View 3 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to configure a cron script to update the packages in /var/cache/apt-cacher/packages? When a client machine updates a package, apt-cacher checks that it's cached package is up-to-date, and downloads a new version if it is not.
I'd like apt-cacher to check it's cached packages every night and download any updated ones, on the premise that since it exists in the apt-cacher cache, someone has that package installed and is going to want to update it. Is this possible? Does apt-cacher do this anyway, and I haven't noticed?
I'm working on a web site. I'm sometimes finding that when I update a file, some mysterious force intercepts my changes and refuses to let me see them. I have confirmed that this mysterious force is a server cache.By adding a "?" to the end of the URL, I can see the changes I've made. Is there a way to somehow force my Internet provider to update the server cache?

the process keeps running, so I find this more strange since it's not in zombie or D state.
I would like to authenticate my laptop against LDAP server.
My setup works great when LDAP server is reachable.
I used the outdated howto: [URL] to configure libpam-ccreds in lucid.
If I try to login with network down I am getting message: You loged in using cashed credentials. and then Authentication failure.
sudo cc_dump looks OK.
Should I use pam-auth-update insted?
i am running Ubuntu Lucid x64 as a fileserver that shares its files via SFTP, NFS and Samba. Currently the hard disks are configured to go to standby if they are not needed. This works perfectly as long as no one browses the shares or my HTPC is running: That one repeatedly looks through the shares for new music or movies. In other words my problem is that the disks are spinning up a lot more often than they should have to. Additionally the spin-up time delays the response time while browsing. Since the machine has a lot of unused RAM i want to tell the kernel that it should keep the directory structure in memory. That way the disks would not need to spin up every time someone browses through the directories.

I was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.
Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).
I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?

you type: sh VirtualBox-xxx.run install
this goes through but the screen says "could not compile the kernel module vboxdrv.ko, see the install log"
the install log in /var/log says this:

ok, I've left out a bunch of stuff but, NO these 2 files are NOT missing. I have all the required compile-type packages and the source and headers. Under /usr/src there are :
1: /linux-2.6.31.12-0.2
2: /linux-2.6.31.12-0.2-obj
3: /linux/obj
4: linux
num 4 is a symbolic which points to 1:. num 3 has a sub-dir /i386/default which links to the /default in 2:
the supposed missing files are in sub-dir in 2:
This is what I did. I changed num 4: to point to 2:, deleted all the vbox stuff and re-tried install - still same result.
I reset num 4: to point to 1: and did the "make oldconfig && make prepare". This put new sub-dir entries under 1: with the 2 files in correct sub-dirs. Delete vbox and try re-install - still same result.
Some things I left out of the error log at the start show that the install's use of "make" relates to both dirs 1: and 2: so even with both having the files the install is still barfing.
Perhaps related to this, at the log end there are errors about the /tmp/vbox and some SUPdrv.c files.
I looked in the forums and there are suggestions wrt errors about these missing files that the fault lies with kernels 2.6.33 which puts these missing files in a different named sub-dir - /generated. Well as you see above, kernel is a 2.6.31
There's supposed to be a command line option for the shell install where you add " -- xxxxx " where xxxxx is extra instructions. I tried to put definitive pointers to the sub-dirs involved there but not successful.
After doing make I have the following questions? How can I see that the build is with debug information? What shall I do to build the release version? Can I have the release version in one directory and the debug version in another? I mean, when I change from debug to release, make will not overwrite the debug version.

View 6 Replies View Relatedi was looking for a way to stop my menus taking a few seconds to load my icons when i first open them and found a few guides suggesting using the gtk-upate-icon-cache command, but with the any colour you like icon theme i'm using (stored in my home folder .icons directory) i kept getting a "gtk-update-icon-cache: The generated cache was invalid." fault i used the inbuilt facility in the acyl script to copy the icons to the usr/share/icons directory and tried the command again, this time using sudo gtk-update-icon-cache --force --ignore-theme-index /usr/share/icons/ACYL_Icon_Theme_0.8.1/ but i still get the same error. i tried with several of the custom icon themes i've installed and only 1 of the first 7 or 8 i tried successfully created the cache.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhenever I move files from a USB memory stick or external hard drive or any other such device the file only seems to transfer 99% of the data and often during moving file operations will freeze and an offer of 'force quit' will come up (although file operations will eventually vanish with the 99% of the file being moved).
Can anything be done to rectify problems with file operations?
Whenever I open a folder using the gnome panel (places,) Nautilus runs and the window looks like it was designed when the first GUI was. It's all grey and doesn't match the rest of the GUI at all.However, when I gksudo nautilus in Terminal, the window that opens looks perfectly fine and how it should look.Also, the messed up nautilus does not have a bar with File, edit, and the other options.

Awhile back I was playing around with Plymouth and GDM resolutions. I followed some wrong instructions and screwed up my GDM. I have fixed my GDM, sorta, but at times it will not start or when it does the login screen has strange pixel errors.
Sometimes it starts fine without any problems or pixel errors. Other times I have to boot 2 to 3 times before GDM will start.
If GDM starts with pixel errors, I can still login to Ubuntu and the rest of the OS runs fine. Pixel errors only happen in GDM.
When GDM fails to start I get a blank black screen. Cannot enter command line. OS seems frozen and I have to reboot.
Here is a description of my problem:I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop with the default Ambiance theme. I have my bottom panel deleted and instead use Docky.Sometimes on boot/reboot one of a few things happens.Either:1)My Ambiance theme loads, then...unloads?My top panel and all Nautilus windows turn to a flat gray "theme" as if I guess there are no appearance settings enabled. If I open appearance settings my panel returns to theme without doing anything else, but my Nautilus windows are still out of theme.2)My Docky bar never loads up and I have to start it manually, it then loads/works fine as if nothing is wrong.3)Both problems 1 & 2 combined.
My setup is Ubuntu 10.04 64bit running on an Athlon x2 3.0GHz with 8gig of DDR2 dual channel RAM and a Geforce 9800GTX+ video card. I had the latest factory NVidia driver installed and figured that might be causing the problem. I switched an older release of the NVidia driver last night to see if that fixes anything, but being an intermittent problem only a few days use will tell. I would not use the NVidia drivers at all, but I figured I would not be able to use Docky as it requires compositing to be enabled (which I was under the assumption were under the special effects that I need the NVidia driver for).
I bought a new Samsung R530 laptop, which is a 64bit, a few months ago and have been struggling to get the thing working properly since.I removed W7 and install Ubuntu 10.4, which I found was freezing periodically for five to ten minutes, then I installed 10.10 beta, finding that this too kept 'sticking'.I had hoped that the full release would have fixed the issues, but this too was slow, the mouse froze constantly and any video I played would freeze up with sound playing normally in the background.I have followed some of the threads here and none of these things have worked for me.
On my HP netbook, my old Acer laptop and my PC, everything works fine!!!I have since installed an older copy of Ubuntu 9.10 and this seems to be working fine. No 'sticking' mouse, no system locks.Its fast and smooth, just what I have come to love about linux.What has happened to the new versions of Ubuntu?
