Dec 11, 2010I am having some trouble with usb flash drive lately:when plugging in: all nautilus windows close all icons disappear from the desktop but reappear seconds later after a couple of seconds of high cpu usage I can open a new nautilus windows and the drive is properly mounted.I have apport enabled: once in a while there is apport running and trying to gather a report which cannot be sent because it is an assert failure.. once in a blue moon apport gives me the not-enough-memory error message (screenshot here) but I don't think it should need more than 400MB I had at that moment.dmesg gives this..:

Mar 25, 2011EVERY SINGLE TIME when I try to close the Nautilus File Browser (ie when I go to my Documents folder), the desktop flashes all the icons on the desktop a couple of times (for a sec you would see no icons on the desktop) before everything goes back to normal.

Aug 24, 2010I have a Lucid installation which I've imaged and pushed to several computers on the network at my office. The system authenticates network users with Active Directory using Kerberos, and mounts NFS shares from a Lucid server downstairs using pam_mount. It all works quite smoothly most of the time, but I get desktop icons in Gnome only on the first login. If I log out, then log in as a different user (local or network, it doesn't matter), the desktop icons are all gone. Everything else looks normal, and I can open a Nautilus window and view any location on the hard drive just as expected. If I use the run dialog or a terminal window to executekillall nautilus the icons are restored. This works whether any instance of a file browser window is open or not.
I have noticed similar, but far less consistent, behavior with gnome-panel. Every once in a while the panels will fail to appear when I log in, but I can restore them withkillall gnome-panel When I run either command, everything works fine until the next login. If I reboot the machine, I get everything back again for one login. Then the desktop icons will disappear, and I have to kill Nautilus and let it restart in order to get them back. I expect I'm missing something important here, but I don't know where to look next.

Mar 7, 2011I am using Openbox, i would like Nautilus to handle the desktop, which it does nicely, but i would like it so it draws the desktop at startup. So far the only way i have managed to do this is by adding "nautilus &" to the "autostart.sh", however, this, of course, launches an instance of the nautilus file browser.Can anyone help me to get Nautilus to draw the desktop automatically at startup without having to first launch the file manager?

May 21, 2011Have Ubuntu booting from an external HD attached via USB. The basic tutorial is awesome but could use a push to get moving a bit quicker. I am comfortable with the DOS Dir and Windows Explorer and prefer finding files and running programs that way. Do you think I can fine Nautilus, no<g>. My new desktop shows an Example folder (icon) which I found did permit me to view files, but this seems like a peculiar route and the other icon is to Install Ubuntu. That I do not understand either because it appear installed<g>. Any explanation for these two icons on the my new desktop and explaining how to find/activate Nautilus.

Jan 31, 2011I have an external CD/DVD usb drive and as soon as I insert a disk (I've tried both CD and DVD), the drive icon disappears (unmounts?).I thought it was a bus power issue because it is a mini laptop (Asus Eee PC). This small/slim external drive has two USB cables, one for power and one for power/data. So, I plugged the power cable into my nearby Windows desktop computer and just the power/data into the Ubuntu PC.

May 1, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit and every time I try to add a folder to syncronize with ubuntu one in nautilus, it crashes nautilus. I can then start nautilus up again and do the same thing, and again it will crash.

Fedora :: F13 Crashes On Half Of Boots / Resolve This?
Jun 12, 2010Hello everyone. I switched over to Fedora a little while ago, maybe a month or two, towards the end of when 12 was out. 12 ran just fine, but around when I upgraded to 13 I started experiencing issues. I first upgraded by switching repositories and installing via yum, which seemed to run fine for awhile. However, came to the point where about every other boot (a little more often, actually), the system would crash at the login screen, not allowing me to login. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace or other rescue keys don't work- in fact, if the mouse is still working, they freeze the pointer as well.
Finally I decided to get the 13 DVD and re-install. Downloaded, media checked out, ran the install... and I'm still having the same issues. I know I should be providing more info here, but I'm not sure what log files to look for and post here. A few notes of relevance are that I've tried changing the ACPI settings in my BIOS to be as compatible as possible, and also tried booting using noacpi, which doesn't seem to be fixing it- I also have Nouveau installed.
So, what should I do? Anything I need to provide to help troubleshoot, I'll gladly do.

I can set the desktop background; however, when I switch from one workspace to another, the background disappears from all workspaces! I have six workspaces, and clicking on anyone of them makes the background disappear.

