Ubuntu :: Hotkey To Kill Application?

May 14, 2011

I had opened Thunderbird and discovered I had no cursor control. Couldn't close it, couldn't exit it, couldn't switch windows. I couldn't even shut down using that button.

I figured there must be a kill command similar to Windoze cntrl + alt + del that would allow me to close that application.Is there such a keyboard hot key for doing this?

Fedora :: Hotkey Doesn't Work When A Menu Is Showed Or 3d Application Is Started?

Jun 20, 2010

I would like to know if there is a solution to this problem. The multimedia hotkeys (play/pause, stop, volume up/down, volume mute, ecc) stop working when i open any menu (for example mintmenu, that i use, or any menu of firefox like bookmarks) or if i start an application, such as openarena. The major problem is for volumes keys, that stop working in these cases.

Any ideas? I tried to change keyboard model, disable hotkeys mapped in prefereces->keyboard shortcut (with this they just stop working), but nothing changed.

Ubuntu :: Kill Application Automatically After Login?

Jan 9, 2011

I am using kvkbd as an onscreen keyboard and I have it set to start on the login screen but after I login I want the keyboard to close and I can not get this to work. At the bottom of /etc/gdm/Init/DefaultI added the line.Code:exec kvkbd&This works great and kvkbd starts up and even puts a panel icon at the bottom of the login screen but after the login the keyboard is still there?I have tried making a launcher and adding it to the startup applications. I wrote a script and put it in the /usr/sbin and /usr/bin and also added a line at the bottom of my /etc/rc.local that should have run that same script to kill kvkbd and nothing. The really weird thing is that the launcher that I made would work if I double clicked on it but if i had it set to run as a startup application it would not work.

Ubuntu :: How To Kill Unresponsive Terminal Application

Feb 7, 2011

I just ran "mysqld" manually in the terminal, but now I can't quit it and go back to bash. I've tried CTRL+C and typing "reset", but neither do anything. Anything I type is just ignored. I've had this numerous times in the past with various operating systems and in various scenario's, hence why I'm seeking the solution. Is there some universal hotkey to quit the currently running application or something? I guess I'm looking for a way to send SIGQUIT, SIGTERM or possibly even a EOF signal?

Ubuntu :: Customizing A Window Sizing Hotkey?

May 5, 2010

linux newbie here -- there is a feature in windows 7 that I would love to make work here. I'm sure there is some way to do it, given how customizable linux is, but I have no idea how.

In windows 7, if you hit the Windows key + the left arrow, it will automatically resize the window you are looking at to fill half the screen, on the left side. Likewise if you push the right arrow, for the right side, Windows+up arrow maximizes, and windows + down arrow minimizes. Does anyone have an idea of how I can configure ubuntu to do the same thing?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: VLC - Hotkey For Changing Position In Media File

May 14, 2010

I love how totem handles using mousewheel up/down to change position in a media file. VLC doesn't do it the same way by default so I've been trying to find a way to replicate that feature. I found the appropriate actions and assigned mousewheel up/down for both the hotkey and global options. Unfortunately when I try to seek it only works if I mouse over the position bar or lower half of the application. If I am moused over the actual video the hotkeys don't work. In fullscreen the hotkeys don't work at all and I can only seek by holding my mouse over the position bar.

Software :: Fedora 13 Delete Hotkey Permanent?

Jul 13, 2010

So I started playing with my hotkeys today, and much to my dismay, I seem to have irreversibly set the delete hotkey. This is extremely annoying now because instead of deleting the selected text, it executes the command that I put in. The problem is that that specific command is not listed under system>preferences>keyboard shortcuts. Somehow I set it to open the terminal, and now I can't turn it off. (One thing to note, though, is that I can set another command to do nothing with delete as the hotkey. Then terminal doesn't open, but I still can't use the key!)

Fedora :: Hotkey : Run Shell Script As Regular User?

