging the modem ip).
Hard resetting both by unplugging them for about a minute or so and replugging them fixes the problem. This is what Roadrunner says to do any time connectivity is lost. This problem also used to occur on Windows as well, except that on Windows I could still browse to both the router and modem's admin websites and restart them remotely. On Ubuntu (both 9.10 and 10.04) I have to manually unplug them since I can't bring up the admin sites in a browser.
I'm not sure how to go about troubleshooting this issue, and why Linux seems to require a manual hard reset whereas it could be solved on Windows with a remote restart. I wouldn't have thought the OS would even have anything to do with that.
I tried to get Ubuntu 10.10 up and running last night, almost worked, but wireless card isn't working. I have another machine in the house running ubuntu 10.4 and it works fine. I have searched around a bit in the forums and can't find anything, so I thought I would make my own post. The wireless card is an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG, which I think is part of core (i think i read that somewhere).
I think the problem might have something to do with the ip address (currently 192.168.0.100), i remember having issues in the past with that, but I could be wrong. when I run iwconfig i get
I'm setting up a home network and trying to set up a Ubuntu Server (10.04) as a samba file server and a web server.I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Server and the automatic network configuration during installation failed. I've looked into host.conf, networks, interfaces, hosts and resolv.conf and either my settings are wrong or it's something else. I have a Win7 computer connected to same router and DSL modem and it works fine (edit: most of the time--- see below).

just finished installing Centos5 and I had no problems installing it. But when I tried to connect to the internet, the trouble began.My network card is installed and the status is "OK". The network card is a "Realtek RTL 8168C(P)/8111C(P)".The status of the device said "Inactive" and when I tried to activate it, it came with an error: Failed; no link present. Check Cable?Now the cable is connected as it should be.So next step I did is put in a static IP. Now the activation works fine.However I still have no internet. I can't even ping to my router!I need some new drivers for my graphics card too, but first I need the network to work, than I can download other stuff..
I'm running into a curious networking hiccup with my router setup. I have a D-Link DIR-628 wireless router connected to our modem, and a wire running from that to a Linksys WRT-54G (v1.1) in our basement. This setup worked great for a few days, but then suddenly the Linksys stopped routing us to the internet. I can connect to the router page on the Linksys and using the diagnostic tools I can ping the web from there, but none of the computers connected to it can. Everything is fine when connected to the D-Link.
After fiddling around with just about every setting on the Linksys I finally gave up and tried resetting it to factory defaults--and it worked! Everyone could access the internet again. But then, every day or two it locks up again and I have to reset factory defaults again.
i have Fedora 13 dual booting with Win XP and i cannot ping my router in Fedora. just reinstalled and i'm still unable to ping my router.everything looks like it was installed correctly except in the ifcfg-eth0 it has IPV4_FAILURE_FATAL=yes dont think this should have a value of yes.
I have a desktop computer (Ubuntu) connected to one of the LAN ports of the Cradlepoint MBR1000 router via an Ethernet cable. I also have a Verizon mobile broadband USB modem (USB760) plugged into the USB port of the Cradlepoint router.I also have a laptop (Ubuntu) with a wireless wi-fi adapter (802.11g). The laptop also has an Ethernet card but I'm not using it. The desktop computer does not have a wi-fi adapter, only the laptop does.
With the above setup, I have Internet access to both the desktop computer as well as the laptop computer, which I am well pleased with.Is there a way I can have file sharing between the desktop and the laptop, or at least ping between them, the way I have it set up? I can't use the ad-hoc method because for that to work each computer needs a wi-fi adapter. The router is using DHCP but can also be configured manually.
