Ubuntu Multimedia :: TV Card Works In Tvtime But Not In Other Programs
May 20, 2010
I get perfect picture with Tvtime, but can't watch /dev/video0 with any other programs, I've checked if some proccess use it, and it's not it.
I wan't to watch this with vlc, tv-viewer or other programs to record, but when it doesn't recognize anything!

I just bought a Xonar D2X. Wonderful thing - recording from mic and quality of output to speakers is superb... on my Windows install. : /
It appears to work correctly in Kubuntu 10.10 as when I open up Sound and Video configuration, I can see it listed correctly and when I hit "Test", I get the annoying Ubuntu tinkle-plonk. But no application I use seems willing to use it. In fact, both Optical Outs (the motherboard's and the soundcards) are working fine when I try playing a test sound from this panel, but neither seems to be output to by VLC, Spotify or anything else I've tried.
I have set the entry "Xonar D2X Multichannel (IEC958 (S/PDIF)) Digital Audio Output to the preferred option for all output. Silence.
How do I convince VLC, Spotify et al, that the card really is there and they're really, really welcome to use it?

I have a problem with these new earphones I've got.
When I play music in Banshee, I can only hear the instruments and barely the voices.
However, when I play the same files in VLC, I can hear everything 100%.
Can anyone explain what is going on?

I migrated back from Maverick because I couldn't get Tvtime to work because /dev/mixer is no longer created in 10.10 so no volume control from within tvtime. I'm now back to 10.04. The issue that I'm having is that I have 4 devices that show up as /dev/mixer, /dev/mixer1,/dev/mixer2 and /dev/mixer3. I need to have tvtime use the mixer associated with my soundblaster audigy card.
whenever I reboot, the order of these devices changes. Sometimes the soundblaster is assoaciated with /dev/mixer , sometimes it's /dev/mixer2 etc. Is there a way to ensure that the devices are always in the same place/order? On a related note, sometimes my usb webcam is video1 other times it's video0 , this also causes problems with tvtime. How can I ensure that my system is the same after each boot? I tried dev rules but couldn't get them to work properly.

When I run tvtime with the desktop effects enabled Xorg, compiz and tvtime use a lot of cpu. It's even worse with tvtime in full screen. This doesn't happen with the desktop effects off or when I use vlc for example. The system is a 3GHz P4 Prescott, 1.7GB Ram, Nvidia FX5500. I'm running 11.3 with the nvidia video driver (173.14.27).

Ever since I upgraded to Slackware 13.1, my previously functional pcHDTV card worked fine. Since the upgrade, however, I get nothing from tvtime except a blue screen and "No Signal."
I saw this thread, which led me to try rmmod'ing related modules for video4linux and my card, but modprobe'ing everything back in didn't solve the issue.

It all started Tuesday morning. I woke up and turned my computer on. Normally I just leave it on all the time, but I turned it off the previous night for some reason. When I turned it on, everything worked fine for about 10 minutes, until my monitor said "Monitor Working Out of Scan Range." I messed with the settings on the monitor to try and get it back, but to no avail. Restarting would make it work, but for even shorter periods. It eventually would display the manufacturer image (Everex), and then go dead again with the same message.
I thought it was the monitor at first, and got a new one. The new one is a wide screen 18.5 inch Dell IN1910N. The problem persisted, so I knew it wasn't this. I kinda figured it out when I started smelling something burning coming from my computer, and discovered it was the graphics card I installed awhile back. It is the pci ATI X1550, and its fan no longer worked.
So I figured, well, I will just remove it and go back to the onboard video. Doing this worked fine, until I got to the stage where it tried to boot to the Xserver, and then the computer just hangs. No sounds indicate I ever get to a logon screen or anything.
Now, I tried commands like sudo dpkg-configure xserver-xorg, and it asked me a lot of questions about my keyboard, but didn't fix my video. I also tried the "Xfix" option in recovery mode, and it purged all the old fglrx drivers, but that didn't help either.
I am currently using a live CD (I was doing straight command-line for awhile, after I also played hell getting the wireless working). I tried literally coping and pasting the entire contents of the X11 folder over, but that didn't work either (the xorg.conf files were the same anyway). I don't know what to do to get my old partition to boot X correctly.
All the commands I was copying before are not in my terminal now, and I'm not sure exactly what command-line information you need. I know that Openchrome is supposed to run the onboard VIA video, but I don't recall the command that tells me everything about it.

