Ubuntu Networking :: Continue Networking When In Sleep Mode?
Nov 9, 2010
After seeing those 4G phone commercials with that newfangled mobile hotspot tech, I have to admit I was eager to trade in my crappy 2 year old CDMA phone for one. That is, until I saw the price tag. 30$ a month for hotspot? No way, so what I did was activate the tethering feature buried deep within the primitive OS accessible only with a plethora of codes and hackery. So long story short: I can now network on the go because Ubuntu sees my device as a "mobile broadband device". Unfortunately, my ipod lacks a USB port for tethering so I use my freed up wireless card to make an AD-HOC network for my ipod to connect through my makeshift modem. Now, my issue is that the modem isn't really that mobile any more because I have to have my laptop OPEN to keep my networks on ,otherwise I close my laptop and no more Adhoc or mobile broadband! So, my question is if I can close my laptop but still keep it connected to the mobile broadband and broadcasting the adhoc network.

Installed Fedora8 from an old DVD.
Two issues:
1. start Firefox, but it goes into sleep mode. no matter reboot machine, etc.
2. after entered a static IP address in network manager, fedora hanged in boot process, halted in "send email" which is one of many processes at boot up.
Used DHCP, can ping to other PC in LAN, but can't go internet.

running a large program on a remote SSH server the other day when I was disconnected. This is a large program, ~48 hours to complete, and I was disconnected around hour 40. I have restarted the program using the following (Note: I am already ssh'd into the server) ./20090427_9crossing > 20090427_9crossing.out & Now, I believe this will run the program in the background and output to the file. So, if I get disconnected again will it continue to run? If not, is there a way that I can get it to keep running?

I increase my knowledge in vim in two ways. Little hints about doing this or that and scattered studies using the vim help files. Please do not believe I always rely on the first one.

Asus u43f wont go into sleep/suspend mode. Either manually from the shut down menu or by closing the lid. the screen will turn off but the various lights do not turn of and hard drive continue to spin.
I found this suggested test with a google search but no fix
sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh
which returned:
cat: /var/lib/acpi-support/system-manufacturer: No such file or directory
cat: /var/lib/acpi-support/system-product-name: No such file or directory
cat: /var/lib/acpi-support/system-version: No such file or directory

I ordered this USB 802.11n dongle for about $10 and am having problems.I found a firmware related bug (Bug #595455) that keeps it from working out of the box and got around that. I put the right firmware file in the right place and CAN CONNECT TO B or G Access Points.hen I put my AP in N-Only mode, I can see the network, but cannot associate. With the AP in mixed mode I can Associate using G.The most interesting thing I found was something that had very
few google hits (like 4). In the dmesg output after associating I see the message:
Successfully associated, ht not enabled(0, 1)The most interesting thing about this is the (0, 1) at the end.I don't know what that means but it seems like a clue as to what the problem is.This device uses the realtek chipset 8191S, there are conflicting reports on this, but all the reported possibilities seem to use the same driver from realtek (rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.0006.2010 0625).Here is some random info:
Dmesg output:
[85082.620027] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
[85082.754586] usb 1-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

Since installing 10.04 yesterday my laptop will not wake correctly from sleep mode. Opening the lid wakes the machine up but the graphics are all wrong. Loads of tightly packed horizontal lines. Turning the machine off and restarting makes all ok. It's only on wake up does the problem happen. The laptop is an Acer 1652,with an ATI Mobile Radeon X300 graphics card. Intel Pentium M.

How can I disable the functionality that puts the computer to sleep when I press the sleep button on my keboard?
I keep hitting it accidentally and I don't even use a swap, so Ubuntu just stalls with a black screen.

I'm on the computer for 15 min, and then it randomly goes into a sleep mode, and I can't recover it (system lights are on, monitor on, mouse/keyboard fine). I've replaced pulseaudio with alsa, and whenever I go into the screensavers tab to disable sleep mode, the computer does its thing and randomly goes to sleep. This is REALLY frustrating because I leave the computer on for downloads, but when I come to check on them the computer has gone to sleep, and I et corrupted files on my HDD. How to disable sleep from terminal?

My screen has started going into sleep mode if the computer is idle for around ten minutes - sometimes longer, no discernable pattern. The setting is of course set to 'never' in System / Preferences / Power Management

I'm sure this doesn't need a new thread but after searching for a bit I didn't find much about this. The problem is this;My system sleeps quite well, I can resume from sleep and get back to the desktop. However. the one thing that doesn't resume is > networking.I can disable> re-enable networking from the NM-applet and it tries again to connect but won't.I can sudo /etc/init.d/ networking restart, which essentially is the same as above. No connectionI've run ifconfig, and the connection is there but no address. Has this bug not been solved? Is it just a driver issue with my particular network card? It's the realtek 8201, part of the VT8237 chipset.Does anyone know what to do about this? I've been avoiding sleep mode on this computer for a very long time because of this bug.

