Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rhythmbox ID3 Tags And Banshee Sudden Instability / Sort It?
Sep 29, 2010I used Easy Tag to edit my songs' ID3 tags. Banshee reads them fine but Rhythmbox misreads them! For eg., blink 182, Blink 182, and Blink-182!!! Apparently it's because Easy Tag makes ID3v1 tags while Rhythmbox read ID3v4? That's SO stupid! What am I supposed to do now? I saw RB had a bug filed but it got closed because "it's not a problem with rhythmbox, it's a problem with ID3 tags." RB should be able to read them! That's ridiculous. So how do I fix the tags?
As for Banshee, anyone else move from version 1.6 to 1.7.6? The new one crashes everytime I use it. It's simply awful. And this is supposed to lots of bugs fixed? It's the new stable version? What a joke! How do I fix this now? Or better yet, how to go back to version 1.6? I downgraded it?Still have the rhythmbox problem!I'm using Ubuntu Lucid 64 bit with Gnome.

Nov 5, 2010I am on Ubuntu 10.04 using Rhythmbox (0.12. as my favorite music player. Right now I'm cleaning up my music collection. Part of this job is to ID3-tag multiple files (artist, genre, etc.).
On some files this works great, ob others it doesn't and I get a gstreamer error or I cannot even change the current ID3-tags. Regarding the last problem, I assume that the problem might occur because of missing rights to edit ID3-tags.
So my question is: What permissions should I give to my music collection, so Rhythmbox is able to edit the files?

Jan 31, 2010I just used EasyTAG 2.1.5 under Ubuntu 9.10 to update the tags on my music files running on Rhythmbox 0.12.5, and now Rhythmbox shows that the runtimes (Time) of dozens of my mp3's are now 27:03:11. That means Rhythmbox thinks all those songs are 27 hours, 3 minutes, and 11 seconds long, which they are not. Some are now shown as 54:06:23. So far they are all playing correctly, but the slider at the top of the Rhythmbox window barely moves, making it difficult, if not impossible, to jump to different points in the songs. Nothing else seems to have been affected.

I have a bunch of MP3s (some ogg) with crazy names in crazy directories. I would like to make sure the tags are correct (possibly by hand) and then rename them/move them so that they are in places like
<artist>/<directory>/<songname>.mp3.
So I imagine a magic program where I can edit tags and then push a magic button that makes directories and copies the files as above. Any ideas?

Feb 28, 2010I love how Rhythmbox connects quickly and easily to my iPod, and how Rhythmbox does a pretty solid job of keeping track of changes to my library, though it is large. But I cannot seem to create playlists on the iPod through Rhythmbox. When I create them, I can see them in Rhythmbox, but when I unplug the iPod and try to play them, they don't show up. I plug the iPod back in, and Rhythmbox acts like they're there - I can even play the Playlist from the iPod in Rhythmbox.
Is there something I need to do to "write" the Playlist to the iPod from Rhythmbox? It is so irritating to have to create an "on the go" playlist on the iPod and then fire up Rhythmbox and rename it what i want it to be.

Jan 6, 2011Rhythmbox can see my Sansa Clip+ but not music on it. When you have a look at the Sync options the Music, Podcast etc are all empty but it also shows Other !.2 gb which must be my mp3 files.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rhythmbox Won't Play First Track Of Several .mp3 Albums / Sort It?
Aug 26, 2010I've been experiencing an odd issue since I upgraded my main desktop to Lucid - namely, that the first track on several albums doesn't appear in the Rhythmbox library. The rest of the album will show up and play just fine. I installed Exaile to see if it was just a Rhythmbox bug, and the tracks appear in the library, but will not play (it just skips through the whole track, as it would if the MP3 codec isn't installed or configured correctly). Did a clean install of Lucid yesterday, which was also of no help.
The files are all .mp3, non-VBR encoding (320kbps, IIRC...not that it should really matter). They are stored in an NTFS partition I use to share data between Windows XP and my Linux installs.
Funny thing is, the tracks show up and play just fine in XP and on OpenSuse 11.3 (KDE version). It also works fine on my laptop, which is also dual-booting XP and Lucid, with the tunes stored on the Windows partition.

