Ubuntu Networking :: Hawking HWUN3 Hi-Gain Wireless Adapter?
Feb 4, 2010I have this new Hawking adapter, and have googled some, and have found no one who has had sucess, but then again I only saw two threads. So, what I was wondering was, does anyone know if these are compatible with ubuntu in any way, shape, or form, and how I would install them, I have Ndiswrapper, but am just learning Ubuntu's OS and don't know how to work the commands.

Jan 14, 2011I have a friend that recently moved to Linux. She had started out with Ubutnu 9.04, which was giving her a lot of Issues along with being no longer supported, so I recommend Linux Mint 10 to her, since she wanted something closer to Windows. I instructed her on how to do a clean install. Linux Mint installed ok, but when she was about to set up wireless to get on the Internet, she realised that she had forgotten her password. She called her network (Belkin) for assistance to retrieve it. She was told that Linux is not really supported; however they gave her this address to access the router: 192.186.2.1 from her browser which did not work. So there was nothing further they could have done since she couldn't gain access to the router. She is currently only able to use Ethernet connection to get online.
What could she do to reset her password or gain access to the router? I didn't want to tell her to reset the modem in case it will leave her with no internet and no way to setup her router.

I always get the same messages: cannot lock administration library (var/lib/pkg/) (11 temporarily unavailable) and cannot get lock/var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 temporarily unavailable)
How do I gain access to these libraries?

Dec 21, 2010I'm trying to use a persistent install of Lubuntu 10.10 on a USB flash drive. I thought it was working at first, but the wireless connection won't happen at all; period!
Whenever I click on the network Icon, all I get is a pop up message telling me I'm not connected to the wireless Then when I click on the wireless menu to select a network, the sign in window closes before I can even try to do anything with it, and then I get that "your not connected" pop up message again.
It's quite irritating. It basically won't let me sign on to a wireless Internet connection at all.Every time I do try to connect all I get is the "your not connected" message and nothing else. I'm using a 16 GB Kingston Data Traveler USB flash drive and am trying to run it on a Toshiba A100 Satellite laptop.
I've also been experimenting with a 16 GB Kingston Data Traveler 102 USB flash drive, with Linux Mint 9 LXDE installed on it and haven't had any problems with that one accessing wireless connections on the same computer.
Does anyone know what would cause this? It seems to boot well enough. But I just can't get Lubuntu 10.10 to access wireless networks to save my life. Could it be a hardware issue? I should note too that I used exactly the same USB flash drive on the same computer when giving Xubuntu 10.10 a "test drive" as a persistent install. But I didn't have any troubles like that with it.

I type in su and hit enter it asks me for my password and I type that in. The password fails, why is this? I am the one who set this up and installed the OS. Jul 20, 2009After installing Fedora 6 (and probably any later version) I find that access to the add/remove section is denied unless I have an Internet connection which I don't have. I just do not see any reason why this is done this way! One can't even gain access with the DVD Is there a way to circumvent this nuisance from the terminal Does anyone know why this is put into the installation in the first place.?

Feb 1, 2010Have spent 6-8 hours trying to get the darn wireless to work. Started on Network Manager, switched to WICD, then back to Network manager. Have uninstalled and reinstalled driver a dozen times. When I go to System->Administration->Windows Wireless Drivers, get pop-up saying "Unable to see if hardware is present" When I click "OK" then network driver window says "Hardware present: Yes" and the driver is listed.First time user of Linux, and getting frustrated.I really want this to work so I can become as smart as all of you reading this post.

May 2, 2011I just upgraded ubuntu to 11.04 and I need to install the wireless driver again. I downloaded the driver and I am getting the following error when running make:

I connected via ethernet just fine, but wireless is crucial for this laptop, and the additional drivers GUI program says nothing (or at least it finds nothing).
Am a bit stuck on what to do?

Feb 2, 2010I am semi new to linux and i was getting the hang of it until just recently. I'm trying to do some web design using php and mysql. In my reference material (the all in one desktop reference {for dummies}). At some point I needed to do something in /var/www but I ran into a permissions problem so I typed:

Afterwards in some subsequent step it suggested putting the files in /usr/src/mysql. Since I didn't have that folder I used mkdir and created it. Then I tried adding the files I needed to that folder and got denied on the grounds of not having permissions once again. So tried something like this:

It was a 755 originally but I couldn't copy those commands. It turns out as that I had two terminals open in different desktops. one of them was a root terminal. It was at this point that realized that I was in that root terminal and decided I was done 'learning' for the day. I decided to listen to some music (which is located in my windows partion) and ran into a problem. The prompt that pops up to normally asks me for my admin PW to mount the drive. Now just vibrates like an incorrect entry was received, says authentication error and says I am not authorized to mount that drive then I went back to terminal to fix it, and when I tried to elevate myself to SU:

I am trying to use this program on Ubuntu 9.10 (64bit), and when attempting to play the audio file (standard mp3 format) I get the error message:

Mar 28, 2010A friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.
Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:
1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.
2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).
3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

Apr 30, 2010Just upgraded to Lucid from Karmic. First thing I notice after restart is that I have no wireless. No big deal, I probably just need to re-install the proprietary drivers. I go to do this, and it gives me an error message, saying that the installation has failed. This has never happened before, and didn't happen when I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic. I have an HP dv6 1230us and a Broadcom STA card.
I really need the internet to be working, and didn't anticipate that an upgrade, of all things, would screw it up...

May 3, 2010I have been struggled with wireless connection. Here is the things... My room doesn't have moduler jack. So basically my landlord is sharing with his wifi. Also, my desktop is using Netgear wireless adapter for internet. My laptop and desktop are windows 7 which can conncet with internet very well. But my Linux Os in my desktop couldn't conncet. Recently I installed ubuntu because my co-worker told me ubuntu can be applied to connect with internet through wireless.
However, how can my ubuntu os get wireless connection without ethernet cable. Actually, my harddisk drive is multiple boot containing windows 7, Ubuntu, and Centos. Windows 7 can connect internet smoothly. But you know, Ubuntu and Centos can't do nothing. So I am stacking this situation not to connect internet through Linux OS right now.
My Netgear USB adapter is WG111US.
