It was installed several times{uninstalled then reinstalled}
It just will not start.
Devede not starting, here is the terminal output:
View 2 Replies View RelatedIf I run Amarok right after ubuntu starts, and then start a movie, there is no sound. It doesn't matter that the playback in Amarok is paused, stopped or active, there is no sound in the other player. Even if i exit Amarok, i don't get any sound. It is important to note that the other player is definitely a gnome application. I tried playing a song in Rhythmbox after Amarok was started, or play a video in Movie Player: no sound. I get sound from KDE video players, but the video doesn't work there, so that isn't an option. The only explanation i can think of, is that Amarok somehow "occupies" the sound drive, and it remains "occupied" even after the application was closed. Because if i start Movie Player before Amarok, this problem never appears.

I have a PowerPC installation (fully patched) of Ubuntu 10, and I pulled down the MythTV suite on top (since there is no Mythbuntu/PPC that I found). I'm having an issue where after I scan for channels with my tuner using mythtv-setup, I can't set the starting channel number. Its almost as if nothing ever populates into the drop down. This seems to be specific to the combination that I have - Ubuntu 10 + PPC + Myth 0.23. If I use another x86 + Myth .21 and the same Tuner (HDHomeRun), I can set the starting channel fine. A Mac OS 10.4 + Myth .21 also allowed me to set the channel. I've rebuilt this install twice now and it won't allow me to set it. I can see the scanned data in the mythconverg database, so I know its there.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSometime last week, my volume control disappeared. Upon investigating, I realized that the PulseAudio daemon was not running. When I tried to start it (both by command line and by graphical interface), it errored and refused to start. It is my impression that some other program is using the sound card, but I have been unable to find anything. I've removed all of my local media program configuration files, but nothing seemed to change.
1) finding the program that is locking the sound card?
On Maverick, I noticed a couple of days ago when I started an MP3 of a single tone recording it had a 'crackle' for about a quarter of a second at the start of playback. I initially thought there was a problem with the recording but I have noticed it is universal and I now pick up it is happening on some songs too (particularly if they start on a single note, not all songs seem affected).
This is a problem if I double-click a sound file which I open in Totem, it's also a problem if I start playing an affected track on Rhythmbox, it also happens if I just hover the mouse to start playback, but interestingly any problematic file if I load into Audacity there is no problem at all and the file plays correctly.
I doubt anyone else will have noticed this bug as it is so small and I wouldn't have picked up on it had I not been playing a single tone recording, but now I have picked up on it I can detect it all the time which is annoying. Has anyone else noticed at all?
I am having problems starting jack everytime I try to start it either says bad file descriptor a bunch times or it wont connect to server as client sometime. Other times It just say sorry cannot start jack.

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. I didn't really find the Unity interface useable (I didn't like Ubuntu Netbook Edition for this exact reason) and am running it in Classic mode. I have a Acer Aspire One D255, Intel Atom processor, etc. When I start the computer up from a hibernate, the screen goes black with a set of random colored pixels at the top corner. I have a mouse but nothing else.

After uninstalling nvidia non-free drivers, I'm now able to boot with nouveau.
Any way for having non-free drivers working again?
I'm using MATE with Lightdm as display manager in Jessie and I've been using a very simple script run from /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/01_debian.conf to slow down the mouse cursor, something like
Code: Select all#!/bin/bash
xinput --set-prop 10 269 -1
xinput --set-prop 10 267 1.100000
the script was placed in my ~ and called from 01_debian.conf , and so far it used to work.
Lately this script wasn't executed properly, most likely because I had unplugged the mouse from its usb port and then plugged again in a different port, and as a result Lightdm wouldn't start at all.
After much trying, because this by coincidence happened after the update to 8.4, I realized that it wasn't a serious failure of the X server as I suspected (the update included a new version of the flgrx driver), but a simple matter of Lightdm failing because of this script: in fact, I could still manually start the session with startx as regular user, although this only gave me access to a LXDE session instead of MATE (I have also the LXDE environment because when I installed Jessie I did use the LXDE version and then added MATE).
What happened was that the mouse properties were scrambled up, so xinput --set-prop 10 269 -1 had now to be something like xinput --set-prop 10 268 -1 and so on - therefore the script failed and in turns Lightdm failed as well.
-is this supposed to happen when you unplug the mouse and then plug it back in a different usb port? It reminds me of some windows-like behavior, where usb peripherals had to be always in the same port to work properly.
-is Ligthdm supposed to fail because of this, or is it kind of a bug? It looks weird to me that instead of simply not executing the script, the whole display manager fails.
In testing, with an identical setup, as a matter of fact the script failed as well (it's on another partition on the same hardware) but Lightdm started as usual.
-when trying to modify the mouse properties in that script, I couldn't get them right again: what looked correct in the booted system, was once again off at the next reboot (i.e. property 269 was 270 again and so on), therefore I ditched the above setup and placed everything in the .xsessionrc file, and it worked again.
-why startx defaulted to the LXDE environment? where is this setting stored? How could I have specified to start a MATE session instead from command line?
I recently installed the Nvidia proprietary drivers and I have a problem starting gdm. Xserver fails, only throwing a warning concerned to xkbcomp, something about ralt having two symbols... but just a warning anyway. Then, after waiting the screen flash between the tty and a black screen a few times;
i'm on the tty, from where I can "startx" without problem. I tried using the nv driver and gdm worked.. so i think it has relation with the nvidia drivers... If I start gdm from the tty, instead of using the startx command, then gdm appears but if I try to log in.. all freezes up.. Here's my xorg.conf generated by nvidia-xconfig: [URL]

If I use Konqueror to start Konsole (by pressing F4) and then run:
perl -le '{print "hello"}'
The result is:
perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:

are supported and installed on your system.

If I start Konsole directly, I do not receive any such errors.
I recently "upgraded" to the latest skype and now every time I open an interactive root shell, up pops skype. I can close skype then control-C in the terminal window to get the shell I want, but this is annoying to say the least. Maybe my google-foo is off, but all I can find is articles on how to run skype as root, which is no use. I've tried searching the startup files for "skype" (case independant), but so far all I can find is "LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/ /usr/bin/skype" in the root .bashrc which shouldn't be starting the app.
what could be causing this?
(Running Wheezy)
I installed OS11.4 on my old laptop, Compaq Armada E500., 512MB RAM, ATI Rage Mobility. During installation I chose "minimal server" and added some development packages, lxde and a little more. I chose to start in runlevel 3 which is full networking without X. Still, when computer is booted it tries to start Xorg which doesn't work because of some problem w driver. The start-up seems to stop there, it never loads completely - seems most things in runlevel 3 are not started (see below) I can manually login on laptop and fix it - but never permanently, same thing again after reboot.
I have checked /etc/inittab & yast - both states default runlevel is 3. I have checked services to be started both directly, browsing directory /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/, and with YaST, it is very clear X should not load during boot. But, as said, it does.. I don't really care about the driver problem right now, I can fix that later when I have more time. So how do I stop X from getting started automatically?
More info, if needed: The installation also stopped with message on tty1 "Starting YaST2" and tty8 showing errors with graphics driver (mach64). The system seemed to be installed though, so I simply rebooted (issuing "reboot" from tty2).
[Code]....
I'm not completely sure where it stops, network is configured but keyboard is wrong and mysql & everything after is not started, so somewhere between S02network and S06kbd. I'm going to use it as a server for testing purposes so no X is actually needed - however I do want to have X & lxde installed just in case, my Internet connection at home is terribly slow so I need most things I might need in the future installed today.
After installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.
I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.
I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.
Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?
Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server
if this helps, here is the error message received when jack does not start when the normal duplex option is selected.

also, when i open alsamixer in the terminal for some reason the headphone part is greyed out, even when the sound is working before qjackctl is opened.