Feb 3, 2011I just migrated to Ubuntu 10.04 from windows and I could not be more satisfied, except for one minor, nitpicky detail. In iTunes I was able to sort my music by "album by year". That is, my music was sorted primarily by artist, then by album year. So each artist had their albums listed in chronological order. My library is meticulously tagged, so every track on every album is tagged with the same YEAR value. Is this possible in Rhythmbox? Is there a plugin or will i have to edit a .conf file (or similar) somewhere? I'm new to Ubuntu, but not afraid of getting my hands a bit dirty, so to speak.

Aug 8, 2010we were watching Clint Eastwood in Pink Cadillac on DVD. Earlier, I had been checking out the streaming internet radio on my roommates Mint laptop using Rhythmbox, and found it to be pretty cool. Usually, if I stream any music, it's just from the CBC (like the U.S.'s NPR), so I just stream it directly from them, but all the stations on rhythmbox (there's a whack of them) got me interested. At the start of Pink Cadillac, I proposed myself a challenge: Could I manage to get rhythmbox (a GNOME application) to work on my Slack64 -current box, before the movie ended? There's probably (maybe?) a similar app that installs and works more natively on Slack, but that's not the point; I wanted to try installing rhythmbox in < 2 hrs. Well, I got it installed finally, *just* at the end of the movie credits, but it won't play! And sometimes it segfaults. So, I wonder if anyone has any tips about what I might be missing or whatever.
Here's what I typically get when I first start it up (though it starts & runs OK):

Seems even on systems with some sort of 'natural' support for installing this thing, a lot of people are getting the same or very similar errors, but I haven't found a solution (obviously - I wouldn't be posting otherwise ) but people, myself included, have discovered that there doesn't seem to be a 100% accurate list of *required* dependencies for rhythmbox; it needs stuff that it doesn't tell you it needs.
EDIT: Disclaimer (just to cut the 'dependency-hell' arguments off at the pass, so to speak): This is just a fun experiment for me. I don't suggest Slackware newbies start trying to install <xyz Gnome application> into their Slackware boxes unless you want to spend HOURS fixing stuff like this, and you want to have fun doing it, and have it maybe bork your box up. And if you *do* decide to try it anyways, don't blame Slackware for giving you dependency hell. Gnome doesn't come with Slackware (here's the ChangeLog). I like Slackware exactly the way it is - it comes with more than enough apps to satisfy most people, all nicely working out of the box, so installing stuff like this is not really necessary - but I'm choosing to do this one anyway, and am not deterred by this "mess" of stuff.If this dependency stuff isn't your 'cup of tea', an 'automatically-dependency-resolving' distro might be better for you; I prefer to mess my machine up on my own, rather than let my package manager do it for me.

May 4, 2010We switched from unix to linux and we have an old report that extracted data from a database, output to an ascii file and then sorted the results in the file based on different arguments. The report now blows up when it runs,and I can only guess it is because the options for sort on linux differ slightly from unix.For example, here is one of the commands issued from within the report app that ran on the old unix box:

I will eventually rewrite the report to store the data in a local table, but I can simply adjust the options to suit the requirments of linux. Basically, I need to know if this can be a quick fix for the short term.

Feb 27, 2011I just finished upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 and converting from F-spot to Shotwell, including adding a large number of new photographs (>15 k).
On opening Shotwell today I found that all "tags" and "events", including those from the F-stop imported photos, have disappeared!! (strangely the photo ratings are maintained)
No amount of searching was able to relocate them. The modification date on the photo.db in the .shotwell folder is pre-problem, so I am holding out some hope that the relevant data have not been over-written.
I am not familiar with sql so do not know how to check the db (or restore the correct headers or whatever else is needed).

My music directory is a mess with folder names. Not a big deal since I use Banshee to library everything. I have a fairly large music collection on my main hard drive(140gb) but I keep id3 tags clean.
I'm setting up an ftp server and it will be impossible to navigate the way the folders are now.
Something similar for movies would be cool too.
