I'm having a bit of a furball trying to change a soundcard. I took out an Audigy card. KDE detected the removal of the old card and asked me if I wanted to remove the drivers. I said yes. I went into the bios and enabled the onboard sound. Now I've got no sound so I guess I've got some configuration to do. So far:

I was, untill very recently, using ubuntu 10.10, and have just upgraded. In Ubuntu 10.10, I was easily able to record sound from my sound card in audacity. For whatever reason, since upgrading I have been unable to do so. I have no problem recording sound from my laptop's microphone, but can't seem to find an option to record from the sound card. I believe it's the same version of Audacity, so all I can assume is that it's an Ubuntu issue.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an MSI S420 with a realtek alc883 onboard. I upgraded from ubutu 8.04 to 10.4 recently, The sound worked in 8.04 although the mic did't work and the same thing in 8.10 (i went through all upgrades) it stopped working at all in 9.04 onwards.
If i did Lspci -v it did say the name of my card, ( I unmuted all in alsamixer and got the codecs but even a test soud won't work) I also dowloaded a driver from Realtek itself, that didn't work.
Then I edited alsabace.conf some more. I tried every one that could possily be it at [URL] including all that said MSI.
I then tried Lordraidens comprehensive sound guide from step 1 to step 5, I used the module-assistant and istalled a driver that was called "hda-realtek-codec" or so. It was the only appropriate one on the list.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have had on and off problems with my sound for quite some time now. Each time it would stop working, I would find a fix which would work for a month or so, then I would go back to having no sound. I have had consistent sound on my Windows partition, so I don't think something is wrong with the hardware. The first fix I used was using "sudo alsa force-reload" to get ALSA working again. The latest fix I used was to add the line "options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba" to alsa-base.conf, which worked up until now. My built-in computer speakers won't make any sound, nor will my external monitors when they are plugged into the headphone jack. I do get sound when I plug in a pair of USB headphones.
I have tried using the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solution Guide [url], but I run into a predicament...

Alsamixer isn't much help either. It shows the name of my card in the top left, but there are no sliders to adjust.
I've tried compiling the modules from source, reinstalling through Synaptic, and plenty of other things, to no avail. Ubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba Satellite U305-S5107
Alright, just installed maverick, got the sound to work great on the 7.1 with pulseaudio. works great in movies, and everything else just wonderfully. the only thing i am stumped by is how to get the sound to loop from my digital input on my soundcard to my analog speakers also on the same soundcard. i know the sound feed works on the input as the makeshift VU meter/bar on my digital input in the sound preferences moves, but i can't get the sound to actually come through on my speakers.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an X-Station 25 synth, which has worked fine in the past on Ubuntu. Recently made a fresh install on Xubuntu, and for whatever reason, I'm getting no sound coming out when I just select USB audio.If I go into Sound Preferences, I can see the device. I can even select it for sound input. Hell, if I press some keys on the keyboard, I can see some of the squares on the input level go green.Evidently, there IS sound coming in via the USB connection, and Audacity is capable of recording it.
However, the only way of hearing it is by putting headphones directly into the unit and listening to the monitor output signal. The audio coming in, as detected, is not being played from my laptop speakers/headphones.Am I just missing something here, and that's MEANT to be the only way to hear the audio out?In alsamixer, there are no controls for the Xstation, and nothing seems to be muted. I've upgraded the firmware to the most recent version as well.
Under 10.04, I was using my sound card just fine, but after a system update,I lost all my sound profiles and my sound. I'm using my mobo's SPDIF ( I have an ASUS p7p55d).

Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.
Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).

I wanted to get a taste of the difference between Gnome and KDE Ubuntu so I downloaded and installed KDE. During the installation I got a pop up box telling me that KDE has determined I had some sound drivers that were not necessary and should I let the program uninstall these files. Like a total jacka$$ I said yes. After the installation was complete I had no sound. I switched back to Gnome, uninstalled KDE, and haven't had sound since. Sound is fine in my Windows 7 dual boot. I ran some commands in the terminal and found that the system isn't recognizing any soundcard.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI use the on-board sound chip of a Gigabyte motherboard (Realtek)and I have connected it with optical cable to an amplifier.
Everything worked fine, until February, when an update changed the kernel and the PC stopped giving sound signal! When I returned to the previous kernel (at grub), again everything worked. So,it doesn't seem to be a connection or drivers problem.
I supposed that with 11.04 edition this problem would be solved. But it isn't. In fact I have serious problem now because the old kernel isn't listed in grub anymore.
I have had such good sucess with Ubuntu that this took me by surprise. Last week after an update I was suddenly without sound in Karmic Koala. Fortunately. I also have Lucid Lynx and the sound is OK there. I really gave it a dedicated try but was unable to get any sound.

