Ubuntu Networking :: Maverick Networking Split Personality?
Nov 28, 2010
So, I use Ubuntu 10.10 on an old Dell laptop as the router for the house. It shares its Vodacom 3G with the rest of us, via the network port of the laptop. This works fine. We can all surf to our hearts' content.I can also VNC into the desktop of the router machine if I ever need to accomplish X, Y or Z on it, which is handy. However, I cannot for the life of me SSH in, or connect to the MySQL server that also lives on that machine. This is a pain. What I want to do is set up a database on a remote server, and then tunnel in via SSH. I'm trying to test that configuration using local machines on my network. My desktop machine happens to be XP, and I'm using Putty to try to initiate the SSH connection, but I keep getting a message saying NETWORK ERROR: CONNECTION REFUSED.

For reasons best known to itself, the Ubuntu 10.10 installation programme created two drives when it put my favourite OS back on the existing partition (which had become inaccessible). One is 20GB, the other 12GB. The former appears to contain the programmes that run the current distro (boot, root, etc. and so on). The latter has all my personal stuff (text files, pics, music etc.) I don't much care about this dichotomy, it works after all. But there is a part of me that says that this is all a bit untidy, that the right thing to do would be to merge the contents into one. The rest of me says, "don't rock the boat." Is it possible to merge them? Should I do it? How might I do it?

In windows if I want to do split tunneling, I just uncheck the Use as Default Gateway Box as seen here URL...In Ubuntu, I went to my VPN connection, IPv4 settings, routes..., checked "Use this connection only for resources on its network".And I could no longer ssh into machines on campus.

I could not find a solution to this problem anywhere. I use a ubuntu server to play (stream) mp3s and movies to other computers on my network. It works most of the time, but sometimes in the middle of a movie or a song it will drop/hiccup--saying it is "not reachable". I am not overtasking the server at all, and merely playing an mp3 that takes up less than 10% of the bandwidth, yet it drops it for a split second.
I have a WRT160N router (DD-WRT of course) with 4 clients connected (2 of which are wired). The ubuntu server is connected via ethernet and all machines have the same issue. It can't be the router because another Windows machine works just fine for streaming these files. I just can't understand how it can lose connection for a second or so. It may just be the file-system or some service that is hiccuping, but I have no idea...

Is it possible to split a NIC into two lets say.I've seen how in virtual box you set an option (I don't remember which one) that the guest OS uses the same NIC (virtualized?) and gets an IP assigned from the router. For example the host connects to the router using wlan0 and recieves IP 192.168.1.2 then the guest uses the same NIC wlan0 (i think correct me if I'm wrong thats why I ask) and gets 192.168.1.3
My question is: Is it possible to split lets say wlan0 in two in the same OS to get different IP address?and if it is. Can you connect to two different SSID with the same NIC using wpa_supplicant?

I want to do a video streaming to a remote PC across the internet. The video bitrate is around 600 kbps. But my internet connection supports only a maximum upload bandwidth of 400 kbps.So I thought I will get one more connection and use the combined upload b/w of 800 kbps to stream the video. I hope there should be a way to split the stream across two interface and merge them together at the remote endpoint. All this has to be done at real time.

I've used linuxquestions.org from time to time, but never needed to register until now.An in-depth explanation of this issue is already described over here: [URL], so I will merely quote it again here - it seems nobody knows the solution over at Ubuntu's forums...:
Quote: I recently switched my home server from debian lenny to ubuntu maverick. I've managed to port all my configs and stuff and so far I'm very happy. There's one tiny thing that's griping me, that I never experienced before with debian's (older) packages/configuration... Here's the situation: My server dials up 2 pppoe (adsl) interfaces (different isp's) with split internet routes.
If I run a general traceroute to an internet IP, all the hops which are not routed via the same interface as the destination host/IP, will appear as "* * *" in the traceroute. This was never the case before and it would be preferred to see the IP's of all routers along the way regardless of whether they are routed... (I used to be able to see IP's like 10.0.0.x before through INTERNET traceroutes if they were hops along the way [IP's which would be unreachable if traced directly], and that's no longer the case) - isn't this kinda defeating the point of traceroute?

