Fedora :: Get The VBox Video Driver To Work In FC12?

Feb 28, 2010

Host: CentOS 5.4 x32
Guest: FC12 x32
Virtual machine: Virtual Box (VBox) 3.1.4

The 640 x 480 video display on my FC12 guest is driving me nuts! The VBox Guest Additions are installed. How do I get FC12 to recognize the VBox video driver?

Extra information:

Auto resize works great on my Windows guests. On FC12, I just get a lot of extra white space.

FC12's installer does not detect a video card. You have to use the stand display option (second one down) to get FC12 to go into a full graphical installer. If you use the regular install, hoping to do a graphical install, FC 12 only install the bare basics. No video support. You get what looks like a rescue cd. No Gnone, no X etc.

I do believe that FC12 has no idea that the VBox's fake video adapter even exists.

Ubuntu :: Making FakeRaid Work On 9.10?

Jul 19, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit) as a dual-boot setup (along with Win 7) on my desktop. I can't emphasize how much faster Ubuntu loads when compared with Windows. There is only one problem though, I cannot figure out how to use my existing FakeRaid array (two 2TB hdds setup as RAID 1 - mirroring) to work with Ubuntu. I am NOT trying to install Ubuntu onto a raid array (I have Win 7 mounted on a separate boot drive , 4 hdds altogether, two for each OS and two for the RAID array). The raid array works fine in Windows and it's an Intel Raid Controller. How can I do the same for Ubuntu without losing any data? Is this possible?

Ubuntu Installation :: Letting Vista Take Charge?

Apr 28, 2010

For a while now, I have multibooted my Vista installation with Ubuntu. However, up until now I have been happy with Ubuntu being in charge of my boot options. I am wanting to change my bootloader so that when my machine boots, and no choices are made at the boot menu, Vista automatically starts after a set amount of time instead of Ubuntu.

I know the boys over at APC have a guide on how to do this, but it involves copying information from the menu.lst file and using EasyBCD - I was wondering if these steps will still work now that I am running Karmic Koala, which I understand uses a different method of changing GRUB entries (manipulating the menu.lst file is no longer part of this process and is no longer recommended)

If someone could tell me how to put Vista in charge of my boot options so that it will boot automatically instead of Linux, that would be greatness.

CC is now complete (didn't have access to the internet for 3 days so I couldn't upload it) but its working fine. Tested it out with an ISO and it works perfect. Rename to .deb and install it. Even though it says 11.04 - it works on any system with a problematic version of compiz. It is also harmless on a system without compiz although it does depend on it. cc-11.04.deb.zip

Ubuntu / Apple :: Displaying Battery Charge In Indicator Area?

Oct 15, 2010

on a Powerbook with 10.10 installed. The battery icon doesn't show up in the indicator area next to the sound volume when I'm unplugged unless I select to have the icon displayed even when my computer is plugged in. And even then, it doesn't show current battery charge.I have added pmu_battery to /etc/modules , and /proc/pmu/battery_0 has relevant information on battery charge, and emacs seems smart enough to know my battery level.I tried to install pmud, and but that conflicts with pbbuttonsd and removing that would remove ubuntu-desktop! :O (I would like to try pmud and pommed, as those seem to have a better feature set than pbbuttonsd.)

Fedora :: Fluxbox Laptop Battery Charge Meter

Jun 24, 2011

I've been tooling around with Fedora with the Fluxbox environment on my old Dell 400SD4 laptop and it works fantastic. I'm still getting a feel for the environment, but one major concern that I had was a battery meter. Being a laptop, it's important to know when I'm almost out of juice. Does anyone have any suggestions for a battery meter for Fluxbox? Preferably one that can be installed through the yum repositories?

Hardware :: Charge A Prestigio Libretto Per3362b Ebook Reader?

Apr 29, 2011

I've just bought a Prestigio Libretto Per3362b Ebook Reader from Amazon. According to the instruction sent with it I am supposed to connect it to a computer via a usb port and to press the power button to turn on/off the device. It is supposed to take 12 hours for the first time. These instructions make no sense to me (do I turn it on or off and how do I know if it's on or off?) and pushing the button seems to have no visible effect on the reader (no lights go on, etc.). Charging the thing for 12 hours has no obvious effect. Can anyone walk me through the initial charging operation?

Debian Hardware :: Find Out What Is Making The Sound Card Work?

May 31, 2011

I have a Toshiba laptop and Toshiba netbook (both Intel chipsets). Laptop - Squeeze install gave me the 2.6.32 kernel and sound only worked thru headphones but not the speakers. Later on, I compiled kernel 2.6.36.1 (and just imported .config from original kernel) and sound WORKED perfectly. I had a few other errors ("address space collision" / PM error) so recently I compiled kernel 2.6.38, which solved other hardware issues but sound is back to original problem (works thru headphones but not thru speakers). I even installed the "backports" kernel (2.6.38.4) and it didn't make a difference.

Netbook - Did exact same things as above but no matter what, the sound never worked on it... same issue (sound in headphones.. no sound in speakers) So, how do I "reverse-engineer" the laptop working sound install with kernel 3.6.36.1 and make it work with later kernel (nothing... and I've tried about 30+ thread suggestions makes the sound cards work properly.. other than kernel 2.6.36.1)

This camera DOES works on openSUSE 11.1 but not on 11.2 (my current setup) and after a lot of research i realise that the preblem is that the proper driver "sn9c102" for my webcam is not compiled on the new kernels.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Audio Via HDMI/DisplayPort - Chances Making It Work?

May 11, 2011

I occasionally use a DisplayPort->HDMI cable to connect my laptop to my AV-Receiver, however I only get the picture to the AV-Receiver, but no sound. I read that not all DisplayPort->HDMI cables support sound, so I tested Windows7 on the same machine and it transmitted sound over that cable just fine. So I conclude that it is a Linux driver problem.

So I generally wonder whether this can be made to work easily or not. Does anyone here have experiences with this topic, especially with nvidia graphics cards managing the display port? (I did find older posts about HDMI audio, but they were all concerned with ATI graphics.)

pavucontrol / phonon do list a "High Definition Audio Controller Digital Stereo (HDMI)"-device, but sending sound to it does not do a thing. Furthermore, my dell laptop only has a displayport, but no HDMI connector.

Ubuntu :: Netflix Won't Play Through Vbox

Sep 13, 2010

I put vbox on my wife's Dell Inspiron 6000 to play Netflix but the video won't play. After buffering it says there's an "internet connection problem". From what I've read that means the connection is too slow. Netflix works fine on my wired desktop (also Lucid+vbox) and on the same laptop booting into Windows (not VM). So I'm thinking there's a problem with vbox slowing the connection between the laptop's wireless and the VM?

I don't know if it will help with Netflix but 2D video acceleration is grayed out on vbox. Strangely, the 3D acceleration is fine and I can select it. If this is due to an unsupported video driver, can I change it?

Ubuntu :: VBox Guest Cannot Access Internet?

Aug 27, 2010

I have a virtual XP as guest in VirtualBox on a computer running Hardy. I used to be able to access the internet from the virtual XP, using Internet Explorer or Google Chrome with no problem - it just used the Ubuntu host's connection, whch it seemed to see as a "NAT Adapter".

It still sees this NAT connection - if I hover the pointer over the Network icon in VBox it says "Adapter 1 (NAT): cable connected". And if I use Firefox from the host OS, it connects just fine.

Why can the virtual XP no longer access the internet?
