Networking :: Linksys Router Settings For DSL
May 14, 2009
I set up my linksys router for PPPoE and username, however, if the compter goes idle after a while, I have to go back into the configuration page, save settings and everything is ok. I would like to keep the connection alive 24/7. There are two settings:
time to live (max idle time)
redial
Max idle time is now set at 10 minutes. The redial is grayed out. Are these the settings I should be concerned about?

I have been using the B version for many years, just got the G version for a B-day gift. I run OpenSuSE 11.3 and XP on one computer but I have several (3) wireless laptops in my house plus a xbox wireless. I also have 2 other ethernet computers connected to the B version. Can someone provide me with some links/info on how-to. When I did a Google search all I came up with is firmware upgrade...which I've done for the B version. Is it as easy as taking out the old...configuring the new?

I am dual booting XP and Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6410 and I have a Linksys WRT120N router connected to my Modem.
So the weird thing is, under XP I can use the internet while connected to my router. Under Ubuntu I can't use the internet while connected to my router. But I can use the internet in Ubuntu if I connect to my neighbor's router called "linksys". So something happens when I connect to my router that makes Ubuntu not able to access the internet. But if I'm connected to my Neighbors router or if I use XP while connected to my router I can use the internet.
I have been using Ubuntu for about a year, so I'm getting better but still a noob. I've tried to figure out what's going on by looking at other forums and posts and trying to see if anyone has solved this. So far I've had no luck. This is also the first of many problem I have encountered that I have been unable to solve using online posts, and is the first problem that I have had to resorted to creating a post to try and fix.

I am running Fedora 13 and I have a linksys WRT54G wireless router [1,2]. I'm having a strange problem. I'm using a computer connected to the router via a wired connection. At intermittent moments the connection seems to stop. I can't even ping the router (192.168.1.1). However, if I make NetworkManager reconnect to eth0 the connection immediately comes back and I can ping the router and navigate to websites. If I wait a random amount of time the connection also seems to comes back on its own (without reconnecting via NetworkManager). Any idea if this is a hardware (router) problem or a software problem? This didn't happen a month ago.
P.S: I have already updated to the latest firmware (Ver.8.00.8).[URL]..

Okay, a few days ago I got a small job setting up a router for a neighbour of mine. He wanted me to set up a wireless network for him. The router he bought is a Linksys Wireless N-Router E1000. I set it up the passwords and everything. Only to find out that I couldn't connect at all to it. The main computer with a direct ethernet connection to the router was the only one that had internet. Everytime I attempt to connect wirelessly with any device, it will take extremely long time to connect, to the point where I will just quit connecting.(Example: 15 minutes of waiting, when the laptop is right next to the router)
Any ideas about what I am doing wrong here? As far as I can think of it might just be a faulty router, because the router will not implement any changes(like setting a password) I set on it. Only wired connections seem to work. the router is called a linksys wirless N-router E1000.

I have a linksys router in my basement and physical access is pretty much blocked by a stuck trap-door. I could try to shut off the main power switch, but I like to see that as a last resort. The problem I have is that I have an open (no encryption) wifi connection between my pc and linksys router, yet I cannot connect to it. Until a couple of days ago I could connect to it with my android handheld device, my linux laptop, and my windows desktop. All these devices are now unable to connect. I attached the wicd log from my linux laptop. How to gain access to my router again?

After I installed a gigabit router, I could not access my nfs server anymore; I tried with the previous physical set-up and all was OK so clearly it is the new router that is the disturbing factor. After some (and then some) experimenting, it would appear that the following specific feature needs to be enabled: Filter Internet NAT Redirection This feature uses port forwarding to block access to local servers from local networked computers. Select this feature to filter Internet NAT redirection. It is not selected by default.
The reason I had simply looked over it is that I did not see how internet nat redirection could be related to the local network. As I read the details, it became clear that it really is but it also raised new questions. Have I now allowed just anyone on the internet to access to my nfs server? Because the description is not very clear either as it mentions both internet and local network. And what is that odd terminology? Filtering allows access, not filtering does not - that seems like the world upside down ...