Recently, I suddenly lost all sound coming in from firefox. Other sound works fine (e.g. Amarok), but I can't get any sound from type of source on the internet. There's also no sound coming from Opera.
Am running 10.04 from upgrade.
The startup sound just desappeared. The Gnome Login Sound is still on the list of starting programs and the command is right (/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play id=desktop-login description=GNOME Login). What makes it more weird is, that it works fine on all other users. I started to suffer from this problem since I tried to change the sound (I have done it before with no problems). At the same time with changing the startup sound I installed PulseAudio volume control. Could these things have something doing with my startup sound desappearence?

My sound was working, but I got a new SPDIF cable, so I switched it to digital. It worked fine. But then I restarted and now it's gone.

I was trying to get help with video tearing but now I've lost all sound. This happened after using these two commands:
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old

I seem to have lost Rhythmbox on my system. Ubuntu software centre tells me that it is installed, but it is not listed under "sound and video" under "Applications. Is there a way to get it back?

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe old Nvidia GT220 recently died in my HTPC and I replaced it with a new GT430. Sound over HDMI worked beautifully with the old card (after much trial & error,) but has now stopped working with the new card.Forgot to mention that everything appears to be unmuted in alsamixer. When I run "aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/ sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav" I get no sound. I do however get sound from the headphone jack when I do the same command for the onboard sound card (0,0)

sound works great everywhere else, including mp3's on web through firefox. i searched the forum, of course, but didn't find anything that seemed relevant or up-to-date.
Recently I installed a new soundcard to my computer, and I don't have any sound anymore in Linux. Now I have in YaST two sound chips, one AC97 and my soundcard Asus Xonar Essence STX. Obviously Linux detected my soundcard since the custom driver called "Virtuoso" is there. However, my soundchip has still the slot 0, and my soundcard is not configured yet. And here I'm stuck, because:
1. when I tried to delete the AC97 entry, YaST hangs (actually y2base or something like that, the sound subprogram). Alternatively, I tried to just disable the driver, but this wasn't possible (unlike with Windows, where you just click a checkbox).
2. when I tried to configure my new soundcard, the configuration program got stuck again - with every of the three alternatives (fast setup, normal setup and custom setup or so).
I also tried whether the old soundchip is still working, plugging in my headphone into the output of the AC97 soundchip, but I didn't hear anything, so system sound really seems to be broken.
I've just bought myself a E-MU 1820M audio interface for use in home recording after seeing online that a number of people have managed to get it working. The card replaces a Terratec DMX 6Fire (which i only managed to get outs from, no in's). I have done everything and anything suggested all on the forums and websites i can find and still no in's or out's at all, and no lights on the dock functioning.
Having tried and failed on a number of things i decided to see if Alsamixer had picked it up, only to be shown a blank grey window with nothing showing. I purged ALSA and started again (I have even done a fresh install of natty in case it was anything else getting in the way that i had done previously) but to no avail. I am using ALSA driver 1.0.24, which is the latest version, and according to the ALSA website, the EMU support was addded in post-1.0.15, so all should be well.
I'm running Fedora 15 XFCE spin, Audacity 1.3.13-beta and my sound is ALSA/Pulseaudio (I'm not totally sure what these are anyway, are they drivers?) Anyway, when I'm in Audacity and I go to the record options I can choose from default, pulse, and HDA ATI SB:ALC268 Analog (hw:0,0). If I try any of these three options and press record I get static. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like to press record for each of the three options in order.

The last option won't even record nothing, it just doesn't work. Also, if you look where the little picture of the microphone is, the option to drag the input volume is greyed out.
I am running Fedora 14 with the Gnome. The screen size defaulted to 1680 x 1240 mething like that.This was rather small for me so I went to the task bar and clicked on system.ound the app to change the resolution. I chose 1280 x 720. Now, I no longer have the task bar and the text is nearly unreadable.Without the task bar, I cannot find a way to go back to the original size. I also have not had any success finding any way to make the text look better. I tried changing the font and size but that did not have any beneficial affect. Can anyone tell me what will correct the situation?I found another post that mentioned Alt F2 and gnome-display-properties. That let me get back to nearly what I originally had; everything looks good at 1680 x 1050 but the fonts are not quite the same. However, I still have the need to reduce the resolution of the display and maintain readable text and the task bar.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter I listened to the audio program on the Google Chrome, I downloaded the MP3 to listen again offline. When I clicked on the downloaded MP3 file and using Totem to hear on my computer, there is no sound. I checked the sound preference, there is NO MUTE.
I restarted computer, clicked on the MP3 file with Totem, I can hear. I can hear the sound on ...... Which process should I restart without reboot computer. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. Here is the output after execute command "sudo lshw -c sound"

An application I am trying to get going on 9.10 takes over my soundcard whenever I run it. I hear a small pop from the speakers and then no application can play sound after that.

My soundcard is: Onboard sound (Asus M4N68T-M motherboard)
I have posted on the application's forum but it seems most of the posters are developers and the advice goes a bit over my head.

I just installed the Yamaha WF192XG soundcard into my computer, connected the MIDI keyboard (Evolution MK-7) and I got the "...is running in low-graphics mode". Rebooted, still got the message.. Entered the nvidia-x-config thing (or whatever the command is) and rebooted. Still got the same message
