Not sure why this is happening. I've tried searching for a solution but it's not clear where I went wrong. I wasn't doing any real modifications to anything.
Attached is a picture of Nautilus not changing with one of the default themes, "High Contrast".
Installed 10.10 a couple weeks ago on my machine, and for the life of me, I can't find out where/how to remove the text from the toolbar icons in Nautilus.
There used to be an option under "Change Desktop Background", but it's no longer there. I checked gconf-editor and can't find an entry under metacity.
Any idea how to remove the text next to the toolbar icons in Gnome (nautilus) in Ubuntu 10.10?
Not sure if this is just GNOME 2.30 removing customization ability, but I can't find how to add icons to the menu dropdowns and customize the nautilus toolbar (put text below buttons, etc) in Lucid. Is this function still there?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've recently acquire a new HDD and I've decided to use it for multimedia files.
So I've edited my fstab so it mounts this disk at startup.
What's more important, I've bind the folders in that disk (i.e. media/theDisk/Music) to a folder in my home directory (i.e. /home/me/Music) so I can have all the folder mounted at home (Mount the disk in /home/user is not possible because Nautilus start to whim about not being able to set some files in .nautilus or something, I believe its because it does not know which disk to save to or something like that)
So everything works fine, except for folder icons. When I open the home directory, all folders in the disk are shown with the Desktop default icon. Even if I change them (whether from home or from the mounted disk) the next time I open the home directory they are shown with the Desktop icon. Emblems are lost too.
I installed the elementary theme and played with it. Unfortunately, I accidentally remove the icons in the file manager. Refer to attached image.How will I display the icons, menus and address bar again?

Only icons left are Backward and Forward buttons. I have removed elementary repository and reinstalled the nautilus but it didn't restore the default nautilus. How can I restore it? Is there any additional packages to install?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Lucid installation which I've imaged and pushed to several computers on the network at my office. The system authenticates network users with Active Directory using Kerberos, and mounts NFS shares from a Lucid server downstairs using pam_mount. It all works quite smoothly most of the time, but I get desktop icons in Gnome only on the first login. If I log out, then log in as a different user (local or network, it doesn't matter), the desktop icons are all gone. Everything else looks normal, and I can open a Nautilus window and view any location on the hard drive just as expected. If I use the run dialog or a terminal window to executekillall nautilus the icons are restored. This works whether any instance of a file browser window is open or not.
I have noticed similar, but far less consistent, behavior with gnome-panel. Every once in a while the panels will fail to appear when I log in, but I can restore them withkillall gnome-panel When I run either command, everything works fine until the next login. If I reboot the machine, I get everything back again for one login. Then the desktop icons will disappear, and I have to kill Nautilus and let it restart in order to get them back. I expect I'm missing something important here, but I don't know where to look next.
I am using Openbox, i would like Nautilus to handle the desktop, which it does nicely, but i would like it so it draws the desktop at startup. So far the only way i have managed to do this is by adding "nautilus &" to the "autostart.sh", however, this, of course, launches an instance of the nautilus file browser.Can anyone help me to get Nautilus to draw the desktop automatically at startup without having to first launch the file manager?
View 2 Replies View RelatedHave Ubuntu booting from an external HD attached via USB. The basic tutorial is awesome but could use a push to get moving a bit quicker. I am comfortable with the DOS Dir and Windows Explorer and prefer finding files and running programs that way. Do you think I can fine Nautilus, no<g>. My new desktop shows an Example folder (icon) which I found did permit me to view files, but this seems like a peculiar route and the other icon is to Install Ubuntu. That I do not understand either because it appear installed<g>. Any explanation for these two icons on the my new desktop and explaining how to find/activate Nautilus.
View 9 Replies View RelatedStill ironing out the kinks in a new install of Fedora 12.For some reason I am not able to change the icons, colours or font size used in the Nautilus file browser. While I am able to change these settings in System>Preferences>Appearance, changes just don't affect the Nautilus file browser, which continues to use the default Fedora icons in blue and 9 pt. Sans as its font no matter what I do. On the GNOME desktop I am able to adjust fonts and sizes, but when I change the icons, settings do not stick after a reboot.
I have tried deleting the ~/.gconf/apps/nautilus directory, downgrading nautilus, even removing and reinstalling it entirely, but to no avail. Tools like gnome-color-chooser affect the panel and desktop, but just don't have any effect on the Nautilus file browser. Why?This looks to me like a permissions issue possibly? The situation could be affected by the fact that the settings in /home were inherited from a previous installation of another linux distro.
I've been searching for a while in forums about the issue I'm facing but couldn't find anything clear, or at least my net search skills are pretty lame. I'm facing a problem with prompted user password in a SSH chain connection when using authorized_keys.
I have: (1) Client - (2) Server - (3) Testing machine (testing machine is connect to Server via usb network)I've created keys for Client and Server, and updated authorized_keys in host machines with the key values: Testing machine has Server public key, and Server has Client public key.Until now everything is fine, if I try to connect via ssh the user password prompt is not shown since public key is found in authorized_keys.

