I'm having an issue where I can't hear any sounds in Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit). In the Sounds Preferences, under Hardware it correctly lists "SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio". The sound is not muted, and I've tried cycling through various Profile options in the hardware tab. Since it is correctly detected, I'm thinking that there might be something simple that I'm missing here. The motherboard is an MSI P6N Diamond: [URL]

But only in the Startup screen, where you enter your username. There you hear the startup-sound. When i log in and go to rhytmbox or ....., i don't hear anything. no os-sounds, too.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a HP laptop model HP G72 Notebook PC, Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 350 @2.27GHz & the Sound devices are Intel(R) Display Audio & Realtek High Definition Audio.
This machine came loaded with Windows7 & I have successfully dual booted it with Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.3.
The problem I am having is that I cannot get the sound to work at all in Ubuntu. No opening sounds or anything else that I have tried. No Web sounds, no CD sounds... All sounds work fine on the Windows side, but nothing I have tried so far seem to work with Ubuntu & I have tried many options from many threads.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) with Skype, and I can't get the microphone to work. I can hear them, but they can't hear me. I tried the same headset with my Windows system, and it works fine, so the headset is OK.
I looked at "Sound Preferences", and noticed that when I click on the "Input" tab, the area where you can adjust the volume is set at the minimum, and grayed out, so I can't adjust it.

My capture settings are 'on' in alsamixer as in they are in red with the words CAPTURE underneath it.
I put in a dvd and couldnt hear the first 3 minutes of one dvd, i put in a second dvd and could hear anything from it, how do i know what codecs to install to hear the audio? the video is viewable
I got an audio disc to play in kaffeine but not in amorok, in setting of amarok i hit the configure phonon and pick my audio device hit test and i can hear sounds.
I've been using opensuse for about a week.(although I'm not completely a linux noob) I've been slowly moving more of the stuff I do on windows over to suse. I thought my sound was working fine until I decided to get mp3s running on amarok. I followed a bunch of guides which didn't work. While I was messing around with stuff I noticed a startup noise. I just assumed it didn't have a startup noise. At some point I broke all of my sound except running wine, so I reinstalled.
Now that I've noticed, none of my notification sounds work. Stuff like skype, firefox, and wine still give me sounds.
(If anyone could point me in the direction of a good place to get mp3s working on amarok would be nice as well.)
ok so a while ago i updated ubuntu and the sound stopped working. i cant hear anything now not even a system beep - i tried the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide by LordRaiden but to no success. i tried alsamixer and all that to check its muted, and its not.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I use my ubuntu computer to watch some movies that are encoded into 5.1 sound I can't hear the voices of the people in the movie. I guess that is because the voices are put on the front speaker and I have connected the computer to an stereo-amplifier.
I mainly use XBMC and have noticed the problem there but I have also tried VLC and noticed the same problem there. In xbmc I checked the box "Downmix multichannel audio to stereo" but it doesn't work.
I use a standard ubuntu 10.04 64-bit install that was upgraded from a 9.10 install.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI can't hear the music playing on my speakers, BUT i can hear the music playing in my headphones when i insert my headphones jack.
I have tried configuring aslamixer, tried configuring the sound devices but nothing seems to work. i have also installed a lot of music players such as asla player, audacity and so on. i also tried configuring the aslamixer from the terminal but it did's work as well.
I must add that i have linux ubuntu netbook remix 9.10 i386 installed and windows xp home edition sp3. In windows, i have no problem playing any sound. (I am new to linux <2 days> but very experimented with windows <17 years>).
I am having a problem when using Flash. Whenever I am listening to a Flash application (..... primarily), I am unable to hear sound from any other applications (Rhythmbox, movie player, etc).
The converse is also true, if I am using Rhythmbox, and then start ....., the video plays...but with no sound. I have to manually kill the app and web browser (tried multiple...Firefox, Chrome, Swiftfox) to get sounds working correctly. I am my wits end with this problem, and have just putting up with it for several months now.

I've tried on and off over the years messing with pulse, esd, etc. output options for vlc, but never figured out exactly how to do this. In Windows, having a batchfile play a .wav at the same time as an mp3 player is playing music "just works" I know there must be a "just works" solution for Linux.
I'm currently using Ubuntu 9.10 and since I've installed it, I don't have any sounds at all. Sounds work fine on windows. My version of alsa is 1.0.21. I made sure that I've got nothing muted in alsa mixer and it seems that ubuntu detects my sound card.

Hi, I have a Creative HS-1200 headset. When I am listening to sound through it, and something makes a motion on screen(compiz, movie...really anything) then the sound is distorted. Like it takes a nanosecond pauses to redraw. This does not happen with my normal soundcard. Can anyone tell me how can I fix this?