I moved my server and network equipment, and now the wireless works but I cannot get my server online. I host a website, so this is kind of urgent.
I have a wireless router and can access the internet fine on my laptop. My server is wired & connected to the router. It sets up the networking properly.. ifconfig has an ip address, the default gateway is present. But I cannot ping google, or even the router. It says destination host unreachable.
So I go back to the laptop to check the router settings.. sometimes it likes to assign the server the wrong internal ip. But, I can't access the router settings either! The page (192.168.1.1) times out. Same with trying to ping the router. How can the laptop be online if it can't reach the router?
Oddly, ifconfig on my laptop reports an ip address starting with 99.233. It's always given me an internal address starting with 192.168. What's going on here? Is the router not allocating an internal ip? I use wicd to connect, if it's relevant.
We have a windows laptop that can only get a "local connection". Now it does sound like the router is forwarding directly to my laptop, instead of allocating internal ips.

Using a D-Link wireless router, trying to get it through the authentication process with the client through a D-Link DWA-125 USB wireless. When I set encryption to "none" on both ends, the router links up OK, but when I enter matching encryption settings on the router, and then in the driver data file (RT2870STA.dat) on the client side, I can't get it to authenticate. I've tried all possible combinations in the .dat file with no luck. I'm fairly well convinced that there is a bug in the .dat file settings, and that the wireless port setting need to be forced at startup through the /etc/networking/interfces file, or some such procedure, to override the settings in the .dat file.

what I have: Belkin G Wireless Router Model F5D7234-4. To attempt to get Subsonic working, I changed the port forwarding settings (Belkin calls it Virtual Servers) to forward port 4040 to my desktop computer. I then saved changes, and my wireless disconnected. I waited about 3 minutes, and nothing was happening, so I restarted my router. This left me in the position that I am in now. Even when the router and modem are fully booted, the router does not broadcast my SSID. In addition, a wired connection will not connect to the network through the router. This leaves me completely unable to use wireless, and unable to change any settings in the router.

Server details:
OS: Linux RedHat
DHCP: Static IP set to 192.168.1.101
sshd_config: Enabled for port 22 for ssh
Connected through wire to the Linksys router
Router:
Type: Linksys BEFW11S4
Port forwarding enabled for port 22 to IP 192.168.1.101
Client:
Windows 7
Interface: PuTTy
Host: 192.168.1.101 on port 22 through SSH
This always gives an error "connection timed out". SSH directly on the local Linux works fine.. Seems basic but had been struggling over this for past 3 hours to no avail so thought of posting it to the experts.

On this Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS server, I want to log the messages from a Linksys router. So I made this change to "/etc/init.d/sysklogd" SYSLOGD="-r" Then in "/etc/syslog.conf" I added the following to the top of the file: Code: if $fromhost isequal 'Linksys' then /var/log/Linksys.log & ~
Then I rebooted the server. But there is no "/var/log/Linksys.log" file.

I have been happily running the (always latest) version of PolarCloud's Tomato software on my LinkSys WRT54G for about 2 years now. I am looking for a way to setup a Proxy Server on my Tomato-based router to use from a remote machine somewhere in the web cloud. The reason for wanting to set this up follows. I normally run Squid on a Ubuntu 8.04 box, which I use while I am away from my LAN at home to browse the net (I like to keep things between me and my ISP, as much as possible . I rely on my proxy server on a daily basis. The way it works is I SSH into my Ubuntu box, and forward squid ports. I then point my browser to the proxy on my box. For various reason, however, I would like to set it up so that I can also do this via my router. So, I would like to be able to ssh to my router (I can already do this), forward the proxy ports, and surf the nets happily via my router at home. I am happy to use existing solutions (if possible), such as privoxy or squid, and am also open to setting up a custom-based solution, as may be necessary.

story is my brother is a dindows lover (gamer) and hes been gettin attacked by virus's,etc cause he runs his Vista setup with no firewall or antivirus
He says the firewall, etc slows down the PC too much for gaming He doesnt want to use Linux as his games wont play on Linux as on dindows
He wants to know if you can install a Linux firewall/gateway or whatever into his Linksys WRT54GC router and thus protect his PC without using a firewall or av in it.
EDIT: precisely; he has a Linksys wireless-G connected to a always-on Verizon Westel 6100G modem so its a wired connection, not wireless
