Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Get An Atheros AR8151 LAN Card To Work?
Nov 17, 2010
I have used Ubuntu without trouble for quite some time now on my computer (maybe 2 years; recently upgraded to 10.04) and have just bought a new computer for the office. When I install 10.04 on the new computer it doesn't seem to recognise the lan card, an atheros AR8151 onboard card (on a GA-G41MT-S2 mobo).
p.s. phrases such as 'build-essentials', 'sudo' and '.tar.gz' files don't mean anything to me (except the last is a bit like a zip file I think).

I installed Debian awhile ago, but then replaced the mobo. Now my system doesn't detect the onboard LAN card, installing the windows driver fixed that problem on windows but I can't seem to find the appropriate driver for Linux.
The card is an Atheros 8151.
The problem is that my install of linux (64bit) does not recognize any adapter on the system. I went and downloaded a driver, after a make, make install, and reboot it still wasn't fixed.
I can find on this recommends downloading from some partner.atheros.com which seems defunct.

I've installed it no problems on my desktop and I really love it. Now I'm trying to install it on my Satellite and I'm having a couple of problems. When trying to connect to my wireless network, I can see my network, but it will just keep asking me for my WEP. I've confirmed that there is nothing wrong with the network or the password I've provided. Sometimes when I boot up, the network manager just says that the wireless networks are disconnected and can't find any. The wired connection always works just fine.
Here are the system specs:
Toshiba Satellite M45 S169
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx LTS Fresh Install
Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC (rev 01)
Kernel driver in use: ath5k

I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. Although it has worked fine for the past couple of weeks, I have recently encountered a problem with my wireless card. It is an Atheros AR928X card on a Toshiba satellite U405D-S2874 model laptop. Recently, I attempted to put the computer into suspend mode for the first time. The computer failed to wake up, and I performed a hard reboot. After this, everything seems to work except for the wireless card. I am now unable to connect to any wireless network with my laptop, and the wireless manager doesn't seem to be working either.

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.04, and today the wireless connection has started to become spotty. The networks menu shows no wireless entries when they were there the day before. Again I have the Atheros AR5001 wireless card, my network is WPA2 and is 802.11g

I am not exactly sure whats wrong here, but Ubuntu 11.04 reports that the Atheros card for my laptop ( AR9287) is disabled. When I try to turn it on using fn+F3 it does not do anything. I looked around and found out about RF-Kill, tried doing the sudo rfkill unblock 0 and it did not work, I attempted that with both 1 and 0 as I also have a gigabit lan card. Though I could see the block status of the eth0 card changing, the Soft block of the wireless card did not.
I have also tried unblocking the pci_ath card in modprobe.d and that also did not work after restarting.
I am using a Acer Aspire 7551g with a Atheros wireless controller. Running Ubuntu 11.04 x64 AMD

I want to load Atheros wireless card to ubuntu linux OS having kernel 2.6.32.21. I have loaded the atheros driver and I observed the following log messages when card was inserted.
[ 55.732223] pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: pccard: CardBus card inserted into slot 0
[ 55.732294] pci 0000:04:00.0: reg 10 32bit mmio: [0x000000-0x00ffff]
[ 55.810152] ath5k: disagrees about version of symbol ieee80211_free_hw
[code]....
My suspect was the driver was 2.6.35.1 kernel based i may need to update my kernel, but i have other laptop having 2.6.32-21 kernel and this card works fine.

This morning I installed Fedora 14 on my laptop. During the setup, I was able to configure the wireless connection and use it to install additional software from the FreshRPMs and Livna repos. When the install was completed, I was surprised to find the wireless not working. When I click on the NetworkManager icon at the bottom right corner, I see "Wireless Networks" Under that it says "device not ready" and it is greyed out so it cannot be click on.
Running lspci -vnn returned

installing my wireless card Atheros AR9285.I have tried to get it working with both compat wireless - Ath9k driver but I dont know exactly how to do.I have also tried to get it to work with ndiswrapper, but it is really tricky because nothing is available in centos like precompiled ndiswrapper.I used to work with Arch Linux so everything in Centos is totally new to me and I dont understand a thing:I need to get it to work as soon as possible. What I have read the should go to just "activate" the ath9k driver with my card and it would work,

I'm trying to find a driver for my wireless card (Atheros AR928X) and I think it's ath9k what I need. As far as I know there isn't a linux driver for it, so I installed ndiswrapper to use a windows driver instead. The problem is that when I type modprobe ndiswrapper I get "bash: modprobe: command not found" (even as root). I know I'm missing something about modprobe, but I can't find any help on google. Anyway, I installed ndisgtk next, because I thought it would be easier, but when I go to System> Administration> Windows Wireless Drivers I get a message "Unknown error".Do you have any ideas on how I'll make ndiswrapper work?

