Ubuntu :: Configuring Internet From Command Line

Feb 23, 2010

I just installed a command line version of karmic to an old desktop. During installation, DHCP failed, so I attempted to configure manually (without really knowing what I'm doing) and wound up without a connection. I've been searching for solutions, but really don't understand what I need to do. A million thanks to anyone who can help me get up and running (or at least give me a push in the right direction).I can either connect the computer directly to the cable modem via USB, or directly to my wireless router via ethernet cable. I know what the ip address for my laptop (which is connected wirelessly to the router) but don't know if that would be the same for the desktop or not, and don't really know anything else.

General :: Internet Not Working In RHEL 5 Even After Configuring?

Apr 5, 2011

I installed RHEL 5 today and set my network. Did it as follows:Eth0 connectionPrimary DNS 192.168.1.1When I click on Activate, it says:8139too device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization. This message shows no matter how many times I log out or restart.I don't know what the heck is the problem. I've done the essentials but still it's not working. I looked up on the net but people were saying things like ifconfig and lspci, and at the end still weren't able to solve it. I don't know all this since I'm new to Linux. Another important thing...after facing this same problem some time ago, I installed Centos which asked for internet settings right at the time of installation. And after logging in for the first time, I was able to use internet without any problem. How come internet works on Centos (which is a copy of RHEL) without any problems, but not working on RHEL itself?

Networking :: Configuring 2 NIC's On Ubuntu Desktop 10.04

Apr 20, 2011

I have 2 pc's at home, neither v flashy but both more than capable of running this. Previously I had them both running XP SP2. One pc has 2 NICs in it and the second only one. So, PC1 (now running Ubuntu desktop 10.04) has the 2 NICs installed ...

1) A realtek NIC which is on 'eth1' and from which I receive internet connectivity from the router of this shared house. (2 other people connect their PCs to the internet via this router.)

2) A 3com NIC on 'eth0' which I have connected (using a crossover cable) to the Intel 'PRO100 VM' NIC on PC2.

Admittedly this took me some time to get half working. Currently I can connect to the internet through 'eth1' OR to PC2 via 'eth0' BUT NOT AT THE SAME TIME. However, If I disconnect one (by left clicking on 'disconnect' under the top of screen menu bar, then the other one will immediately work ... and visa versa.

I had this working when both PC's were running windows XP but now in trying to educate myself further I have installed Ubuntu on PC1 and am attempting the same thing. I refuse to accept that as alot of these thread responses state, that it 'can't be done'. Quite clearly it can be done since the physical connections and hardware are no different, its just about ensuring that the protocols are all correct and that I haven't done something stupid.

I am very keen to learn more about computer networks and equally keen to educate myself in the ways of Linux, in fact I am studying to gain a network qualification as we speak but at this stage its still a little confusing. I have learned an awful lot about the fundamentals of networking but the 'hands on stuff' is where I really need to test myself.

Ubuntu Networking :: Configuring Samba To Access A NAS?

Mar 4, 2010

I'm having problems in accessing a storage device (NAS 200 Linksys) in a network via Ubuntu. I think the problem is with the configuration of Samba.

On my computer the login and password are the same in Ubuntu (9.04), samba and Win XP.

Under windows I view the device in the network and, when I click on its icon, a window opens with the directories that have access.

Under Ubuntu, I can see all the computers in my workgroup and the device. However when I click on its icon only a blank window is opened.

I share printers without problems.

In my settings for the samba security = user.

Does anyone know if there is any configuration that allows access to the NAS?

Ubuntu Networking :: Configuring IPv4 With Fixed Ip?

Aug 2, 2010

Our router is pretty old and only capable of giving fixed ip and there is no support for IPv6. Via the gnome networkmanager I try to set a manual IP to 192.168.1.123 and a netmask to 255.255.255.0 and a default gw at 192.168.1.1 . However, this does not work.

If I open a terminal and type:

Code:
sudo ifconfig eth0 inet 192.168.1.123
sudo route add default gw 192.168.1.1
Then I get a perfectly valid connection to the internet.
ifconfig by it self returns:

[Code]....

ffor me it seems that the gnome network manager doesn't save the information that I gently ask it to.

I can fix it with the CLI commands, but I would like to know whats going on.

Networking :: Configuring Wired Network Ubuntu 10.04?

Feb 16, 2011

"Need help with entries for connecting to broadband. Was OK with ubuntu 8.04 which had boxes for DNS server, etc. The 10.04 asks for MAC address (?) and there is a space for "DHCP client ID". I don't understand these terms. I will appreciate some step-by-step instruction or example of how I may proceed, especially exact syntax for any command line work. I am in Chennai/Madras, and have a BSNL wired broadband connection to my Dell laptop." I have repeated what I tried in the ubuntu forum without success. I'm really in newbie category, and not comfortable with computer or internet jargon. I can still connect with ubuntu 8.04 and firefox, just once daily. In a later post I also added: In Ubuntu 8.04 there was a system> admin> network tab (missing in 10.04). In the connections tab "wired" was checked. The general tab had my computer name (tsq-laptop) for host, and a blank box for domain name. The DNS tab had 192.168.1.1 in the servers box (presumably my service provider BSNL), and nothing in search domains. The hosts tab had a list of IP addresses and aliases, the first few being:

127.0.0.1 - local host
127.0.1.1 - tsq-laptop
::1 - ip6 local host ip6 loopback
fe00:: - ip6 localnet, .... (and a few more such I think most (or all) of these entries were generated automatically by the system, since I don't understand the jargon at all! I don't recall having any difficulties then, some two years back. Before that I had major problems in using the internal modem for a dial-up connection, but got detailed help by e-mail/internet from some really knowledgeable people in Europe and elsewhere regarding linmodem configuration, which I followed blindly and it worked!
In 10.04 there is only the taskbar icon to edit settings, and it has a different structure. It asks for MAC address (example 00.11.22.33.44.55). Other info required is IPv4 settings, DHCP client ID, about routers and other stuff. There may be other system settings to be made, which I can try with proper guidance. The ubuntu help page gives very sketchy information, and the images are not clear at all. No response to that till second day. Subsequently: In the 'wired' tab the 'routes' button popped a table where I entered address as 127.0.0.1, and netmask as 255.0.0.0, leaving gateway and metric blank. This is all geek stuff for me - I'm an old-fashioned engineer from the slide-rule era!

Should all this have been in the newbie forum? Thanks, =TeeSquare=

Networking :: Configuring With Two HW Interfaces?

Oct 16, 2010

I have two interfaces, gprs0 and gprs1, both connected to the Internet from the same HW device, but through two different access points I just read another blog entry with a guy who had two network cards, using one as a back up - I guess this is a little similar, but should be much easier I am guessing - I am just lost Using ifconfig (IP address given by the network) and route to setup the connection,

ifconfig gprs0 10.20.30.40 up
route add default dev gprs0
ping 66.102.7.99 works fine
afterwards

[code]....

There is data being transmitted and received to device again, I guess the kernel just doesn't know where the incoming data should go without the correct routing tables? Or what exactly is going on?The question I have is how do I configure the device to do the correct routing, using only the ifconfig and route commands? Maybe too trivial for you guys, but I am getting tired of goofing around not knowing what is up and down anymore
