I have some videos on my harddrive. In most of them the sound just stutters for a short while and then they work fine. But others the stuttering seems to go on. I must admit I didn't have the guts to check the whole videos...Its kind of torture to watch a full length music video with stuttering sound... Man...I'm asking so many questions here I'm starting to get ashamed of myself
View 6 RepliesYesterday I fresh installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit LTS on my Toshiba Laptop. This is my second time with Ubuntu so bear with me. I got everything working even the webcam but it won't play dvd movies. When I go to the DVD player icon and try to open it...its won't because it doesn't recognize the dvd format.I have searched but only end up trying stuff that didn't work for it. I guess what it needs is Codec's.

Also I installed VLC and kaffiene with all available codecs but unfortunately I have no sound in my avi movies. I can not know what is the reason although it was working fine in windows.

I've been having a problem with intermittent stuttering in video and audio playback since upgrading to Maverick (it also happened when I briefly installed Lucid). It started out as the odd skip every 20 minutes or so but now it can happen 5 or 6 times in 10 minutes when watching a film. I've tried:
reformatting and clean installing using a half-dozen players installing every codec I could think of (only after the normal ones wouldn't help) diangosing my 3 hard drives (the problem occurs on them all and they're not in a RAID setup) changing then changing back my video drivers disabling pulseaudio and ubuntuone-sync (these were not installed in my previous, working setup) looking at every relevant log file (mplayer, smplayer, demsg...) I know of running ubuntu's testing utilities I'm out of ideas. Going back to Jaunty is the only solution I'm pretty sure will work but it's not exactly ideal. It will be a few months a least before I'm able to install a completely new distro.
I've just made the move to openSUSE* and after the installer seemed to bork my xorg.conf because of my Wacom tablet things have been going quite smoothly. My only problem at the moment is that MP3 playback through Exaile, Banshee or Totem stutters and pauses several times per track or more. The only commonality I can see is GStreamer, but nothing is giving me errors to the console.

* I ditched Fedora to get better Monodevelop support after using Redhat 7.3 and 9 followed by FC 3 and 6 then Fedora 7, 8, 9 and 10. The Ubuntu forums seemed to keep giving me occasional answers to questions, but the Suse build service gave me the RPMs, when the requirements matched.
When I talk to anybody on Skype, the sound is really slow, it sounds like I am a robot. Its running at maybe 1/2 normal speed. I am using Xine backend and internal microphone.

Is there any way to make Ubuntu play sound like Windows 7? I mean when i, for example, listen to music in Windows 7 the sound is much clearer and besides that i can use room correction to obtain a better surround feeling, but when i listen to music in Ubuntu the sound is not very clear and it sounds like stereo even though the sound is played back through all the speakers (the bass is also a little bit to high).
So far i've tried installing the alsa driver and modifying the output levels of each channel, but didn't quite have the same result as the room correction feature in Windows, and the sound wasn't any clearer either. Note: I have an onboard Realtek soundcard and Logitech x530 speakers

no sound on playing .flv files, the volume control greyout. however vlc can play them without sound problem. videos also works without problem on sound.
When I try to play a divx movie online using firefox (my system is ubuntu 8.04) the movie plays but there is no sound.

But there's only one key problem -- sound playback.
When I'm playing an mp3 file in rhythmbox, or any other player, it'll skip when I maximize or minimize windows, or do anything that really uses resources.
And on top of that, if I just let it keep going, it'll eventually just stop playing the song, and the progress bar will jump forward and do the same for other songs, not even playing them.

I've deduced that it's probably a sound driver thing. I've downloaded the driver for my card, but I the directions tell me to install it in
/usr/src/linux/driver/sound
I installed ear candy but now my totem movie player gives no sound output, i've tried to select default card, reinstalled movie player and tried with alsamixer also but nothing seems to work.

