I have a primary language, Italian, and I want also use a secondary language, English. I want to switch language in order to have all the writings and messages in English not to write special characters by keyboard. I switched language in both kde system settings>Regional & language and in yast system>language leaving the keyboard layout Italian, but in the kde menu (the lizard on the left of panel) the groups of applications (multimedia, giochi, sistema) are in Italian and yast too (impostazioni amministratore), instead others are in English.
1)is this a bug or I forgot something?
2)which is the differences switching languages by yast and by kde system settings?
3)Is it possible to switch language and don't restart or logout the system?

As a normal user I have activated the functions of the Quit applet, i.e. Logout, Shutdown and Restart are active buttons. I am able to restart or shutdown, no problems. But when I use the Logout button I don't get logged out, just returned to the login shell & I am still logged in as my user. I don't have a display manager installed and I do NOT want to use a display manager such as XDM or GDM. How do I get the Logout button to actually logout the user? It appears I am only getting logged out of the x-session, but I want complete logout.

I've already gotten into the .mozilla folder and found the profiles.ini file. My windows XP system has it's Documents and Settings folder on a seperate drive (D:Documents and settings) And I've located the profile (application datamozillafirefoxprofiles) Now all I need to do is put the path into the profiles.ini file in the .mozilla folder in Ubuntu. The problem is I don't know exactly how to format it.
In windows the path is:
How would I translate this into something ubuntu "follows?" I already have the profile name changed as well.

I have a fresh install of kubuntu 9.10 which only seems to play the start up and shut down noise. Audio from games, flash videos, and other sources do not appear to work.
I've been searching around, and while there seem to be a few threads on this topic, none have solutions. Where should I begin?

I am having trouble getting my logout sound to play. All my sounds work, the window sounds work, as well as the login, but I cannot get my logout sound to play. I have looked at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...io/+bug/214370, tried many of the solutions(ex. installing esound package) there, but to no avail. could pulseaudio be the problem? could it be just some code in a file? Has anyone figured this out?

like the title says, after working in GIMP for, like, 5 minutes, my session suddenly closes and I have to login again. I have been looking a lot of time for a solution, but I've not seen anyone with this problem... does anyone of you have some kind of solution? I'm desperate. I really need to use it, and I don't want to use Wine+Photoshop, I don't like to rely on windows programs.

Since I can remember, Logout sound never plays in Ubuntu, or maybe the problem is Compiz + Gnome. A very similar problem occurs in KDE (Kubuntu), but here the problem is No Login sound.
Gnome + Compiz: Good Login sound, No Logout sound.
KDE: No Login Sound, good Logout sound.
So, what is the problem with Login/Logout sounds in Linux now? I have used the last 4 Ubuntu releases, and Logout sound never plays in Ubuntu(gnome). How could a fix that?

I was reading some threads this morning and saw mention of the envy script. I wondered if it would make a big difference in graphics (nothing was wrong just curious is all) and downloaded the script. I ran it and there was only one listing for an ATI driver. I installed it and upon reboot I a notification pops up in place of my desktop. It says something about having to use low-res. The thing is it won't even use low-res. I get a box with three choices on it. Use the default, create a new profile, ***something else I forget*** and none of these logs me into desktop.
I blindly checked through some of the boxes and saw some logs. I'm using my dual-boot to type this message. This is on my R51e that has an ATI X200M card. What do I do?
EDIT: So upon reading some threads it seems I will most likely have to reinstall the OS? Am I allowed to throw a temper tantrum here???
I implore anyone who knows how to remove that 8.66***some other numbers*** driver and go back to the default one! I don't think I'll be mucking around with these types of things again!

I just installed debian unstable with kde 4.4.5 on a new hp desktop. Just about everything is working fine except when I try to logout or shutdown by right clicking on the desktop. No matter which option I choose--logout, shutdown, or restart--the screen goes black and nothing happens. I'm forced to do a hard shutdown or use alt-SysRq-B to reboot. I can reboot or shutdown using the command line when logged into kde.

I seem to have no end of strange problems. Ctl-Alt-Del no longer presents me with the logout/shutdown dialog. I have no idea what caused it to disappear. I have to use Ctl-Alt-Backspace to kill X now in order to shutdown, reboot, or log in as a different user. I can't find any setting in kdmrc that might affect this. I'm running straight squeeze. I have been removing and re-installing a variety of packages, (see my post on Kaffeine, e.g.) but have not seen any errors or found any broken packages.

In usr/share/banshee-1/audio-profiles/ there is an audio profile called "aac-novell", which is used to encode CDs to m4a format.
The problem is, this audio profile does not appear in Banshee itself, and I don't know what the problem could be (I've got every AAC encoder dependency installed).
Has someone been able to use this audio profile?

I've got a new monitor which has a .icm profile on the CD. I would like to calibrate my monitor and found lprof. It's got a nice GUI but to someone new to the whole monitor calibration ballgame it's not that easy to work out. Is there a way I can simply import the .icm profile? Is that enough, or do I need to do more set-up after that? Do the changes in lprof affect everything that appears on my screen? (I mean, once it's set-up, I don't have to apply anything to various applications like gimp/digicam?)

I can get sound out of my machine just fine, but for some reason, no matter what audio player I use, every time I change the song or pause playing half my speakers will kill sound and it will seem like the sound profile has reverted to Analog Surround 5.0 Output. When I check my sound configuration it still lists 5.1, and I have to select another setting then change it back to 5.1 to get my speakers all functioning again.