Aug 15, 2009

I want to run /etc/acpi/actions/blank.sh as a regular user, but it will only run as root. I am trying to setup a keyboard shortcut to run the above script without success. I can run the file blank.sh as root, but not as regular user. Basically I went to: System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts, and added a shortcut to blank the screen. I used the name: Blank Screen, the command: /etc/acpi/actions/blank.sh, and the shortcut: XF86Launch1. XF86Launch1 corresponds to the extra "Access IBM" key found on my keyboard. xev confirms that pressing the "Access IBM" key gives the keycode XF86Launch1. I can launch other programs such as firefox using this method. Here is the actual file blank.sh:

Code:

#!/bin/bash
RADEONTOOL='/usr/sbin/radeontool'
STATUS=`$RADEONTOOL light|awk '/The radeon backlight looks / {print $5}'`;

[code]....

The better method would be to get /etc/acpi/events/blank to accept a hotkey sequence, but this seems broken in Fedora 11. The file blank:

Code:

event=ibm/hotkey HKEY 00000080 00001001
action=/etc/acpi/actions/blank.sh
acpi_listen for keys Fn+F1 reports: ibm/hotkey HKEY 00000080 00001001, but the above file is not being executed.

Software :: Temporary Hotkey Or Shortcut In Openoffice Writer ?

Jul 13, 2010

I'm using Mint9, and making labels with openoffice writer. I find myself going through a bunch of keystrokes every little while that I'd like to convert to a macro or two to simplify my work. "alt-vzpo" and then "alt-vzwo" to change the view first to "page width" and then to "whole page".

Id like to have a macro or hotkey or shortcut to toggle those two, or two separate ones to accomplish each.

What I'm thinking is to build them into environmental variables to be established when I start openoffice writer (With a command line) and then to remove those environmental variables when I exit. I used to do similar things in DOS, but it's been a long time and this isn't DOS.

Is there a better way? Or if that would be the best way, how do I go about writing a script that will do that? Or would it even work?

Ubuntu Installation :: UNR 10.4 On New Acer Aspire One 751h (11.6") - Screen Brightness Can't Be Adjusted With The Function Key / Hotkey Combination

Jun 10, 2010

Last weekend I installed Ubuntu 10.4 (Netbook remix) on my new Acer Aspire 751h. The installation seemed to go smoothly, but I've noticed several things that don't work as well as on my old AA 110. I should say that I installed Ubuntu in a dual-boot setup with Windows XP, which the machine already had installed. Firstly, the screen brightness can't be adjusted with the function key/hotkey combination. The sound volume hotkeys work fine, and the brightness hotkeys work with XP, so it's not a hardware issue. The default brightness is pretty dim, so this is an annoying problem. Is there a way to bind the hotkeys to the 'increase/decrease brightness' functions?

Secondly, the vertical scroll bar on the desktop doesn't work, by which I mean if I click above or below the highlighted area no scrolling takes place. However, I can drag the highlighted area up or down and scrolling does take place, and scrolling via the touchpad works. All forms of scrolling work normally within applications. Is there anything I can do to fix this? It's only a mild annoyance, though. Thirdly, in the power management preferences application I don't have an 'On Battery Power' tab - just 'On Mains Power' and 'General'. There are some other peculiarities that probably follow on from this. I have a power indicator in the top panel of the desktop, but on bootup it's a 'lightning bolt' icon rather than the battery-shaped icon it should be. If I plug into mains power, it changes to a battery-shaped 'charging' icon until it's fully-charged, when it changes back to the lightning bolt. If I then unplug the mains power, I get a battery-shaped 'discharging' icon, but this doesn't survive a restart. Obviously, a battery level indicator is very useful and I'd like to get it working properly. The help file for power management preferences says something about GConf policy keys that need to be made writable in order to display some sliders and option boxes. I certainly don't have as many sliders and options as shown in the help file. I guess this might be related to the screen brightness problem.

Finally (for now - I haven't explored everything yet) the screen ratio looks wrong. Circular icons appear as ovals. It looks like the software thinks I've got a 4:3 ratio whereas really it's widescreen. I can't see where I can change this. I've looked in 'System.. Preferences. Monitors' but there's nothing I can change there. System testing shows the apparent resolution at 1024x768, whereas the hardware spec is 1366x768. I'm wondering whether to try to fix these things individually or whether a better option might be a reinstall - perhaps without the XP dual boot. What do you think? I'm willing to change settings from the terminal but I'd need to be told exactly where to go and what to do.