Aug 7, 2011Sometimes after I reboot, by desktop background is just a black screen. When I go to the settings folder, it shows the image that it previously was, but i have to change either the "zoom" or "tile" settings, or just change the image in order for it to reappear. I really have no idea why this happens, and certainly does not happen with every reboot. If it helps, I am using Intel Ironlake Mobile.

Dec 1, 2009Still ironing out the kinks in a new install of Fedora 12.For some reason I am not able to change the icons, colours or font size used in the Nautilus file browser. While I am able to change these settings in System>Preferences>Appearance, changes just don't affect the Nautilus file browser, which continues to use the default Fedora icons in blue and 9 pt. Sans as its font no matter what I do. On the GNOME desktop I am able to adjust fonts and sizes, but when I change the icons, settings do not stick after a reboot.
I have tried deleting the ~/.gconf/apps/nautilus directory, downgrading nautilus, even removing and reinstalling it entirely, but to no avail. Tools like gnome-color-chooser affect the panel and desktop, but just don't have any effect on the Nautilus file browser. Why?This looks to me like a permissions issue possibly? The situation could be affected by the fact that the settings in /home were inherited from a previous installation of another linux distro.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cusor Disappears After Upgrade To 10.4 / Resolve This?
May 16, 2010I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 after kernel upgrade.
The pointer is visible at the login screen, but after I login, it disappears. Never had any problems with earlier distributions.
I was still able to figure out where it was because of the hover effects (you know, the brightness change of a button or link when you hover your mouse over it) and quicky changed the settings in System>Preferences>Mouse to show where the mouse is when I pressed ctl key.
I can get the cursor to be visible by sudo lshw -c display, but that is only temporary. If I reboot I have to do that again.
This is the information I get when I do lshw -c display code...
I'm running this on an old Dell Optiplex GX260 with onboard video.
Anybody have any ideas on how to make the pointer show up on a more permanent basis?
Also, it seems screensavers are giving me problems as well when they never used to. They just blank my screen and I have to reboot.

Jul 8, 2010I'm really new to opensuse, and linux in general. I started using 11.2 in may and I'm still having trouble. I started it on a newly refurbished HP Pavillion. It's always seemed to run slow, freezes up when I plug in my external hard drive, won't play music on amarok or it will lag, things like that. When I run it in windows everything works fine. and it has always ran really hot and loud when in opensuse.
To make things worse, lately if I open mozilla, all the programs/windows I have open will disappear, all my tabs will disappear, all the icons on my desktop disappear and my application launcher, clock, etc, all disappear. when i manually shut it down and restart it works fine for a while. I keep trying to find things online but I've got to the point where I'm afraid to mess it up more.

The problem is system tray icons disappears/rearranges automatically but the biggest issue is that NetworkManager applet icon disappears and somehow internet stops working every now and then...Is there any way to "weld" NetworkManager etc icons to the Gnome Panel/taskbar ? so that they can not be removed without entering the password?

Jun 13, 2011Recently i have upgraded from Fedora 14 to 15 formating the system partition and reinstalling. Nearly evrithing was flawless, but when i copied my old home directory the images of some of the launchers i have on the desktop are invisible.I use kde 4 with the activity show folder running pointing to the desktop folder. The icons missing are windows programs installed with wine. I copied the icons from one installation to another. I also tried to manually set the icon copying it to a different location and modifying de .desktop.

Dec 10, 2010I already posted on the compiz community forums but I figure more eyes are better than less. I hope the "software" forum is the right place to post, I don't believe I'm having any hardware issues.What I'm seeing is strange desktop corruption/stretching when compiz starts, almost as if compiz thinks my desktop is about four time wider (horizontal) than it really is and this makes nautilus go a bit crazy. All other compiz functionality seems fine. Before compiz starts (with metacity or openbox), the desktop (nautilus) appears normal. I've tried both settings for show_desktop in gconf and they both result in the same (bad) effect. If I use a gradient as my background instead of an image, I see that the gradient is also wrong in the same way (wider than it should be).
Attached are two screen shots: streched-small.jpeg is my desktop with compiz and normal-small.jpeg is the same desktop after running "metacity --replace".I have a dual head setup with an ATI X18000 running two identical monitors, both at 1280x1024. This problem does NOT happen if I disable one of the display or clone them nor does it happen if I place one monitor on top of the other. The problem only occurs in dual head mode and only if the monitors are logically positioned side by side, horizontally.I don't think it factors in but it's worth mentioning I'm doing this with an LTSP 5 thin client configuration. My thin client just happens to be a PC with an X1800 at the moment.
