Ubuntu Networking :: 2wire Prodigy Infinitum Not Detected?
Jul 1, 2010
I got a Dell Inspiron with Windows 7, i instaled Ubuntu 10.04, and a can't get connected to internet, en my NM icon doesn't appear the wireless conection i have in my home, it is a 2wire router from prodigy infinitum.
I'm brand new to Ubuntu, and Linux in general, and honestly don't know what I am doing. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my external hard drive and am able to boot fine (other than an issue with my monitor falling asleep because my graphics card needs a different driver. I have a work around for this that i'm currently using but I would like to fix it permanently and thus need an internet connection.)
When trying to connect to the network in my home, I am unable to. I click on the WiFi symbol in the top right corner, and I can see my network. I then click it and a page comes up asking for the key. I put it in but it doesn't sync and usually after a minute or so it pops back up asking for the key again. What can I do to gain internet access? I'm unable to connect my computer via a hard wire Ethernet cord and need to sort out this WiFi issue.
One day I lost my WiFi connection while doing nothing particularly interesting. OK then...I investigate, and I find that it only connects occasionally, and when it does, even then it will render a page almost none of the time. I can't even ping anything. I tried going to the router's config page (192.168.1.254 for this one) and found that even that won't load. I power cycled the router, and it did nothing. I thought that the router was dying, but I realized when I switched to Windows 7 (this is a dual boot machine) it works fine. Also, when I went back to Ubuntu and tried connecting to a neighbor down the block's WiFi, it also works fine (this is what I'm using to post this message.) I did all I could to fix this, even to the point of dismantling the machine and moving cards around and such, but it did nothing. I finally formatted my Ubuntu partition and reinstalled, and it also did nothing. It also doesn't work from the Live CD. The router works fine on all the other computers in the house, wired or wireless, and also my phone and PSP's.
While connected, in Firefox, sites sit at "looking up", "waiting for", or "connecting to". It seems to be at random which one. They all time out, none of them say server not found. I thought it was a DNS problem, so I tried some DNS's I know (Google's, OpenDNS, DNS Advantage etc.) but it did bupkis. One thing I notice is that while connected, I have a fantastic signal strength of about 85%, when before any of this happened, it was more around 70%. I didn't move the antenna anywhere or anything having to do with the reception. Also, once connected, it stays connected, it's just getting it initialized that's the problem, but even while connected it doesn't seem to work well.
This is incredibly frustrating, as I did not change anything with the router at all, in any way shape or form. It just spontaneously decided to not like Linux. The router's model is 2700HG-B.Could it be that my wireless card is dying? I've had the thing for 6 years, and had no sign of it failing. I'm thinking that can't be it because it works with the same computer and network, but with a different OS. Could there be something wrong with the Ubuntu driver for my card, ath5k? I was going to say there's something up with wpa supplicant, because I use WPA-PSK for authentication, but I turned that off from another computer and it still does not work.
Again, the problem is that Ubuntu works with every router I can connect to EXCEPT mine, and Windows 7 on the same machine works with the same router. My router works with every other device in the house. I have changed nothing networking related, and even reinstalling Ubuntu did nothing. I would try it with Ubuntu on another machine, but my machine is the only wireless one in the house (and I can't put Ubuntu on the wired ones, that would PO some people),and I would try it with a different wireless card/USB thingy, but I don't have another one.
EDIT: I got some other Live CDs out, I tried Kubuntu 10.04, and Ubuntu 9.10. NEITHER WORK!
I just installed 11.04 on my laptop and the wireless works fine connecting to a AT&T 2Wire router when the ac power adapter is connected. When running on battery power I stay connected to the router but barely any information is transmitted. ie. if i restart the router connection on my computer I can load a web page like google.com then nothing else will work unless I restart the connection again. If I am right next to the router it will continue to work but very slow ( takes about a minute to load ......com when it only takes 2 seconds on ac power ). When I run windows 7 everything works fine when on battery power. Also every thing works fine on a linksys router with ac and battery power.Dell Inspiron 14R Processor: i5-2400MWireless Card: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal
AT&T will not help. I am trying to connect with Cable (CAT5). When I try to configure my network card with YaST here is the message received. "Unable to configure the network card becasue the kernal device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly cause by missing firmware (for wlan device) See dmesg output for details"
make a wireless connection to an ATT 2wire router ESSID called "WIGGERS" that I do not control. My Dell D630 does connect successfully to other WPA broadcasts. I am running Natty (11.04) with the default Unity interface.iwconfig does see "WIGGERS", but the Network Connections application on the menu bar eventually times out and asks for the authentication code. When I put in the code, it still does not connect.I do successfully connect to "WIGGERS" using another laptop running Win XP so I know the code is correct. The Windows machine indicates that it is using:etwork authentication: WPA2-PSK Data encryption AESSomething that may be causing the problem is that the router is apparently putting out two signals (see iwlist output below). Both Cell 01 and Cell 02 have the same ESSID.Below I have pasted output from lspci, iwconfig, and iwlist:
I used LILI to create a live USB key - I believe I used the 686MB version. Everything worked fine. I wanted to try the full DVD install, so I did the same with that image.
