Ubuntu :: Got The Impression That The Code Used In The Recorded Macro Is Slightly Different?

Mar 24, 2011

I tried ubuntu 10.0 yesterday (running from my usb pen) and I liked it. A lot. However, there are a few issues that i need to know if there's any way to solve them, before making the transition: Keyboard keys are swapped; I mean, if I press alt+(anyNumber) I get another character. Why does this happen?-I develop a lot of code in VBA; I tried to record a macro using Open Office Calc, but I got the impression that the code used in the recorded macro is slightly different.

Ubuntu Networking :: Too Much Traffic Recorded On /var/log/messages?

Apr 19, 2011

For about 3-4 weeks, my file system used space was growing and growing. After some days, I decided to analyze the file system in order to understand what is going on. Well, the results returned that the log files at /var/log ( especially kern.log, syslog and messages ) were the log files that were sucking the free space. I searched if this was some kind of bug but it turned out that if these files are growing, the problem is in the records.

So I picked from the tail of the messages log the last 50 lines and I saw this:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Having Noise In Recorded Sound?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 in a Samsung R510. I've tried to record sound with an external microphone and there have always been a permanent noise accompanying it.I thought it could be the internal microphone, that's causing the noise, but even when I disabled it the noise remains. Or maybe I didn't disable it the right way !

It happened yesterday and a few moments ago.My question is that I want to troubleshoot this myself and wonder if the activities that my system were running just prior to crashing are recorded in a log file somewhere.I used to look int /var/log.messages or /var/log/boot, but this was in the Maverick days.

Is there any way to adjust the hue for the driver in real time(I don't want to have to change values in Xorg.conf the stop x, restart x and see if it worked). For example the proprietary nvidia drivers have the color settings in nvidia-settings.

General :: General Impression Of Certain Distros?

Jul 16, 2010

What is the general opinion of the Mandriva and Debian distros? Mainly asking what kind of user you consider the distro to be for (beginners, advanced, total newb, whatever), and whether you think they offer as much to an extremely experienced user as they would to a newb. Those are my two favorite distros, and I really like Mandriva a lot. I'm trying to pick one to stick with throughout, but I'm not really sure if Mandriva is too automated and Windows-user oriented like Ubuntu (I haven't really delved into the deeper aspects of Linux so I have zero experience in this area now). This might sound a little elitist but I don't want to be using Mandriva and just be automatically dismissed as a newb on first impression just because I'm using Mandriva (although admittedly I am a bit of a newb at the moment, I don't plan on staying one).

Programming :: Difference In Time Recorded By Clock_gettime() And TSC?

Jan 24, 2011

I want to measure the time it takes to execute a C function. The question is which is the best method to record time. After a lot of searching online, I found two ways [URL]:

a. using clock_gettime(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &t)
b. using TSC

I call the C function 50 times (recording the time it takes for each call). The average is found only for the last 35 calls.

Using (a), I get:

48345 us
28350 us
28379 us
27716 us

[code]....

Average time for the last 35 loops: 121450.47 microseconds

Using (b), I get:

48130 cycles
28726 cycles
28820 cycles
27421 cycles

[code]....

Average for the last 35 loops: 27236.66 cycles What could be causing the strange value of 3322259 us in method (a)? I could just use method (b) but I would like to know what is going on here... Btw, I am using a desktop - with Linux debian 2.6.26 #1 SMP.

Ubuntu :: Update - 3D - Dragging The Unity Launcher Up/down Looks Slightly Jittery Too

Jul 27, 2011

Running 11.04 64bit. AMD Radeon HD 6450 with proprietary drivers.

This is a new PC that I got a few weeks ago. Up until tonight, there have never been any issues. I earlier had an update for dbus and dbus-x11 which prompted me to reboot. After rebooting, I am noticing some mild to severe problems when gaming.

It's like there's a jitter, yet the ingame fps (frames per second) is normal. Window dragging on the desktop looks fine, but dragging the unity launcher up/down looks slightly jittery too.

Thinking it was just some sort of Unity/compiz problem, I booted into Classic desktop with no effects. Issue still persists.

Really want to fix this, as it's a pretty annoying issue =/

I realized it seems to have caused issues with scrolling too. Scrolling does not look smooth and is also jittery.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Play Back Considerably Faster Than They Were Recorded?

Aug 13, 2010

I'm trying to record video off my webcam, and tried two different programs - cheese and wxcam.

I honestly didn't have much luck with cheese - it seemed to work fine, but when it came time to record video, the frame rate dropped to a ridiculous level, making the video completely unusable. I could wave my arm in front of the camera, and it might pick up one frame of that.

Moving on, I tried wxcam, which I like a lot.. however, when I record video with the xvid compression, they play back considerably faster than they were recorded.

Fedora Hardware :: Slightly Different Nvidia Sound?

