Jun 11, 2010i recently installed Ubuntu and the USB soundcard worked just fine, but when i changed the "Connector" in Sound Preferences (Output tab) the output stopped working (= no sound). Input still works. Sound did not come back even when i changed the Connector setting back (I hear no sound when its set to Analog Output as well as Analog Headphones, which are the only 2 setting).

Nov 23, 2010I have a Sony Vaio VPCZ128. It has a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M GPU with CUDA Technology (SPEED MODE) and Intel HD Graphics (STAMINA MODE) (switchable). The Processor is an Intel Core i7-620M with 2.66 GHz and the Chipset from Intel HM57 Express chipset.
Finally I successfully installed Ubuntu 10.10 (mainly following the advice on [URL] and using his kernel). Every thing is working fine including sound (still a few minor problems with backlight and Fn F5/F6). But I still desperately try to get the internal microphone running.

Changing the index of snd-usb-audio to 1 does not work.
I am trying very hard last days to fix that problem with no success. Kernel i am running is 3.2.0-4-amd64. Last days i had compiled 3.14 but i dont know if i messed up the configuration for device drivers etc. I certainly want kernel 3.4-lowlatency configured but i dont know what device drivers should be included in menuconfig. Also i do not know for sure if it is a permission issue.

Jan 22, 2011On my Sony Vaio VPCF12M1E I have a small but irritating problem: Since yesterday the numeric pad on my keyboard doesn't work anymore. I can use the numbers at the top, but not on my numpad. This happened out of nowhere when I was just setting up an access point. No idea what I did wrong, cause I only configured a static IP Reboot, and numpad was gone. I tried restarting the laptop, I tried disabling and enabling Numlock over and over again. Nothing works.

Jun 22, 2011I just did a clean install of the newest version of Ubuntu (11.4?) on my Sony Vaio CW. I was able to use the WiFi at my friends house where I installed it. At home when I entered the pass for the internet it would try connecting and five minutes later be back asking for the pass again. It won't connect at my house or my grandparent's house. They both have a protected internet but my friend does also and I was able to connect to his.

Jul 25, 2011I was, untill very recently, using ubuntu 10.10, and have just upgraded. In Ubuntu 10.10, I was easily able to record sound from my sound card in audacity. For whatever reason, since upgrading I have been unable to do so. I have no problem recording sound from my laptop's microphone, but can't seem to find an option to record from the sound card. I believe it's the same version of Audacity, so all I can assume is that it's an Ubuntu issue.

May 28, 2010I have an MSI S420 with a realtek alc883 onboard. I upgraded from ubutu 8.04 to 10.4 recently, The sound worked in 8.04 although the mic did't work and the same thing in 8.10 (i went through all upgrades) it stopped working at all in 9.04 onwards.
If i did Lspci -v it did say the name of my card, ( I unmuted all in alsamixer and got the codecs but even a test soud won't work) I also dowloaded a driver from Realtek itself, that didn't work.
Then I edited alsabace.conf some more. I tried every one that could possily be it at [URL] including all that said MSI.
I then tried Lordraidens comprehensive sound guide from step 1 to step 5, I used the module-assistant and istalled a driver that was called "hda-realtek-codec" or so. It was the only appropriate one on the list.
I also run into someoe with thesame problem. [URL]
i think ill give up and use the 8.10 that is still on a other partition

Jul 9, 2010I'm having a rather peculiar problem with sound in Ubuntu 10.04. Specifically, every time I reboot I run through a cycle of sorts:
A). Sound is working fine. Reboot
B). No sound. "aplay -l" returns "no card found". Additionally, the hibernate and suspend buttons are missing from the shutdown menu and restart acts as log out, immediately returning me to the log in screen (sudo reboot in console works). I try to fix the problem by the following commands:

I have "linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic" installed. I have been experiencing problems with audio since I bought this M/B, but with 9.10 things were stable and with my previous 10.04 installation bearable. Now, however, I practically can't work. I have to run the aforementioned routine every time I reboot. Additionally, I don't if it is relevant, but the problems started after I installed the audio drivers in Windows (another royal mess, but at least now it's stable and it works)

Sep 2, 2010I own an external usb soundcard: Creative Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1. After some tweaking around Multimedia Settings, (K)Ubuntu 9.10 successfully detected the card. I can now use it.
However, setting the sound level in KMixer does not work at all - KMixer now only contains a Microphone channel. Using hotkeys, I can still turn volume from 0 to 100%, but that has no effect on the volume produced by the soundcard. The sound card comes with a sound joggle, but turning it left or right has no effect whatsoever on the volume level.
Is there a way to solve either of these issues? p.s. Also, the card came with a Windows app and driver cd.

Oct 19, 2010I just upgraded to 10.10 64-bit from 10.04 64-bit and my external monitor is no longer working properly. Using the "Monitors" function in preferences, it does recognize my monitor and does in fact activate it, but the total available screen real estate is only increased by 10-15 pixels (i.e. my mouse moves to the external monitor, but it stops after 10-15 pixels). Thinking that something went wrong with the upgrade, I backed up my data and did a clean install from CD after format and the problem is the same.

Nov 29, 2010Got this new Sony from BB on black friday. I also have the pcg-7184l that works fine and the specs looked very similar. Everything seems to work but the touch pad. I am running able to use a USB mouse with no issue. A search online has not been fruitful so now to ask the community. I am willing to start from basics because I am either overlooked something or missing something. On hardware info all I show is the Sony Jogdial and the USB mouse under mouse. That is making me think that HAL is not even detecting the hardware. According to Sony the windows driver is ALPS so for some reason this one is not being detected by the kernel. I had done a clean install and then updates but the touchpad still does not seem to work in Linux but it was working under Windows7 (has since been removed but I do have an image if I have to restore back to windows.