Now, it doesn't matter if I load it in virtualbox or if I boot up my comp with the USB stick, I get to the Linux boot menu, choose "Persistent Mode", and then below it shows "Automatic boot in 10 Seconds..."
Once it counts down to 0 it just resets to 10, and keeps on counting!
My 2Wire router/modem I got from AT&T for my DSL has port 3479 TCP open and I can't figure out how to close it. It's open to the entire internet. From a quick google search it's some port AT&T can use to update the modem's firmware or something.Consider how in bed AT&T is with government agencies it seems like a easy way for the government to get into my home network just by using what seems to me a backdoor put there by AT&T. Anyway to close this or secure it. Right now I'm using the hardware as my main router for my home network. I have Linsys I modded with DD-WRT. I'm thinking of re-configuring my network to use the DD-WRT router as the main router and the 2wire just as a modem. The 2wire is a hybrid modem/router and I'm kind of lazy and don't feel like re-configuring my entire network if I can just close the port.
i have a problem with detecting PC in LAN. I have installed ubuntu 1(lucid lynx)10.4 to four PCs in our school. I have connected it to router. All four PCs can connect and browse internet but cannot detect each one in the local network. I have edited already the network connections. Each one has unique IP address. However, after several trial of connecting to PC within the LAN, still i failed to detect local PC.
I am using Ubuntu 9.04 with latest updated kernel,Yestarday I purchased a Netgaer WG111v3 USB Adopter (Here is the Product Page). When I plug this device it instantly detected but can't browse the internet,Blue Led is also lit up &ystem->Administration->NetworkHere is the Screenshot. But this Wi-Fi USB dongle flawlessly work under Windows XP after installing the driver from the CD.In windows it can't be detected automatically but in Ubuntu can.So my question is,what else I need to perform to get the work done?Tried NDIS Wrapper but can't find any .inf file in the driver CD.Installed Wi-fi Radar but it can't did anything better.
just installed ubuntu 10.04 and the wifi networks are not detected as in 9.10.In 9.10 installing bcm-wl helped me.. but here the pacakage does not even install succesfully....i have installed b43..
I got my hands on an old BorderWare MXtreme MX-200 mail firewall and decided to install Ubuntu 10.04.1 on it and use it as a regular firewall - just for funzies. It's basically just a vanilla P4 PC in a 1U rack casing, so the hardware is not too exotic. After adding some RAM (and hooking up a CD-ROM to be able to boot from CD), Ubuntu installed and works fine, except for the second NIC.The NIC is there, enabled in BIOS and detected by Ubuntu:
I installed ubuntu and i installed it using the install as a program inside windows options but when I boot into ubuntu it does not detect any networks I tried the command sudo pppoeconf it says ethernet card is not there and then it asked me to try modconf and when i try modconf it says that modconf is not installed How can i set internet connection in ubuntu 10.04 I get address assigned by DHCP
Recently I bought a USB modem SEOWON SWU-3120. According to the manufacturer, Linux is supported, but ubuntu doesn't detect it Both "usb-modemswitch-data" and "usb-modeswitch" packages are installed (I use GSM and CDMA modems without any problem). When I try to add a new broadband network I have only two choices: GSM and CDMA networks. WiMAX doesn't appear. Looks like Ubunto 10.10 "doesn't know" about the existence of the WiMAX technology. I sent some e-mails to the manufacturer but they never answered.
I friend of mine informed me to try the following commands: sudo lshw -C network lsusb
I use ubuntu 9.10 and PCI connected Conexant CX11252 Modem. My GNOME PPP doesn't detects my modem. How can I create a connection? Is there any way to detect my modem and connect ? or ubuntu is fit only for broadband? I think most of the activities in ubuntu depends on internet. I can't do any work. I am losing my money in Internet Cafe. Broadband is even not available in my resident area. Therefore. find a solution to connect internet via my dial up modem!
I have freshly installed ubuntu 9.10 and moreover i am completely a newbie to Linux. The problem now i am facing is, i am not able to configure my wireless router. I tried finding drivers for it in System->administration->hardware drivers. But it showed me none. Then i checked out one of the threads in this forum and came across the 'lspci -nn' cmd. This gave me the info abt my wireless network controller and it was : 'Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g [14e4:4315] (rev 01)'.
I have been having trouble getting my network card to access networks. I currently am using a wired connection. A while ago when I first installed Linux on this same computer, I got it working by installing the driver. But since I reinstalled Linux, I tried the process again with no success. Can anyone give me explicit instructions on installing the network card driver so I can use it on Linux.
