I am using a MSI GX630 Laptop with Xubuntu 11.04 installed. I am attempting to use a logitech H230 headset (here) which works fine on other computers running windows but is now not working in Xubuntu.
when plugged in, the headphone work, but skype does not record any sound from the microphone.
I am happy to provide any additional information I can, hopefully someone can help me.
I am studying abroad in Sweden and need my microphone working to speak with my family in the states. I also have an internal microphone which is does not seem to be working (thread here)

When I started using Slackware I've been using USB headset. Everything ran perfectly fine. They got recognized, I could use all of it's functions and so on. Unfortunately volume control on them stopped working so I had to service them, and like in every third world country, yay I need to wait minimum three weeks just so they can press a button and say "Yup, they don't work".
I bought normal headset to use them while other one is getting fixed, and didn't expect any problems with them considering they are "old" technology, normal audio input and output.
Now problem is following, sound works fine but microphone doesn't. Once I managed to "fix" it by switching audio input from mic to something else and then back to mic, now even that doesn't work. Another... "problem" is if I leave my USB webcam plugged in while booting computer, there is no sound at all, ether on line ones or USB ones but I can easily solve that problem by unplugging webcam, rebooting and plugging it back in later.
Now everything ran fine until my computer shutdown while I was sleeping. Don't know why, but it started happening recently, don't see anything smart in logs so I assume its... something, read it could be cache, HDD, temperature and so on but since logs don't write down anything smart... will deal with it some other time.
When I talk I can actually hear myself on the headset, which probably means that they work. If I put mic boost all the way up, I can hear myself perfectly clear, but somehow... seems that that information just doesn't get to Slackware, well it gets somewhat considering that it reacts to me adjusting mic boost on KMix, but everything else... no.
Arecord doesn't record anything, TS register as microphone isn't plugged in at all, skype doesn't get any input ether.

I had difficulty getting my internal microphone -
p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC272 Analog [ALC272 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
I was able to get it to work in the Sound Recorder Application and in the System Testing function, but when I do the Skype Test Call, or call someone with Skype, while I can hear the other person perfectly well, my microphone does not appear to work at all, so it is a strictly one way conversation.
I've made sure with the ALSA Mixer that everything is turned on, and all my sound settings are fine, but microphone won't work in Skype.

I have been an OpenSuse 11.2 user since the past 8 months. Recently I had a issue with the operating system and therefore had to re-install the OS again. However, since the fresh install, I have not been able to capture any sound from my laptop's microphone. This is weird because it used to work fine with OpenSuse 11.2 before I had to re-install the same OS again. Additionally I can assure that there are no issues with the hardware since it works fine with Windows 7. I have tried almost everything, but in vain.

Today I spent more than an hour trying to get Skype set up on my Linux box (Debian testing), but I couldn't make my microphone to work correctly. So I hear the other person talking, but they can't hear me. I am running KDE 4.3 and Skype 2.1 Beta. What do I need to do to get it working?

My Internet videos and sounds work, but when i went into call skype test, they said my microphone was not working. I also tried to test my video and that is not working as well. So I believe my microphone/webcam is not installed properly. How do I check if its installed at all? How do I test it?

I recently bought a IOgear USB bluetooth adapter and a Sony DRBT101/BLK bluetooth headphones to use with my computer.Whenever I try to make a call using these headphones with skype, I can speak for say 10 seconds and then the headset disconnects completely from the system. I then have to reconnect the headset by switching it off and on. I do not have this problem listening to music using A2DP. It works fine with my mobile phone. When I change the profile to Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP), it shows up as hands free, I thought it should be headset in blueman manager. My friend uses Plantronics headset with is Dell laptop with built in bluetooth and he says his comes up as headset not hands free. Could this be causing the problem?

I have been loving Ubuntu 9.10 and all was working fine until I tried to Skype. My Mic stopped working. I have tried all avenues. Sound prefs, input/output connections all I hear is static hiss.
How can I resolve the problem? I've even tried different mic's.

