Ubuntu Networking :: DNS Config Broken When Booting?
Jan 4, 2010
I have a jaunty installation which is working fine, and I'm gradually getting a dual boot of karmic (desktop amd64) up to speed to take over from it. I've got a fairly standard ADSL modem/switch/router connected by wires to the machine as eth0.I setup local static IP etc. during installation (no DHCP at all) and it worked fine for quite a while. Then, after an upgrade one day, DNS broke on reboot. After booting now, /etc/resolv.conf is essentially empty (just comments) but the networking service is up. I can ping places out on the web.If I "/etc/init.d/networking restart" then /etc/resolv.conf gets the correct "nameserver" and "search" lines added to it and everything is fine... until next boot.I never really worked out exactly how Ubuntu controls its networking config, and I'm further confused by the changes to the booting setup in Karmic

Why is the default config on Ubuntu 10.4 for LDAP so utterly, inconceivably, and irrecoverably broken? Has anyone managed to successfully enable replication using this messed up slapd.d config? I am pretty sure it is impossible. And the only documentation I could find on it was utterly incorrect.

My sound card (Soundblaster 24 live! USB) stopped working shortly after upgrading to 10.04. everything was fine until the upgrade as well a immediatly after, so I assume that an update was to blame. If I boot the PC off a live CD, all is well and the sound card works fine.
I've tried running
aplay -l
but it assured me that I do not have a sound card on the system to setup! how I find the broken config file or busted driver?

I have a GRUB backup pen drive thing, but when I boot from it, it wont accept any keys other than CTRL+ALT+DEL. The partitions can be mounted and are usable, but home is encrypted. I don't want to delete my files.

when booting I can only acces a broken GRUB and this is how I might have done it wrong. I installed Ubuntu the first time using dual-booting which I think is the worst way since it could be done better by using a Virtual Machine such as Parralels or VMware. Well later I noticed that after removing Ubuntu there was still 2 problems 1.when selecting a OS during startup When I select "Windows" it goes to a broken GRUB which displays something like this " Use tab to complete the first commands" GRUB><where you're suppose to type> and I can't type so I hard reboot it. 2. I could not get rid of LinuxSwap. Much later I removed LinuxSwap by booting in a Ubuntu live disk and then removing the partition as well as the Linux "/" and after booting to Mac OS X leopard disk0s1 the Mac OS X system partition was mounted which was bad since it was suppose to be invisible to even the root user unless viewed by terminal on any user.
Now later I reformatted it as "Mac OS X something extended" and at first it was unjointed and impossible to mount and after I reformatted it it appeared as disk0s3. Now the problem appeared. This is the stuff I can do1. I can type some commands in the GRUB but when I typed find / the output is something like can't find /2. I might be able to boot up a live disk however my Linux Ubuntu live disk is broken.3. this is my dad's second hand Mac G5 iSight, not mine and it was a bargain, it was cheaper than my iPad with Mac OS X Leopard 10.5#

I'm trying to boot Ubuntu from a LiveCD in a computer I recently bought that currently has Windows XP on it. The Ubuntu menu comes up when I boot but it always snags on an error "failed to restore CRTC configuration -22" or something like that, and just goes on ad infinitum.
I tried running Linux Mint too and had the same problem, which makes me think it's an issue with the computer itself - which is an Averatec, if that helps.

I receive these alerts when booting.
What do they means?
Why some daemons find for config on a non-existent file (/etc/modprobe.conf)?
Maybe because these daemons was disabled and reenabled?
Code:
Code:
And hostname command output is "localhost.localdomain".
Where I can find daemons' default setting list?

i am having some issues with dual booting my SL6.1 and Windows. The situation is that i recently acquired an old hard drive from a non-working computer of mine with Windows already installed (i know the windows is functional, as i tested it on my new PC with SL6.1 currently installed & everything runs fine)
The problem is that after editing the grub.config to include windows, windows will no longer boot after an attempt to install a legit version of McAffee anti-virus software which coincidently was only after the first attempt at running both OS's in a dual-boot fashion. Except past the windows start up screen before the dreaded blue-screen.
Which is weird because SL6.1 OS will still boot & works perfectly fine like always, so it doesn't really make sense.
My current setup is:
Disk 1: Solid-State:
Boot Partition
SL6 LVM1: Root Partition
Disk 2: Hard Drive:
SL6 LVM2: User, Temp & Swap Space Partitions (Different LVM to Root)
Disk 3: Hard Drive:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
My guess is its windows MBR. The reason i say this is because the Hard Drive contents of the Windows software still appears intact when accessing the drive from the Linux OS. I don't won't to go through the rigmarole of re-installing both OS's. So hopefully their is a relatively simple solution.

