Debian Multimedia :: Squeeze With ATI Radeon 9550 / Can't Get Full Screen?
Feb 16, 2011
I have ATI Radeon 9550
"lspci -v | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AS [Radeon 9550] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])"
using free driver. Everything is working fine but movie playing. In Totem Movie Player I got full screen but playing is like slow motion, and in SMPlayer I can't get full screen. Window is in full screen but movie is not...

I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

I replaced an ATI Radeon 9550 with a Radeon X1300/X1550, in hopes of better performance.
My System: P4@3GHz, 1.5Gb RAM, Fedora 12, kernel 2.6.32.10-90.fc12.
Faults: Screen refresh is extremely low. Glxgears outputs 25 FPS. Dragging windows around is sometimes really slow.
What I did so far, in hope of fixing it:
1. Installed 'system-config-display', for providing an xorg.conf
2. Did: yum --enablerepo=rawhide update mesa-dri-drivers-experimental mesa*, fixing this, but to no avail...
I cannot find any errors in the log...I don't know what to do...
I am posting my Xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log and Glxinfo through links to pastebin.com
POST UPDATE:
When running GlxGears, I get a bit of motion, and then the gears freeze for 1 second. And this goes on and on. But...if I move the mouse around, I get 1100FPS!
Now I messed a bit with xorg.conf and the "SWCursor" Option, but the above happens when this option is on "true". On "false" there is no 1100FPS, only the freezing loop...

From looking at beaucoup posts, it appears I'm SOL trying to use the Linux drivers provided by AMD (See url.terminal command line "sh ./ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run". Since I keep getting an error message saying the file can't be opened either as root or using sudo I guess there's no reason to continue.Anyway, I have my PC displaying on a CRT thru a s-video connection. The screen is overscanned, that is, part of both the left and right sides are not visible. That is why I wanted to load the Radeon drivers & Catalyst Control Center so I could shrink the screen width.Question: Should I keep trying to open the ATI file? SHould I install the Open Source ATI driver? Should I give up and try to find a nVidia AGP 8X card?

This obnoxious bar has just appeared in Smplayer at the top of the screen. It stays there even when I go full screen. Now full screen isn't full screen and there are black edges on both sides of the screen. I have not be able to figure out how to hide it. I do not need or want this onscreen display. How can I configure Smplayer to make this go away? How can I get my 16:9 full screen aspect ratio back? I have done nothing to mplayer or smplayer as far as editing any or changing any configuration files. I tried several videos and it displays on all of them. It was not there last time I used Smplayer.

I installed debian 6.0 and have a problem with mplayer running in fullscreen/maximised window. Basically whenever I want to play a film in full screen or maximised window the view/film area remains a small rectangle and there's a big black area around that makes up the full screen.I'm running a nouveau driver and the video settings in mplayer are set to xv ( I also tried gl).
That's what happen when I run mplayer from the command line (eg. mplayer film.avi), which is my preferred method. When I want to play a film by opening it from a file browser, it starts mplayer but there's no video at all, just the sound.

I updated my system as usually. Sadly since then my screen flickers every 10 (or so) seconds. It turns black for like 10ms and then back to whatever it showed before. This behavior occurs after some uptime. Haven't measured the flicker-free time span yet but I guess it starts after 15 to 30 minutes.I'm using a up-to-date Squeeze with KDE4 an the nvidia-driver for me GeForceGo. Interesting thing is: It does not flicker while using fluxbox using same xserver.

I just set up my dad's pc with Debian Sqeeze. It runs perfectly fine and after trying a lot of distro's Debian is the only one that will not crash or freeze up X. Now we're forced to using my own 17" monitor instead of his 19" wide screen since the max res is 1280 x 1024 in Sqeeze. What he needs is 1360 x 768. I found out in the wiki that xorg.conf needs to be edited. Since the file does not exist it needs to be created by running "Xorg -configure" in tty after stopping GDM. when running the "Xorg -configure" command this is the output;
" vmware: Please ignore above "FATAL: Module vmwgfx bot found."
(++) Using config file: "/root/xorg.conf.new"
(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices.
Configuration failed. "
It's an Intel Sandy Bridge integrated graphics chip. I've tried running "Xorg:1 -configure" as mentioned in a forum but that simply gives me a "unknown command" answer.

After dist-upgrade a few days ago, X refuses to kick in.
Xorg.0.log reads
Code:
Fatal server error:
no screens found
Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at http://wiki.x.org
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information. lshw reads that Xpress 200M is claimed by radeonfb driver.
At this moment, no fglrx packages are installed.
System is Toshiba laptop.
I do not think ATI dropped support, however, even without fglrx, nothing works.

Debian Squeeze on my computer with AMD Athlon XP 2500+ CPU and Radeon X1950 and I'm struggling to make graphics drivers work.I've learned so far that it is hard to install proprietary drivers because Catalyst 9.3 doesn't support Squeeze. When I run./ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run --buildandinstallpkg Debian/testingI get this error: 'Build Option --buildandinstallpkg not supported currently by packager' and I couldn't find any information on this.Without this option it doesn't work either. Then I tried to make open drivers work, so I made sure that xserver-xorg-video-radeon is installed and I checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log.It contains two errors:

(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch.