Inserting any CD crashes Nautilus and all desktop Icons disappears. Eject the CD. Icons comes back and everything is fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup iptables to send web (tcp?) traffic through Squid and Privoxy transparently (to save having to setup everything per browser and hoping they honor their settings). I know I have done this before but I can't find the old config nor remember the exact options needed to do this.What I am wanting specificially is for Privoxy to grab the data as it leaves the browser, do its thing then pass it on to Squid before sending it down the line, then doing the same incoming (Privoxy -> Squid -> requesting app).

The problem is that when I open up nautilus and click the Computer icon in the toolbar (which gives the fake computer:/// address) I see two items referring to my Storage partition:
* Storage (which appears to be of "unknown type" in the properties).
* 500 GB Hard Disk: Storage (which is the one that works).
Well, as described in the title, I can't see the desktop icons, and the "show desktop" option under "gconf-editor >apps>nautilus>preferences" says it's not writable...
I tried deleting the nautilus configuration folder, and the gnome configuration folder...
I think this is the right place to post this...
I use ubuntu now and its awesome but there is one little thing that annoys me, i have looked through gconf and compiz conf and i still can't find a solution.
Its probably something really simple tho.
All it is, when i select an url, any url on any application a box pops up with the options:
open with firefox
send url
open with mozzilla
open with opera
can i stop this happening?
I'm installing Ubuntu Karmic Koala via Wubi. Tried many times, still didn't work. It said "Cannot find the ISO /ubuntu/install/installation.iso bla bla bla..."
I'm not sure why but I've reboot the computer properly. Anyone know why is this happening?
One thing, please don't say "Do a real Ubuntu installation" as I need my brother's permission first before making a partition and install it, in case of anything happen.
All wonder if someone can point me in the right direction, I have configured my system (ubuntu 10.10) to use Emerald themes and to use Compiz as my window manager. All of my compiz settings are working bar one which is Transparent menus, i.e. click on the Gnome / applications menu and it should be transparent.I have enabled opacity and set "Tooltip | Menu | PopupMenu | DropdownMenu | Normal |" and set opacity to 80, but regardless how much I shift the opacity setting it still isn't giving ma a transparent menu? I have attached a screenie showing the compiz opacity settings screen.

I am getting system freezes, but the mouse pointer still responds (moves arounf).
I suspect that it is the Sandy Bridge video. The freeze is preceded by video corruption.
How do I proceed to get this resolved and report the errors to the development people?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu on a portable harddrive so that I can use it independently of my computer (when I visit my parents or my g/f). I performed the installation using a bootable Ubuntu thumbdrive, everything went fine but when I unplugged the thumbdrive and rebooted I got a kernel panic. I was able to boot into Ubuntu on my external drive once (I think it might have been due to reordering boot order in BIOS). My guess is that the kernel panic occurs due to the drive letter changing (sdb -> sdc) depending on which external devices are plugged in, but I'm not sure how to make sure that's the case. And if it is, how would I prevent this from happening?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running 9.10 on a desktop that connects to my network using a PCMCIA wifi card plugged into a PCI cardbus adapter. Sometimes, (it seems to be when too much data has gone over the card), I lose connectivity. nm-applet still shows me connected but I can't even get to my router (ping or gui). I use ndiswrapper for the driver.
If I unplug the PCMCIA card and then plug it back in I get going again. My questions are:
1) Anyone have an idea why this might be happening?
2) Is there a way in software for me to unload and reload the wifi card?
Running Ubuntu 10.4 with happiness and Evolution both for 4 months and always have been able to 'receive' mail by pushing button listed as such; but NOW it is all greyed out. I cannot find or discover how to make it come back 'alive' , so to speak. I have not changed anything that I know of to cause this.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed ubuntu 11.04 on my HCL Me Laptop. The OS is not getting halted when I use the shut down or the restart menu from the GUI. It is not shutting down when used the commands 'sudo shut down now' or 'sudo poweroff now' or 'sudo halt now' or 'sudo init 0' also. Except when used the 'shut down' command, the command line hangs at:
init: plymouth-upstart-bridge main process (1981) terminated with status 1
checking for running unattended upgrades.
When used the 'shut down' command, the violet screen where the word ' ubuntu ' is written appears and hangs. I have updated my OS yesterday, but it is not fixing the problem. All the time I am using power button to have a forced shutdown. I loved the natty nerwhal.
Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening. I am able to start Dolphin normally either via keyboard shortcut or application launcher menu.
However if I close or exit out of the application I am then unable to open it again. Instead I get a bouncy icon and and spinning circle in the task bar and then nothing ......
Running a ps aux | grep from the CLI gives me the following processes that must be manually killed before I can reopen Dolphin.

any suggestions? I have tried disabling nepomuk and strigi thinking that might have been an issue but I still get the same problem. I also tried removing dolphinrc and dolphin from ~/.kde4/share/config and ~/.kde4/share/apps respectively... still no bueno.
I am running KDE Trunk repos on 11.3 x86_64
