View 1 RepliesI would like to use my laptop at home, where I don't have internet access (don't ask, long story). My question are two-fold;
** How do I prevent various pieces of software trying to access the net for updates etc. I presume they are likely to hang, lock up, and generally cause trouble.
** Can anyone recommend a working practice for installing updates and/or new software, either from USB or CDROM/DVD? I have good (legitimate!) access to assorted computer facilities at my office. I am using 11.04
I run openSUSE 11.2 (kernel 2.6.31.12) and I use Wine 1.1.38 to play World of Warcraft from the konsole terminal application. For the most part this works okay, but there is one small issue that continues to annoy me:
Look at your keyboard (assuming standard QWERTY no-name keyboard) - see the key just left of your Backspace key? That key is only partially working for me in WoW. I cannot bind it to any action bar button in-game, with or without addons enabled. For some reason the key works fine when entering text into the chat console though.
I have used xev to get a bit of data on the key itself - not that it is that informative to me though, but the absence of the issue when playing WoW through Windows would suggest that it is somehow endemic to my Linux configuration:
Code:
KeyPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x4a00001,
root 0x1a7, subw 0x0, time 6474080, (159,-10), root:(1364,15),
state 0x10, keycode 21 (keysym 0xfe51, dead_acute), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 2 bytes: (c2 b4) ""
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: True

I need files to be <= 5GB to put on S3. Right now I have an ugly tar / gzip / cut before upload, then cat / zcat / tar on download, but it's really ugly - and nearly every archiver should support archive splitting right? What's the best way?

I tried three versions of linux:
1)9.10
2)10.04

My PCI wireless card was working ONLY on 9.10. Why? I would like to update to newest version, but i cannot imagine my life without internet connection.
According to firestarter, there's some process on my machine that keeps trying to access port 1900, every two minutes exactly. I don't know what it is. I've tried netstat -tnlp, but it doesn't show up. Presumably I have to do it at the exact second the process is trying to access the port. Does anyone know of a bash subroutine that will keep doing netstat -pl until it finds a process on port 1900?
View 4 Replies View RelatedUsually to view individual cpu % we press '1' in the interactive mode of top.
However I am not able to figure out the logic to get the same output in batch mode i.e,
top -n1b
I am redirecting this output to a file to view it later and stuff like that, so I need the batch mode. Is it possible? Installing a separate tool for this is not gonna be possible.
I'm looking for an option that I am missing or some way to capture the output.
We have quite a few SEO clients who require multiple IPs which are all from different class c allocations. (10 - 50 IPs) used for projects lasting weeks to months at a time. Since we don't have connected IPs in ranges we can't use the range scripts but I don't know of a way to easily add a long list of individual IPs. These are CentOS servers, by the way

View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like have a script that can monitor my flac folder and everytime I rip a new cd to flac I would like the script to make a new folder with mp3 files @320 bit and place the newly created folder with mp3's into a folder named mp3. This is my very first script but after reading up on linuxcommand.org I discovered the power of scripts. Maybe there already exsist such a script for all I know?
Where would be a good place to search/look for templates that I can tailor to meet my needs? Also I would like to hear good suggestions for other repetitive tasks people solve with the use of scripts, that way I can easier see what else I can dig into. Can scripts also be used to manipulate databases? For instance to every day search for top 50 of certain met criteria, or whatever else output one is looking for?
I have captured a file in my linux showing logs captured from many modules concurrently. Please find attached a sample of the file. As you see, there are logs from individual modules that have been captured concurrently. For example, there are logs from IPTR,SNMP,HLR,TCAP,XAPP,and SCCP modules but they are coming concurrently. Each log has the header name of its accompanied module in the beginning. I need to have the log of each modules separately. Can you please show me the power of linux on how to separate individual module's logs from the whole?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there's any resource that explains how to use w3m. I checked the man page but this just lists the startup options. I also did some google searches but couldn't find anything useful. I was able to find bits and pieces of info on different sites (e.g. how to enter a URL, how to go back a page, etc.) but there was no site that had all this sort of information in one place.

The left one is under a <DIV ALIGN="LEFT"></DIV> and the right one <DIV ALIGN="RIGHT"></DIV>. Unfortunately they don't line up on screen - the left "Previous page" text is one line higher than the "Next page" link - I tried putting in a <NOBR> tag between them but it didn't work - can someone tell me what to do?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently (and accidentally) wiped a hard-drive which should NOT have been formatted. PhotoRec was able to recover some of the most important files from the disk.
Part of those files include a large music collection of flac files. I've placed these in a folder named 'FLAC' that looks like this:
[Start of FLAC Folder]
f11655088.flac
f11698672.flac
... (around 2,000 files total)
f291142600.flac
[End of FLAC Folder]
I'm running a livecd to rescue this data. I have access to a standard terminal in Ubuntu 10.10. I've noticed that the music player in linux will display the song title when I open any of these songs.
My goal is to automatically extract the song title from these files and update their names from f12313512.flac to 'Libera - Rebirth.flac'

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have ~200 c files in my makefile[$(SRCS)], and it compiles all of the files using a single gcc command. So each time I make a change in one c file, it ends up re-compiling all the files, then linking to make the

My current Makefile looks like this.

I have a database (Mysql) with records of our club members. It is quite small only about 300 records. Unfortunately there are gaps in the information and I would like to be able to print out (two records to an A4 sheet) the records in form format so that I can pass these to the members who will fill in any blanks in the record.
If it is not possible to do what I want from the database I can convert the records to a spreadsheet and do it from there.

View 3 Replies View RelatedFor about 3-4 weeks, my file system used space was growing and growing. After some days, I decided to analyze the file system in order to understand what is going on. Well, the results returned that the log files at /var/log ( especially kern.log, syslog and messages ) were the log files that were sucking the free space. I searched if this was some kind of bug but it turned out that if these files are growing, the problem is in the records.
So I picked from the tail of the messages log the last 50 lines and I saw this:

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 in a Samsung R510. I've tried to record sound with an external microphone and there have always been a permanent noise accompanying it.I thought it could be the internal microphone, that's causing the noise, but even when I disabled it the noise remains. Or maybe I didn't disable it the right way !
