Ubuntu Networking :: How To Make A DNS On WAN
Mar 16, 2010
My computer is located on WAN and it's considered as a normal user with static IP. I have made a website for my peers in the network and they always connect to it through my Ip address. However, My problem is that I'm not the owner of the WAN server and can't change anything on it . I really want to make it easy for them by memorising word not Ip number. Is there any way that I could make a DNS instead of using the IP. I have tried the command vi /etc/hosts and changed the content to convert my Ip to DNS something like [URL] but it only works on my computer not by everyone in the network.I have already installed apache2 on my computer an it runs a server for my website.I don't it to be a global website , I only need it to work the local network.

Im trying to make an ubuntu server box my entrypoint to my networking. Meaning itll function as a server, a firewall, and a gateway. so i already installed dhcp3 and a dns server.
I have 2 ethernet cards in it. So now i wonder, should i the second card into a router's modem/wan port and make the router a switch? or should i plug it into one of the routers lan ports?

I am trying to run Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit on an ASUS X53SV laptop. I configured the DSL connection (username and password), and it can't connect to it (the icon in the system tray keeps showing, that it is searching for the connection, and from time to time it flickers).I have tried it with ElementaryOS 64 bit and LinuxMint 64 bit (both based on Ubuntu), and either it is the same problem, or it doesn't even bother to look up the connection. I have also tried it with KiwiLinux (also based on Ubuntu, but there is only a 32 bit edition), and the network worked without problem (no sound though if jack plugged in - the same problem as with my old ASUS A3E laptop).
The network connection works fine under Windows 7.I have been careful when i introduced the username and password, so mistyping shouldn't be the problem. So what should i do, where should i look to try to get it to work?

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 to run a Minecraft Server. Now against better judgement and seeing that it is only for 7 people, I decided to use a wireless usb card to connect to the internet. Well, I was told that I was going to have to install ndiswrapper. I downloaded it on my Mac and used a USB drive to transfer it to my desktop. I then double clicked and extracted. I then did this in the terminal:
Code:
To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>". See "man sudo_root" for details.
[Code]...

My wireless card (an Atheros AR928x) was not performing very well. At the suggestion of a friend I tried to use NDISWrapper (using the ndisgtk GUI interface) to see if a Windows driver would work better. I found the XP drivers online, tried several versions and, after none worked, I decided that I might as well settle with the crappy quality of the Linux driver and let it go. Sadly, that may not be possible.
I removed the drivers (again via ndisgtk) and now the laptop can't use the card at all. It won't detect any networks (even when just five feet from the router) and I'm not sure what's causing this. I've tried rebooting and rebooting into an older kernel. I checked lspci and it still recognizes the card.
Any idea what's up and how I could fix it?

I have installed Xubuntu 10.4 (Lucid) on a PC at my uncle's. He is the happy owner of a Netgear wg121 wireless usb-adapter.
I have followed the instructions concerning installation of the ndiswrapper here:
[URL]
The wg is up and running and everything seems to work perfect... except that, when I reeboot and log in, I have to issue the following commands again, to make the network initialize the wep-encrypted connection. If I do not issue these commands, the wifi-part of the Xubuntu network manager (I don't know the exact name of the program) is invisible in the menu or anywhere on the desktop. (It just says no network where the wifi should be appended). But when I issue these commands in a terminal, then the adapter (wg121) opens and connects to the network:
sudo depmod -a
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
I have tried the command:
sudo ndiswrapper -m
in order to make Xubuntu connect automatically on opening, but no success. When i look through the log it says something about a .conf file, but not which and how, so I'm a bit lost.

I'm using Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04, on an Asus EeePC 904HA. Yesterday, I was connecting to my wireless network, which has WPA2 security, just fine. Then, I disconnected randomly (I'm used to random disconnects, as I'm a great distance away from my router.) Usually, I just reconnect. I tried and tried, and I still can't. I've restarted my computer, gotten right next to the router, turned networking off and back on, and so on. Still, no luck.
You know, when you're conecting to a wireless network, there's the icon with the two grey circles that turn green and the blue swirl? They both turn green, like usual, and then they just go back to the two computers with the red "X". You know what I'm talking about. All other computers on my network work fine, so it's just my Asus.

I have installed xubuntu 11.04 and cannot connect to my wireless router - The computer picks up all the local signals, so it's working from that end. When I do try to connect wirelessly it tries for a bit and then tells me I am disconnected. The password is correct and the wireless is WPA-Personal TKIP Encrypted.

I've installed ubuntu 9.10 using a minimal install and started from there installing the rest of the things I needed.
I'm running KDE4.4 and Wicd 1.6.1.
Problem is, wicd worked fine, but I don't know what happened before I got this annoying problem.
After logging into KDE, wicd asks me for my password in order to connect to the network-device. After filling that in, I get the message code...
As you can see in the logging, internet is working fine. I manually have to start wicd-client and I get an extra wicd-icon in the taskbar showing me the signal strength as it should do.
I've been searching a lot, but can't find anything about this, except a lot of people having the same errormessage, but they have some errors in the wicd.log too.

I have a Synology home server at home. I have a laptop with Linux Mint 8 (Helena) installed. I can access my server's shared files using LAN through Places>Network>Windows Network>Workgroup>Server>Shared files. I can also access the files through a web browser. Samba is installed. The problem is when I use the wireless lan of my laptop, I cannot access the server and the files anymore locally even through a web browser.
I tried Connect to Server through Windows Share but what I get is "Could not display "smb://server/".".