If I put my computer into sleep or hibernate, I have no wireless connection when I start up again. I click on the wireless manager in the tray, but wireless is disabled and I can't enable it. This never happened until I updated to Ubuntu 9.10.
I am using the b43 driver (I think), but I'm not sure which command to execute to display information about my wireless card.

When my akoya mini E1210 with UNR10.10 resumes after sleep my wifi searches forever and then cuts out. When I do iwconfig the card seems normal for about a minute and then I do iwconfig again it gives gives no id. Reboot and bang, everything perfect. Did make new driver from latest ralink driver, as explained by Sven ,but nu change. Also blacklisted the rt2800 and rt2x00.
Seems that after sleep the wifi card driver is not loaded. Worked like a charm in 9.10 and in 10.4 (upgrade from 9.10). After update to 10.10, it went wrong.
extra: when I do sudo ifconfig ra0 up I get the message "SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not permitted" Also, after hibernation, no luck...
in dmesg found that the mailbox keeps MCU active, and rt2860 could not be initialised.:
Quote:
maarten-laptop kernel: [ 1902.168454] ERROR!!! NICInitializeAdapter failed, Status[=0x00000001]
maarten-laptop kernel: [ 1902.168788] ERROR!!! H2M_MAILBOX still hold by MCU. command fail
maarten-laptop kernel: [ 1902.174003] !!! rt28xx Initialized fail !!!
When Evolution Mail is not used, everything is ok. I know this message is not related to mail, but it helps for a while. After longer period of sleep, same problem again. Firmware problem?

I use ubuntu netbook for an eee pc 1000h because windows is underpowered. I got it working perfectly in 10.04. I upgraded to 10.10 thinking, if they got it right with 10.04 then surely 10.10 should be fine. All function keys except wireless work.
1. After sleep, wireless turns off. Have to restart and re-enable in bios.
2. If I disable and the re-enable wireless networking it tries to connect but never does resulting in a reboot needed. Checking bios wireless is enabled and connects perfectly on reboot.
Just don't close the lid and sleep because you need a restart. Why would 10.04 be easy and the new version fail? I am windows user and linux does not do this kind of thing normally. MS screws things up with upgrades not linux surely.

Gnome would sleep after specified 10 min and put this machine into <1 Wt saving mode.KDE just invokes screensaver and turns off display. It won't even spin down HDDs.There are no profiles in KDE power settings and I can't create any - create button works, but 'new profile' dialogue does not actually create any profiles. This is a brand new default install of F14 on AMD 890 chipset.

Installed openSUSE into my Thinkpad T410 and noticed that when I closed the laptop lid, the moon icon does not light up.
Reopening the lid and will see a screensaver password screen immediately.
Does this means that the laptop does not have Sleep (or is it called hibernate) mode enable? How can I enable it?
This also happens with Debian that this laptop is dual booted with.

Linux downloaded new updates and worked perfectly. Next time I started mint, just before the login screen appears display says No Signal and goes in sleep mode. I think that mint downloaded somekind of display driver update wich is not compatible with my driver card. I can't see desktop, I just hear the login sound and that's all. What should I do? I'm new with linux.

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 on an IBM ThinkPad t43. I have a 9 volt battery that I use only occasionally. Usually I use the AC connection and when I'm finished working I leave the laptop in "sleep" mode. (Not always, but often.) When using the AC is it okay to leave the battery in the computer or is it better to remove it? Some swear it shortens the battery's life to leave it installed when not in use. Others swear--with equal fervor--that the newer ion batteries know when they are fully charged and don't have to be removed. Which is true? It's inconvenient to keep taking the battery in and out, but if it's necessary to prolong it's life I guess it's worth it. Some clarity good because, as I said, you can find equally impassioned arguments for both sides of this issue.

after totem is done playing a movie from my external harddrive ( usb 2.0 750 gb Western Digital HDD) the computer screen will go blank but the computer will not suspend or hibernate. I have gnome-power-manager to go to suspend after 30 min of inactivity. I will usually fall asleep during the movie and the laptop will remain on. I will wake up to find the laptop on for the whole night and that it didn't go to sleep or suspend power after the movie stopped. Note ** I have already tried reinstalling gnome-power-manager & totem ... Also have turned on and off Dbus plugin, and totem is not set to always on top.
