I'm trying to figure out how to edit the colours,I would love to make all of Nautilus some shade of green, and the icons too, and the bit there the panel shades the selected app white.
View 1 RepliesStill ironing out the kinks in a new install of Fedora 12.For some reason I am not able to change the icons, colours or font size used in the Nautilus file browser. While I am able to change these settings in System>Preferences>Appearance, changes just don't affect the Nautilus file browser, which continues to use the default Fedora icons in blue and 9 pt. Sans as its font no matter what I do. On the GNOME desktop I am able to adjust fonts and sizes, but when I change the icons, settings do not stick after a reboot.
I have tried deleting the ~/.gconf/apps/nautilus directory, downgrading nautilus, even removing and reinstalling it entirely, but to no avail. Tools like gnome-color-chooser affect the panel and desktop, but just don't have any effect on the Nautilus file browser. Why?This looks to me like a permissions issue possibly? The situation could be affected by the fact that the settings in /home were inherited from a previous installation of another linux distro.
I use Ubuntu Karmic 9.10, been trying to change the font colour with regards to time/date, and the 'Applications, Places and System' buttons, along with the wireless network, battery life, volume control and the indicator applet. I have it as 100% transparent because I prefer that look and feel about it, but I can't find the controls to change the colour of the text etc on the pannel..
View 6 Replies View RelatedI finally have a working nautilus after weeks experiencing a seg fault caused by a dependency problem which I have only now managed to resolve.
It came right after doing this:

I then removed nautilus-elementary ppa and downgraded the nautilus-data.
Problem is the nautilus I get is extremely minimal -- really just a window -- which insists on opening new windows whenever I click on a folder.

I've tried removing .nautilus on several occasions.
What are the default settings?
Is there a more convenient way of editing nautilus?
Striks me this has something to do with settings gconf. I'm going to play around and see if any of them fix this creature.
In windows when I install gvim/vim, it automatically installs a context menu in explorer that lets me edit a file in gvim by simply right clicking and pressing v. For someone who edits a lot of files and is really used to vim, it is super-convenient. I want to do the same thing in nautilus. So I installed nautilus-actions and added to the context menu of editing with gvim. That wasn't hard. The hard part is getting that keyboard key to bind to that context menu item. Currently when I right click and press v, it sends the item to trash. I want it such that when I right click a file and press v, it edits the file in gvim. How can I do that? I want a good solution, and am willing to switch file managers/window managers if need be. This particular shortcut key is very important to my user experience.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 in which I had connected to the internet by way of terminal (pppoeconf) and I could access any site with ease.But one fine day suddenly I could not access the net, I try to locate the notification icon (network manager),but could not find it.I did this and that,googled it trying to find the solution but alas to my disappointment I had to format it.
After reinstallation of Ubuntu I connect the internet by way of editing connection on panel and i could access the net. The problem is that I could not access some site especially org site e.g Home - Desiring God so can anybody guide me in how to connect in most better way.
Not sure why this is happening. I've tried searching for a solution but it's not clear where I went wrong. I wasn't doing any real modifications to anything.

Installed 10.10 a couple weeks ago on my machine, and for the life of me, I can't find out where/how to remove the text from the toolbar icons in Nautilus.
There used to be an option under "Change Desktop Background", but it's no longer there. I checked gconf-editor and can't find an entry under metacity.
Any idea how to remove the text next to the toolbar icons in Gnome (nautilus) in Ubuntu 10.10?
Not sure if this is just GNOME 2.30 removing customization ability, but I can't find how to add icons to the menu dropdowns and customize the nautilus toolbar (put text below buttons, etc) in Lucid. Is this function still there?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've recently acquire a new HDD and I've decided to use it for multimedia files.
So I've edited my fstab so it mounts this disk at startup.
What's more important, I've bind the folders in that disk (i.e. media/theDisk/Music) to a folder in my home directory (i.e. /home/me/Music) so I can have all the folder mounted at home (Mount the disk in /home/user is not possible because Nautilus start to whim about not being able to set some files in .nautilus or something, I believe its because it does not know which disk to save to or something like that)
So everything works fine, except for folder icons. When I open the home directory, all folders in the disk are shown with the Desktop default icon. Even if I change them (whether from home or from the mounted disk) the next time I open the home directory they are shown with the Desktop icon. Emblems are lost too.
I installed the elementary theme and played with it. Unfortunately, I accidentally remove the icons in the file manager. Refer to attached image.How will I display the icons, menus and address bar again?

