Ubuntu :: Icons In Dropdowns And Customizing Nautilus Toolbar?
May 5, 2010
Not sure if this is just GNOME 2.30 removing customization ability, but I can't find how to add icons to the menu dropdowns and customize the nautilus toolbar (put text below buttons, etc) in Lucid. Is this function still there?

Does anyone know how I can move the location bar in nautilus up by the toolbar, as shown by this pic:
http://i39.tinypic.com/2qdsyll.jpg
I'd rather not have to download the source of nautilus and edit the code / compile it myself.
By the way, a guy on Ubuntu Forums thought this was a mockup. It's not. It's the regular version of Nautilus, only I removed some toolbar buttons through the /usr/share/nautilus/ui xml files.
I just want the location bar next to the toolbar to conserve screen space, and be a bit more like Finder.

I had been using Amarok 1.4 with no problems, but somehow in trying to fix the 'Launching HTTP Cache' bug, I made the Amarok toolbar icons disappear and be replaced with an image of a page. The only thing I did was install qt3-qtconfig and systemsettings, then removed them because they were not able to help me fix the HTTP cache bug, and they also altered my pointer to KDE-style. After removal and a system restart, Amarok looks like the screenshot I took. how to get the icons back?

I just recently installed Nautilus, or upgraded, from whatever was pre-installed with Ubuntu 9.10. I accidentally clicked Hide Menu toolbar, which apparently in this, there's no way to unhide it. The only thing showing now is the Sidebar, and I don't know how to get any of the toolbars back. [URL]

i have a question about customising the toolbar in the file explorer, which i think is called nautilus. i was able to add a few buttons by hacking about in /usr/share/nautilus/ui/nautilus-navigation-window-ui.xml ..but they were already defined actions. what i would really like to add is custom launchers. i have whipped up a python script that will foo and bar a glob of files in a directory, which i can pass as an argument to the script, and i would like this to be a toolbar button so i can just click an icon up there. so the launcher would need to know what directory is open in the tab which is in focus, or alternatively be able to launch from that directory as current working directory and then i can dig out the path in python. a keyboard shortcut for the launcher would be nice too

In my desktop toolbar on the right side where my running applications are shown etc. I have some problems:
1) After a while and after some messages have been shown and applications started, there is a growing gap which gets larger. When I move the mouse over the gap, I see tooltips belonging to the application to the right which is always a different one so I assume that it is a toolbar problem and no application problem.
2) Some icons are not clickable with the left mouse button, e.g. Rhythmbox. When I left click on it, nothing happens.
3) When I open the volume control with a left click, I cannot close it by clicking somewhere else. I always have to click on the "Mixer" Button to see a whole window and then I can close it.

I want to configure the spacing between the icons in toolbar in the top right tray of Natty (so it looks more like gnome 3). Does anyone know where these values are stored? I checked ccsm and gconf.

I have a server that was happily running Lenny. Last reboot was over 100 days ago. So I decided to fix it and install Squeeze.the upgrade went well, booted into grub. (with the grub2 test menus). When I login using the console, I get the nice GUI login, and something looks like the graphics world is being setup. The screen goes to a pretty light blue background. But there are no icons, no toolbars, no windows.I could believe something in the Xconfig is broken, say it thinks I have a much larger screen, and all the icons are off the edges. But that is only a guess.

The toolbar is completely empty and when I run apps or open windows, the icons do not show up. The weird thing is when I select 'Panel Properties' and UNSELECT 'expand', then it shows up. But then my toolbar shrinks and doesnt go 100% in width.

I have been working for the last three months with Ubuntu 10 on a destop. Doing just fine and loving it. I decided to try a new position for the toolbar that sits at the top of the screen. I did a right click and moved it to the right side of the scree, didn't like the look of that. Right click on the bar and moved it to the left, didn't like that either, so moved it to the bottom. having done all that I thought I could put it back at the top but alas, I can not right click on the Toolbar.
It seems as though the two bars are fighting each other at the bottom of the screen.I would like to go back to the default position at the top of the screen. I do have a terminal window available to me on the desktop so if I could find out the command line to type in, I should be able to reset my tool bar. Being new I have no idea what this command would be.

Not sure why this is happening. I've tried searching for a solution but it's not clear where I went wrong. I wasn't doing any real modifications to anything.
Attached is a picture of Nautilus not changing with one of the default themes, "High Contrast".

Installed 10.10 a couple weeks ago on my machine, and for the life of me, I can't find out where/how to remove the text from the toolbar icons in Nautilus.
There used to be an option under "Change Desktop Background", but it's no longer there. I checked gconf-editor and can't find an entry under metacity.
Any idea how to remove the text next to the toolbar icons in Gnome (nautilus) in Ubuntu 10.10?

I've been having an issue for the past several months where, when Compiz is enabled, items with tooltips will not show the tooltip when hovered over until I move the mouse slightly. To see a demonstration of this, go here. Note that this does not happen when Metacity is enabled instead of Compiz. The other part of this issue is that some dropdown menu items will not appear until I mouse over them, similarly to the problem with tooltips. You can see a brief demonstration of that in the final few seconds of the first video, but it can be seen in more detail here. Despite the title, the problem appears in both Wine and native applications.Similarly to the first problem, this issue does not occur when Metacity is enabled in place of Compiz.

I've recently acquire a new HDD and I've decided to use it for multimedia files.
So I've edited my fstab so it mounts this disk at startup.
What's more important, I've bind the folders in that disk (i.e. media/theDisk/Music) to a folder in my home directory (i.e. /home/me/Music) so I can have all the folder mounted at home (Mount the disk in /home/user is not possible because Nautilus start to whim about not being able to set some files in .nautilus or something, I believe its because it does not know which disk to save to or something like that)
So everything works fine, except for folder icons. When I open the home directory, all folders in the disk are shown with the Desktop default icon. Even if I change them (whether from home or from the mounted disk) the next time I open the home directory they are shown with the Desktop icon. Emblems are lost too.

I have installed nautilus-elementary but didn't like it. So I wanted to go back to regular nautilus but the gui items and icons are missing. Only icons left are Backward and Forward buttons. I have removed elementary repository and reinstalled the nautilus but it didn't restore the default nautilus. How can I restore it? Is there any additional packages to install?

I have a Lucid installation which I've imaged and pushed to several computers on the network at my office. The system authenticates network users with Active Directory using Kerberos, and mounts NFS shares from a Lucid server downstairs using pam_mount. It all works quite smoothly most of the time, but I get desktop icons in Gnome only on the first login. If I log out, then log in as a different user (local or network, it doesn't matter), the desktop icons are all gone. Everything else looks normal, and I can open a Nautilus window and view any location on the hard drive just as expected. If I use the run dialog or a terminal window to executekillall nautilus the icons are restored. This works whether any instance of a file browser window is open or not.
I have noticed similar, but far less consistent, behavior with gnome-panel. Every once in a while the panels will fail to appear when I log in, but I can restore them withkillall gnome-panel When I run either command, everything works fine until the next login. If I reboot the machine, I get everything back again for one login. Then the desktop icons will disappear, and I have to kill Nautilus and let it restart in order to get them back. I expect I'm missing something important here, but I don't know where to look next.

I am using Openbox, i would like Nautilus to handle the desktop, which it does nicely, but i would like it so it draws the desktop at startup. So far the only way i have managed to do this is by adding "nautilus &" to the "autostart.sh", however, this, of course, launches an instance of the nautilus file browser. Can anyone help me to get Nautilus to draw the desktop automatically at startup without having to first launch the file manager?
