I have a fresh install of kubuntu 9.10 which only seems to play the start up and shut down noise. Audio from games, flash videos, and other sources do not appear to work.
I've been searching around, and while there seem to be a few threads on this topic, none have solutions. Where should I begin?
How do you change the login and logout sound. Replacing the files in /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo doesn't work.

I have looked at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...io/+bug/214370, tried many of the solutions(ex. installing esound package) there, but to no avail. could pulseaudio be the problem? could it be just some code in a file? Has anyone figured this out?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince I can remember, Logout sound never plays in Ubuntu, or maybe the problem is Compiz + Gnome. A very similar problem occurs in KDE (Kubuntu), but here the problem is No Login sound.
Gnome + Compiz: Good Login sound, No Logout sound.
KDE: No Login Sound, good Logout sound.
So, what is the problem with Login/Logout sounds in Linux now? I have used the last 4 Ubuntu releases, and Logout sound never plays in Ubuntu(gnome).How could a fix that?

I hear no login sound when I login to my ubuntu. I checked at startup applications and found GNOME login sound is enabled. The command used there is

Its not only this, but there is no other sounds enabled - for mouse clicks etc
Running Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 and Compiz with cube enabled. I have a BTC 5100 PS/2 mini keyboard, and if keyboard layout is set to USA it works fine. Keyboard model is set to "Generic 105-key (Intl) PC" and I don't see an entry for BTC 5100.
But every time I logout or reboot, the system adds an entry for "USA International (with dead keys)" below the entry for "USA" in the keyboard layouts tab and then I lose keys like the apostrophe key. I have no idea where these setting are kept. I've checked .gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/%gconf.xml, but see no change when I blow the second keyboard layout away.
Meerkat user and loving it so far. However, I've noticed a weird glitch in Ubuntu: when I boot up, everything works fine. However, if I logout and log back in, the panels are different! Instead of the black ones, the panels are now grey with different icons.
I've tried restarting the panels using gconftool and pkill gnome but it didn't work. Any suggestions? I've attached a screenshot for reference.
So I have Ubuntu Lucid machines about 20 of them. Configured via ldap authentication. I seem to be running into a rather strange logout problem. Whenever users click logout they're logged out, however after that all i get is the background screen with the cursor. The cursor is able to move, but no login screen.If i go to a terminal window alt+f1 and do a service gdm restart, then the login screen goes back to normal.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI experience the following issue with Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64, kernel 2.6.32-25-generic: When I login after having logged out, the theme is reset from Radiance to a quite coarse one withs grey folders and very basic icons. System|Preferences|Appearance->Theme tab just considers it Custom. No change to window borders, and trying to change the theme just affects the borders. Does not happen on a Ubuntu 10.10 32 bits installation.

This problem showed up on two computers after a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 followed by an install of the Kubuntu desktop. Might as well install Kubuntu desktop because some of the utilities I like to use (Kate, Krusader, etc) require that major parts of it be installed anyway. What appears to be happening is that the user-dirs.dir folder is getting ignored and is overwritten either on logout or login and the ~/Desktop folder is being deleted.
i have installed Ubuntu 11.04 beta release 64 bit and frequently updating with latest updates(allmost all). now i'm having some problem, while i'm login to GUI interface it shows a blank screen(seems logging) and in the next screen it shows login screen again.(Immediate logout). i found some messages from syslog like below:

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I start my computer, my comp is set to require password everytime I start the computer. I am using Karmic with all the latest updates. One day, from the Login Screen itself, I selected the Power icon at the bottom right and selected Shut Down. But, from next boot, the login drum sound wouldnt play and even the african sound that comes after logging in wouldn't play. The african sound problem was solved when I noticed that my sound was muted by the GDM on shutdown. However, the drum sound still does not come. I think the solution it to change the volume before logging in.

Only ever use the KDE desktop so completely removed XFE and the rudimentary Gnome left behind on the install.
Not a desperate problem just an annoyance.
Everything works fine, except if I logout the next login screen is using a really tiny font and I can't seem to find anywhere to change it.
The DPI must be about 10, as I can't even read it when blown up on my projector.

A few minutes ago I was using google chrome when suddenly the scroll-lock indicator on my keyboard turned on... I pressed the scroll-lock key, but nothing happened, the light remained. I opened a terminal and ran "top" to find what processes were running when I was automatically logged out. I logged back and checked the logs and found the following entries in my auth.log:

I've just made a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04. When I right-click a panel and choose "New Panel", the panel is made, but is not visible. The panel is placed on the left side of the screen, and icons on the desktop is moved to the right. Also windows does not use the full width of the screen when maximized. I've tried to remove the panel configuration in my home directory, logout and login, installing ATI drivers and running a gnome-panel command (from another post on ubuntu forums), but nothing works.

I was trying to update software and it told me to log out and login again. When I tried to login it told that there is a problem and I need to log out and to login again and it kept repeating the message and fedora is not working at all and before that it wasn't working right it kept suspending without reason and each time I turn the laptop off from the power button.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAs a normal user I have activated the functions of the Quit applet, i.e. Logout, Shutdown and Restart are active buttons. I am able to restart or shutdown, no problems. But when I use the Logout button I don't get logged out, just returned to the login shell & I am still logged in as my user. I don't have a display manager installed and I do NOT want to use a display manager such as XDM or GDM. How do I get the Logout button to actually logout the user? It appears I am only getting logged out of the x-session, but I want complete logout.

Around then, then I cold boot and log in, Ubuntu starts in "Ubuntu Classic" desktop. If I log out then back in, Unity starts as expected.In both cases of my logging in, Ubuntu Classic is not selected - Ubuntu is, which should start the UI under Unity.

What I want is really a combination of two things: Unison, which enables me to work without a network connection. An SFTP filesystem so that changes are immediatly sent to the server, not JUST at login and logout, which makes login and logout extremely slow. Is there any combination I could use? Could I make unison sync extremely frequently?

Just about everything is working fine except when I try to logout or shutdown by right clicking on the desktop. No matter which option I choose--logout, shutdown, or restart--the screen goes black and nothing happens. I'm forced to do a hard shutdown or use alt-SysRq-B to reboot. I can reboot or shutdown using the command line when logged into kde.