setting up tvtime for Conexant Cx8800 based TV tuner cards in Ubuntu 10.04?
I tried all the combinations by modifying the tvtime.xml configuration file but I still get only a Blue screen and no audio.
I also tried with xawtv and the result was same. I have given below the output of xawtv -hwscan.
Code:
abhilash@ubuntu:~$ xawtv -hwscan
This is xawtv-3.95.dfsg.1, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.32-21-generic)

I would like to try tvtime on my Dell PC, bu I do not understand how to use the encrypted signal from comcast cable. I realize I will need to purchase a tv capture card. What is the best one for a Intel Core I3? Is there a USB version that will work?My TV is hooked to a TIVO HD box that has a comcast cable card. Is the signal decrypted by the cable card and then is it just necessary to obtain the decrypted signal from the TIVO output?

I have been trying to get tvtime or any tv package to work with my Pinnacle PCTV HD usb but I have not had success. I have correctly installed every driver imaginable. So, here is what it what it comes down to: When I open tvtime it says "cannot open capture device /dev/video0" and the screen is blue. But my usb PCTV HD stick is NOT /dev/video0 so the question is how can I get tvtime to look for the usb tv tuner rather than video0?

After installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS over the weekend I had some problems, which I subsequently solved and thought I'd mention here.
- First, the dreaded Low Graphics (EE)NOUVEAU(0):Error allocating scanout buffer:-12 which wouldn't allow me to change my monitor resolution.
- Second, TVTime television viewer would not launch at all.
Solution to BOTH of these problems:
From Synaptic uninstall xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (experimental) and reinstall xserver-xorg-video-nv.
Now everything works!

Tvtime built in volume control stopped working in maverick because it depends on kernel support of Open Sound System (oss) and ubuntu kernels are no longer compiled with this turned on.
You can get an experimental deb of tvtime for maverick here:[URL]
which will work with ALSA sound system.
Here is a partial solution I found on the Russian Ubuntu board by Alexandris if you cannot get the above deb to work for you:
tvtime configuration file at /etc/tvtime/tvtime.xml will allow you to reassign the left and right arrow keys to control whole system volume level while tvtime is running.
Make the following changes in tvtime.xml:
1. comment out existing left and right keybindings by enclosingg them with '<!--', '-->' tags:
Code:
<!--
<bind command="left">
<keyboard key="left"/>
<keyboard key="-"/>
[Code]....
3. save changes to tvtime.xml and start tvtime in a terminal window and see if there is any error messages. The Russian Ubuntu board recommended using "amixer -c default" , but I had to change mine to "amixer -c 0" (the number of my sound card) to get things to work. You might have to do the same...

I have been using Tvtime for several years and never had trouble with the video until now. Now it opens, but it's frozen. There is no picture and no sound, just a black screen that I can't control in any way. Even to close it, I have to go through the terminal.I can still get channels using Mplayer, so the tuner should not be the problem. However, t is an Hauppauge 950.I was using Lucid on both partitions. Initially, one quit, but not the other. About a month later the other quit while I was watching which makes me think it may be something I have simply hit on the keyboard. I have since upgraded to Maverick on one and reinstalled Tvtime to no avail

I switched to openSUSE 11.2 because the internet used to be slow on UBUNTU 9.10. INTERNET on openSUSE 11.2 is working like wonders for me as i use 3G internet from a NOKIA N73 MOBILE.ubuntu was was a touch slower on the internet side. i don't want to shift back to ubuntu ,UBUNTU 10.04 release is just 9 days away. it's been a LONG time since I've used Fedora (I think 6 was the last I used) and I decided to check things out. Installed the LiveCD KDE respin x86_64 version. Once the installation was done, I installed the yum fastest mirror plugin, then did a yum update. I then yum installed firefox, and used the autoten script to install Flash-plugin, Mp3-codecs, Dvd-codecs, and All-codecs. I then installed amarok and tried playing a song. There was no sound, and the slider moved at least twice as fast as it should have. I then attempted to play a video file with VLC. The video played fine, but there was still no sound. Firefox seems to be the only program that plays sound properly, as both ..... and pandora play fine. Konqueror however does not play sound on ......This seems to me like a 64-bit related issue since I think firefox has all the 32 bit libraries for flash to work, but like I said, I've been out of this scene for a while now.

