Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rhythmbox Metadata / ID3 Tags - Rights?
Nov 5, 2010
I am on Ubuntu 10.04 using Rhythmbox (0.12. as my favorite music player. Right now I'm cleaning up my music collection. Part of this job is to ID3-tag multiple files (artist, genre, etc.).
On some files this works great, ob others it doesn't and I get a gstreamer error or I cannot even change the current ID3-tags. Regarding the last problem, I assume that the problem might occur because of missing rights to edit ID3-tags.
So my question is: What permissions should I give to my music collection, so Rhythmbox is able to edit the files?

I am trying to organize some music I just copied off cd to my hard drive. the tracks are not listed (there is no track listing or album title etc) so I go to music-properties and try to fill the stuff in. I can't type into the boxes.

I just used EasyTAG 2.1.5 under Ubuntu 9.10 to update the tags on my music files running on Rhythmbox 0.12.5, and now Rhythmbox shows that the runtimes (Time) of dozens of my mp3's are now 27:03:11. That means Rhythmbox thinks all those songs are 27 hours, 3 minutes, and 11 seconds long, which they are not. Some are now shown as 54:06:23. So far they are all playing correctly, but the slider at the top of the Rhythmbox window barely moves, making it difficult, if not impossible, to jump to different points in the songs. Nothing else seems to have been affected.

I used Easy Tag to edit my songs' ID3 tags. Banshee reads them fine but Rhythmbox misreads them! For eg., blink 182, Blink 182, and Blink-182!!! Apparently it's because Easy Tag makes ID3v1 tags while Rhythmbox read ID3v4? That's SO stupid! What am I supposed to do now? I saw RB had a bug filed but it got closed because "it's not a problem with rhythmbox, it's a problem with ID3 tags." RB should be able to read them! That's ridiculous. So how do I fix the tags? As for Banshee, anyone else move from version 1.6 to 1.7.6? The new one crashes everytime I use it. It's simply awful. And this is supposed to lots of bugs fixed? It's the new stable version? What a joke! How do I fix this now? Or better yet, how to go back to version 1.6? ^ Never mind, I downgraded it. Still have the rhythmbox problem! I'm using Ubuntu Lucid 64 bit with Gnome. Rhythmbox seems unable to handle a directory rename. My problem is the following:
1. Create a playlist in Rhythmbox with some songs in it.
2. Close Rhythmbox.
3. Rename the directory with the songs in it.
4. Open Rhythmbox.
5. The songs are gone from Rhythmbox' index and can be found under "Missing Files". New versions of the songs show up, but this is not very helpful, as the playlist is empty.
I searched the web and found a known bug which occurs if step 2 is left out (that is, a directory rename with Rhythmbox open). However, in my case, even changing a directory name without Rhythmbox running breaks its file index.

Whenever I plug my Zune in, Rhythmbox recognizes all the songs on it but when I doubleclick on a song to play it, the song doesn't play and Rhythmbox quits. Any suggestions on how to fix it? I'm running a Dell XPS 410 with 4GB RAM and a 1.75 GHz processor. Also, I imported a CD and it plays fine.

For example, an mp3 file has all the tags filled - track number, year, genre, etc. But when in Amarok, some tags are not shown to me.Look at the attached screenshot, please. You see, when I look into track properties I can see that it HAS got a track number and a year. But it is not shown in playlist.

How can I set specific ID3 tags for multiple files? For example, I would like to set all files in a directory to the same album. (directly setting the album tag for files in a directory to the directory name would be even better)

I rip CDs using abcde and cdparanoia. The output MP3s have correct accents when I list them in a terminal.I then tag the songs using id3v2 from the command line wrapped in a script which outputs the tags to the screen as it writes. Again, the characters are there. However, when I read these tracks in any music player the accented characters are always corrupt. At what stage is this happening and how can I prevent it?

I use RipperX to rip CD's on my Ubuntu home server. The files it rips and encodes are in mp3 and they are all fine.
However the system is not saving id3 information for the final two tracks, despite having all the information.
You can see what I'm describing in these images: [URL]
If you want more information just say, I'll get back to you.

I've been searching all over google for a way to extract album artwork embedded in id3 tags.
In an ideal world I could do this recursively in my music folder and have it save the artwork as say "cover.jpg" within the album's folder.
Anyone know of a script or program that can do this in either Linux or OSX?

I have a bunch of OGG files with TAGs I changed. Now I want to have the same changes done to the filename.I know I can do this easily with ie. EasyTAG but that makes all my songs get reindexed in Rhythmbox. This wouldn't be a problem hadn't I rated much of them already.s there a way to change the filename from within Rhythmbox, or with an external method, where the ratings are left intact. I need it to be done automatically, manually changing Rhythmbox' database file takes too much time with +2500 songs.