Ok, so I upgraded my acer aspire one to the new Ubuntu 10, and at first everything was working fine, except the audio. Now, for some reason, my wireless and ethernet ports have died. I can't get online by either method. I can do ifconfig <device> up and it will show up if i do iwconfig or ifconfig, but the wireless isn't associated with the AP. Currently I'm trying to load some drivers for my atheros card, and we'll see how that works outReally I was wondering, how come the modules don't load at boot time, and how can I fix this? I've been a Linux user for quite sometime, however I've been more of end user

I've got a little netbook, and all works fine, except for one small thing. I'm able to connect to a wireless network with my Atheros AR5001 just fine. However, if I right click on the network icon, and disable network or wireless and enable it again, wireless won't work anymore. I can't see and connect to any network at all. Except when using airodump-ng from the famous aircrack-ng tool set. When using airodump I'm able to see any network and their specs just fine. I don't even have to be in monitor mode to do airodump-ng (the wireless must be off in the network manager though). Is there any way of getting my wireless back when I turn it on again?

i'm running Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit on an Acer Aspire 3050 laptop with an Atheros AR5BMB5 WiFi card.
The problem i'm having is that the hardware switch to turn the WiFi on and off isn't working right. When I hit the switch to turn it off, the light doesn't turn off, and Ubuntu just disconnects from the network and searches for more WiFi networks - it doesn't say that the WiFi has been deactivated, and I don't think it is. When I hit the switch again, it finds my network and connects to it.
The lspci -v | less command gives me the following information for the WiFi:
Code:
08:04.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC (rev 01)
Subsystem: AMBIT Microsystem Corp. Device 0418
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 168, IRQ 21
[Code]....
It lists a different model of card, but it's using what I assume is the correct driver, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I've checked the card itself and it is a AR5BMB5.
I would like to fix it so the switch actually turns the WiFi off instead of just making it search for more networks (I assume it's not actually turning off), and perhaps make the light turn off as it should as well.

F13 on a EEEPC 1000HD.I have big problems with my wireless card. lspci says:
Code:
01.00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
I can't use Network Manager (it continue to ask me for the WPA password9. So I stopped it and I use command line, following this: [URL]
From the log I can see that it tried to associate to AP and after a lot of tries: it connects BUT the connection is really SLOW and UNSTABLE! (pinging hosts on the same network gives me about 50% packets loss) I am worried about this entry in the log:
Code:
ath5k phy0: unsupported jumbo
I am going to try to install madwifi, but before that I'd like to have your opinion and listen your experience! I see a lot on infos about ath5k, but I'd like to be pointed to the right direction!

I'm trying to find out what is the difference between wifi0 and ath0 (atheros wifi card) in terms of packet counters shown in proc/net/dev pseudofile. The fact is that wifi0 and ath0 packet counters are different. I've read that wifi0 refers to the physical device and ath0 refers to virtual device over wifi0, so, as far as I know, packets counters in both devices should be the same, isn't it? Another annoying question for me is that ath0 doesn't show any erroneous packets, while wifi0 does.

I've got a Toshiba Satellite L25-S199, and it includes an Atheros wireless NIC based on the AR2413 chipset, I believe. Currently I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4 on it, but I've previously had Xubuntu and Ubuntu, and this problem has always existed with WPA2.
Specifically, the LAN is a wireless WPA2 with AES encryption (no TKIP). The computer can connect to the network just fine, but the web is all but unusable; it is very finicky, mostly failing to fetch any pages, but sometimes succeeding (mostly with Google pages, and those from the local network's servers). Perhaps a DNS issue?
This problem doesn't occur with WEP or no encryption.
Here's the output of lspci

And the relevant output of hwinfo

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and when I open up my network settings, It shows my ethernet card and my modem but my wireless card doesn't show up. Under "Hardware Drivers" it says that my driver for my wireless card is a "proprietary driver" and that there is no driver I can get for it for Linux. Is there any way that I can get my wireless card to work? I tried going to the HP website and downloading a driver for it, but all of the drivers only work for Windows....

A wifi card with the ath5k driver used to work properly until a couple of weeks ago. Now, if I ping the router the response times sometimes are okay but often fluctuate into the range of many hundreds or thousands of milliseconds. Occasionally the connection breaks down entirely. My laptop, which uses a different card, works fine (typical ping response times of 2 ms), so its probably not the router which is faulty.I use opensuse 11.3 x86_64, currently with the 2.6.34.7-0.7 desktop kernel and knetworkmanager

I like to test my network often. Until recently, I've been doing so on my old Ubuntu 6.06 laptop... the problem is It's too slow (1.06 GHz single Core ), and old, (designed for Win 2000) to really be effective any more. So, recently I bought a new laptop...one with a Dual core Processor, and twice the speed. Anyway, I'm running Fedora Core 10 X86_64 on it. My problem is as follows:
Although I do have MadWifi installed, for some reason, I still can't put my Atheros based Netgear WPN511 into monitor mode. (in the Network configuration window, it says "Atheros Communications Inc. Atheros AR5001X+" I'm not sure what it means but I'll put it in in case it helps) does MadWifi not work with Fedora? if not, is there a Fedora 10 (X86_64) alternative?