how poor is sound playback in Ubuntu? I don't know if this is a general problem in all distros, but as a beginner i decided to install Ubuntu as its popular for users with minimalistic or not much knowledge about Linux at all. today i decided to reformat my ipod classic 160GB after 3 years of usage. I followed the usual steps, incl. entering the rioght firewire id to the config file. When I now upload tracks with gtkpod everything seems fine, but when I then play the songs on my ipod all the songs do stutter like a broken LP. When I connect the ipoad again adn open it with GTKpod i get a message about a playcounter file missing.
is this problem known? I use Ubunut 10.04 on my machine.
I'm having some issues with my ubuntu 10.04 - it freezes constantly. If I'm playing a movie in any program (integrated player, vlc player, ...) or just browsing with chrome ... it just freezes.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem when using Flash. Whenever I am listening to a Flash application (..... primarily), I am unable to hear sound from any other applications (Rhythmbox, movie player, etc).
The converse is also true, if I am using Rhythmbox, and then start ....., the video plays...but with no sound. I have to manually kill the app and web browser (tried multiple...Firefox, Chrome, Swiftfox) to get sounds working correctly. I am my wits end with this problem, and have just putting up with it for several months now.

I have most of my movies in .avi/Divx. when I was using Ubuntu the default movie player would play my vids but when I went full screen the movie would just disappear and would have to shut it down and restart it. View 13 Replies View Relatedi'm using ubuntu since 8.04, and the current (9.10) is a fresh install on new hdd.the problem was the same each version (8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.10) - while i'm playing the video (no matter if i use mplayer [smplayer], gstreamer [totem] or adobe flash plugin [videos]) the playback freezes randomly for about 5-10 sec. during the freeze the movie is still played, i can hear the sound is ok. if i press [space] in smplayer it pauses the playback, so the responses for keyboard actions are ok. not for the mouse clicks however. i can still move the cursor around the screen but it seems the system is not aware of it (clicking on the "pause" button doesnt pause the movie). except the cursor, nothing changes on the screen (if the im [pidgin] window was blinking because of new message, it freezes etc etc).
is there any kind of log i could look into just to try figuring out the problem?it is impossible to watch any movie on my pc (currently i don't have tv)i installed windows on external hdd once and it played videos fine so i suppose it's not hardware problem .
I am new to this forum and have recently switched to Ubuntu. The OS installed without a hitch and was able to get video card, wireless internet installed with relative ease. However, I have encountered a problem installing my E-mu 0404 PCI sound card via the ALSA packages in Synaptic.
Code: 04:03.0 Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Creative Labs SB0400 Audigy2 Value [1102:0008] As you can see once the packages were installed the OS could see the hardware ok, but when I tried playing a standard MP3 file (16 bit, 44.1khz, 192kbps) in Totem it started playing the file back around 15-20% faster than normal? To me it sounds as if the software is playing the audio back at higher sample rate than 44.1khz hence the faster speed, though I'm not 100% on that.
The next thing I tried was playing the same file back in VLC and it was exactly the same (15-20% too fast), but this time it was horrible and glitchy as well, almost as if the audio buffer size was set to small. The same thing happened when I tried playing back some flac and wav files (all 16 bit, 44.1khz) also. I have searched google (and read the comprehensive sound card guide on this forum) and read several forums, guides, etc. for anybody posting the same issue with this particular card but could find nothing. From all reports I've read this card should work fine under ALSA. For the record I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit kernel running on a Dell Dimension 9200 (Intel Core2Duo E6400 2.13ghz) with 2GB RAM.
Since I upgraded to Lucid Lynx, playing videos with the default player do not work properly. I only see the content while moving the window, or in full screen mode, and in both ways, the picture is distorsioned and with strange colors. Playing it with VLC does work properly ONLY IF I change the video output module to something different as default (X11 works, openGL also) but Linux Framebuffer does not.
The question: Is there a way to change the "default" video mode that Totem (or Kaffeine) use?? I have not found anything on the net with this exact problem.
i have reinstalled my mint 7 and whenever i play downloaded/saved videos from ....., i get a choppy/scratchy audio & video in playback. this was not the case before i reinstalled. videos videos played directly and other dvds played from cdrom and mp3s played from hd are however working fine.

When I insert a DVD movie, it won;t show up to play. I can't see it when I click on the My Computer icon, and it doesn't show up in the device notifier. I have tried a couple of different DVD's and a couple of different OpenSuse 11.4 computers. This would leave me to believe that it is a setting issue that I am missing. I have never had this issue before with other OpenSuse versions. All I had to do was install all the codecs required and voila!