Ubuntu 10.10 x64. Got a second monitor and enabled Xinerama. It asked me to restart, I did. I opened ATI Catalyst Control Center after the restart and saw the control panel window open for about half a second before suddenly finding myself at the login screen.
ATI Catalyst Control Center has always seemed to work fine up until I enabled Xinerama. I tried removing the ATI driver, restarting, re-enabling it, restarting, and ATI Catalyst Control Center worked fine again. But, as soon as I enabled Xinerama it went back to logging me out whenever I tried to open the control center. I've tried from the GUI menu as well as the terminal using 'gksudo amdcccle', same result every time.
The dual monitor functionality seems fine, but I need to get back into the control center to adjust the colors. I do a lot of photo editing, and the adjustments in the control center really is a great tool to let me get the colors how I'd like.

I have a problem with garbled graphics after resuming from hibernate or logging out (when the screen blinks and goes back to the display manager). It only occurs when I do either, about half the time. What happens is the edges of everything "bleed" horizontally (left to right) in red and green colors and black text on a white background becomes entirely unreadable (but white text on a black background is readable and just looks a little bolder). If I shut down or restart the computer (softly) when the screen has garbled, then it will freeze and not even the SysRq keys work (I have enabled it in /etc/sysctl.conf). Then the only thing left is to do a hard restart (in which case there's a voice saying "System failed VGA test" before BIOS/GRUB loads) or poweroff. Powering it off and then starting it again works fine. I did a google image search and this is sort of how it looks when it freezes: link
Once the screen has garbled (but only if it hasn't frozen) I can use SysRq to issue S E S I S U O to shut it off and then power it on, and that works: then I get a non-garbled command line after sigterm and it shuts off and starts up properly. If I issue B instead of O (to restart) I get the "System failed VGA test" on boot (but it doesn't freeze when shutting down). Hibernation is easy enough to fix by just turning it off (it's not a laptop so I don't need it anyway), but it still happens sometimes when I log out. So as long as I never change users the system works perfectly and this never happens. I've tried GNOME, Xfce4, OpenBox without any DE, gdm3 and SLiM and the problem persists in all of them.
Some system details:
Debian Squeeze i386 (using only software from the stable main repository)
Kernel: 2.6.32-5-686
Video card: ATI Radeon 9600SE (using the preinstalled open source drivers)
Motherboard: ASUS P4P 800-E
By the way: sometimes when it's in the process of shutting off (when the display hasn't been corrupted), after it kills all graphical applications, I can see that the CLI text gets the garbled look, but at that point the poweroff works without freezing. This is the most similar sounding bug that I could find: [URL]. Unfortunately I can't find a solution to it, and most people who have similar problems seem to get either the garbled graphics or the freezes, but not both. Also: how safe is it to keep shutting off with SysRq to recover from this? Can I get disk errors?

This problem has lasted for several months, but I can't find anything like bug report in debian related website.
Basically my problem is after genome-terminal (version 3.4.1.1) is launched, I want to change profile setting such as font, color, etc. However, when I click the button `Edit > Profiles > Edit`, nothing happens (no dialogue pop up). `Edit > Profiles > New` And `Edit > Profiles > Delete` function correctly.

Starting around two weeks ago, Iceweasel began closing at unpredictable intervals for no apparent reason. When I ran it in GDB, it came up as a segfault, though the backtraces were different each time. It would even do this in safe mode, though it generally took longer. Icedove began doing the same thing around the same time.
So, I decided to reset my profile and start over. But now it's still segfaulting, even in safe mode.
A cursory use of memtester didn't turn up anything unusual.
Could it be some browser addon that is causing problems even when it's not activated?
If so, why is Icedove doing the same thing occasionally?
The biggest problem is that it's intermittent, so I would have to use my browser with a new profile for a long time before I could confirm that the problem is actually fixed.

I have dual boot Win Vista and karmic. I use Vista for recording music and Karmic for all my other work. But Vista is unbearable (especially after discovering ubuntu). I want to move my music to linux environment as well. I have Phonic Firefly 302 USB audio interface, m-audio key rig 49 MIDI controller.
Should I try to set these up in ubuntu, or should I install a different distro on (eg., ubuntu studio or whatever). How do I get these recognized. What software should I go for (I use Tracktion and Reason in Vista)?

I'm using an IOGEAR KVM Switch to switch between my newly built PC and Xbox 360. I've been using it for a while on my 360 with no problems, but to switch inputs you have to use a hotkey on a keyboard that is connected to the KVM switch (there is no button on the KVM switch to toggle between inputs). My KVM switch is compatible with Linux, but each time I plug in my Logitech Wired Wave keyboard into my KVM switch and use the hotkey it fails to switch the input. The hotkey is the Scroll Lock key on the keyboard, and the Logitech Wired Wave keyboard doesn't have a key dedicated to that function.
So I use the key combo for Scroll Lock, which is Fn + Pause/Break. I haven't mapped out all the keys on this keyboard yet, but I figured it should already be mapped out, since all the other basic keyboard keys are working. I managed to switch the toggle key from tapping the Scroll Lock key (combo) twice to tapping the Control key twice, after finally figuring out the manual's long and convoluted key combinations to change the input toggle key setting. If anyone else encounters this problem I would direct you to the Page 11 of the product manual, which is available at the product page linked to above.

I wanted to take an audio feed from a stereo amplifier into my HP Pavilion DV6 laptop, in order to digitally record some old vinyl.
In the Sound Preferences tab, I seemed to be able to record easily from the internal mic, but there seemed to be no easy way to switch the preferences to enable recording from the Line In socket on the laptop.
We tried muting the mic, this only caused the system to record nothing. We also tried all the various available options in "the Hardware Profiles" tab, "Settings for the available device", but no the laptop seemed to be getting no "line in" input with whatever profile we tried.
On Mac, it was as simple as switching the input sound preferences from "internal mic" to "line in".