I run ubuntu 9.10. I recently convinced my wife to give it a shot. The problem is, the bluetooth dongle is detected and the icon appears when its plugged in, the mouse is found and says it is pointing in bluetooth manager but it does not move the cursor on the screen. I have tried 2 different dongles and both work correctly and control the mouse on my asus laptop. She is using a toshiba satelite. Both dongles show up in lsusb as hci0. I've tried everything on the forums and everything I could think of but no go. If she doesn't have use of the mouse for farmville I will be in trouble.
I just installed ubuntu 9.10 in my freinds laptop and it has a realtek 81878 wireless card...it detects the wireless networks but when i connect it just keeps on asking for the authentication key again and again.
I have bought a new laptop with W7 installed. And I installed dual boot with Ubuntu 9.10 on it.I tried to connect my laptop to Internet by Ethernet port. It works with W7, but Ubuntu doesn't detect my Network card .After some research on Internet, I suppose that it's a problem of drivers for this card. Here some parameters I could get :
>ifconfig : lo Link encap:Boucle locale inet adr:127.0.0.1 Masque:255.0.0.0
I'm dual-booting Ubuntu 9.10 (upgraded from 9.04) and Windows 7 on my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop.Ubuntu doesn't recognize any wireless network (both in 9.04 and 9.10); my Windows OS works perfectly well with wireless, as does my wired Internet connection with Ubuntu and Windows.I've had this problem on previous installations of Ubuntu (I've removed and re-installed it several times) but I can't locate the solution anywhere. I've tried numerous fixes that I've found online, but none of them have worked.System>Administration>Hardware Drivers tells me that the Broadcom STA Wireless driver is activated and currently in use
I have just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and now my wireless card isn't being detected as far as I know. It was working perfectly in the previous version. At the moment I've physically put an ethernet cable straight to the router.
I'm in serious need of some help. The network adapter on the motherboard of my main machine apparently failed about noon today. This machine serves as the firewall and router for my home office LAN, and so it has two network adapters, the second being a PCI card installed in the only PCI slot of the mobo. The mobo's adapter served the WAN while the PCI card serves the LAN.Since the mobo has only one PCI slot, none of the other PCI cards I have on hand could be used. Instead, I pulled an unused PCI-e dialup modem card from the machine, and bought a PCI express gigabit card to put in its place.
The problem is that the machine (running Hardy 8.04.4 LTS) does not recognize the new card at all. Running lspci shows only the old PCI card that serves the LAN. Similarly, running "sudo lshw" shows only the old PCI card together with a virtual adapter that's part of my VirtualBox installation on that system.I then dual-booted into Vista Home and attempted to install the new card there, using the CD that came with it. Vista detected the card and asked for the disk, but then was unable to find any drivers on the disk! The box says the card is from Star Tech, and the instruction sheet says its model is ST1000SPEX.If anyone can point me to the correct module to add to the startup list and/or remove from the blacklist, that may get me going again.
im on compaq presario cq40 (amd64 turion x2) and recently install ubuntu.10.04 using wubi with dual os.. im installed wireless braodcom BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY 'bcm43xx-fwcutter_006-3_amd64.deb' driver for my laptop and restart my machine.. when i go to > hardware dirver, there is no driver installed.. any suggestion? or lists any driver compatible with my laptop..
I'm a ubuntu linux 10.04 LTS user with a problem. i have been using a vodafone 3G card in South Africa and it has been working correctly. I have used it since Ubuntu 9 and it was correctly detected all the time, so that's great.
But then I got myself a mifi 2352 device (for those who do not know, it is a device that shares a mobile 3G connection to at most 5 users using wifi. it also works in usb mode, like a normal 3G card when you plug it on computer. You can just google the device for more info.
My problem is when i plug in the device through the usb, Ubuntu does not detect, which is very frustrating. I've tried a lot of things, including installing "vodafone-mobile-connect_2.25.01-1_all" with no success.
Is there any reasobn why the mifi 2352 is not detected by Ubuntu?
I just recently installed ubuntu 10.04 and I am having no luck connecting to my network via wireless. I went into the top right with the little wireless icon to see no networks detected. I tried using lspci which came back with no wireless adapters[URL]..
Installed 10.10 using wubi. My wireless NIC is not detected in ndisgtk (although the driver: PRISMA02.inf is installed). The lights on the DWL-G122 are on normally while operating under Windows XP, but turn off after it's unplugged and plugged back in under Ubuntu.
EDIT: I've attached an image of my wireless NIC so you know what I'm dealing with.
a few weeks back I got an Indian Reliance 3g dongle. I installed usb-modeswitch, plugged in and it seemed to work brilliantly in Ubuntu 10.04.The problem was it was dropping the connection every ten minutes. The logs had the error message "Terminating on signal 15".I had to unplug the dongle and then it would connect again.x the problem, I tried installing first Sakis3G and then Betawine, both of which were reported by some users to haved. Sakis said "the device did not report GSM capabilities"d no good.Installing Betawine was apparently a bad idea, as after that the dongle ceased to work with Network Manager and Betawine itself was useless. Uninstalling Betawine and re-installing usb-modeswitch did no good. Now, when I plug in the dongle, the logs say:Quote:
