Ubuntu Multimedia :: XBMCBuntu - Running 2 X Displays At Boot?
Jan 14, 2011
I have a Asus EEE Box EB1007-W0067 running as htpc in my livingroom. Due to the limited hardware in the box i'm running Ubuntu server with a minimal xorg-xserver installation. The system autoinlogs into the xbmc user and spawns a xserver only running XBMC. Slim, fast and no fuzz . So far i'm realy happy about the setup. 1080p? no problem.
However, since there is no Spotify Addon for XBMC yet (in development but still way to buggy to use in a none development enviroment) i have to fallback to running Spotify native. And here comes the problem; I can't start Spotify in XBMC because XBMC will run it in the background. And since my wife must be able to use the system i've to come out with something easy to use. Is it possible to make ubuntu-server to boot into 2 diffrent X-Displays. One running XBMC and one running Spotify, i think my wife (and others) would be able to switch displays with ctr-alt-F7/F8.

I have a multiheaded setup with one X server and two displays i.e. :0.0 and :0.1. Is there a way to have one instance of an X client for example xeyes and have this displayed on both displays at the same time. I want one keyboard/mouse that controls both displays. I do not want to use Xinerama.

Linux version 2.6.18-194.el5 (mockbuild@x86-007.build.bos.redhat.com) (gcc version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-48)) #1 SMP Tue Mar 16 21:52:43 EDT 2010Am using VWware ESX to host this guest operating system. When it clears post, the screen goes to the red background you typically see right before the login prompt comes up... but it never does. If the machine made it on the wire I can putty to it, but through deploying these, the machine isn't always on the wire and I need to be able to use VMware's viewer to gain access to it

My system runs fine, I have an Nvidia card and when I boot up I guess it would be Plymouth displays some stuff; several lines and it goes by too quick for me to be able to read much of it.
Then it goes back to normal and the login in screen appears like normal. Everything is normal except for the black display and the stuff that is displayed before the login screen appears. Even with this, my system boots up in under 20 seconds at last check.
Is there anything I should/could do to get the errors or information lines or whatever they are to not show up?
I installed Lucid during beta (I think) and have kept up with the updates and all appears smooth to me. I have a super nice custom grub2 screen.

When I use a media PC to watch MP4s they generally show up nicely with a scrollable selection of "covers" to select which clip I want to watch (like covers of film DVDs). How is this determined and is there software that allows this to be edited and changed?
I want to edit some video clips and present them in a professional display with the other clips I have. Ideally this would mean I could create a "title page" like a DVD cover

I was wondering if anyone has a solution to my problem: I run Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop (everything is great) but when I come home I like to connect it to a larger monitor. This will work fine, but presently the only way for me to get that to work is to go into my nVidia settings and reconfigure the displays every time I do this. Is there I can make my system recognize it should change displays as soon as I plug in the monitor?

Anyone know if there is a command to change displays? Something equivalent to Ctrl-Alt-F1. I have my Ubuntu XBMClive box setup to run XMBC in Display :0 and Skype in Display :7. For some reason I have to start Skype last but then I don't know how to get back to XBMC automatically.

I just upgraded my Debian Etch to Lenny. After doing so, Xorg displays no fonts. I get only rectangles. This occurs in the Login Screen and after logging in. The only thing that is readable are the contents of a terminal (even gnome-terminal). What can I do to solve this Problem? The Xorg.0.log doesn't give me any clue on what's the problem.

I'm on HP tx2000 Tablet PC, with nVidia GeForce 6150 Go onboard, 4GB of RAM, Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 Desktop. I keep getting a blank screen after boot splash when I'm on BATTERY POWER. Though I get a blank screen, the screen comes alive when I SUSPEND the laptop by closing the lid, and then RESUME the laptop. Then I can see the logon box and whole desktop.
Usually people get problem by suspending their laptops (usually the screen not coming back after resuming), but now I SOLVE the problem by suspending my laptop. Well like I said I can somehow get the screen right, but I really can't (and don't want to) suspend and resume my laptop every time I boot. Problem occurs REGARDLESS of type of display driver I use. nVidia proprietary, nouveau... whichever driver I use, I get the same conclusion.

I got out my old Fuji Finepix s3100 and set it to web cam mode to see if anything had changed in the world of usb video drivers. Lo and behold it worked! I can watch myself on cheese web cam booth. kewl, but I wanted more. So, just recently hearing about chatroulette on the Daily Show, I click and wahla no go . After flash comes up and asks for and receives user permission to access my hardware, I click to find a random stranger, and my camera displays yellow and blue lines across its onscreen display box. I notice that movement is noticed by the camera. If I move I notice a change in background/lines. As far as I can tell, my camera is not a fault. I mean it works for local viewing. Is this a flash or possibly a chatroulette problem?

In squeeze, Kazehakase just displays a blank page, regardless of how I open it (from file manager, from terminal, from mail client or from menu and bookmark.) This problem occurs with version 0.5.8-3 (i386) and goes away with a forced downgrade to 0.5.8-2. If I open it from a terminal, the program open to a blank page, and there's no output in the terminal. Does anyone else have this problem, and does anyone have suggestions on what to look for to maybe fix this? I don't see any matching bug reports, but I'm prepared to make one.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 with Nvidia GeForce 8200M graphics card. When I first installed Windows 7 followed by Karmic in dual boot I could boot into both OS. Now when I try to boot into Windows, it displays the Windows logo and then drops back to the grub menu. It may have started happening after Windows 7 installed updates. I tried reinstalling both Windows and Karmic again and it again worked initially but now Windows no longer boots. Does anyone have any suggestions about what may be causing this or how I can fix the problem without reinstalling?