I share my music between ubuntu and windows 7 (nothing fancy just copy, paste, external hard drive). and have learnt that my music collection doesn't show up right in windows media player because WMP can't read version 2.4 right. most of my collection is saved in 2.4. I used mp3tag on windows for converting my whole collection but wiped the computer recently and had to start over. This time i would like to just convert my whole collection on my ubuntu pc through the terminal. I tried using EyeD3 but it didn't seem to work for me. But perhaps i typed the command wrong. Could someone show me either a proper command for converting my mp3 collection to v2.3 OR recommend another ubuntu program/commandline that can handle 7,500 songs and convert them to ID3v2 v2.3.

If I convert an audio file to a different format (such as mp3) using a pipe I lose the tags.
Code:
ffmpeg -i <filename> -f wav - | lame - output.mp3
If I knew the tags of the input file I could put them back using a program such as id3v2

I have about twenty five hundred films, shorts, serials in (mostly) avi and mp4 containers. I would like to both add and subtract metadata like title and creator in bulk. Most all of my machines are Ubuntu/Debian now, but I could even work with what I have left of Windows, which are virtual machines.

I have most of my music on my hard drive in one big "Music" folder, and in Amarok this is seen as the collection. Everything is imported, works fine.
Until i change the ID3 tags of a file/album. Amarok refuses to load the new tags, and keeps displaying the old tags.
I have over 200 GB of music in that folder, some of it is badly tagged. When i realize that, i retag the files with Musicbrainz. And unless i scan the entire collection again, the new tags wont be loaded. Needless to say i can't listen to the respective album/file for hours, as the rescanning of that whole folder takes at least one hour.

I recently downloaded several MP3 albums from Amazon. Most of these albums contain works from several different composers. The problem is, the Rhythmbox music player in Ubuntu Maverick won't display composer tags. I am therefore searching for a way to overwrite the artist tag of each file with the composer info. This overwriting would need to be a batch process.
Let's say that I have an album of the New York Philharmonic performing works of a dozen different composers.I would like for the correct composer to overwrite New York Philharmonic in each file. Is it possible to use a program such as EasyTag do what I need? Please provide detailed instructions and/or a link to such details.

Not sure if this is the right forum for this -- photo software. I have been using DigiKam for a while now, and now that my photo collection has 10,000 some photos, I figure I ought to start tagging them before it gets really out of hand. I am not particularly fond of the DigiKam tagging interface, so I tried to use Geeqie to tag my photos and write the tags to the XMP keywords field, thinking that Digikam would read the metadata and tag my photos accordingly. I have confirmed that Geeqie is indeed writing the tags to the metadata of the photos, but there seems to be no way to get digikam to reload the metadata for files already in its library. Is there any way to make digikam see these tags written by another application, short of re-importing all my photos?

I own a Sony NWZ-E345 MP3 player that used to be seen by Rhythmbox when running 9.10 with no issues. After enabling the plugin for MTP within Rhythmbox the player was seen at connection. However, after updating to 10.04 my MP3 player is not seen at all, even though MTP support is enabled under plugins. As a matter of fact none of the media players I installed can see my player and they all support MTP. I tried some other players as a troubleshooting step. I have confirmed that libmtp8 is installed via the repository. Has anyone encountered this as well? I suspect this may be an easy reply for someone. BTW, this occurs with two different machines and nothing has changed with my MP3 player.

If i close rhythmbox using the close tab on the window it closes to a daemon on the application bar. This is both fine and handy but i have a problem in that even when i left-click the daemon and hit 'quit', Rythmbox closes and then appears again a few seconds later. The same happens if i 'killall Rrhythmbox' in the terminal.I can also see, in conky, that Rhythmbox is running as a process when it re-opens and i can effectively 'show Rythmbox from the daemon - so its not just a daemon problem. Can someone either tell me how to permanently quit a running instance of Rhythmbox or tell me what setting i have enabled that keeps Rhtymbox opening?

I have just installed Rhythmbox via Synaptic..All is fine, however, I noticed that it's showing release version 0.12.8. After checking out [url] I noticed there is a newer stable version available. I have downloaded the tar.gz file, and followed the instructions in the INSTALL file.
The first step is to, in terminal, run ./configure before attempting to MAKE/MAKE INSTALL (won't let me do it anyways)..I run .configure, and at the end, I get this error:
Code:
This is preventing me from moving on during the installation.
I have tried
Code:
And it cannot be found.I have search Synaptic for GTK+-2.0 (for starters) and nothing specific shows up..A LOT shows up, but I'm not sure if there is one specific item I should be downloading?