I've been on numerous websites--with tutorials telling how to install the ATI drivers, I'm running Squeeze 6.0.1 Gnome amd64, the tutorial I am using is located at the ATIProprietary Debian Wiki [URL] when I try the following:
sudo apt-get install fakeroot debhelper build-essential libstdc++5
I get this:

Package fakeroot is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source.

I have a feeling that apt-get is not searching the web, yet searching a CD perhaps? Because when I've tried the apt-get update, I get the following:
Ign cdrom://[Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0 _Squeeze_ - Official Snapshot amd64 LIVE/INSTALL Binary 20110324-08:54] squeeze Release.gpg
Media change: please insert the disc labeled
'Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0 _Squeeze_ - Official Snapshot amd64 LIVE/INSTALL Binary 20110324-08:54'
in the drive '/media/cdrom/' and press enter
After doing that, nothing happens, and my apt-get still doesn't work, everything I try and install like build-essential says it's not found. Also when I
su
nano /ect/apt/sources.lst
the list in nano is empty???
I'm currently running a dual boot with windows xp/debian but as soon as I can get everything working, I'm going to turn this into a full linux system. Also my sound doesn't work, but my sound is HD sound that goes via the video card, I have it hooked up HDMI to my LG tv/monitor, sound works fine on xp. I think once I get the video card drivers installed it should possibly fix my sound issues at the same time.

I have just installed Squeeze on my laptap with a radeon mobility equipped laptop. When it boots, I see the following message:r600_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/RV635_pfp.bin".and some others, too, but it stalls at that point, and I cannot use CTRL-ALT-F2 to get a text-based prompt - in fact, I can only seem to get it back with a ALT-SYSRQ (R-E-I-S-V-B) sequence to force a reboot. It is a multi-boot system, with a windows partition, Ubuntu partition, and the new Debian partition. The Ubuntu and Windows partitions will still boot, only the Debian stalls.
When I boot into Ubuntu, I can see the Debian partition, and can see (for instance) the /var/boot/dmesg file, but it only says:"(Nothing has been logged yet.)"So, being new to debian itself (even though, I know, that Ubuntu has a debian base), how can I make it boot without X, which is I presume, the center of the difficulty? Can I change some file on the debian partition using Ubuntu to get the debian partition to boot in text only mode, and then try to fix the radeon driver?
Alternatively, can I put the proper files for the radeon driver *from* the Ubuntu partition *to* the debian partition and expect it to load and boot correctly? I did, at one point, download and install the proprietary ATI driver files on Ubuntu, so can I put them in a proper place on the debian install?

Alright, Lenny has a working "fglrx-driver" package for my laptop, but Squeeze does not. Would it be possible to install the one from Lenny on Squeeze since Squeeze has newer libraries and such? I know I can't install new stuff with older libraries, but can I install the old stuff with newer libraries? I am at the end of my rope here! I mean ATI sucks and we all know this, but I've always found a Linux/open-source alternative that worked, until Squeeze.

I am using the latest squeeze (2.6.32-6 kernel) on a Thinkpad X100e.Most things works fine (after some tinkering though) but I cannot install the official ATI driver.I have tried:1) Downloaded the latest official drivers from ATI's site.a) If I choose install, it says that everything works but the driver is not actually installed. After reboot I don't have X anymoreb) If I choose build packages for Debian testing, the packages are not built. 2) Downloaded the not so latest official drivers. Same as in case 1)3) Tried to install them with the sgfxi script. The script reports a success but still after a reboot, I have no X.4) Tried to apt-get install fglrx-driver package from sid. Everything installs fine, after reboot I have X but no 3d acceleration.

I am running Squeeze on an older Compaq EVO laptop with radeon graphics.
A few months ago, after an upgrade, suspend and hibernate stopped working. The suspend or hibernate worked fine, but the resume just hung with a black screen. I finally got around to looking into it and found a workaround.
The workaround is to disable Kernel Mode Setting for the radeon. This can be done by adding the boot parameter "radeon.modeset=0" or by editing /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf so that it includes the line "options radeon modeset=0".
If you are interested in the details, you can search for problem reports related to radeon kernel mode setting.

I have a few Debian Squeeze installations which I perform upgrades on average on weekly basis. Last week one of my laptops, gave me this while all others did not, The following packages have unmet dependencies: gnome-desktop-environment: Depends: gnome-core (= 1:2.30+1) but 1:2.30+4 is to be installed. gnome: Depends: gnome-desktop-environment (= 1:2.30+4) but 1:2.30+1 is installed and it is kept back. The following actions will resolve these dependencies: Remove the following packages: 1) gnome Keep the following packages at their current version 2)gnome-accessibility [1:2.30+1 (now) 3) gnome-core [1:2.30+1 (now) Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?] Has anyone encountered this? Is it safe to accept the proposal?

Is this card supported in Squeeze by either the non-free firmware or the proprietary driver? I just got one to stick into an older box that will be going to a college girl that wants the 3D desktop in KDE. The built-in video was a joke and wouldn't even work without compositing. It was one of those crappy, non-standard pieces of crap known as a "Unichrome" (not the pro).

Using Ubuntu 9.10 I installed Ubuntu onto a second hard drive and everything seems to work fine except for the fact that I cannot install the driver (it says not supported or something) when I downloaded it from the website. I downloaded the driver made for Linux. The driver manager claims "no proprietary drivers." At the moment it shows to be using integrated graphics, but I need the full hardware graphics to play games. The open source alternate driver didn't work either.