Jun 20, 2010

I just installed the nvidia drivers and everything looks much nicer but. All my sound works fine, except when I try and get the bell sound (I've not tried others) from the terminal. This is kind of annoying because I want irssi to alert me when I get messages, otherwise I probably would never have noticed.

I really don't know how this could have caused that, but it was working before, isn't now and there does seem to be a lot of reports online of people's sound breaking after installing the nvidia drivers so...

Ok, now that I tried a different set of keywords I realise that this problem seems to have been had by a few other people and is occurs when compiz is on. I'm still not sure I understand it and I don't yet have a solution. :/

Software :: Can't Figure Out To Do Slightly More Difficult Equations?

I've tried incrementally building the equation (starting with 7^(x) = 2, then moving to 7^(-4*x) = 2, etc.)but when I introduce the second x, I get a blank output. I have no idea what to do.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: 11.3 - Recorded Sound Slow Speed

Sep 6, 2010

I have recently installed OpenSUSE 11.3. I can play audio files, but there is a problem recording, namely the recording is way too slow. This was tried 3 ways: in Audacity, in Skype (making a test call), and using the arecord command in a console, as root. To make the playback sound normal, I tried taking the already-recorded file and speeding it up in Audacity. It was necessary to speed up the recording by 50%. I've tried updating alsa and other suggestions which I could figure out, and run the scripts for diagnostic information. BTW, I'm using a headset plugged in to standard 1/8 inch mic and speaker jacks, not a USB headset.

Fedora Networking :: No Network On Slightly Older Machine

Jul 8, 2010

I have been out of the linux game for a few years and decided to get back into it, I've been working now for a few days on figuring out why my machine's network card does not seem to want to work on a new FC13 installation. The machine is an older Dell Dimension with an 2.53 Gig Celeron Processor, 512 Megs of RAM (A gig soon) and the ethernet card is an Intel Corporation 82562EZ. Sone generic thing, though FC13 does recognize and appears to have appropriate software.

ifconfig shows no IP address in the x.x.x.x sense, and restarting the network doesn't seem to do anything. The network card is in working order, I tested it in a winxp installation, and the cable is also functioning.

Networking :: Slightly Higher Level Traffic Logging

Mar 19, 2011

Summary: Several school networks in need of a fairly low-level way to log network use, especially Internet. Raw packet captures are too low (and big). Turnkey solutions we've looked at (Untangle) aren't really a good fit. This seems like a common issue. Detail: For legal reasons, we have to be able to roll back time every so often (ie. when death-threats are made on some web-forum). Currently, our traffic logs on Internet traffic are pretty high-level and aren't really useful to point a finger at the guilty or away from the innocent. We also like to keep our users honest by providing them with data about their own computer use (ie. what are the top 10 websites they hit).

I've been building up rules with iptables and ulogd to log the creation of new connections and save it to a PCAP formatted file for consumption by some very simple analysis scripts, or examination with Wireshark if required. Just logging new connections prevents the logging data from getting large in a hurry, but also doesn't give us a lot of information we would like (ie. the amount of data transferred). We've been examining products that offer fairly full-featured analysis, notably Untangle, but we do a lot of weird stuff (VOIP, VC, VPNs) with traffic flowing through very minimal hardware (PC Engines) running Linux. This is very inexpensive and very flexible, and we like it that way.

Slackware :: Vim Colours Change Slightly In Xterm When A Key Is Pressed?

May 4, 2011

I'm having a problem with vim and xterm. When I open a file and press any key, the colour scheme changes slightly. This doesn't happen if I run a 256-colour xterm (export TERM='xterm-256color') but if TERM is set to 'xterm' (the default) I see the colour change. Setting TERM='xterm-256color' in my ~/.bashrc is a "solution", but I'd rather not have to do that since it's never been necessary in the past (e.g., on 13.1) and I don't use any 256-color schemes for vim (usually just the default or possibly "delek"). It doesn't happen with rxvt or with Xfce's terminal. I've tried compiling some other versions of xterm but they either exhibit the same behaviour or don't build. I have tried running without any ~/.vimrc file just to be sure it wasn't one of my settings and I've also tried the sample file at /usr/share/vim/vimrc; the effect is the same.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Microphone Recorded Sound Barely Audible

Feb 9, 2011

I am trying to record using a microphone on a machine running Fedora 14. The microphone itself seems to work fine when plugged into a Windows laptop, and the Linux machine is able to play sound just fine. However, although I can record using the microphone (using arecord or audacity, for example), the recorded audio is super, super quiet. I have run alsamixer, and experimented with every capture source. Anything which had any effect (using arecord -vv to see the dynamic sound level) has been turned up to 100%. Still, recorded audio is barely audible.

I have run:
yum reinstall alsa-utils alsa-plugins-pulseaudio alsa-tools-firmware alsa-firmware alsa-lib
But that made no difference. I ran alsa-info, and the output is here: [URL]. Why my recorded sound is barely audible? My next step is probably going to be to boot to Ubuntu, just to see if it has the same problem.
