Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening. I am able to start Dolphin normally either via keyboard shortcut or application launcher menu.
However if I close or exit out of the application I am then unable to open it again. Instead I get a bouncy icon and and spinning circle in the task bar and then nothing ......
Running a ps aux | grep from the CLI gives me the following processes that must be manually killed before I can reopen Dolphin.

any suggestions? I have tried disabling nepomuk and strigi thinking that might have been an issue but I still get the same problem. I also tried removing dolphinrc and dolphin from ~/.kde4/share/config and ~/.kde4/share/apps respectively... still no bueno.

I use ubuntu now and its awesome but there is one little thing that annoys me, i have looked through gconf and compiz conf and i still can't find a solution.
Its probably something really simple tho.
All it is, when i select an url, any url on any application a box pops up with the options:
open with firefox
send url
open with mozzilla
open with opera
can i stop this happening?
I'm installing Ubuntu Karmic Koala via Wubi. Tried many times, still didn't work. It said "Cannot find the ISO /ubuntu/install/installation.iso bla bla bla..."
I'm not sure why but I've reboot the computer properly. Anyone know why is this happening?
One thing, please don't say "Do a real Ubuntu installation" as I need my brother's permission first before making a partition and install it, in case of anything happen.
All wonder if someone can point me in the right direction, I have configured my system (ubuntu 10.10) to use Emerald themes and to use Compiz as my window manager. All of my compiz settings are working bar one which is Transparent menus, i.e. click on the Gnome / applications menu and it should be transparent.I have enabled opacity and set "Tooltip | Menu | PopupMenu | DropdownMenu | Normal |" and set opacity to 80, but regardless how much I shift the opacity setting it still isn't giving ma a transparent menu? I have attached a screenie showing the compiz opacity settings screen.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 2 pty devices (/dev/ptya0 -master & /dev/ttya0 -slave). i am able to open both devices. Both devices file descriptor is same. i am writing to master pty but while reading from the slave its not reading.

I am getting system freezes, but the mouse pointer still responds (moves arounf).
I suspect that it is the Sandy Bridge video. The freeze is preceded by video corruption.
How do I proceed to get this resolved and report the errors to the development people?
I am using select to read the data from socket. on a load of 25 req per second, for some req i am getting the timeout in select (returning zero), but i am able to see the data on TCP using wireshark. kindly suggest what could be the possible reasons.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu on a portable harddrive so that I can use it independently of my computer (when I visit my parents or my g/f). I performed the installation using a bootable Ubuntu thumbdrive, everything went fine but when I unplugged the thumbdrive and rebooted I got a kernel panic. I was able to boot into Ubuntu on my external drive once (I think it might have been due to reordering boot order in BIOS). My guess is that the kernel panic occurs due to the drive letter changing (sdb -> sdc) depending on which external devices are plugged in, but I'm not sure how to make sure that's the case. And if it is, how would I prevent this from happening?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running 9.10 on a desktop that connects to my network using a PCMCIA wifi card plugged into a PCI cardbus adapter. Sometimes, (it seems to be when too much data has gone over the card), I lose connectivity. nm-applet still shows me connected but I can't even get to my router (ping or gui). I use ndiswrapper for the driver.
If I unplug the PCMCIA card and then plug it back in I get going again. My questions are:
1) Anyone have an idea why this might be happening?
2) Is there a way in software for me to unload and reload the wifi card?
Running Ubuntu 10.4 with happiness and Evolution both for 4 months and always have been able to 'receive' mail by pushing button listed as such; but NOW it is all greyed out. I cannot find or discover how to make it come back 'alive' , so to speak. I have not changed anything that I know of to cause this.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed ubuntu 11.04 on my HCL Me Laptop. The OS is not getting halted when I use the shut down or the restart menu from the GUI. It is not shutting down when used the commands 'sudo shut down now' or 'sudo poweroff now' or 'sudo halt now' or 'sudo init 0' also. Except when used the 'shut down' command, the command line hangs at:
init: plymouth-upstart-bridge main process (1981) terminated with status 1
checking for running unattended upgrades.
When used the 'shut down' command, the violet screen where the word ' ubuntu ' is written appears and hangs. I have updated my OS yesterday, but it is not fixing the problem. All the time I am using power button to have a forced shutdown. I loved the natty nerwhal.
Yesterday I had a huge amount of updates, including things like the Kernel, Mesa, and video driver (xf86-video-ati). Now my monitors are all messed up! When I booted, I found that the characters are much smaller and higher resolution in command line mode.
Then when I started X, my two monitors are swapped! The taskbar is on the right, secondary monitor, and I move the mouse off the right edge of the right monitor into the left edge of the left monitor.

