Ubuntu :: Setting Up Hotkey For Terminal?
Feb 12, 2011
Last night I upgraded to 10.04. Previously I had a hotkey set up for running a terminal, but now i can't seem to get the system to recognize my preferences. I went to system->preferences->keyboard shortcuts and I set the hotkey I want to use, but I doesn't seem to save or something. What can I do to fix this?

I need a terminal application for linux with support for custom scripts and support to bind this scripts for hotkeys.For example I login into computers hundreds times a day. I don't want to write login and password, but to press a hotkey (Ctrl + Z for example) to automate this process. [input login, press Enter, input password, press enter, input some command...]

Where does Ubuntu store the profiles information for Terminal sessions (e.g., colors, title bar menu on/off, etc.)? I managed to turn off the menu then set that as a default and can't access the profiles menu any more.

sudo passwd myuser
I'm asked for my current password, but since I don't have one I press enter. I get: Sorry,try again.... hat's the correct way of doing this?

I am having trouble setting up a gnome-terminal to a specific profile. For example, when I open up R-cran I want the title to be 'R-cran'. And when I run Octave I would like the title to be 'Octave'. Pretty straight forward, so I thawt. So...I have been trying to set up and run different profiles for the different terminal windows that I want. I have set up 2 new profiles, 1) for R-cran 2) for Octave, each with their own titles.

I'm trying to connect to the internet though the terminal and I think i've determined my key is off.
Here is what I do:
Code:
So form this i go:
Code:
where the last four #### are actually the numbers but ii'm not sure if it's possible to reverse a wep. My connection uses wpa & wpa2 encryption but doesn't accept that key. I'm not sure what my key is supposed to look like or be but i'm pretty sure the key is whats keeping me from connecting. If I change my key while browsing the internet i can't get any information. So is it possible to just put in my pasword. Or what is the key supposed to look like?

In 10.4 I had set my default terminal size to my screen width - I type some long commands. After running an update this morning, my terminal comes up in the install default size. Using the preferences dialog, I cannot find the control to set the default width. Has it been removed? I hope I'm looking in the wrong place, but I have a chilling feeling that it's been dropped or perhaps just accidentally commented out.

I'm using the Gnome desktop in openSUSE 11.3. I've set the "Command" to gnome-terminal --geometry=80x58 for the Gnome terminal in its Launcher Properties. This opens a terminal of the size I want every time I click it. However, when I right-click the desktop and click "open in terminal" it opens a terminal of a much smaller size and I can't figure out how to correct this. The same thing happens when I click:
File->Open Terminal from a terminal window, and also when
I click File->Open in Terminal from from the File Browser.
Why am I getting a much smaller window and how to fix?

I had opened Thunderbird and discovered I had no cursor control. Couldn't close it, couldn't exit it, couldn't switch windows. I couldn't even shut down using that button.
I figured there must be a kill command similar to Windoze cntrl + alt + del that would allow me to close that application.Is there such a keyboard hot key for doing this?

linux newbie here -- there is a feature in windows 7 that I would love to make work here. I'm sure there is some way to do it, given how customizable linux is, but I have no idea how.
In windows 7, if you hit the Windows key + the left arrow, it will automatically resize the window you are looking at to fill half the screen, on the left side. Likewise if you push the right arrow, for the right side, Windows+up arrow maximizes, and windows + down arrow minimizes. Does anyone have an idea of how I can configure ubuntu to do the same thing?

I want t desktop cube, so I followed the ..... guide here.
When I enter simple compiz config and start to change the Ultimate profile, then I lose the ability to do key commands like alt+tab and consequently I cannot use things like the switcher, or cube. The only desktop hotkeys that I can currently do (that I know of) is ctrl+alt+left/right to move to next desktop. How do I enable hotkeys to work again?

after upgrading to 11.04, I can't use the fn-f2 combination anymore to activate the wifi card. I'm using a Dell latitude laptop. Wifi is functioning normally when it's on and I can even turn it off with the hotkeys. When I try to turn it back on, the light goes on for a second and than dims again. I than have to reboot into Windows to get it back on, which is kind of annoying.

I love how totem handles using mousewheel up/down to change position in a media file. VLC doesn't do it the same way by default so I've been trying to find a way to replicate that feature. I found the appropriate actions and assigned mousewheel up/down for both the hotkey and global options. Unfortunately when I try to seek it only works if I mouse over the position bar or lower half of the application. If I am moused over the actual video the hotkeys don't work. In fullscreen the hotkeys don't work at all and I can only seek by holding my mouse over the position bar.

I don't often use a full word processor, but the Mrs has started to do some freelancing and needs one. I told her that that OO was every bit as good as Microsoft Word.... In OO virtually NONE of the menu options have hotkey combos.. Are they always user defined? F'rinstance, no hotkey for word count, or even option to put a button on toolbar? She is threatening to start booting to Windows!!!

So I started playing with my hotkeys today, and much to my dismay, I seem to have irreversibly set the delete hotkey. This is extremely annoying now because instead of deleting the selected text, it executes the command that I put in. The problem is that that specific command is not listed under system>preferences>keyboard shortcuts. Somehow I set it to open the terminal, and now I can't turn it off. (One thing to note, though, is that I can set another command to do nothing with delete as the hotkey. Then terminal doesn't open, but I still can't use the key!)

I want to run /etc/acpi/actions/blank.sh as a regular user, but it will only run as root. I am trying to setup a keyboard shortcut to run the above script without success. I can run the file blank.sh as root, but not as regular user. Basically I went to: System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts, and added a shortcut to blank the screen. I used the name: Blank Screen, the command: /etc/acpi/actions/blank.sh, and the shortcut: XF86Launch1. XF86Launch1 corresponds to the extra "Access IBM" key found on my keyboard. xev confirms that pressing the "Access IBM" key gives the keycode XF86Launch1. I can launch other programs such as firefox using this method. Here is the actual file blank.sh:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
RADEONTOOL='/usr/sbin/radeontool'
STATUS=`$RADEONTOOL light|awk '/The radeon backlight looks / {print $5}'`;
[code]....
The better method would be to get /etc/acpi/events/blank to accept a hotkey sequence, but this seems broken in Fedora 11. The file blank:
Code:
event=ibm/hotkey HKEY 00000080 00001001
action=/etc/acpi/actions/blank.sh
acpi_listen for keys Fn+F1 reports: ibm/hotkey HKEY 00000080 00001001, but the above file is not being executed.

I'm using Mint9, and making labels with openoffice writer. I find myself going through a bunch of keystrokes every little while that I'd like to convert to a macro or two to simplify my work. "alt-vzpo" and then "alt-vzwo" to change the view first to "page width" and then to "whole page".
Id like to have a macro or hotkey or shortcut to toggle those two, or two separate ones to accomplish each.
What I'm thinking is to build them into environmental variables to be established when I start openoffice writer (With a command line) and then to remove those environmental variables when I exit. I used to do similar things in DOS, but it's been a long time and this isn't DOS.
Is there a better way? Or if that would be the best way, how do I go about writing a script that will do that? Or would it even work?

How can I define a hotkey which will raise (and ideally also lower) a specific window or application?. Assuming epiphany is minimized, pressing F5 will raise the epiphany window. Pressing F5 again will minimize it. Something like guake/tilda.

I've been pulling my teeth out trying to find out a way to automatically save a screenshot to a folder by pressing a hotkey, and append a counter or timestamp to the end of the filename. I found this which works well
import -window root ~/screenshot.png
but I need a way to add a counter so that it doesnt constantly override the same file when I press the hotkey, but will save a new screenshot in the same folder.
I've been looking at bash commands and scripts for the past 3 hours but haven't found it yet, and it seems like it should be an easy task to perform.