I used to watch and record TV in Vista and Win7 with a SAA7134 capture card, and all worked fine. Using TVTime in Ubuntu 10.10 64bit (no upgrade but fresh install, everything up-to-date), I get picture but no sound. Instead I get this error message when running TVTime from the terminal: Can't open device /dev/mixer, mixer volume and mute unavailable.Using lspci in terminal lists the card as following:
Code:
02:01.0 Multimedia controller: Philips Semiconductors SAA7131/SAA7133/SAA7135 Video Broadcast Decoder (rev d1)
And dmesg outputs this:
Code:
[ 16.078404] saa7130/34: v4l2 driver version 0.2.16 loaded
[ 16.078458] alloc irq_desc for 17 on node -1
[ 16.078460] alloc kstat_irqs on node -1[code]....
Being rather new to Linux (oh great, another newbie ) I don't know what additional info you might need, but I'm more than happy to post everything neededd - provided you tell me how to get that info.

I have an eeepc 701 4gb running Ubuntu eeepc, however I have two major problems:
1) I have run out of disk space even for upgrading the operating system and essential software such as flash. There is nothing on my eeepc that I dont deem essential and no files just programs.
2) I get an error message saying my disk is being used outside of designed paramaters and may be faulty (ironically it also says my battery is faulty but it is working fine)
As such I want to buy a 16gb or 32gb SDHC card and use that as my main harddrive (cheaper than buying a new one and they are on offer atm). I know how to do this on XP but I would much rather keep Ubuntu.

Since I'm having such a hard time getting drivers for my VIA/s3g unichrome pro igp k8m800 built in video card. I was thinking about getting the least expensive video card possible that will work with Ubuntu 10:10 in my Emachine T3104. I don't need any more card then the one that is built into this motherboard. So cheap is the word.

I have bought two Asus NX1101 gigabit cards for my kubuntu box and ubuntu server box. The cards are automatically detected as eth1. However the speed is set to 100mbit instead of 1gbit.
ifconfig eth1 .....
capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list rom ethernet physical tp mii 10bt 10bt-fd 100bt 100bt-fd autonegotiation
configuration: autonegotiation=on broadcast=yes driver=Sundance Technology IPG Triple-Speed Ethernet duplex=full ip=130.89.169.33 latency=64 maxlatency=10 mingnt=80 multicast=yes port=MII speed=100MB/s
resources: irq:17 ioport:ec00(size=256) memory:f7d00000-f7d000ff memory:f7c00000-f7c0ffff(prefetchable)
I noticed that both lshw and ethtool claim that the card does not support 1000mbit. So changing the speed manually with ethtool doesn't work. In windows XP the card works as it should.

I have a now pretty old PC, I think it is 400 Mhz Pentium II, on which I installed a Linksys WMP54G 802.11g PCI card, and on which I wanted to run Fedora 10, but I can't get the wlan card working. As I had a vague memory of having it seen working before, I reverted to Fedora 9, and it worked, at least before I made an update of it. So I took a closer look at it, and besides finding out that there is nothing wrong with my PC and the WLAN card, I also found some oddities. My feeling is that the configuration settings in Network Configuration window seems a bit unrelated to the behavior of the system. Here is a summary of what I found:
1) The WMP54G/RaLink does neither work rightly after installation of Fedora-10-i386, and nor after updating it.
2) The WMP54G/RaLink device worked rightly after installation of Fedora-9-i386, but not after updating it.
3) It seems strange to me that there is no wlan0 entry in the Network Configuration window, neither for fc9 nor for fc10. (There is an eth0 entry though.) It feels even stranger that the systems connects anyway over wireless, even though there is no wlan0 entry, both for fc9 and fc10.
4) After having manually added wlan0 in Network Configuration window, it seems strange to me that the system tries to connect via wlan0, e.g. after a restart and login even though nothing is checked in the Wireless Device Configuration window for wlan0. (I believe this oddity is valid for eth0 too).
5) For Fedora 10, I get prompted to save the network configuration even in the case nothing has been changed.

I have an auxillary laptop that I use with Fedora 9 on it. Up until now, I have been using wireless just fine with a an old Marvell card. A friend needed a wireless card, so I gave it to her because I had a spare Belkin card (PCMIA) with a RT2500 chipset. This chipset has been supported in Fedora for a long time, and it does it fact work but it will not obtain an IP address and disconnects from the Network Manager upon every attempt to connect.. I get an error that says "set bit rate" failed and I cannot get assigned an IP address from my router.
I do not use encryption. Nothing I have tried with sysconfig-network has had any affect.
iwlist scan finds the router just fine with a good signal, but will not connect.