Unlike ubuntu on xubuntu I am not able to add additional icons to the top panel. I wanted to add icons to start Open Office Writer and terminal but for some reason I can't.I right clicked on an app (icon) to add it to the panel but that does not work.I clicked on an app (icon) and tried to move it to the panel. Only icons left are Backward and Forward buttons. I have removed elementary repository and reinstalled the nautilus but it didn't restore the default nautilus. How can I restore it? View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Lucid installation which I've imaged and pushed to several computers on the network at my office. The system authenticates network users with Active Directory using Kerberos, and mounts NFS shares from a Lucid server downstairs using pam_mount. It all works quite smoothly most of the time, but I get desktop icons in Gnome only on the first login. If I log out, then log in as a different user (local or network, it doesn't matter), the desktop icons are all gone. Everything else looks normal, and I can open a Nautilus window and view any location on the hard drive just as expected. If I use the run dialog or a terminal window to executekillall nautilus the icons are restored. This works whether any instance of a file browser window is open or not.
I have noticed similar, but far less consistent, behavior with gnome-panel. Every once in a while the panels will fail to appear when I log in, but I can restore them withkillall gnome-panel When I run either command, everything works fine until the next login. If I reboot the machine, I get everything back again for one login. Then the desktop icons will disappear, and I have to kill Nautilus and let it restart in order to get them back. I expect I'm missing something important here, but I don't know where to look next.
I am using Openbox, i would like Nautilus to handle the desktop, which it does nicely, but i would like it so it draws the desktop at startup. So far the only way i have managed to do this is by adding "nautilus &" to the "autostart.sh", however, this, of course, launches an instance of the nautilus file browser.Can anyone help me to get Nautilus to draw the desktop automatically at startup without having to first launch the file manager?
View 2 Replies View RelatedHave Ubuntu booting from an external HD attached via USB. The basic tutorial is awesome but could use a push to get moving a bit quicker. I am comfortable with the DOS Dir and Windows Explorer and prefer finding files and running programs that way. Do you think I can fine Nautilus, no<g>. My new desktop shows an Example folder (icon) which I found did permit me to view files, but this seems like a peculiar route and the other icon is to Install Ubuntu. That I do not understand either because it appear installed<g>. Any explanation for these two icons on the my new desktop and explaining how to find/activate Nautilus.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed 10.04 on my laptop and spent some time configuring it. A while ago I've noticed that there are now two battery icons in the panel in the top-right corner. One seems to be attached to the indicator applet and the other one sits by itself. Changing the settings in the Power Management menu affects both icons in the same way (I can either show or hide them both). Is there any way to remove the extra icon and just keep the one integrated into the indicator?
This is a very minor annoyance really, but it'd still be nice if there was a fix for it.
Update: Now the battery icon in the indicator applet has changed to the chat "evelope" icon, but it still acts as a battery icon (same menu). Something is definitely not right here...
I have two icons on the far right of my top panel that have no "Move menu item". I would like to move them so that they are more to the left and the search is first on right followed by the time/date and everything else after that. One icon is Dropbox and the other is my wireless signal icon. How do I move these icons? There is no lock to panel or move menu item.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32Bit on my Dell Inspiron B130 Laptop, and it works great, way faster then windows XP which was pre-installed on the machine. Everything worked out of the box except for the Wireless but after some reading I was able to get it to work by plugging it in to the wired connection. but anyway the problem I'm having is that it seems like after a few days of use ubuntu starts to act up, things become out of place and not work. this even happens with Linux Mint also. By acting up I mean, Icons start to disappear in the panel, my wireless connection starts to stop working and the only way to keep it on is to either log off and try to log in using KDE instead of GNOME. or open terminal and do the command nm-appt or something someone on the chat told me to do to try and get my wireless icon working.

This happens very randomly. As you can see by the times, both of those were taken on the same day. I logged out and logged back in, and it look fine.

The notification icons (sound, net activity, clock, etc) and a few other icons (trash, desktop) appear to retain the default background. Looks kind of funky. View 3 Replies View RelatedFirst user, everything still normal. All other users and any added users basically have no desktop now. Background and arrow are there, but no right-click no panels. Have tried every option in other similar posts including deleting .config, .gnome2, etc files. Also tried all the commands at URL..I can login user with xterm session and launch gnome-panel, which provides some functionality, but this basically sucks, because there is no window manager. I have tried changing themes and various compiz stuff, but no success yet. Even removed and reinstalled compiz.
