Ubuntu Multimedia :: Metadata Stripper / Inserter For Avi / Mp4?
Jun 24, 2010
I have about twenty five hundred films, shorts, serials in (mostly) avi and mp4 containers. I would like to both add and subtract metadata like title and creator in bulk. Most all of my machines are Ubuntu/Debian now, but I could even work with what I have left of Windows, which are virtual machines.

I am on Ubuntu 10.04 using Rhythmbox (0.12. as my favorite music player. Right now I'm cleaning up my music collection. Part of this job is to ID3-tag multiple files (artist, genre, etc.).
On some files this works great, ob others it doesn't and I get a gstreamer error or I cannot even change the current ID3-tags. Regarding the last problem, I assume that the problem might occur because of missing rights to edit ID3-tags.
So my question is: What permissions should I give to my music collection, so Rhythmbox is able to edit the files?

Not sure if this is the right forum for this -- photo software. I have been using DigiKam for a while now, and now that my photo collection has 10,000 some photos, I figure I ought to start tagging them before it gets really out of hand. I am not particularly fond of the DigiKam tagging interface, so I tried to use Geeqie to tag my photos and write the tags to the XMP keywords field, thinking that Digikam would read the metadata and tag my photos accordingly. I have confirmed that Geeqie is indeed writing the tags to the metadata of the photos, but there seems to be no way to get digikam to reload the metadata for files already in its library. Is there any way to make digikam see these tags written by another application, short of re-importing all my photos?

Rhythmbox seems unable to handle a directory rename. My problem is the following:
1. Create a playlist in Rhythmbox with some songs in it.
2. Close Rhythmbox.
3. Rename the directory with the songs in it.
4. Open Rhythmbox.
5. The songs are gone from Rhythmbox' index and can be found under "Missing Files". New versions of the songs show up, but this is not very helpful, as the playlist is empty.
I searched the web and found a known bug which occurs if step 2 is left out (that is, a directory rename with Rhythmbox open). However, in my case, even changing a directory name without Rhythmbox running breaks its file index.

I'd like to strip out all of the metadata, everything. Sometimes the photos have been in and out of different computers or passed around from friends, and I don't want any info left, including the archive bit.

how a way that I can edit the metadata tags on some MP3s using regex?
I've got almost 100 MP3, all named "01 - <song title>," "02 - <song title>," etc., and I, understandably, don't want to edit them all by hand.
Running "s/d{2} - //g" would be so much easier.

When i did my initial install of ubuntu 10.04 server i was using a PCI SIL SATA controller, and i chose the hardware raid 1 setup.. After installation i talked it over with a few colleagues and we decided software raid would better suit our needs. With that being said, I removed the controller and directly connected the disks to the SATA ports on that mobo. At that point, I re-ran the ubuntu server install going through the manual software raid 1 setup.
After completion during restart I receiver two errors:
Error: sil: only 3/4 metadata /dev/sda
Error: sil: only 3/4 metadata /dev/sdb
I assume this is in regards to the hardware configuration with the card, but since the card is no longer installed, and the system was reinstalled i'm having one hell of a time figuring out where this info is stored.
My software raid1 has been running strong for a couple weeks now without issue, so i'd like to resolve this startup error. Its more of annoyance since the system starts.

At windows, if I set any icon to folder, this creates desktop.ini, or .directory. At ubuntu, I noted that this information is only stored in metadata, which you can access typing "gvfs-metadata" I found this idea: http:[url].....but I don't know how to realize that.I'd like to do that. For specific folder for example, store the metadata info in hidden file, which could be read in windows or any OS.

I am looking for a PDF editor for Ubuntu that has the ability to erase all metadata from a document. I want to do this so that even if the PDF file is posted publicly, I would be at no risk.
I know Adobe Acrobat can do this completely and well, but it isn't free. Does anybody know what else might be able to do this job? I need a utility that can erase everything, including deleted/cropped content.

I have a UUID file that has grown to 8.4 gigs... and I don't know what to do. Its sucking up all the free space in the partition. I guess I will have to delete the file but I don't know how to do it properly.I suspect this is a backup of all the data I have been moving around between drives recently.

I had a couple of IDE hard disks that had previously been set up as a RAID1 array.I wanted to re-format and use them as separate independent hard disks but Ubuntu reported that they were part of a RAID array. This is how I removed that RAID metadata from the drives. With both drives connected I booted up Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD.
I checked the device names via System, Administration, Disk Utility - they were listed as /dev/sda and /dev/sdbI also noted that there was an extra device with name of /dev/md-0 which was the RAID array. Then I rebooted the PC, and checked the device names via System, Administration, Disk Utility - no more /dev/md-0 and the two drives no longer showed as part of a RAID array.

I think the title says it all. I want a quick way to crop images whilst retaining exif data (rules out shotwell) so when I upgraded lucid to natty (via MM) I kept f-spot. However when I click the 'edit image' button in eye of gnome f-spot still opens but it has no 'edit' or 'metadata' options in the sidepane so I can't do a quick crop anymore. Why they are missing or how to put them back?

I am trying to get the metadata out from an image file in python. I have tried using PIL but it does not give me the data I am looking for (mostly just got a bunch of hex code) and I have no idea how to use ImageMagick, the python module is poorly documented and I can't find any examples on the net.The info I need is stuff like camera model, if flash was used, focal length, exposure time, date, etc.. pretty much the same info I get when I look at the "Image" tab on properties in Nautilus on Ubuntu.
What I am doing is writing a script that will iterate through a lot of pictures and put all this metadata into MySQL. I chose python since it is simple and I am familiar with it. But I can't find a good way to get that metadata from within python.

I tried editing /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo and /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo, and also amending the host file as explained in this fix. [URL]. Still doesn't work. I am behind a proxy.