I am posting here in hopes of getting some assistance with a problem I have been having. I have been running Ubuntu on my Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop, but I recently decided to try Windows 7. Windows 7 would not boot from CD/DVD as long as Ubuntu was still on the computer, so I completely reformatted the hard drive and tried to install it again. The computer would still not boot from the CD/DVD drive, even after removing Ubuntu. I have gone into the BIOS and changed the boot order so that CD/DVD is listed as number one, but it still will not work. I have also used F12 and selected boot from CD/DVD but this did not work either.
The Windows 7 disc works fine on other machines, so I know it's not a problem with the physical disc. The hard drive has been completely debugged and zeroed out. The funny thing is, the Ubuntu disc will boot from the CD drive just fine, but other discs won't work. I have tried to boot a Windows 7 and Windows XP disc but neither will work. In both instances I get "press any key to continue" but when I press a key nothing happens. I feel this has something to do with the Ubuntu, as my computer would boot from this drive with no issues before I used Ubuntu.I have spent several days trying to solve this problem to no avail.

I recently got a second-hand ProLiant DL380 G3. Currently it has no storage on it. So I was wondering, if and how I could run Ubuntu Server 10.10 (or any free server distro really) from PXE boot until I can get a hard drive. After I get the drive I will also need to install it using PXE as well.

I am using a small ubuntu command-line only distro (Ubuntu Mini Remix) to run off of a LiveCD or USB stick. I need it to run a program as root as soon as it is finished booting, automatically. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it run my program. I have tried putting a script into rc2.d (when I type runlevel at the command line, it tells me it is level 2) that simply contained:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
qct
(qct is the name of my program)
I did the chmod u+x on the script. It does not run my program, though. I have no idea if it was a naming issue or not. I do not understand the naming scheme. When it boots, and doesn't run my program, I can type sudo qct at the command prompt and it runs fine.

How do you actually install ubuntu? I cant figure it out, its nothing like windows! I download the unetbootin to make a boot usb drive.. I did that but when it boots it ask goes blue with a thing flash default. Then it asks me to press tab, when I do that it comes with a cmd. What should a write? If I click esc on the keyboard it brings a cmd line. If I write like E:dir it says kernel invalid. What is a cmd that runs the cd on a boot for ubuntu. How hard is to install it??

when I tried to boot into my PC yesterday, it would run through the normal loading process until it got to the login screen. There it loaded the splash screen, but the login box never comes up. I have rebooted several times, tried recovery, and run several reconfigure gdm options I have seen on the forums. Nothing seems to work.
I have restarted gdm, it goes back to the same screen again. If I startx, I was able to get to a desktop with several things missing, and unable to go into anything that required sudo permission. Also, the shutdown and restart optons were grayed out in the menu.

If i do live cd and restore grub, will windows 7 work?? I haven't given any details of hd0 and root, i'll manage, just tell the procedure.

I have a small but annoying problem... I have two scripts that I want to run automatically one at boot and one at shutdown. For the one at boot I tried to put it in rc.local or to create a file in /etc/init.d/ based on the others files in the folder but nothing worked... I need it to run system-wide and not once a specific user is logged in.
For the script at shutdown I don't know how to do it but it can be user specific or system-wide I don't really care. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 64bits with kernel 2.6.35-24-generic
PS. I should add that when executed manually both scripts works perfectly well and I don't need those script to run continuously in the background, just run and quit.

I have a jar file which runs as the server with a GUI in my machine and if that starts up i can control my machine with the client in my android phone through LAN. Manually everything works fine if i login and start the server.
What I want to do
1) The server(jar file) should be started at boot
2) This should be available to all users irrespective of who is logged in and if multiple users are logged in simultaneously.
What I have already tried
1) I have tried to add this to the Startup Applications but it does not work always due to some reason after switching between users but even if it works thats not the solution i need because these settings are for a specific user and works after login
2) I tried adding this to rc.local file, but does not work when i login with any user, not sure why. I also tried putting them into all the runlevels (rc*.d folders), but nothing seems to be working. I am not quite sure if i understand how these methods work but when i did boot the server was not there.
3) Manually if i run the jar and switches the user with the first user still logged in, then the server is as good as not running for the second, but if i try to run the jar again, it fails because there is already a process which is running but for first user. If I switch back to first user i have the server.
The Files
1) I have the jar file to execute in /usr/local/bin/
2) I have a shell script in /etc/init.d/ which executes the java - jar command
3) I have the links to rc*.d for all runlevels for the above script
Nothing in the above seems to be working. I just need one process running for all the users, but i never could see the server starting on startup. If I manually start the server its only available to the user who started it.

I was using the gnome-shell for a little bit to get accustomed to the coming change in march but I removed it. Shortly after, I decided to update my wine, and get the lastest itunes.exe. I save the exe, allowed executing permissions and ran the install. IT WORKED. I did not allow it to be my default player, and I did not allow autorun. whenever i open it says installation error but I hit ok and I am graced with itunes. I still can sync my iphone with it, I guess it can't recognize it.
occasional crashes when I get click happy but playback works most of the time. some times i have to logout in order to try it again. authorized itunes purchases work thru it.

Have been using Karmic kaola for a few months on my toshiba tecra laptop..as of yesterday unable to boot up..all I get is a black screen on start up with no further activity..no bios menu etc..the led lights up for the power source and occasionally lights up on the hard drive which seems to make some noise as if trying to function...did connect it up to an external monitor which displayed the start up toshiba logo but then came up with the message error: "invalid enviroment block" unable to load default boot entries.am wondering if 1. there is a fault with the grub set up?2. Something more serious as my laptop screen refuses to function?3. Will I be able to retrieve my hard drive data using ubuntu live cd connected to an external monitor?