I just installed Maverick on my netbook (Lenovo S10-2) and am having network issues. I had to plug in to the ethernet port before installing to get extra packages and updates. I was going to get the Broadcom STA wireless driver after it was complete. Installing the OS worked fine and it downloaded everything it needed to. But when I restarted, it didn't recognize when I plugged in the ethernet cable, making getting the wireless driver impossible. I reinstalling twice. Same story.
I tried different cables and none of them worked. Also, I tried to compile the wireless driver myself so I could put it on without having internet.

I recently upgraded from Lucid to Maverick, and I noticed that a new error message caused by a "cp" command call, including the hard links option. Fortunately, I kept the last Lucid kernel (2.6.32-25), so I could check the different behavior with booting successively on each kernel. Here are my configuration files:
On the server (192.168.1.2):
/etc/fstab :
UUID=... /mnt/Backup ext4 defaults,errors=remount-ro,relatime,async 0 2
/etc/exports :
[code]....
If I check permissions of /net/Backup/Folder2 from the client, I get :
owner = nobody (Create and Delete files), users (Access files), others (Access files)
cp -alR /net/Backup/Folder1/* /net/Backup/Folder2
- under kernel 2.6.32-25: no problem
- under kernel 2.6.35-22: all the subdirectories are created, but all empty; moreover, I get as many messages as number of files from the source:
"cp: cannot create the link ...: operation not allowed"
I can copy manually any file to /net/Backup/Folder2 from the client. Why the behavior has changed from kernel 2.6.32-25 to kernel 2.6.35-22 ? Should I modify the permissions or the way the mount is exported with options like "(no_)root_squash", "all_squash", or "anonuid", "anongid" ?

I had Bluetooth PAN network working fine in Lucid. For some reason (mainly hardware) I had to upgrade to Maveric. After that my Bluetooth PAN network stopped working at all. I found out that server host do not even expose any PAN or GN profiles. The only profile it exposes is "Hands-free audio". Setting PAND_ENABLE=1 in '/etc/default/bluetooth' did not have any affect. I attempted to start PAND in listening mode and it exposed PAN profile but any connection was unsuccessful. When I try to connect to any other PAN profile it also had no success with 'Permission denied' message.

wired is fine and fast. Wireless connects but connection goes from 100% to 53% at random, making the connection pretty pointless to use.Probably get fixed in an update. I have tried uninstalling network manager and using wicd. No luck. Well, luck, as in I could connect, but exactly the same as Network Manager. The card is a Realtek RTL8191SEvB. Machine: Toshiba Satellite Pro L510. Any takers? Would really like to get this happening as everything in Maverick is working great apart from it.

I've upgraded to Maverick but now I cannot get my wireless card working. In Lucid it didn't work out of the box, but worked perfectly by wrapping the Windows driver with ndiswrapper.
I noticed when I installed Maverick that wireless is enabled in Network-Manager and it gives me the option to create a wireless network or connect to a hidden network but it's not discovering/showing any of the wireless networks in range! So it seems as though the card is being recognized but the driver isn't working fully...? I tried wrapping the windows drivers, but that didn't change the situation at all.
Details of my system:
Code:
Ubuntu 10.10

I upgraded to Maverick over the weekend from Lucid, and at school yesterday, I could no longer connect to the campus wifi network in my office. I have no problem connecting to the wifi network at home, and my phone still sees and connects to the campus wifi network, so I think the problem is with my laptop (Gateway T-6345u), which doesn't even detect the campus network. As of last week, it connected automatically, and now it can't even see the network.

I am having some trouble getting one PC (Windows XP) to see the printer attached to the other PC (Ubuntu). I went to System > Administration > Printing in Ubuntu and did the following: Checked the box next to "Publish shared printers connected to this system" Checked "Enabled", "Accepting jobs", and "Shared" in the properties of the printer. I have an HP Deskjet 5650. Is there anything else I need to be doing?

I'm using Maverick and since yesterday, my wireless hasn't been working. It was working before with Maverick and I don't recall doing any updates that might have changed wireless configurations.
By "doesn't work" I mean it doesn't recognizes any networks, as if the wireless was turned off (there's this button on laptops, but it's turned on). I had that problem some time ago, but rebooting solved the problem, which, now, didn't.
My laptop is a HP dv6420la.
Where to start?

