Ubuntu Multimedia :: Extract The Meta Tags From An Audio File?
Mar 16, 2011
If I convert an audio file to a different format (such as mp3) using a pipe I lose the tags.
Code:
ffmpeg -i <filename> -f wav - | lame - output.mp3
If I knew the tags of the input file I could put them back using a program such as id3v2

I've been searching all over google for a way to extract album artwork embedded in id3 tags.
In an ideal world I could do this recursively in my music folder and have it save the artwork as say "cover.jpg" within the album's folder.
Anyone know of a script or program that can do this in either Linux or OSX?

I have looked at several Podcast retrieving applications. However, none I have found so far do anything good with the Podcast information.
Almost every podcast contains tags that could be populated into metadata tags, it would seem, fairly easily. Having a podcast grabber that did so would certainly simplify using them on my iPod.

I'm trying to convert my flac files to mp3 to play on my portable player, however it is not appending the tags that are on the flac files to the converted mp3 files. However, I thought that pacpl was supposed to support this.

I have a lot of avis with annoying metadata that show in vlc. Since I cannot figure out how to configure vlc in a way that it won't show the tags, ffmpeg should strip the tags. This is supposed to do the trick:

I have two video files (Xvid) and would like to combine the video from one of these with the audio track of the other, in order to create a new video file.
This is somewhat complicated by the fact that I would like the resulting audio to be a mixture of the two original audio tracks, for instance, during some time segments, I would like to switch from one to the other, but the video should always be the same.
Another issue that complicates the things is that the two audio tracks have different bit rates, and when I briefly managed to merge the two, one of the audio tracks was playing much faster than the other. To clarify, the audio tracks should not overlap but just be played at the different time during the video playback.
I am trying to do this by using Audacity. The problem is that I am fairly new to Audacity and I have not been able to find any info in their user guides regarding this specific issue.

It appears I thought I was taking photo's with my Nikon CoolpixS5 but they are saved as .mov files. When I watch file, I see the picture, and then it's over in a second. How can I extract the image from the .MOV file? If it's of any relevance I used digikam to recognise my camera.

I have been editing MP3 tags with Easytag and it has worked for nearly all files but I have some files that when I open them with Easytag, gtkpod Manager, or MusicBrainz Picard, they display the new tags. But when I open these files with Rhythmbox player and when I look at the file properties I see the original pre-editing tags. I know I can change the artist, album, etc. in Rhythmbox player but that just seems to be a local change and I was more concerned by the audio properties of the file showing the old value because I don't want to have to go back and edit the tags again.

For about three months I've been going up and down the internet looking for a solution to this problem... Basically I take this distance learning course. Every lesson is sent to me via email in PDF format and it includes many audio examples which are embedded in the file. The problem is none of the Ubuntu readers seem to recognize it, and the Adobe reader says I need a plug-in which does not exist for my system. I quote: "We're sorry, but the third-party media player required to play the selected media file in your Adobe PDF document isn't available for your system". I've been taking this course for two years and I still have two more to go. I contacted the company that sells this course and they were as puzzled as I am... Is there a way to extract the audio from the PDF? Or alternatively open it with another application? I would hate to have to go back to windows for this one issue...

I have about 50% of my music collection in wma format from my old Windoze days. I don't want to spend the time ( it is about 1800 songs) to re rip the tunes but I want uniform format. I tried using Sound Converter 1.4.4 but I lost all the meta-data.

I'm trying to extract audio and then convert to mp4 format a bunch of flv files downloaded from internet. There are three files I intend to use ffmpeg in the following options:
ffmpeg -i input.flv -acodec copy output.mp3
and
ffmpeg -i "input.flv" -f mp4 -vcodec libxvid -s 640x360 -b 768kb -r 25 -aspect 16:9 -acodec libfaac -ab 96kb -ar 44100 -ac 2 "output.mp4"
So I started writing a script like this:
#!/bin/bash -x
cd /home/koli/exp

I am having some problems editing the meta data tags of some music files. The problem is that i am unable to get some files to show up in either EasyTag or Musicbrainz. Problem is when i go to 'add folder/file' i can't see the songs while browsing.
From what i have observed it seems that the songs for which this is an issue are those which i have converted using sound converter. Here it seems that it is the same files in both programmes so i am thinking that there must be something i can do to the file to have it be recognised.

So I use the following to rip audio from one .mp4 file and then generate one .mp3 file.
Code:
caleb@linux-vmp1:~> ffmpeg -i a -ab 128000 -ar 44100 01.mp3
Obviously, this takes a file named a and makes a file named 01 that is an mp3. It works great and I have used it many times. The problem is, I would like to rip the audio from several files all at once. I am sure there is a way to do it but I haven't stumbled upon the way to do it.

I've decided to start backing up my dvd collection. I want to extract all of the audio, video, and subtitle streams individually (from the main movie title only). Then for convenience and usability I want to put them all in a .mkv container. How can I do this and with which programs? ffmpeg, vlc, mplayer? If I can do this all at once, that's fine. But I don't want to get the streams out of sync.

I'm trying to upgrade from 8.04 to 9.10 via 8.10 etc. When I run update manager, I get this:
W:Failed to fetch [URL] Unable to find expected entry universal/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?), E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
and then it closes. I've unselected all the third party packages and tried various servers, but no difference. I can wget the file, but when I look at it I see entries for "universe/binary-i386/Release", but nothing for "universal" .
