I installed skype, and all the sound works, except for the fact that it doesn't ring when someone calls me!!! All i see is a little pop up that says someone is calling me, but I cannot hear the ringtone. When i pick up, i hear the other end clearly, there's just no ringtone with someone calls me
Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it?
I have a vx-6000 and the video and pictures actually works good but there is no sound can you get sound to work and how?

I am using a USB headset and a logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 with Ubuntu 10.04
1. When I change the sound to internal sound the webcam works in Skype but I have not sound.
2. When I change the sound to the USB headset (sound output) the webcam does not work in Skype.
After installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.
I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.
I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.
Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?
Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server

also, when i open alsamixer in the terminal for some reason the headphone part is greyed out, even when the sound is working before qjackctl is opened.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem using cheese to record video from my webcam. The image is extremely slow to update. Especially when there is lots of movement it sometimes freezes for about a second.
When I use the webcam in Skype it works fine. Does anybody have a clue what might cause this and better yet, how to fix it.
I have a Sager NP5797 running Lucid (32-bit) with a BisonCam NB Pro (V4L2) webcam on /dev/video0 In Flash (like [URL]), everything works great. My video appears to both myself and others, and I see incoming video. (I am using the 10.1 RC libflashplugin.so, downloaded from Adobe's site) But in applications like Cheese, Skype, etc., I get a big blank white box where video should be: Cheese (as well as every other app I try) sees the camera on /dev/video0:
In Skype, the person I am calling sees my video perfectly fine. So my camera is "working" and sending video. But I cannot see my video, nor can I see their incoming video. It's all a big white box just like the one in Cheese in the shot above. Taking the other person out of the equation, when I go to use the "test" in Skype, it's just a blank white box too. The video will not draw for me.
Again, I do see video in Flash-based web apps that use the webcam. And other people are seeing my video. But webcam video (both mine and the incoming stream) won't "draw" for me. What makes V4L video not draw? I am using the binary NVIDIA driver for the GTX 280M chip in the laptop, and I am using Compiz. Though I tried turning Compiz off and Cheese still just showed the white box.
I have a Sapphire PC USB webcam. It has a driver cd for Windows and it works fine there. But in Ubuntu 10.04 I get pink, hazy video when I use Cheese.I tried Camorama but in that software I get 'No Video' error.What should I do?

I have a very big image directory: One image per minute, whole a year, captured from a webcam. Now I want to make a video (15 or 24FPS) with all the webcam captures, to see how it changed during this period. I've tried automotion, but it makes a very low quality video, besides it blocks with lots of images. I've also tried dvd-slideshow, but it's not possible to make a more-than-1FPS video.
I also need to change the date in each webcam's images, because they are wrong, so it needed to overlay a little layout with the right date for each image, is that possible to manage within some application? Preferibly shell applications which supports lots of Gb of information (anyway I always could make little videos and then glue them)
I wonder if anyone here has succeeded in streaming the video of a local webcam to the internet? Some research has turned up webcam_server Project Home Page but unfortunately it only supports v4l, not v4l2 and is no longer maintained. It seems to be possible with VLC server, but I'm a bit reluctant, because their repo is said to break other things. I still have 11.1 here.

This used to be possible back in the day before PulseAudio was installed by default (by using Mencoder, following guides such as [URL] and [URL] ) but that method doesn't work any more: /dev/dsp doesn't exist. I've also tried Cheese and that again just records a video with no audio. All the articles I can find on the topic are from the good old pre-Pulse days.
I've tried messing about with the commands a bit to use the Alsa Pulse device (defined in /etc/asound.conf) since neither mencoder or ffmpeg seem to have built in Pulse input support:

So my Microsoft Lifecam NX-3000 used to work with 9.04, but I can't seem to get anything from it now (Xubuntu 9.10). It still shows up fine when i enter lsusb, but it won't show up as a video device anywhere else. I have faith that this bug is a simple fix for someone who knows what they're doing, but unfortunately I don't. If it's relevant this is on my aging Toshiba Satellite.

I'm trying to set up video streaming for security monitoring - and because the Dell is pretty slow, I need to stream at a low rate of frames/sec to keep a reasonably low cpu utilisation. Motion hasn't crashed, it's still running. I also get a message in syslog ... uvcvideo: Failed to resubmit video URB (-27)
When I play large HD videos in mplayer, the video and sound frequently get out of sync, and the video plays a little strangely (occasionally speeding up and occasionally slowing down).
I think it's because mplayer is only running on a single core. As I've got a quad-core processor, it seems inefficient. I've seen that there is theoretically a way to get mplayer to work with multicore setups, but it requires compiling with different options. That'd take me a little while to work through.
Ideally there would be a pre-compiled version in the software centre, or a player which has support built in (again, ideally in the software centre). Is there such a thing available?

View 5 Replies View RelatedIf I run Amarok right after ubuntu starts, and then start a movie, there is no sound. It doesn't matter that the playback in Amarok is paused, stopped or active, there is no sound in the other player. Even if i exit Amarok, i don't get any sound. It is important to note that the other player is definitely a gnome application. I tried playing a song in Rhythmbox after Amarok was started, or play a video in Movie Player: no sound. I get sound from KDE video players, but the video doesn't work there, so that isn't an option. The only explanation i can think of, is that Amarok somehow "occupies" the sound drive, and it remains "occupied" even after the application was closed. Because if i start Movie Player before Amarok, this problem never appears.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running 10.04 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 1505 laptop. Normally, when I plug my headphones in, all sound is diverted to them. I haven't found anything in sound preferences that changes this.(Under Sound Preferences, Output tab, there's a dropdown called Connector.It has options: "Analog Heaphones", "Analog Output" and "Analog Speakers" but they don't seem to make a difference.) I'd like to leave my headphones plugged in all day and setup my machine to play all sounds through my speakers (including Skype ringing), except Skype calls, which should play through my headphones. Skype has a feature to split the ringing and call sounds, i.e. play them on different devices, but the only option in each dropdown is "PulseAudio Server (local)".
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn Lucid, Logitech Pro 9000 webcam worked fine until the kernel was upgraded to 2.6.32-24 recently. The usb sound was not listed in /proc/asound/cards. I had to boot from 2.6.32-23 to make it work.
UPDATE: the recent upgrade to 2.6.32-25 fixed this problem.

In [URL] I can right-click on a flash video and have the option to access "local settings" under "Settings" to specify configuration for webcam, mic, etc. But in Facebook I need to adjust a setting and the "Setting" option for local config is gray-ed out, I can't access it.
I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4, and I've seen this in GNOME and KDE within Firefox.