Just bought a laptop Packard Bell Easynote TJ61 with an internal sound card Conexant CX20561 (Hermosa) and successfully installed Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit. Only problem was that the microphone (internal and external) was not working in all applications (soundrecorder, audacity, skype etc). Output audio (eg- Rythmbox) worked fine with ALSA and PulseAudio.
Tried a LOT of stuff, but the decisive move was to add: options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=laptop to the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and reboot.

I've got a headset with a microphone plugged in, but not recognized by KDE's mixer.
Code:
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 046d:0a0c Logitech, Inc. Clear Chat Comfort USB Headset The device is visible in system settings: System Settings->Multimedia->Phonon->Audio Capture
but not in the mixer under Capture Devices. Is there an easy way to get either the notebook's built-in mic or the headset mic to start?

I can get my Plantronics USB headset to work with Skype. So far so good.
However if I plug the headset in to use with skype, I have to go to sound preferences to get the usb headset to be the selected audio device. It is automatically detected but is not selected.
Is there a way to have ubuntu netbook remix automatically select the usb headset as soon as it is detected after being plugged in?
Win7 behaves this way and my wife is used to it. Visiting the sound preferences every time the headset is plugged in won't do. Answering a call in Skype requires that the headset be selected straight away. Leaving it plugged in all the time isn't convenient either.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10, recently updated.
Don't want to have to resort to installing Win7 again.

My Logitech USB headset has been with me for *years* (since Fedora 10 and before, when I used to use Windows XP!) and it was always fine, but since I updated to Fedora 14 I can hear my own voice, really loudly, whenever I plug it in. I never had this problem before, I've ignored it for a while, but now it's starting to p*** me off. I can't listen to music without hearing myself breathing in the background! Really annoying...
how to fix this? I suspect it's a PulseAudio problem, but haven't been able to click my way around it...

I have an external (USB) sound-card attached to my laptop, through which I generally want all of my sound routed. By and large, the device works wonderfully - with one minor (but annoying) quirk: almost every time the computer reawakens from suspend mode with the device plugged in, something in the OS automatically mutes all sound coming from that device. Note that Ubuntu does NOT restore control to my on-board sound chip - so whenever this happens, I'm left with a machine that's basically universally muted, for no good reason. Of course, I can just go into the volume control panel and unmute the external card - but I'm getting a bit tired of having to do this each time I turn on the machine.
Anybody have any ideas as to how I can force Ubuntu to NOT mute the external card?

I go to System>Preferences>Sound>Input. The setting, that I had previously placed at 50 %, is now at 10 %. I try to drag it with the mouse but it refuses to move. I have to hang up the communication and then take it back to 50 %. After I call again, we can talk OK. What can I do to correct this trouble? I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx - released in April 2010.

Everything works outside of Skype. Speakers work in Skype, but the microphone stays dead. I've dumped Pulseaudio, made sure volume is up in Alsa, rebooted, but Skype still lists Pulseaudio as what it's using! How do I get its tiny mind to use something else? There was also a thread saying an earlier version of Skype, 2.1.0.47, used to work, but I can't find a 64-bit version of that. I've got the 32-bit version which I could run in a 32-bit ubuntu in virtualbox, but fergawdssake there has to be a better way!How do I make sure the system isn't still somehow using Pulseaudio? I did purge it. It should be gone. Output of various system specs:
Code:

Linux bunty 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11 08:03:28 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have an X-Station 25 synth, which has worked fine in the past on Ubuntu. Recently made a fresh install on Xubuntu, and for whatever reason, I'm getting no sound coming out when I just select USB audio. If I go into Sound Preferences, I can see the device. I can even select it for sound input. Hell, if I press some keys on the keyboard, I can see some of the squares on the input level go green.Evidently, there IS sound coming in via the USB connection, and Audacity is capable of recording it.
However, the only way of hearing it is by putting headphones directly into the unit and listening to the monitor output signal. The audio coming in, as detected, is not being played from my laptop speakers/headphones.Am I just missing something here, and that's MEANT to be the only way to hear the audio out?In alsamixer, there are no controls for the Xstation, and nothing seems to be muted. I've upgraded the firmware to the most recent version as well.