I have been trying to set up openVPN on a Virtual Machine running Ubuntu 10.04 with the eventual intention of having a closed VPN in the workspace I'm at, and a bridged internet connection out through the server. My initial process/instinct was to go through Webmin. After a fair bit of tooling around making eys/certificates, I was able to get a response (and that's all it was, really) from my windows machine accessing the VPN server. However, in my attempt to bridge the network, I have lost all internet/networking capabilities from the server.Fortunately I am able to access the server directly from the hardware underneath (i.e. I don't need to SSH in or anything), and so I've been attempting to restore the server's networking back to default. I have returned the /etc/network/interfaces file to it's original state (just the loop, and an eth0 on dhcp) and restarted the networking. A check with ifconfig returns what seems to be a working eth0, and the loop (noting else) however I am unable to ping any outside server. When I do, I am given the message:From XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable(where of course XXX is my IP address).nother VM on the server is able to access the internet just fine, so it's not the overall server hardware...I guess at this point I'm just trying to take steps back,

I'm running Ubuntu Server 11.04 with OpenSSH, trying to create an ssh tunnel (for web traffic) to it from my (also Ubuntu) laptop. This is the command I'm using to create the tunnel:
Code: ssh -ND localhost:8080 george@192.168.1.20 I had it all working on a virtual machine.. which was deleted What settings/lines do I need to change/add from the default OpenSSH config files to get tunnelling to work? I've Googled and AllowTcpForwarding is set to yes, as is X11Forwarding.. but it still doesn't work. Chrome can connect to the server, but says the connection was closed before any data was sent.

I am running a server with a GRSecurity patched Kernel 2.6.32.36. I've tried to optimize the kernel as much as I can and know it (removing options, not needed drivers and so on) and compiled the modules into the kernel (no loadable modules anymore). I've started with Slackware 13.0 and the default config for 2.6.29.6-huge. Still I am not sure what to remove/optimize further now.
My question: Is there a way to boot with a kernel with loadable modules, check which modules are really needed for this hardware, (do something like lsmod) and save the running configuration modules for a next kernel compile to be the default .config instead of writing them down by hand and search for the appropriate names in .config or during menuconfig? (Note: zcat /proc/config.gz > .config is NOT the way I want, as it gives me just the current kernel config)

My brother owns a chain of photo studios and we've just converted the computers over from Windows Vista to Ubuntu 10.10
We're setting up a wireless router at one of them right now and I can't log into the router via chrome or firefox by typing in 192.168.0.1
It just tells me there is no network connection. From what I remember I don't need internet to connect to the router to configure it.
On windows or osx it's generally a plug and play operation to getting the wireless all setup and secure.

I installed Ubuntu on one of my machines a few days ago. It was an oldish CD containing 9.10. Eveything was puppies and rainbows. However, today I updated that machine to 10.04, and it no longer sees my network. Specifically, Windows doesn't see shares on it, and it doesn't see shares on Windows. Further, when trying to make a share (or rather update the one I had previously) I get the following:
Quote...
Again, this is already the newest version.
And, being that I have no real idea what I'm doing, this is where my Googeling skills fail me. I want to reiterate, though, that before I updated today, networking was fine in both directions, i.e. from windows to ubuntu and from ubuntu to windows. How can I get networking to work again?

I had put in a broadcom 4318 (airforce) card and it showed up in network tools as wlan6 with multicast disabled, inactive, and etc. the bf cutter tool also showed up in hardware drivers.
However, after trying to get the card functional - it no longer shows up in network tools nor is bf cutter in the hardware section.
I tried installing broadcom's proprietary driver among some other solutions. I'm running karmic 9.10.
How to start with a clean slate and get my wlan6 to appear again, so I can install this proprietary driver or use driverloader?

I recently purchased a Netgear WG111v2 802.11g wireless usb adapter for use with an ARM embedded device (loaded with the ARM port of ubuntu). It uses the rtl8187 driver and, when attached to my laptop, connects perfectly through NetworkManager. Unfortunately, I am not working with any ui on my embedded device so I won't have that luxury and must connect via the terminal. Unfortunately, I'm not able to connect this way on either my laptop or the embedded device (they both CAN pick up surrounding AP's through iwlist scan though). I'm able to set the ssid through
Code: sudo iwlist wlan0 essid "woot" and my access point is temporarily open (no wep/wpa). When I bring the device up using
Code: sudo ifconfig wlan0 up the light on the adapter starts blinking but I'm still not able to connect. iwconfig wlan0 outputs:
