Ubuntu Multimedia :: VLC - Hotkey For Changing Position In Media File
May 14, 2010
I love how totem handles using mousewheel up/down to change position in a media file. VLC doesn't do it the same way by default so I've been trying to find a way to replicate that feature. I found the appropriate actions and assigned mousewheel up/down for both the hotkey and global options. Unfortunately when I try to seek it only works if I mouse over the position bar or lower half of the application. If I am moused over the actual video the hotkeys don't work. In fullscreen the hotkeys don't work at all and I can only seek by holding my mouse over the position bar.

Is it possible to somehow open Nautilus file manager, or favorites, or places items using hotkey(s)? Simply going to the launcher just to open the file manager is annoying, and I'd really find it convenient to somehow launch the Nautilus using hotkey(s)

Okay running on 64bit karmic 9.10 i have been trying to get this .ts file to play nicely on vlc, but no success of getting it work nicely what so ever. It actually starts under VLC and gives image and sound but not the way i would prefer it. I don't quite get it but when i start it with vlc it actually displays it with lower resolution this is HD file, as its a stream capture from tv but it outputs it with much smaller resolution about 320 x 180. Tried it with other players too but the only one that accepted it nicely was xine "but problems ahead again" it outputs no sound? the image though was and is what it should be.
Tried it with Totem too and it did accept it too actually "hurray! but with the same symptoms as VLC + it doesn't output any sound out from the file only the image is what gets generated out from the player. I ran VLC from the terminal and it outputs following data when i start to play the file:
[Code]...
so if any ONE knows what should i do, feel free to step up and advise me would be appreciated (thanks in advance) If this has value if's mpeg2 ts file. And no...the file ain't corrupted that much i know, but what could generate this problem. If it ain't broken? Seeking works nice etc... except the low resolution display.

I have recently found a strange problem with my VLC Media Player, as it only has sound is certain file types, but on others it doesn't. I have tried to run .AVI files, and it plays sound, also tried .flv files, but with no luck. I am running Ubuntu 10.10.

If I start skipping through a movie or song that's playing, sometimes the program will totally freeze. It stops playing audio and video altogether. Similarly, if for instance I'm listening to a music playlist, often times when VLC skips to the next track it stops playing audio, but continues through the track like it's still playing. Once it reaches the end of the first track it had a problem with, it freezes altogether and I have to close the program. In fact, the program stays running even after I "x" out of it, and I have to kill the process in system monitor and restart VLC in order to restore functionality. This happens quite often (as in, a few times a day), and as I'm sure you can imagine, this gets quite annoying, lol.
I've looked in the various logs in Log Viewer, but I don't see any obvious problems. There are no error messages pertaining to VLC, or audio or video output so far as I can tell. I've also tried reinstalling VLC to no avail. I think the next thing I'll try is to remove it completely first, and then reinstall it....but if that doesn't work, is there anything else you guys think I should be looking at? Lucid is the first Ubuntu release that's worked well for me (9.04 and 9.10 had serious issues on my machine) so I'd like not to revert back to an older release just for VLC if at all possible.

How do I get vlc to start at a specific time in a media file. I can do it easily in mplayer2, mpv but not vlc. Let's say the media file is named abc.avi (file format, container not important for this example.) Also the running time is around 2+ hrs. In mplayer2 and mpv I can simply do :-
Code: Select all$mpv abc.avi --start=00:59:00
And it will start running at that point in time.
In vlc, it also seems to have something at :-
Code: Select all[$] vlc --advanced --help
......
......
Playback control:
--input-repeat <integer [-2147483648 .. 2147483647]>
Input repetitions
--start-time <float> Start time
Now I don't understand what the <float> bit. I tried :-
Code: Select all$vlc abc.avi --start-time=00:59:00
But that didn't work. It's possible that it might be a bug, then again I might not have done it correctly.

This appears to be a simple problem, but I struggled my way around google, trying to figure out the right words to search for, with no real success. The problem:When I plug-in any usb device or an external hard disk, my RedHat automatically mounts it to /media/<device_name>. Unfortunately, it's owner and group are both root, whereas, I would like to add other users to have write access (say, all users in a group usb_group to be able to write stuff in it). Currently only read access is there for others. I would like to change it to write access to a particular group and I can add the

I've written a bash script that extracts the audio out of a movie file and saves it out in separate .wav files using ffmpeg. Here is the key ffmpeg command:
Code:
ffmpeg -i $movie_file -vn -ss $start_time -t $duration ${file_name}_${counter}.wav
$start_time and $duration are floating point numbers that contain time information in the form of seconds and milliseconds (ss.xxx). It is important that I am able to control the time down to the millisecond.
My script works exactly as hoped on .avi files. My script needs to work on an existing archive of .mov files. when I try to use it on a .mov, the audio files created always have start times and durations that have been rounded up to the nearest half-second. This breaks up the audio in the wrong spots, and creates files that last too long and have too much extra audio. What can I do to make my ffmpeg command create .wav files from .mov files that properly recognize a specific number of milliseconds? Or, asked another way, how can I eliminate the rounding behavior?

One of the things I love most about SMPlayer is that it will pick up from the same spot at which the file was closed previously i.e. if I watched 20 minutes of a movie then had to go out, when I open up the file again it starts right at 20 minutes. I was wondering if anyone knew of any music player programs that do the same thing, I mostly listen to audiobooks so that feature would come in very handy. Currently I am using Rhythmbox.

Can't find similar thread with keyword like cairo dock dislocated position, so post my question here.
My kernel was upgrade to 4.0
Code: Select all4.0.0-2-rt-686-pae
then after rebooting the screen looks like where cairo dock's position is dislocated to the central screen. Also I can't edit gnome-terminal's profile such as changing font, and so on. Any place I can check what may go wrong? Or where to adjust the setting?

I only just upgraded to Squeeze and am now running Fluxbox 1.1.1. The toolbar is acting strangely, though, and I can't seem to find a solution online.
An example: I open Iceweasel, Thunar, and Icedove. If Iceweasel has focus, its window title will be on the left side of the toolbar. If I switch applications, and put that Thunar window in focus, the Thunar window title because the most-left item on the toolbar. I focus Icedove, Icedove's window title becomes the most left object on the toolbar and so on.

I have a dual-screen set-up with Ubuntu 10.10. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 video card. I use my lower-resolution laptop screen on the left and a larger monitor on the right. The monitor is also physically higher than the monitor. See attachment for a screenshot.I have correctly set up my displays so that if the mouse is in the middle of the screen it can move from one screen to the other without jumping. The jumping happens when moving off of one screen in an area where the other screen is not directly next to it (some people call this 'the void').
Example: (See the attachment for a visual example of this.) My mouse is in the external monitor (right monitor). As I move the mouse to the top-left of the monitor (position 1), I by mistake go a little too far and instead of hitting the Ubuntu applications menu, I ended up at the top-right of the laptop monitor (left monitor; position 2). I quickly realize my mistake and move the mouse back to the right monitor, but now the mouse is at the middle-left position (position 3).This same error occurs by moving the mouse on the laptop monitor (left monitor) passed the bottom-right position. This is a big problem when scrolling vertical scroll bars on the laptop monitor (left monitor).I am looking for a fix that if the mouse is at position 1 in the attachment and I move the mouse left, it stays at position 1 and does not go to position 2.

I have an NTFS volume on my system which I regularly access from within Ubuntu 9.10, mostly to play the plethora of DVD images (*.iso files) stored there. I use VLC Media Player to watch the content. For some reason, VLC's file browser only shows a small subset of the files by default. I have to select "All Files" instead of "Media Files" to see all the *.iso's.
What's this about? Since they're all the same type of file, I don't understand why some would be viewed as "media files" but others not. If the files were on a Linux-type filesystem (ext3 etc.) I would guess it had something to do with permissions, but I'm not sure how file ownership & permissions apply to a mounted NTFS volume.

I had opened Thunderbird and discovered I had no cursor control. Couldn't close it, couldn't exit it, couldn't switch windows. I couldn't even shut down using that button.
I figured there must be a kill command similar to Windoze cntrl + alt + del that would allow me to close that application. Is there such a keyboard hot key for doing this?
