Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sort Videochat To Become A Serious Desktop Player
Jan 7, 2010
I'm a huge fan of Linux in general and Ubuntu in particular. But until there is a more user friendly microphone/video experience, Ubuntu has no real hope of achieving significant desktop market share, something I dearly want to see. Every install of Ubuntu I've tried in the past few years has had maddening problems in this area. I've spent hours trawling forums, fiddling with Alsa settings, disabling and re-enabling options, installing various packages, all to no avail.
Buy any Windows based laptop or Mac and the integrated mic and webcam will generally work first time. My other half recently bought a Macbook, and the video experience was completely seamless. I've recently completely ditched Windows, and feel utterly liberated, but I could only do this as I have access to a Mac for videochat. Videochat is not a luxury, it's a must have for most users. I'm aware of some of the various issues behind the problem, but surely Canonical can muster enough geeks to fix sound and video. This sums it up pretty well: Why do No Serious Musicians use Linux?

I don't fully understand this problem. Using 10.10 on Dell Inspiron 2650.
When I load a DVD or CD the DVD/CD player and disc doesn't show in Places or on the desktop. It doesn't show in Banshee. But using VLC and going to media/open disc/play I can play both the audio CD and the DVD's.
Any idea what the problem is? How do I get the player to show in Places? Should there be an icon on the desk top?

After seeing how good netflix movies looked over a wireless connection I decided to pull out an old desktop to see if I could up a basic media player . I loaded Ubuntu 10.4 and was impressed how fast and clean the computer ran. I also downloaded the latest version of boxee. I was disappointed with the quality of video; video was not very sharp, there were square blocks(pixelated) in dark areas of the picture. At this point I am trying to decide if the poor quality is due to my video card, boxee, CPU or if I am expecting too much from web content. should I just a browser or VLC. Naturally I would like to spend little money and use what I have. If however my hardware is not salvageable for what I want to use it for, I would like to know. Any opinions?
Specs are:
-P4 , Dual Processors 3.2G
-2 Gig Ram
-Sata Drives
-Nvidia Fx5200 AGP 128 Ram
-Nic 100
Network speed 25 Mb/s down

Google recently announced the availability of GMail Video Chat for linux! This is great news :-) But the sad part is that the plugin has been released only for Ubuntu and Debian based systems! So the thing is we have a .deb. Is there a way we could get the .rpm for installation? I tried using alien but sad enough, the generation of the rpm file fails for no reason what soever.

Crystal Player has one very good playback speed troubleshooting feature - it uses large buffer of decoded frames (about 50% of RAM). Is there any player with such features in ubuntu?

I have a DVD with a error located at a certain time. Each time I watch the DVD and then come to that point Movie Player (or vlc player) returns a error. Now I want to rip this DVD but all the rippers I tried return a error at that point when they try to rip it. Rippers I tried:
- dvd::rip
- FFMPEG
- Acidripper
- Avidemux
Now I want to know ain't there a ripper which can read over these errors and still make a decent rip?

I've been away from Linux for a while, so I need to get informed about some of the 32- vs. 64-bit issues concerning video players and codecs. So, what is everyone using these days?
More specifically, is it possible to play, e.g., .wmv files with 64-bit Kaffeine (my favorite player) or any other 64-bit video player? If so, then which combination of player and codec should I use?

I am unable to run compiz or set any advanced desktop effects in my Ubuntu 9.10 running under VMware Workstation 7.1. This is the output of the compiz command:
Checking for Xgl: not present.
xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: xterm
no xterm found, exiting
What does all that mean exactly?

I recently installed openSuse 11.2 KDE in a Dell 1535 laptop.
I tried to enable the Cube desktop feature through desktop settings and when I pressed the apply button the system crashed. The screen freezed and the laptop wasn't responding to anything.
So I rebooted the laptop and now every time gets stack in the green screen and trying to load but it never does. I suspect that it has to do with my ATI card because a couple of 3d games would crash the system too. I tried some solutions that I found here like disabling the desktop effects by tweaking kwinrc file but it didn't worked.
Does anyone know how to disable that Cube feature from failsafe mode?

I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x64 in VMWare Player on my Windows 7 x64. My host video card is an ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5730 with 1 GB DDR3 and I am very sure that my other specs are above par for desktop effects (i7-820QM, 8 GB DDR3 RAM). However, even though I enabled 3D acceleration for the Ubuntu virtual machine (along with 4 cores and 1 GB RAM), I can't enable desktop effects. I have successfully installed VMWare Tools. I used to use VirtualBox and with x86 Ubuntu desktop effects work.

I know, Songbird does not currently support Linux... I got the x64 .deb file off this website (http://skyzim.com/songbird-1-4-3-installer/) and installed it without issue. I got it up and running then screwed something up with the graphics and needed to reinstall. Now when I get the same file off the website, install it, then try to run I get an error "GLib-ERROR **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.24.1/glib/gmem.c:157: failed to allocate 14145530384 bytes". I tried doing a sudo apt-get remove libvisual-0.4-plugins as was recommended elsewhere to no avail. Anyone know how to get songbird up and running again? I did a "Removal" through synaptic to uninstall the first time, perhaps that is an issue?

Since upgrading to 10.04, Rhythmbox has been crashing regularly. It seems that every time it picks a new track, it has a chance of closing without notice. This can happen for the first track it plays, when clicking "next track" or when automatically going to the next track. This only seems to happen on shuffle, which is the way I usually use Rhythmbox. I tried running it with `rhythmbox -d` but the only output consistent between crashes is "Aborted", which appears suddenly and without any additional information or even a line break.
(10.04 64bit, upgraded from 9.10.)