This week I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 on a newly assembled PC. The hardware I am using is below.
My wife has a Macbook with built-in Wifi connected to our Linksys router. Previously, the connection would drop 0-2 times a day. She would turn off Wifi on her Macbook, turn it back on, and it would reconnect immediately.
Since getting my Ubuntu PC, these disconnections have become more frequent, every 30-90 minutes. They effect both computers simultaneously. And now, I MUST turn off Wifi on my Ubuntu box to regain the connection. Switching it off and on with the Mac doesn't help. Unplugging the router doesn't help. I have to run upstairs and uncheck "Enable Wireless" on the Ubuntu Network Manager outlet.
The connection doesn't seem to drop if the Ubuntu PC is sitting idle. But it can happen with web surfing, Samba file transfers, or torrent downloading.
I noticed that Encore has a linux driver for my card called RT2860. It looks very difficult to install. Ubuntu automatically uses RT2800. So I don't know if this could be a driver issue. Also, shouldn't my bit rate be more than 1Mb/s? Both the router and the card are 802.11n. Are the dmesg errors something to be concerned about?
Machine Brand and Model (PC/Laptop): Self-built Desktop. AMD Phenom, Gigabyte motherboard. Router Brand and Model: Linksys Wireless-N Broadband RouterWRT160Nv2. (I already updated the firmware to the most recent version)

I do not have access in my laptop with ubuntu 10.10 maverick 64bit installed. I deleted network manager when trying to set up a static I.P follow the guid on this page www.liberiangeek.net/2010/09/setup-permanent-static-ip-add I've googled around. The methods suggested to solve it have not been useful in my case. I tried to the method by a user on this forum

sudo ifconfig eth0 up
sudo dhclient eth0
If you have wireless it's a little more complicated, but if you have an unsecured network (no WEP or WPA) and your wireless interface name is say eth1, and your wifi network essid (name) is "mynetwork" it wo
uld be something like this:
sudo ifconfig eth1 down
sudo iwconfig eth1 mode managed essid "mynetwork"
sudo ifconfig eth1 up
sudo dhclient eth1

In System-->Administration-->Additional Drivers I've enabled the 'Broadcom STA wireless driver' and its noted as 'This driver is activated and currently in use.' Changes I made
- I've activated the Nvidia driver.
- I've installed Boxee (media center)
- I'm using CPU frequency scalers for both my cores.
- I've updated my system and am using maverick-security, -updates and -proposed.
- I've installed b43-fwcutter
- I've installed firmware-b43-lpphy-installer
Other than those adjustments the system is completely fresh. When I suspend or hibernate and activate my laptop again it only shows a backlight-lit black screen and does not continue restoring. Other than the occasional flash my cpu 'business' indicator led does nothing. BUT The wireless led is now on. I've tried the Broadcom B43 driver as you could've guessed from the changes I made, no result. I had to use the 'lpphy' installer(for BCM4312 (with Low-Power aka LP-PHY)), the 'legacy' and normal version both gave an error upon executing the post installation script.

Terminal lspci -v command tells me that the network adapter is present as Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter on PCI-E - rev 01 and that the ath9k module is being used by the kernel.

I'm attempting to install a command-line version of Maverick, from the alternate CD. I'm using the 64-bit version. The installation has gone fine - however, I'm having troubles getting the wireless to work. I've installed wireless-tools by carting the *.deb archive over from another computer - this seemed to go fine, and iwconfig shows my wireless card as "wlan0". However, even after setting the essid and the WEP key I can't connect to the internet (tested this using apt-get). I know that this wireless card requires the "rtl8187se" module, which automatically loads with the desktop version of Maverick - however, it isn't working on the command-line. Running "sudo modprobe rtl8187se" pings back an error message saying that the module can't be found. Is there a way for me to manually install it or "find" it?

I just installed 10.10 for netbooks, and apparently it's using the RT2800PCI driver for my wireless NIC in my EeePC 901. That driver is causing havoc with my school network, I keep getting disconnected, and loading websites is really slow.
Now I know that 10.04 uses a different driver RT2860 which seems to work far better on this network.
How to change to the driver from lucid. Or does anyone know of an even better solution? I've heard rumors about something called ndiswrapper...

Can you "split" a network interface in Ubuntu, similar to how airmon-ng lets you use your wireless card in managed and monitor mode, by making another interface out of the same hardware? I know it'd be slower, but I'd still like to do it.