I am trying to learn how to pass more than a one-command startup for gnome-terminal.
I will give an example of what I'm trying to do here:

However, running with the -g option to invoke gnome-terminal, I get a "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal" error.
This same error occurs if the gnome-terminal line is changed to

Is there any way to pass more than one command on to gnome-terminal? I have tried various single and double quoting senarios and in a final attempt, I abstracted to an exported function all to no avail. Perhaps even though gnome-term is better at many things than xterm, xterm trumps it in this instance.
I am writing a perl script which uses the matlab compiler to compile a .m file.
I am using the system("mcc �m file.m"). I have matlab installed and both script and exe are in the same drive.But i get the following error .
'mcc' is not a recognised as an internal or external command ,operable in program or batch file.
I am using gtk to program GUI. How can I show the output of shell command into a textbox, ex ps -efc command ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Ubuntu Karmic running system experiences random lockups. There is no pattern in when it will happen, it can go for days without one, or happen every couple hours. Only thing I can notice is that it happens most often when I run Firefox, but when it happens, it happens regardless of me having Firefox open on a website with lots of Flash content or not. When the lockup happens, I cannot move the mouse - the led light on my mouse shuts off, I can't move the cursor, the whole UI becomes unrensponsive, there is no blinking lights on the keyboard, REISUB does not work, only hitting the reset button on my case helps. After reboot, there are no indications of errors in any of the logs that I can see.I have ran memtest for 24 hours, and it completed without errors.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have set up a server with Ubuntu 10.4. It always worked fine with 32-bit inside VMware. But on the production machine with 64-bit, it wasn't working well by now. I could now reliably trace the problem down to the "ubuntu-desktop" package. I have installed it (without the recommends) so all its depends are also installed. But as soon as that package is on the system, it freezes at boot time, on the page where CPU freq modules or AppArmor stuff is started. My server is an Intel Core i7, so it lists 8 CPUs for cpufreq. They're normally all listed in a line on their own, but when the system freezes here, the output is broken already. Sometimes it says that cupsd is started, or "Checking quotas", sometimes it stops after "CPU4", sometimes it prints out the lines "CPU0" to "CPU4", then "CPU7" in the same line followed by "[OK]". The system won't react on anything from then on except a hard reset.
As soon as I remove the package "ubuntu-desktop" (chrooted into the system from the rescue system), the OS on disk boots normally into the GUI logon. No problem at all anymore.
It took me a few days to figure out why it wasn't working. I first suspected quota, then a kernel upgrade. But the system booted well after each change on their own. Just as I installed all the graphical stuff, it stopped booting.
What's happening there? What am I supposed to to now? I need the desktop environment and the machine must be working by Saturday. Although the description of ubuntu-desktop says that I should not uninstall it because it's used for update management, I could now install it to get all its depends, and then immediately uninstall it to make the system boot up again. Is that a good idea? Shouldn't it be working without such hacks?
Is there a command which can be used to run some other command on a few lines from a file or an o/p of some file. (the kind of role that -exec option does for the find command). (I have solved the purpose using a bash loop but would like to know if there exists a command).
